Chapter 4: Operation
You opened your door with your bag still hidden in your cloak. Today, you were leaving Kashiqui Village.
Since your meeting with the Reikai Tantei, you've been observing them.
Yusuke Urameshi is the leader of the detectives. A bit brash, uses Rei gun and is a fearless kind of person. He seems to be rather... erm... energetic? Although he has a lot of wasted movements, he's a great fighter.
Kazuma Kuwabara is his best friend and frankly, the two don’t act like it. But things would be very boring with out him and Yusuke's sparring and occasional battles. He wields a Rei-ken and he's... How’d they put it? He’s honorable I guess. (^_^;)
Hiei Jaganshi is a bit like you, only a little though. He's the quiet, rational, and short-tempered one in the group and as you suspected, he favored dark colors. He's the only one you've made verbal contact to... that was telepathic though so I'm not sure if it counts. He's a lot less wasteful with movements (compared to Yusuke) and has a tweaked, demonic speed, thus, making him very skillful in battle.
Last but not least is Shuichi Minamino, or as nicknamed, Kurama. He's by far the most complex being you've ever encountered. He's rather levelheaded and in all aspects very intelligent. You didn’t know his fighting style because he hasn’t taken part of the mini battles between the other members of Reikai Tantei. He was really polite although he'd still look at you every now and then in an analyzing kind of way.
Well, it wasn’t really surprising since you haven’t told them anything about anything.
You didn’t talk. Maybe another time you'd tell them, you've always been very cautious and didn’t like giving away details about yourself. But they didn’t even know your name! This was unfair to them but you were still debating about when.
'Well, I'll have to soon.' you thought to yourself.
You walked down the hallway to the exit of the inn to see the detectives waiting but their backs were on you. Casually, you walked over to them and put a gloved hand on Yusuke's shoulder.
"Whoa!" Yusuke jumped up slightly and turned to look at you. You smiled a bit and waved apologetically as everyone's attention was on you.
"Oh, hey Slayer. Ready?" Yusuke said, recovering from the sudden shock. You nodded and all five of you walked out.
'He didn’t even make a sound when he walked to us. I barely noticed he was even there' Yusuke thought as he watched you still a bit shocked.
Kurama took the lead, followed distantly by Hiei, Kuwabara in front of you and Yusuke at the back.
'His footsteps were so quiet even Hiei didn’t notice him walk over till the last second.' Kurama thought to himself, looking over his shoulder without being seen, at you.
Soon, you all reached a vehicle similar to a jeep (think Gensoumaden Sayuki). You raised an eyebrow but continued to walk to it with the others.
To your surprise, Kuwabara took the driver's seat. Kurama took the passenger seat, Yusuke hopped on to the back, and Hiei didn’t even get on.
"Hey Slayer! Hop on! Hiei doesn’t take to these things" Yusuke hollered to you. You side glanced at Hiei and hopped on the back where to your left was the driver seat.
Kuwabara turned to look at you. "Bet you didn’t expect me driving" he said. You smiled and Yusuke laughed.
"Course he wouldn't Kuwa. After being around you, who'd expect you could actually drive?" Yusuke said.
"Watch it Urameshi!"
"So, remember where we're headed?" Kurama asked looking at you. You nodded and pointed roughly due southwest.
It was the Siron Village- but it was barely called that anymore. Demons attacked the place so much there weren’t any people brave enough to set foot on it for 2 years. From what you heard, it was just a pile of ruins.
"I think you notice a demonic presence somewhere there in Siron Village." Kurama looked at the direction you pointed. Kuwabara started the jeep and you all went off to Siron Village. Hiei had gone ahead.
You looked at the barren landscape behind you. Memories passed by as you remembered how you always did this when you were in a car, back when the demons weren't raising havoc. Back when they were still...there.
~.~.~.~
"Road trip!" Nea yelled at the top of her lungs as she stood from her seat.
"Shush up sis" you said to her, promptly pushing down her head so she'd sit.
"__(your name)__-chaaaaan" she whined pulling at your sleeve. You sighed and patted her head.
"You two are so loud" Shiro said quietly, looking out the window he so favored.
Nea stuck out her tongue at him. "Now, now you two, we're starting the car already" The gentle voice of your mom came.
"You guys ready?" You energetic-ish dad said as he started up the engine.
"Yes!" you and Nea said in unison. "Hn" Shiro said in monotone. You and Nea looked at him like ¬¬.
The car started and you all rode on to the horizon. You looked behind you at the shrinking form of your house...
~.~.~.~
"Something wrong?" came a voice. Your head snapped and you looked up at Kurama's emerald eyes. Yusuke was also looking at you and Kuwabara slowed the car a little.
You shook your head vigorously and Kuwabara went back to the original speed. You looked away again toward the destination.
Yusuke looked at you seriously (he sat across you) and Kurama looked at you at the corner of his eyes.
-------------------------------------------------------
You began to really sense the demonic presence around. You took the daggers from behind you and casually began to wipe them with a special cloth that was as strong as steel and could be used as something like a sharpener.
Yusuke watched you with interest. "Cool hanky" he said with a grin.
You grinned back (hardly seen through the mask, but they could see it) and passed it to him. He caught it and examined it. "Whoa..." you heard him mutter. He tossed it back to you for you to continue what you were doing, which you did when he did.
Once your daggers were practically flawless, you returned them to their sheaths and pocketed the cloth.
Suddenly, you felt something coming toward the jeep, something gigantic. A quick glance told you the others didn’t notice and you immediately jumped to catch Kurama and Yusuke by their necks with your arms and kicked Kuwabara out with your left foot and all of you were out of the jeep.
You landed in between Kurama and Yusuke on the ground and quickly let them go so you could look behind you. Your eyes widened.
The jeep was floating in midair via reiki. Yusuke and Kurama were standing up and you did after. The jeep was lowered to the ground when the user of the reiki noticed the passengers were no longer in the vehicle.
'Kuso... what the...?'
The reiki disappeared. 'He escaped' you thought to yourself.
Kurama began to inspect the vehicle to see anything that might point to the perpetrator. A gash in the passenger seat caught his eye. 'That's where I was sitting' he thought.
"Are you guys alright?" Kurama turned to face you, Yusuke and the new arrival, Kuwabara.
Yusuke and Kuwabara nodded, stunned. You nodded with your eyes closed.
'It was heading for Kurama' you thought, opening your eyes to look at the kitsune demon. He looked back at you.
"What was that??" Yusuke interrupted, still shocked his mind out. Hiei appeared next to Kurama suddenly.
"An attack" he said simply, looking up at Kurama. Kurama looked back at him and nodded. "I knew it"
"We're almost there" Hiei looked to where you guys were heading. There, you saw the ruins of the once a village already quite in view.
"Let’s walk there, that way, it'd be easier to defend against attacks" Kurama stated solemnly.
You all nodded and walked there.
You managed to get there without any other offenses. Suddenly, everyone became suddenly grim and stopped walking.
"We aren’t there yet" Kurama said quietly.
"Hey guys, we have some company." Yusuke said. Surely enough, there was growling heard from somewhere. You already had your daggers out in position.
The guys had come here so that they could defeat some sort of demon that was most likely a class A demon or something in between class A and S. That would be very difficult since it’s liable that it would bring along friends.
The ones present were only class B, C or even lower. This was very easy. You had your back on the Reikai Tantei so you had to turn to catch their eye. The look you gave them said, leave them to me, I can handle this.
"No way! Do you know how many there are?" Yusuke said. You nodded firmly.
"Let him be, he isn’t called the Demon Slayer for nothing" Hiei said with a smirk. You smirked and nodded again.
"But it’s still a bit risky. We know there are about 4 demons waiting for us there. When someone finishes early, come back to help out here" Kurama looked over to you. "That’s fine right?"
You nodded thankfully.
You were letting them go ahead, not coz you liked to kill demons. But those guys had a job to do.
"Are you sure you can handle that?" Kuwabara looked at you like you were nuts. You raised an eyebrow; the look gave out the very obvious message, DUH.
You let them run on deeper into the ruins and you turned back to face you own opponents.
Your roughly 75 opponents.
