Chapter Three: “What's the assignment, Koenma?”
Finally finding a park that wasn't crowded with tourists, Chiara found a hidden spot where she could open the portal. After Chiara opened the portal, the other Tanteis stepped through, and with a final sweep of the area, Chiara stepped through and landed softly outside Koenma's office. Before joining her detectives, she turned and closed the portal to the human world. Motioning to the other girls, they approached the large wooden desk that sat outside Koenma's tall office doors.
“Hello Chiara, Girls,” Ayame, Koenma's secretary said when they reached the desk. “Let me tell His Highness that you're here.” She buzzed the intercom and quietly announced that the Tanteis he had been expecting had arrived. After hearing a not-so-quiet reply that they were to come in right away, Jorge, Koenma's assistant, opened the doors and ushered the girls inside.
As she passed, Chiara whispered to the blue ogre, “He's grumpy?”
The ogre whispered back. “Yep. He thought you'd be here sooner.”
“Well,” Chiara replied, “I've not slept and we had a hard time finding a safe place to open a portal.”
“Better tell him that.”
Chiara walked up to the desk and bowed before the Godling. “Most honorable Prince Koenma, please forgive my lateness. We had considerable difficulty in finding a secure place to open a portal without being seen by normal humans.”
As the desk chair spun around, the diminutive prince came into view. “See that this is not a lingering problem, Storms. Have you told your team of this mission?”
Chiara looked up from the floor, surprised. “Of course not, Your Highness. You gave me strict instructions not to.”
“Right. Just making sure.” Koenma replied. He looked at the other girls and took a deep breath. “This mission is a highly important one. I need you five to train a set of four Tanteis for the next dark tournament.”
The girls began to protest, but Chiara cleared her throat and motioned the attention back to Koenma. He swallowed once before telling them where their mission would occur. “You'll be training them in the ningenkai, due to parole restrictions regarding one of the Tanteis.”
At this, Chiara spoke up. “You didn't tell me there was a paroled demon among them…let me guess, the troublemaker, right?” At Koenma's nod, Chiara mentally decided that she would handle that one herself.
“Cryssy was the next to speak up. “Well, if that's it, I need a question answered. Why did we get drafted for this? It seems too easy for detectives of our class.”
Before Koenma could reply, Chiara stepped in. “If I'm not mistaken, there's something very special about these Tantei. Even more telling, he's chosen his most experienced Tanteis to train his newest. Obviously, they're headed for big things.” She looked back at Koenma. “Right?”
The Godling nodded. “As always. Now,” He opened a portal to Genkai's temple. “This is where you'll be going. Do your best, I'm counting on the five of you.” And with that said, he turned around and the girls approached the temple.
