Chapter 4: “So…This is it?”
The girls crossed through the portal, landing gracefully on the soft grass in front of the sprawling temple. They brushed themselves off and waited for Chiara to lead them to the object of their mission. Adjusting herself, Chiara waited until she felt ready and then began walking towards the entrance of the temple.
What do you think, Lylls? Crystalline asked in her sister's head.
What do you mean?
This mission. Why are these scrubs so important? Doesn't K-sama know that we're his best and brightest? Why not get someone who actually has training in their job description?
Sensing her younger sister's hostility rising, she tried to calm her down. I guess we'll find out soon enough. Koenma usually has a reason for everything he does.
Crystal didn't reply, and closed the mental connection.
They all stayed silent, watching their leader, who was attempting to mentally reach out to anyone in the temple who could feel her presence to let them know that their group was not approaching with malevolent intentions. Suddenly, she felt a demonic ki inside the temple and she reached out to it as strongly as she could.
~*~*~ Inside the temple ~*~*~
Hiei sat on the windowsill, taking a nap and waiting for Kurama, the Detective, and the baka to return from school as well as for Yukina to return from the market when he suddenly was hit with a mental message, courtesy of his jagan. Hiei fell off of the windowsill, but quickly caught himself before he hit the ground as he listened. `We mean no harm. We're looking for the Reikai Tantei of Koenma, Prince of the Dead.' The demoness was close, if his jagan was correct. Sensing nothing however, he prepared his katana and waited by the temple doors.
~*~*~ With Chiara's Group ~*~*~
“Aha!” Chiara cried softly. The others looked at her, confused. She smiled sheepishly and replied, “I think I found a Tantei.” The girls smiled at each other, knowing that their travel was almost complete. Their pace quickened and they began to climb the numerous stairs to the temple entrance. When they finally reached the doors, one of them flew open and Chiara felt the cold tip of a katana at her throat. She looked carefully down the blade to see who wielded it and was surprised to see a small boy with spiky black hair that bore a white starburst in the front.
“State your purpose, ningen.” He said gruffly.
First off,” Chiara replied. “I'm no ningen. The closest I have are these two,” she said, pointing to Lylly and Crystal. “And they're only ningen by reincarnation and appearance.”
When the boy didn't move the katana, she continued. “We're here to see Urameshi Yusuke and the other Reikai Tantei. We mean them no harm, Koenma-sama sent us.”
He frowned even further as the katana disappeared and was sheathed. “Hn,” he said, turning. “come.” They followed him into the temple and towards a large living area. When they all entered, he turned and looked at the group. “Wait here,” he ordered, then added, “quietly.” Then the boy sat on the windowsill and closed his eyes.
Slightly stunned by the gruffness of their makeshift host, they all looked at each other. Chiara opened mental connections with the four other girls and sat down.
Okay, girls. This is one of the Tanteis; he fits the profile for the one called Hiei. Be careful around him...Bad temper. He can't kill ningens because of his probation, but demons are another matter, so watch what you say.
So you're saying that Analeia shouldn't speak then? Sakura asked, poking Analeia in the ribs from her spot next to her. The other girl's eyes squinted and she smacked the back of Sakura's head. Before Sakura could retaliate, Chiara's voice boomed in their heads.
Quit it, you two! The last thing we need is for the two of you to mess up this mission. This is a great chance for each of you to prove yourself to the toddler and possibly get your own Tanteis. Keep your eyes on that prize, ladies, that's what we're shooting for. And if all we have to do is whip these lax boys into shape, I say let's kick their butts into the kind of discipline that we're known for.
The girls all agreed, and quickly began to plan how best to get the youngest Tanteis into tournament fighting shape. Their best idea would be to split them up and each train as they had been trained. Feeling like things had been settled; Chiara broke the connection and opened her eyes. She looked up and was greeted by hard ruby irises boring into her green ones. Cloaking her surprise, she leaned back and crossed her arms across her chest.
“May I help you?” she asked coolly.
“It's stupid to talk in silence when others can hear.” He replied.
Chiara's face gave her confusion away as the boy nodded once and returned to his windowsill. She sat in shock as the girls looked worriedly at their captain. Chiara just smiled lightly and motioned for them to not to worry.
Suddenly, the door opened and a boy with slicked back black hair lumbered in, a worn briefcase in hand and carrying a large brown paper bag. Following a moment later was a boy with puffy orange hair, also holding a worn briefcase and grimacing under the weight of the paper bag that he, too carried. The group of girls turned to see the source of the noise and saw the last two newcomers; a tall person holding an immaculately-kept briefcase (undistinguishable except for their long, flowing red hair that was not hidden by the two bags that they carried), and a very short girl with light green hair and a warm smile. The quartet left the doorway and walked down the hallway and out of their sight. After a moment, the boy with the katana walked to the temple doors and closed them. He looked back at the girls, squinting at them with a silent command to stay put, and walked after the group that had entered.
~*~*~ In the kitchen ~*~*~
“Thanks for the help, Hiei.” Yusuke said, putting the bag onto a counter with a thud.
“Hn.” He replied, quickly emptying the bags' content onto the counter and gathering up items. He flitted away and returned, repeating this until there was nothing left in the four bags that had been left there. When he turned around, he saw that the Baka had decided to start drooling and flirting with Yukina. Hiei growled softly and moved to advance on the boy, but a hand stopped him. He looked up and glared at Kurama, who did nothing in return.
“Don't. Tell me, who else is here? It feels like there is more than just your presence here.” The Kitsune asked.
“Hn. Other room. Girls.” And left the room.
Kurama followed and stopped when he reached the doorway, looking at the guests.
