“HIEI!!!” Sarah's voice echoed throughout the room as she called for her lover. They were now married and happily living in a new house paid for by the spirit prince. She stood in the bathroom as she waited for Hiei to join her to find out what was going on.
“HIEI!!!” She called once more. He was in the kitchen making something for the two to eat when he heard her scream for him, almost sounding like she was in a panic.
`Sarah? What is she yelling about?' He questioned. Then it dawned on him. Had everything they had gone through to help her cope with her problem fallen through? Was she still cutting herself? Now worried, he abandoned the food he had been cooking and rushed up the wooden steps to the room she was in with a stick-like thing in her hand.
“What is it?!” He asked in an eager tone. A grin was spread as wide as it could across her precious face as she stared into his eyes. She didn't answer him but merely continued to look at him.
“Koi…what is it?!” He demanded an answer.
“We're pregnant!!” She called, jumping up and down in joy. The little thing she held in her hand was an EPT test with the correct diagnoses on the small screen. She was expecting.
“What?” He asked a smile playing across his face in return to the great news he had been given. She nodded and threw her arms up to embrace him in a heart felt hug.
“We-…we are?!” He asked yet another question, stuttering as he hugged her back.
“Yes yes! I just took the test. I haven't had my…well you know in quite and while and so I was a little curious and here it is!” She squealed the last few words and parted from him only to give him a generous kiss. Hiei returned it and then smirked as he leaned away from her to look at her glowing face. He stared at her for a while, soaking in everything that had happened to him in past few years. He went from being completely alone and not believing in love to being head over heals for her. Then from being in love and depressed over the loss of his sister and hurting the person he loved more than ever to being married and now having children with her. Now that everything was going as planned, he was ecstatic. Sarah analyzed his features and knew he was content with everything but she saw something in him that she couldn't quite place.
“Hiei…is everything ok?...You want this right?” She asked him a little unsure now. His eyes widened slightly.
“Of course I do!” He replied, lifting her up and twirling her around. She laughed and once he stopped, kissed him once more. He set her down and she parted from him.
“I have to call people and tell them!” She said happily. He smirked and nodded in response. She walked off down the steps to the phone that was conveniently placed in the living room on the side table next to the couch.
“I can't believe it…” Hiei said to himself in a barely audible whisper. His tough guy act had nearly dissipated into nothing though it was still clearly there when dealing with enemies or Melissa. Just the thought of little replicas of him and Sarah running around the house made his eyes light up with gratification.
“Melissa, I have wonderful news!” Sarah called into the mouth piece of the phone.
“Well what is it?” Her voice could be heard clear as day in the receiver. She had been watching T.V. and not doing much of anything when she had called, so she was happy to hear from her in her time of need seeing as Yusuke was talking to Koenma briefly about a new case.
“I can't tell you now. I want you and Yusuke to come to dinner at our place tonight so we can tell you.” She answered her.
“Tell me!” She snapped back, hating to be left out of things. Melissa was a fairly patient person but when she was bored, she needed to be included in things whether it is something important like knowing her opponents weaknesses or something as stupid as where Kuwabara was, though that was never something she wanted to know.
“No! I will tell you tonight!” Sarah shot back with a slightly annoyed tone in her voice but calm and collected nonetheless. Melissa merely sighed loudly for a long few minutes and laughed a little at herself.
“Fine, when do you want us over?” She asked her, a smile on her face as she wondered what this good thing was that was being kept from her. Sarah shrugged.
“Around 6:30ish I guess.” She answered. They said their goodbyes, laughing at each other in the process. Hiei stood at the landing of the steps and saw her slowly setting the phone back down on the hook. She looked up as she heard him come in and grinned.
“I invited them to dinner to tell them the good news.” She informed him. He nodded and advanced towards her to sit on the couch with her.
“Hn. That's fine with me as long as you make Melissa back off and be nice to me.” He told her while placing an arm around her waist. She rolled her eyes with a little giggle.
“Hiei, she's sometimes nice to you but it's not like you're nice to her.” She replied as she recalled all the times the two had argued about stupid stuff. Melissa loved to annoy and bug the hell out of him, knowing she only got by without a scratch because of her friendship with the kitsune Hiei loved. He shrugged at this.
“She starts it, not me.” He said.
“That's a lie!” She began to laugh like it was one of the funniest things she had heard in the last few hours. He wrinkled his nose and looked down at her.
“Hn…all those times I am mean to her, she deserves.” He replied. She rolled her eyes once more and placed her arms around him as he did to her.
“Hm, well enough about that…we'll be a family soon.” She said in a low voice with a sigh. She couldn't wait to be pushing a stroller down the path at the park with her children that would share the same blood as her and Hiei. The evening soon came with the sun going down behind the horizon. Melissa and Yusuke arrived as planned and were helping in the kitchen when Hiei joined them with a fresh pair of clothes on. He had been training before they got there and Sarah had suggested that he change, not that he was opposing it. After a work out like the one he had been enduring only a few hours before, he welcomed a nice steaming shower and crisp, washed clothes on his back.
“So what is this news Melissa keeps bothering you about?” Yusuke asked with a smile as he took out a few place settings for the table. She glared at him as he said this.
“I'm not bothersome, I just want to know.” She replied with a playful nudge to his arm. He merely shrugged and chuckled a bit.
“I can't tell you until the food and everything is ready and we have the wine out.” Sarah answered with a shake of her head. Hiei smirked and poked the meat she had been cooking.
“Is this pot roast?” He asked her with a curious expression to his face. It looked like it, smelled like it and probably tasted like it but for some reason he still wasn't completely used to ningen foods. Sarah laughed a bit with a nod.
“Yes baby, it's pot roast. Your favorite.” She said, her eyes lighting up every time he spoke to her. She loved him with all her heart and it was taking all the energy she had in her to keep the news to herself.
“Then get this stuff on the table and pop open the alcohol so we can find out already. The suspense is killing me!” Melissa stated with a smirk, opening the cabinet where they had the best wines and liquors.
`Koi, you know you can't have any of it…' Hiei informed Sarah as they all sat down to eat. There was a small pause and she cursed under her breath. Yusuke looked up with a raised brow.
“…What was that about?” He asked her with shifty eyes, looking around the room. Melissa darted her eyes around as well with her fork in mid air, wondering what was going on.
“Oh nothing hehe…eh. I just forgot my own drink. Hehe.” She lied and stood up from her seat, getting a glass of water instead of her alcohol she already had placed on the table.
`I can give it up for them, I guess. Hehe.' She joked back to her husband. He smiled at this for the first time in front of their friends. Melissa's eyes widened and she backed away from the table in her seat.
“Oh my god…run for your lives, it's the apocalypse…Hiei smiled.” She told the rest. Yusuke looked up to see this ever so rare event but once she had even said a word, he brushed the look off his face immediately to replace it with a glare.
“See what I mean, Koi?” He asked her. “She always starts crap.” He added, pointing his fork at her. Sarah laughed as she placed her glass back down. Melissa merely smirked and stuck her tongue out.
“I demand to know what the big deal is, now!” She couldn't take it anymore, she had to know. It was killing her that they were keeping something from her. Yusuke shook his head with an eye roll though he wanted to know just as bad. He was actually surprised that he had even kept his cool for this long.
“Well…” Sarah began as she stood up with a glass back in her hand as if she were making a toast. Hiei stood up next to her as well and he placed an arm around her waist.
“I'm pregnant!” She announced. Their forks dropped onto their plates with a loud clang.
“WHAT?!?!” Melissa shouted with a huge grin on her face.
“Yeah! I found out today!!” She answered her. Yusuke jumped up from his seat and hugged her around the neck, wrenching her from Hiei's grasp.
“You're actually gonna have kids!” He called out, still hugging her with immense strength, a little bit too much for her to handle. Hiei growled and shoved him off.
“Yusuke…you're crushing me…” Sarah breathed as Hiei's movements did nothing to relieve the detective from Sarah's body.
“Oh yeah. Haha. Sorry.” He replied and let her go. She caught her breath and went back to her husband. Melissa stood up, shoving him away again to hug her.
“I can't wait! We have to think of names, have a baby shower, uhhm…fix a room.” She went on and on as she pulled apart from her best friend. Hiei's eyes widened as the reality of it all finally set in. He really was going to be a father. A living breathing thing was going to be greeted onto this earth soon that he was going to have to take care of. It was frightening in itself but he gladly welcomed the challenge as long as Sarah was there with him every step of the way. I mean, she had to have them, not him and that was going to be the hardest part. The night ended and a couple of weeks passed with Sarah worrying constantly about how fat she was going to get.
“It's only been a month and maybe a week, Koi. You are not fat!” Hiei called back to her from the other side of the bedroom as they got ready for bed. She was staring into the mirror with her shirt pulled up to just below her chest. Looking at herself sideways, she saw a small potbelly forming with her jeans out slightly.
“I am too! You just can't see it…” She snapped back, turning to look head on at herself. Her hips were rounding out only in the slightest bit, it was barely even noticeable.
“I want some ice cream…I'm going to get some.” She told her lover and grabbed her jacket after pulling her cotton shirt back down over her stomach.
“I can get it for you, Hn. I don't want you out at night anymore. Not with the baby.” Hiei replied, walking over to hug her from behind, his hand ghosting over her belly. Sarah smiled.
“Hmm, you're going to be a great daddy, Hiei.” She told him. He let his lips curl into a closed mouthed smile with his eyes closing.
“You're going to be a perfect mother…” He cooed, rocking them back and forth as they stood in front of the mirror. A few moments passed and Sarah's hunger was getting the best of her.
“Let's go hehe.” She giggled some and soon they were off down the street on the sidewalk. There was a Coldstone Creamery right down the street so they saw no need to waste gas when they could easily stroll down and get some on their own. Hiei got his rocky road cone and Sarah got her Chocolate Fudge Brownie cup and off they were once more down the sidewalk.
“Haha, what kind of name is Marshiqua anyway?” Sarah laughed with Hiei as they thought of ridiculous names for the baby though they had already decided on them once they found out they were twins; a boy and a girl named Chase and Kaline.
“Chase is a perfect name for a boy, don't you think?” Sarah asked as they walked passed an alley way overshadowed by the buildings around it, hiding enemies of the city.
“Yes. That's why I agree that it should be our son's name hehe.” Hiei answered her as he took her hand in his. Suddenly a man was walking behind them with draped clothing that swirled to the floor in a big mass of cloth. With the light of the street lamp, a scar could be seen on his cheek and a big, psychotic grin was visible with the shine of a pointy fang over its bruised bottom lip. Along with him was another man dressed in white with a big black fedora hat with a red feather sticking out of the side, a cigarette burning in the corner of his mouth with his hands in his pockets. He was looking down as if keeping things to himself as to not draw attention. Hiei noticed the two and could feel their demonic energy around them though they were not of his concern as he watched a pained expression cross over Sarah's face.
“Koi?” He questioned as she broke out into a sweat.
“H-Hiei…” She whispered in pain, her legs collapsing under her, her hand reaching up to lean herself against the cold, brick walls of an apartment building next to her. She held onto her stomach as it felt like there was a shard of something scraping at her insides.
“The babies…” She worried something was wrong with them but as Hiei used his jagan to make sure they were safe, he saw nothing wrong.
“It's not them, they are fine. What's wrong?!” He asked her as he knelt down beside her. The men had stopped abruptly as they saw them stop in their tracks, tending to something they had inflicted.
“I see there are a few problems here?” The one in the fedora asked with a New York accent, though it was clean and not tainted with the street roughness any other thug would obtain.
“Grrr, Back off!!” Hiei growled as he tried to find the problem and fix it fast.
“I believe that is not going to happen so I suggest you cooperate or else your little lady here with suffer along with the kids.” The other man replied with an annoyed Australian accent. He looked up, confused because he had never seen these people in his life and soon enough three more men appeared to join them.
“What the fuck do you want?!” He snapped with his hands clenching into fists as anger had risen to hatred and disgust. Sarah was wincing at the pain in her stomach, grasping at Hiei's arm tightly. Her head was pointed down with her eyes clamped shut as she tried to focus on something other than her children inside of her.
“You owe us a lot and if you don't do what I tell you then me and my friends here are going to get what we want by force. Now give us some tear gems and we'll be on our way.” The New Yorker demanded, grabbing Sarah by the hair and wrenching her head backwards to meet his gaze. One eye was orange with no pupil and the other was a natural blue. His grip was tight, almost tearing chunks of hair out of her head.
“GAHA!!” She screeched in pain.
“GET THE HELL OFF OF HER!!” Hiei yelled and ran at him to knock him away but a demon with extreme speed cut him off, slamming him into the wall with a crack of his back as his spine met head on with the hard surface. He grunted and tried to get free, failing as a second demon pinned him down.
“Why don't you cry for me, Sheila?” The Australian whispered into her ear as the other held her back.
“Please…let me go.” She begged. She was a strong fighter but in a situation like this, she didn't want to run the risk of losing her children. A swift kick to her stomach had her coughing up blood through gritted teeth, the red liquid staining her clothes.
“NO!” Hiei called as he watched, the scene burning into his brain as he watched them hurt her. He tried to get free, pulling his arms down and attempting to run forward but he was merely punch hard across the face with a deep scratch engraved into his cheek.
“Just do as we say and you can leave.” Another demon with a gruff voice spat. Hiei narrowed his eyes down with a glare, clenching his jaw.
“Let her go and I'll do whatever you want.” He told him as he stared at the ground, trying to get his vision clear from the punch to the face. He could hear Sarah screaming in agony as they manipulated their powers to cause her pain.
“PLEASE!! STOP!” She called. Another demon smacked her in the face, pulled her hair and dragged her to the floor. A bruise was seen on her neck as he grabbed her roughly, his nails digging into her flesh. He kicked her in the stomach over and over, another demon twisting her wrists for her to cry.
“Why don't you cry already?!” The New Yorker growled and banged her head against the cement ground of the sidewalk.
`I have nothing left…why don't they leave…me-…us…alone?' She questioned in her mind. It was true, she had cried so much when Hiei was in the hospital and when they had gone through there separation that she vowed never to cry again as a promise to him and he did the same. Everything was perfect with them and with the babies coming it was only to get better until now.
“I can't…I-…” She coughed up blood, her teeth stained as she gasped for air. Her lungs were trying as best as they could to continue inflating with oxygen but were slowly failing as a fist to the chest knocked the wind out of her.
“A woman's tear gems are highly valuable, more so than merely a man's, especially not an amiko.” He said as he pounded into her. She gasped for air; she would give anything she could for only a few more moments with Hiei.
“NO!!!!” Hiei called in pure anguish, his hand reaching out to save her though there was nothing he could do. The others were holding him back with immense force, causing him to just watch as his emotions were flooded over in sorrow. “GET THE HELL OFF OF ME!!” He shouted and caught one on fire only to be knocked down by the hilt of a club one had brought with them. He was sent flying into a wooden telephone pole breaking it with only a few inches keeping it together. He came back to hit him square in the jaw, his head turning with a loud crack as it was almost broken under the force. His eyes moved rapidly back and forth as a terrible side effect as if he were being shaken and couldn't stop. Soon he was passed out cold though not before hearing another blood curdling scream from Sarah before complete darkness over took him.
“This one isn't gonna do us any good.” The Australian threw her back down to the ground with a loud thump and snap as she landed on the cold pavement. Her eyes were still open as if looking for something familiar though her mind was completely shut down, devoid of what was going on around her.
---
The sound of the heart rate monitor going off in his head woke Hiei from his three day slumber. His eyes fluttered open as he saw the hospital gear around him. An I.V. was jabbed into his forearm and his finger was covered in a plastic material to check his pulse. Instead of the white gown with no back to it that they usually provided for their patients, he wore grey sweat pants and a white t-shirt since they thought he would be there for a longer period of time.
`Hn…Huh?...What am I…doing here?' He asked himself as he looked down to see bed sheet upon white sheet over him to keep him warm though now he was burning hot from all of the fabric. The room was not like he remembered from when he was placed there for the fall when he and Sarah were separated. Instead it was a smaller room with baby blue walls and a bathroom in the corner where a small light emanated as the switch was still up meaning someone had left it on. The blinds were open letting the sunlight through, stinging his eyes.
“Why am I-?” He began to say when suddenly visions of him and his lover getting ganged up on in the streets came to mind.
“SARAH!” He called out, ripping the I.V. from his skin and tearing off any breathing equipment from his chest though he began to wheeze as he entered the hallway. Doctors and nurses rushed passed him to the E.R. or wherever they were needed. One of them finally looked up from their desk and their clipboard when they heard Hiei tripping over cords and bumping into waiting chairs on a search.
“Sir?!” She called out, rushing to his side. “Sir, you need to stay in bed, you are severely injured!” She tried to get him back into his room but he was far stronger than she was and merely pushed her aside.
“I need to find her!” He growled as he tried to get to another room but his legs were beginning to give way, causing him to fall to the floor. He called in slight pain as he hit the tile and his eyes glazed over in sorrow as he thought about what they had done to Sarah; to his babies. He clawed at the floor, never wanting to get up; wanting to just fall into a dark void until he knew she was okay.
“Where is she?!...” His voice cracked, a woman rushed over to help him up.
“You must get into bed! It isn't good for you to be pushing yourself.” The good samaritan getting him to his feet. He wrenched his arm free of the old woman's grasp and began walking forward to continue his search.
“NOT until I find her!” Hiei shouted, calling attention to him.
“Who is `her'?” the nurse attending to him asked.
”MY WIFE!” He answered in annoyance. They of course had been brought in together, right? His eyes widened in realization.
`The men…they took her! THEY TOOK HER AWAY FROM ME!!!!' He yelled in thought as they forced him to sit in a chair that was placed against the wall in a secluded hallway. A lump in his throat formed as he thought about what they could have possibly been doing to her or have already done.
“I promised…” He whispered, his face blank of expression; of emotion as he sat with his knees brought up to meet his chest as he hugged his legs close to him.
“What?” the woman asked as she checked his dilation with a mini flashlight.
“I promised to keep her safe!! I FAILED! I SHOULD HAVE…I should have been better than I was!” He beat himself up over it. It was his fault and now she was gone, the twins were gone…he was alone. Tears formed in his eyes, this surprising him he wiped a lone drop off of his cheek.
`I promised I wouldn't cry…that there would never be a reason to.' He thought as more streamed down his face to drop to the floor. The humans that filled the place only saw puddles of water as they hit the floor but any demon could clearly see ruby tear gems litter the white around his feet.
“Hiei!” Melissa called as she entered the hospital after hearing the news that he had finally woken up. He didn't bother to look up at her, only stared into space, not wanting to join the real world.
“You're awake, finally.” She was relieved to know he was healthy but now she feared what his emotions would do to him if he found out about Sarah. She knelt down in front of him, trying to gain eye contact.
“Where is she!?” He grabbed her roughly by the shoulders and shook her slightly as he demanded to know where Sarah was. His cheeks were wet from the salty water, not bothering to wipe it away.
“I-…she's-“
“TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED TO HER!” His voice cracked and shook violently as he needed to know.
“She's…in a coma.” She answered him with sorrow in her voice as well. He let her go and shook his head, his eyes draining of all vibrancy it ever held from his love for her. His face going pale and his hands shaking as if in fear.
“Wha-…what?” He squeaked in a barely audible whisper. She nodded, lowering her head to let her bangs fall in front of her face.
“I'm sorry Hiei…she-“
”NO! You're lying! She's not…she can't be…what about the babies?! WHAT ABOUT THEM?!” He shook her by the arms again, his finger nails piercing into her skin though not enough to break it. She held tight to the legs of the chair he had been sitting in so she wouldn't fall back and let her gaze meet his.
“They don't know yet…they still have to run some tests.” She replied in a low tone. He fell back into the seat and closed his eyes, banging his head once against the wall. His hands clasped tight around the arm rests as he tried to hold back even more tears. His throat was closing as something was coming up.
“I have to…” He began and bolted out of the hallway to his bathroom, throwing up in the toilet. His crying made him breathe hard, causing him to feel sick. He gasped for air, wheezing as the fluid continued to force itself out of his body. His stomach contracted as he hunched forward over the bowl, his body aching. Salted water poured down his cheeks with every miserable thought that came to mind.
“Mr. Jaganshi…” A male doctor entered the room with a silver, metal clipboard in hand, a stethoscope around his neck with a white lab coat to make it all official.
“What do you want?!” He snapped back, wiping his mouth of the regurgitated hospital food they made him eat to keep him nurtured while he was out. The man stepped forward and his eyes narrowed down to see Hiei on the floor on his knees, his head resting on the rim of the seat.
“You are not well right now…but you can see your wife while you are here.” He informed him. Hiei glared back up at him with fire burning in his eyes, he wanted this man dead and rotting in the ground though there seemed no reason for this want to be fulfilled.
“I want to see her now.” His voice cracked greatly as he struggled to get to his feet. “Take me to her…” He begged. Just then a nurse rolled in a wheelchair to do his bidding. When they brought him to her bedside, she had clean cuts and bruises all over her once perfect cheeks. Her hair had been combed and her fingers were spread as her hands lay at her sides. Her lips were parted as a tube was inserted into her mouth, helping her to breathe. The heart rate monitor beeped slowly, almost as if she was about to leave the world they had once been so comfortable in. They locked his chair into place and left him to be with her, closing the door behind them.
“Look what they did…” He said to himself, taking her hand in his to feel her warm skin on his finger tips. Her arms were littered with now fading gashes and one long scratch that would most likely leave a scar in its wake. A patch was placed on her forehead with surgical tape, no doubt for the blow to the head she had received when they threw her to the pavement and left her for dead.
“I'm sorry…I'm sorry I broke my promise…I couldn't keep you safe.” He sobbed while remembering the screams she voiced as the thugs assaulted her with their fists to her stomach, causing a fire to burn within her.
“You'll wake up…I know you will…Please…” He pleaded like a child who had just watched their dog get run over by a car, only to him, her life was more important than some stupid animal. The night passed with the once dead silence in the room shattered with Hiei's pleads and cries. He woke up the next morning to the sun shining in through the window and birds chirping as if the worst thing that could have happened to him never happened. He remembered where he was again and looked up to see Sarah had not changed any through the night. Soon a doctor walked in to check on them.
“When do you think she will be waking?” He asked with eagerness tugging in his voice, hoping it would be soon. The doctor let out a deep sigh as he checked the I.V. drip pouch, making sure she was getting the right amount and not too much. Hiei was getting a little aggravated at how long it was taking this person to answer him.
“…I'm sorry but…we suspect…that she will be in this vegetative state for quite a while.”
“How long are we talking!!!??” He growled back with his hands clenching into fists, a vein popping out in his forearm. The doctor hesitated, his head drooping down to look at the floor.
“We aren't sure yet…” He backed away as he answered the half koorime, seeing him teeming with anger and hurt.
“Get out…” Hiei said to him demandingly. Never looking back up to stare at the man, only pointing at the direction he came in from.
“Sir I have to check her-“
”I SAID GET OUT!!” He shouted, the door seemingly opening on its own though Hiei was using his telekinesis to his best advantage. The medical physician scurried out of the room, never looking back. Sarah's husband looked down at her with dark circles under his eyes, wishing he could talk to her and for her to respond.
A week passed and then four more days with no changes in her daily health or the way she acted. Hiei rested by her side constantly, never leaving to even sleep. He tried to carry on conversation like normal, telling her how much he loved her and there was no one else for him. It was late one night in hospital with his head placed gently on the bed next to her side, her hand in his when suddenly her fingers clasped tighter around his palm. This made his eyes snap open and his head to rise from his not so sound slumber.
“Koi?” He asked. She clamped tighter on his hand, her eyes moving rapidly with her lids closed over them.
“H-...Hiei…” She wheezed, the plastic in her mouth messing up her words. “Please…” A tear slid down out of the corner of her eye to roll down the side of her face. His eyes widened as he saw this, quickly wiping it away. He took the breathing mechanism out of her mouth to help her to speak.
“Sarah?” He questioned. He knew there was no real risk in taking it away from her; he knew she could breathe on her own. Suddenly she looked up to see him right in front of her.
“HIEI!” She called out, frightened and pained as she remember what happened.
“I'm right here Koi…Don't worry, I'm right here.” He replied as she threw her arms around him to bring him into a tight embrace.
“I was so scared…I'm sorry!” She choked out. The tears never seemed to stop and she never wanted to let him go. “I thought they would kill you! I was so worried…” She continued to sob, tightening her grip on him.
“Sshhhh.” He tried to comfort her, rubbing her back in small circles. He hated to see her this way, not about him. “I'm here now…we're fine.” He added calmly.
“I love you…Please know that!” She begged, squinting her eyes closed to cease the water from escaping their prison. Hiei nodded, holding her tightly with his fingers intermingling in her hair.
“I do…I love you too.” He replied, pulling away slightly to look down at her. She averted her eyes to lock gazes with him. “Everything will be okay.” He whispered, moving her hair from her face. As this was going on, the doctor had gotten the results from Sarah's tests.
“Damn…” He sighed, walking down the halls and entering their room to see that Sarah was awake and Hiei was now glowing with joy that his wife was going to be fine. He cleared his throat to get their attention and walked over to the other side of the bed that Hiei wasn't on.
“I'm glad to see that you have recovered.” He greeted them. Hiei merely glared and nodded. Sarah rested her head back on the pillow.
“Yeah…heh...me too.” She replied with a bright smile gracing her features.
“Is there a reason you came, Doctor?” Hiei was getting annoyed with him. The one time he is able to see Sarah awake and be with her, he has to act like a third wheel.
“Actually…yes there is. It concerns the children.” He answered with a shaky tone in his voice. The couple straightened up when he said this, eager to hear how they were.
“I'm sorry to say this…but they didn't make it.” He finally revealed.
“…W-…what? NO! That can't be!” Sarah called out, her hands grasping the sheets.
“I'm sorry.” He added. Hiei growled loudly and ran around to meet the man's gaze.
“ARE YOU SURE!?” He snapped, grabbing the results from his scrawny little fingers and tearing through it. Sarah called out in complete agony of the heart as she cried even more. The paper he landed on stated exactly what he had been dreading to know; `Children have been terminated' was written in red letters to emphasize his loss. The clipboard fell to the ground with a loud clang, twirling around to land on the floor as the room filled with silence, broken by Sarah's sobs.
“My Babies…” She breathed through coughs as her breath quickened. Hiei ran to her side, held her hand, giving it a squeeze. He stared blankly into space as he lowered himself into the seat that was placed conveniently by her bed.
“I'm…s…sorry.” He wheezed, beginning to cry as well. “I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!” He repeated over and over his throat hitching with each breath he took as he let it all out. Sarah squeezed his hand tightly and called out, having trouble breathing, coughing and gagging though not letting things escape her mouth. The day continued as it normally would, at least for the other inhabitants of the hospital. Hiei crawled into the bed with Sarah and they talked in whispers while they continued to cry.
“Why us…baby why did this happen to us?” Sarah asked Hiei. Of course he blamed himself. If he had done something about the men that were following them before maybe none of this would have happened. If he had just made her stay at the house while he got the things she wanted the babies would still be in her stomach and alive to be his children. He thought it was cruel payback for the ruthless life he lived. He may have gotten Sarah but destiny made sure he would be in agony at least for a little while.
“I don't know…” He sniffed, trying to be strong for her. He lifted his hand to rest on her tear stained cheek and wiped the remaining water from her face. “I guess all we can say is…they're in a better place now.” He choked, beginning to cry again. Sarah put her arms around him to make him feel better for once. He had always been there for her and now she needed to return the favor.
“I should have done something!” He called out, crying in her shirt. “It was all my fault!” He added. Her eyes widened as she heard these heartbreaking words pour out of his mouth. She hugged him tightly.
“No! Hiei Jaganshi it is not your fault, do you hear me!?” She snapped at him.
`How can he possibly think the loss of our children is his fault?!' She thought.
“Yes it is! I should have protected you.” He sobbed into her shoulder. She shook her head and her eyes flood over in sorrow.
“NO! It was neither of us. It was those thugs!” She stated, rocking him back and forth. The room was cold and barren as they tried to comfort each other though it seem that in their hearts, they would never feel the same. There was something missing and it was their son and daughter. They were supposed to be parents and walked them in the park together but it seemed like just a faint dream that was destined to never com true.

A few years passed and not once did a day go by that the couple thought about the baby boy and girl they had lost that fateful day. It was painful but both had come to realize that it wasn't their fault and that they would always be looked out for by them from the heavens. Soon they were graced by the birth of a baby boy by which they named Chase Michael Jaganshi in honor of the twin that died.
“You once had an older brother and sister.” Sarah told her son when they were playing in the living room.
“Really?” He asked. He was only four and looked just like his father.
“Yeah, Kaline and your brother's name was Chase too.” She smiled. Hiei smirked as he watched his true love and little son talking from the kitchen. He sat in Sarah's lap with a story book in his hand. She knew he had always wanted siblings and who knew? Maybe they would have more but right now he was all they needed.
“Yeah, and I bet they would have been the best brother and sister you could ever have.” Hiei stepped in and sat next to the two.
“Cool! Maybe I can have a little brother too.” Chase smiled and let out a small laugh as he said this. “I can be da best big brother ever.” He grinned from ear to ear.
“Yeah...” Sarah replied reminiscently and looked over to Hiei.
“That would be nice.” She added and Hiei looked into her eyes lovingly with a nod of his head and gave her a peck on the cheek.
