Chapter Six: Reactions
Three weeks later...
"Hey everyone!" I walked up to my friends. They were all standing around Yusuke and Kuwabara. The two boys were having an arm-wrestling match. Yusuke was winning.
"Nice to see you, Kaline," Kurama said, greeting me with a bright smile.
"It's very nice to see you too," I replied, giving him a kiss on the cheek. Kurama and I had been going on dates for the past few weeks, but the other spirit detectives hadn't found out about the relationship between Kurama and me. They hadn't even noticed the kiss I had just given the redhead.
"C'mon, Kuwabara, just give up already," Yusuke said, grunting with effort. He really wanted to win.
"I don't think so, Urameshi, "Kuwabara retorted, glaring at Yusuke.
"I call winner," I told everyone enthusiastically. I was curious to see how well I would do against Kuwabara or Yusuke.
"Then I get to go against you," Kurama added, slipping an arm about my waist.
"That should be interesting," I said, giggling. It was kind of hard to picture Kurama and I arm-wrestling.
"What's with your arm around Kaline's waist, Kurama?" Hiei asked, a hint of coldness in his voice. It sounded like Hiei was jealous or something. How strange.
"Isn't it obvious?" I wondered, giggling again. The look on Hiei's face was hilarious. "We've been going out on dates and such..."
"What?!" Yusuke exclaimed, losing his concentration. Kuwabara slammed Yusuke's fist down on the table triumphantly.
"Ha! I finally beat you, Urameshi," Kuwabara said, grinning from ear to ear.
"That wasn't fair!" Yusuke protested. "Kaline distracted me."
"Don't be such a sore loser, Yusuke," I scolded him. "Kuwabara beat you fair and square. Now why don't you get up so I can beat Kuwabara?"
"You actually think that you're going to beat me?" Kuwabara asked skeptically as I took Yusuke's place. Kurama stood right beside me, one hand on my shoulder.
"Of course," I replied, putting out my hand. "Shall we begin?"
Kuwabara took my hand and immediately began to try to press it to the table. In a small burst of energy (and magic), I beat back his assault and pressed his own hand to the table. Kuwabara shook out his hand when I released it, amazed at my strength.
"Unbelievable," he commented. "You don't look that strong, but you beat me rather easily. That was one of the shortest arm-wrestling matches I have ever had."
"I have to be strong to keep up with you guys," I explained, smiling brightly. "Now I get to go against Kurama."
"After you two are done with the competition, I want an explanation," Yusuke ordered.
"What kind of explanation do you need, Yusuke?" Botan asked. "Her earlier comment made everything very clear. She and Kurama have been going out. Judging by how they look at each other, they must care about each other quite a bit."
"Yeah, but..." Yusuke said softly, drifting off. He didn't want to argue with Botan at the moment, but he did seem okay with the fact that Kurama and I were together.
"I love Kurama," I told Yusuke. "Is that a good enough explanation for you?"
"Yeah," he stammered. "I guess so." Yusuke sounded surprised, not that I could blame him all that much.
"Do you love Kaline?" Hiei asked Kurama. His voice was curious and cold. The look he gave Kurama was not a nice one. I could sense Hiei move so that his katana would be easier to grab. What was going on?
"Yes, of course," Kurama answered without hesitation. "We confessed our feelings to each other on Christmas day."
Hiei lightly sighed at this, sounding sad. It was almost like he had given up something that he hadn't wanted to.
'What could he have possibly given up, and why did he sigh? I didn't even know he could sigh,' I thought, cocking my head slightly to one side.
"That long ago?" Botan frowned. "That does make sense. No one has seen a whole lot of you or Kaline for the past three weeks, so it is possible that we hadn't noticed. Although, why didn't you tell me, Kaline?"
"I don't know. I guess that I just kind of forgot," I hid my eyes in embarrassment. "I am sorry."
"Don't worry about it. I'm very happy for the two of you," Botan dismissed my apology. "I was wondering when you were going to tell Kurama how you felt. It was obvious to me how you felt about him, but no one else seemed to notice, including you."
"I think that it took a long time for both of us to notice," I commented, blushing a little.
Kurama laughed. "I realized that I loved her the day that we met."
"I realized that I loved you during our Christmas dinner," I added, smiling. "That was one of the best days of my life." Hiei started mumbling to himself as I continued to talk. "I got the perfect Christmas present that day... Kurama's love." With a quick kiss and a smile, Kurama and I proved to all four of them just how happy we were.
