Neila: She really does! But that must suck for readers, don’t we all hate cliffies?
Rina: Not unless you're a writer
Hitori: Yup!
Neila: Oh, joy. She's doing that again.
Hitori: Yup!
Rina/ Neila: -_-****** ... We're the <i>only</i> ones sane.
Hitori: Yup! Now enjoy the chapter! ^___^ (I tried to make it longer...^_^;)

Chapter 3: Assignment
You opened your eyes groggily. Oh bright, cursed, noon, bright, sunlight, why must you burn into the eyes of one who wishes to sleep the world away?
You had dozed your way to noon and were currently being blinded by the light of a noontime sun. With a sigh, you jumped quietly off your nice little bed and put on your boots.
'It looks like a good time to resupply. I'll get a bite to eat and survey the place a little.' you thought to yourself while you did a knot. Your eyes caught a shine and you looked down at your wrist with a small smile.
On your wrist was, a very small rose wrapped in a light chain, tattoo-like mark. The rose had an emerald shine to it and the chain surrounding it was a light gold- you never really found out why.
You found it on your wrist around your junior high time. It started of as a mark you thought was just glitter because of the way it shined and waved it off. But as time passed, it got bigger and started to take shape. You didn’t tell anyone and was quite amused with it. It was located where the wrist bent forward, merely an inch long now. It stopped growing and stayed permanently on your wrist. You smiled at it, not really knowing why.
Your hands managed to fix the laces with out you noticing, strange how muscle memory works. That's how you learned how to use your daggers anyway.
You stood up and fixed your cloak at a mirror, fixed your ponytail, fixed the mask over your face, fixed your blades' positions, fixed your gloves, fixed your nails, fix-... scratch the nail comment. And you went out the door noiselessly and locking it for obvious reasons.
Walking out to the street, scanning for a good store, finding one, and walking to its direction is what you did.
You finished getting supplies and was walking aimlessly up the street when you felt something try to enter your mind, you stopped walking.
'WTF?'
Your immediate reaction was to put a barrier in your mind and try to locate the whatever trying to get in your head. You did but you weren’t able to locate the perpetrator and whoever tried to get in your head was still poking at it with the persistence of a fruit loop hamster. [1]
Suspecting a demon, you masked your voice and spoke to it. (telepathic conversations in <i>italics</i>)
<i>You: "What do you want? I haven’t met a Jagan user before"
Demon: "You know about the Jagan then. You're a ningen though"
You: "So what do you want?"
Demon: "Are you the Demon Slayer?"
You: "..."</i>
You couldn’t see him (you knew he was a HE) but you could tell he could see you. Whoever he was, he had a Jagan eye. You knew about it, being the grand daughter of a suspected witch of her time. Anyway, back to the current issue. The demon knew who you were. If this demon did with out you noticing, that could be very fatal.
<i>Demon: "Thought so"
You: "What do you want with me?"</i>
The demon paused next and he stopped trying to get inside your head. Soon, the feeling of him in the area disappeared suddenly and you sighed. Relieved and annoyed.
Relieved that this demon was in the village but didn’t cause any harm to it.
Annoyed on how it knew who you were. Not by name, but in general.
No one really knew your name anymore- besides you of course. They often just referred to you as the Demon Slayer.
You continued with your walk. You didn’t need to pursue the demon if it held no grudge against you, or ill will against the village you temporarily took shelter in. But you did feel on edge. What if other demons knew of your positions? Daaaaammnnnn theeemmm.
-----------------------------------------------
[Normal POV]
Kurama had his back on the wall with his arms folded over his chest and his eyes closed. He wasn’t sure if he should've followed the Demon Slayer to where he went, he seemed like the type of person who preferred to be left alone and unnoticed. Calculating in his already complex mind to figure out the best way to build an alliance with him and get him to help them on their current mission. But the data provided by Koenma wasn’t even sufficient enough to know his nationality, what he looks like or even his gender. The data was mostly on his movements: constantly jumping from village to village.
Yusuke had his own thoughts. This guy seemed... just plain weird. He saw that outfit he wore and he could almost smell blood shed from a demon and the guy didn’t look the least bit injured. After what Koenma told them, the guy seemed unreal. Does he really have the power to do that? And would he actually help? And a lot more. He hadn’t had this many questions to answer since there were exams in school.
Kuwabara had fallen asleep on the couch Yusuke sat on earlier. It seemed he was tired out because early in the morning, he was woken by an annoying feeling in his mind that there were demons, he thought was just his imagination. When he finally got the strength to get up and tell someone about it, the feeling disappeared. Thus, succeeding to piss him off, make him very tired and giving him a head ache.
Hiei had appeared once again out of nowhere. It looked like his speed had increased even more throughout the years. Obviously, they would've all had gotten stronger. Putting that aside, everyone's attention was now focused on the fire ice apparition. Kuwabara had even woken up.
"I made contact with the Slayer" he said in his monotone.
"Really? What happened? Got anything?" Yusuke asked.
Hiei looked at him with the don’t-ask-too-many-questions-and-I-might-spare-your-life look. "He can block my Jagan and he doesn’t really have reiki"
"So, it’s just like Koenma said, huh?" Kurama asked. Hiei shut his eyes in a yes.
"That brings us back to where we started!" Kuwabara went into a sitting position.
Kurama walked over to the coffee table and sat down "Afraid so. I guess we have to approach him head on. And no Yusuke, not in physical battle" Yusuke gave him a look and turned away in playful anger.
Hiei took his seat on the window still and looked out the door. He'd have no choice but to join the moron party plus one sane kitsune when they went off to look for the Demon Slayer. How did this ningen manage to block the Jagan? He wondered without showing it visibly and continued to stare out the window. And that power...
-----------------------------------------------------
[Your POV]
Your hidden knapsack was full and ready for departure even if you didn’t plan leaving today. You liked being a day or two early, buys you time to sleep. You just needed about 4 meters to go to get to the inn but you suddenly froze.
No one, but two demonic presences were in the inn. You relaxed when you saw a calm human come out. 'Good, no panic. Either they're class A demons, similar, or this feeling is screwed. Wait, if they know I'm here...'
You stepped in and walked to your room casually. As you expected, someone was waiting for you. A guy with black hair slicked back. He wore a white shirt and jeans making you and him look like you were both in some sort of time warp.
You looked at him steadily. He didn’t look bad in both perspectives... 'Stupid thoughts... must erase you from mind'
He had his back on the wall with arms folded across his chest. He looked at you expectantly "Hey, Demon Slayer"
---------------------------------------------------- (thought I was gonna end there huh? ^___^)
You twitched slightly.
The black-haired guy dragged you into a room along the hallway with 3 other guys. One looked like he needed hair dye that was any color BUT orange- he argued with the guy that brought you there.
During the little scene, you stole glances at the other two in the room.
One sat at a window still, seemingly asleep and apparently favored dark colors- although he seemed asleep, you knew better. He had a familiar feeling around him...a feeling that you had just met recently. He had hair- defying gravity-ish, and a bandana over his forehead, and... something more than that.
The last sat on a round table alone, watching you with interest- but what caught your attention most was he had an amazing pair of emerald eyes, which unfortunately, you only caught a glimpse of it since you turned away when you thought you were about to make eye contact. He had the feeling of another...something/someone...in him.
Annoyed with all the unspecified observations you picked up, you pushed them away from your mind.
Your eyes drifted back to the mini battle with the black haired guy and the orange haired guy and you smiled slightly.
Someone cleared his throat and everyone looked at him. "Yusuke, Kuwabara, we have work to do remember?" the emerald-eyed redhead said sternly. The two stopped the fight and you began your "meeting".
They had you sitting on the table and each of them took a seat except the one wearing black who continued his perch on the window still.
The one that brought you there began. "So, we know you're the Demon Slayer. We're Reikai Tantei, I'm Urameshi Yusuke, that's Kuwabara Kazuma, Minamino Shuichi and the one there's Hiei."
A bell of recognition came when you heard those names. You momentarily pondered but waved it off to be forgotten for a while.
You nodded to show you understood and he continued. "We're on a mission to close... the gates from the Makai to the Ningenkai and... well..."
You raised your eyebrow in confusion. The emerald-eyed one he called Shuichi spoke up. "What he means is, we need help. The prince of Reikai asked us to ask you, Demon Slayer."
With your face half covered, it’s hard to believe they got the message- you gave them a look that asked: what kind of help? And also, why me?
"Because," Shuichi started, "You have a special power that a ningen, or maybe even demons don’t have. How else were you able to defeat all those demons and still be alive?"
"And you can probably sense demons too, right? Go ahead, point to the demons in the room" Yusuke said.
You paused for a second and slowly raised your finger to Shuichi, Hiei and Yusuke.
Kuwabara was startled a bit. "Urameshi?"
You made a sign that meant 1/2. You could sense that Yusuke wasn’t a pure blooded demon and that Shuichi and Hiei were the demons you felt outside the inn.
Now it made sense to you. Your goal would be set if you followed them in their mission, your goal to stop demons from freely entering the Ningenkai and killing humans for the sake of it- or eating their flesh.
Meanwhile, the guys seemed amazed at your ability. They could tell you were thinking about it and held their breath.
You looked up at them and nodded. They breathed a sigh of relief and Yusuke stood up and stretched.
"Phew! That was intense. Well, now that you’re going with us, you'd better get used to us" he said. You grinned a little and stood up from your chair as well, only you walked a little over to Hiei.
<i>You: "So you're the Jagan user from earlier" (masking your voice)
Hiei: "Hn"</i>
You turned and left the room to go to your own with a sudden thought that you could ponder over. 'Now what?'
--------------------------------------------------
[Normal POV]
Yusuke watched you go to your room. "Seems like a nice guy- but he's even less talkative then Hiei here"
Kuwabara went to go out of the room. "If you ask me, he's hiding something"
"Well, thanks for stating the obvious Kuwa"
"Shut up Urameshi!"
"Where are you going anyway?"
"I'm gonna phone Yukina" (Hiei twitches)
"Really? Oh that reminds me, I have to call Keiko and see how she's doing too"
"Aww, that's real sweet Urameshi"
"Shut up!"
"You started it!"
The two continued this argument till they walked out of the inn and were on the streets.
Kurama sighed and looked at the door you had gone through. He was observing your every move, trying to read you. When you stood up earlier, you went a little over to Hiei. Which means you knew it was him with the Jagan.
He turned a little to look over to Hiei and walked over to him. "What did he say?" he asked in a low tone.
"He just confirmed I had the Jagan eye. He can even mask his voice when he's talking to me that way"
"What do you think?"
"He's definitely hiding something. He also seemed to want to stop the other demons' movements as well. What about you?"
"Well, he agreed to go with us and I think that's a possibility. But since he didn’t even tell us his name, I'm not sure if he trusts us enough. He doesn’t seem to want to talk like he was mute, and there's a nagging feeling I get when I'm around him"
"You think two you met?"
"He doesn’t seem old enough to know Youko and he's a pure ningen to boot. I'm not sure- maybe a concealment spell or... something completely different."
-------------------------------------------------
You looked at yourself at the mirror in your room. The dead bodies of your family suddenly flashed in your mind. You doubled over and clutched you head, silently begging for the images to go away.
Uncried tears stay inside their hidden containers.
"...stop it. I don’t want to see it anymore..." you whispered into the air. You fell on your knees and stayed in that position.
