Chapter 3 (also known as “Senseless Torment of a Traveling Bible Sandwich or the chapter that didn't feel like writing itself)

Inside Iris' kitchen, she grinned conspiratorially at Kurama.

“Is this another one of your experiments?” he asked, motioning to the living room.

“Not at first. It was his fault.” She replied.

“How,” he asked. “could, that terrified man have started this nonsense?”

She shrugged. “He woke me up by pounding on that door and making those lovely chimes ring. Like I said, he started it.”

Kurama sighed. “Perhaps I had better let that poor man out of here before you attempt to scar him for life any more.” When her eyes twinkled, he spoke again. “Did he give you a business card?”

Iris smiled. “Yes.”

“No” Kurama replied, holding out his hand.

“But it's just senseless torment of a …” she paused to look at the card's writing. “Traveling bible sandwich. Whatever that is.”

“Salesman.” Kurama corrected and pulled the card out of the elf's grasp. “and he's been tormented enough, I believe.” With that, he told her to stay put and he walked back into the living room.

Norton was sitting on the couch, looking straight ahead when he heard the kitchen door open again. “Mr. Crane?” Kurama asked.

Norton jumped up to his feet. “Yes sir!”

Kurama inwardly chuckled. “I'm going to show you the way. Please follow me.”

Norton was behind Kurama in an instant. He followed silently for a few moments, and then timidly spoke. “I'm a big fan of your father's work.”

Kurama stopped and turned around. “I'm sorry?”

“You know,” he replied. “God. The man upstairs. Your dad.”

Kurama processed this and began to laugh. “You think I'm----“

“Jesus.” Norton Confirmed.

“I'm sorry, Mr. Crane, but I'm afraid I'm not—“

“It's okay. I won't tell anyone. Could I have an autograph? You know, for my wife?”

Still baffled by the man's behavior, Kurama took the business card and the pen from Norton's outstretched hand and scribbled something that started with a J in it and handed it back.

Norton grinned and took the card in his coat pocket and followed Kurama to the door. After many thank you's and promises not to tell anyone who he'd met, he was ushered out the door.

After making implicitly sure that Norton was not coming back, he walked incredulously back to the kitchen.

He found Iris sitting at the table, pouting. She looked up at him when he'd fully entered.

“Is he gone?” she asked.

“Yes. Although he now believes me to be the son of God.”

Iris grinned. “I had nothing to do with that, I swear!”

“I know. But I'm not sure that I should've let him leave without having him seen by a doctor.”

Iris smiled. “Don't worry. I think he'll be just fine.”

“Yes, well. I am sorry to have dropped in on you so unexpectedly again. It seems that the portal keeps moving around your house.”

“I noticed that. That means no bathroom is safe.” She replied.

“I'm sure that was just an accident. However, I should get going.”

Iris frowned. “Do what you must do. Will you return to see me again?”

Kurama smiled. “I'm sure I will.”

Iris smiled and walked to the door. “Have a nice day, Jesus.” She said as she closed the door.
