Chapter 15: Short stuff
Chapter 15: Short stuff
Crossing his arms on his chest, Hiei took a small breath. Where to begin? “You know of Makai I imagine?”
Mizu nodded. D.U.H! She was a nymph, she had to have some basic knowledge of all living creatures.
“Then you must know of Koenma, the ruler of Spirit World?”
“I've heard of him,” answered Mizu, unsure of where his questions were going.
“When you were taken, he sent us to Makai to bring the nymphs back,” explained the fire demon, “but they were gone.”
The fairymph blinked, “I was... taken to Makai?”
Hiei could have smacked her. “Hn, of course.” Where else did she think they took her!? Her next door neighbor?
“... Oh,” frowned Mizu, trying to remember how she got there. She couldn't believe she forgot. Diving back in her memories, she remembered the beach incident. Her eyes widened. “They tested me!”
“Nani?” Hiei looked at her, surprised.
Mizu stood up, absorbed in her thoughts and started pacing around the bench. “They could control the weather or something... It was so hot that day! Those bastards, just to find the nymph... Arg!” she let out in frustration. She'd been so easily duped.
“But you're different now,” cut in Hiei, interrupting Mizu's train of thought. The girl looked up, curious.
“How's that?”
Hiei sat on the bench, he was too small to provide her shade now that she was standing. “Koenma called you a fairymph...”
Fairymph... Nope, never heard the term before. “A what?” Now she stood in front of him, her body shielding his piercing crimson eyes from the sun.
“Hn,” scoffed Hiei, he didn't want to repeat himself. “You're not supposed to exist.”
Mizu lifted an eyebrow at that remark. “... Um, sorry? But, hell-o! I'm right here! Standing in front of you!” she pointed at him. Hiei smacked the hand away from him and stood up.
“You're only a myth.” And he disappeared.
Turning around, Mizu's frantically open blue eyes searched the steps of the library for the black shirt that boy wore.
“Mizu?”
The said girl nearly jumped five feet in the air. “Shuichi! Goodness, you startled me!” She then proceeded to roll her eyes while putting a hand on her heart.
Kurama slightly frowned. There was a familiar scent around here. “Why is that? Were you expecting someone else?” he asked curiously, half concerned she was hiding something from him. What a hypocrite, isn't he hiding something from her too? Tsk.
“... Of course not, don't be ridiculous! Now are you going to save my life or what?” she quickly changed the subject.
“I'm not quite sure about your life, but I might be able to save your grade,” smirked Shuichi with an all knowing glint in his mischievous eyes.
Mizu glared at him playfully, “Oh, right. 'Cuz the two aren't tied? Gimme a break! Now c'mon, we're on a tight schedule!” And she grabbed his arm to pull him inside the library to hopefully pass tomorrow's critical test.

“... I'm going to fail...” lamented Mizu, grabbing her head with both hands.
“... I'm going to fail...” lamented Mizu, grabbing her head with both hands.
Shuichi rolled his eyes. “You're such a drama queen. You always do fine, short stuff.”
Mizu turned a slow glare towards him, “What did you call me?” Her eyebrow was twitching slightly.
“Short stuff?” repeated Kurama, suddenly uncertain. Why was she reacting that way? Usually she would ask in a high pitched voice and slap him repeatedly.
Sealing her lips together in a thin line, Mizu pulled her chin up slowly and stared longly. Kurama's eyes darted everywhere. “... Pft-- Hahahahaha!” She burst out laughing and slapped her knee with one hand while the other went to cover her mouth before they were both kicked out for being too loud.
Kurama looked at her, slightly confused and bemused. That only made her laugh more. “Hahaha, you should have seen your face!” whispered Mizu, turning red from laughing, “It was hilarious!!” And she went into a fit of quiet giggles.
“... Huh...” coughed Kurama, staring at the open book. “You're going to fail.” he nodded, hiding his smirk.
“Shuichiiiii!” whined his friend.

After properly thanking her ever smart friend, Mizu rushed home, feeling eyes on her back the entire way. Once in her apartment, she dumped her backpack on the ground, kicked off her shoes and put her keys on the table.
“Alright-- person, come out now.” huffed the blue haired girl. She'd forgotten his name. A short name for a short person.
A black blur disappeared behind her. “Hn. I'm not a person.” growled the familiar voice.
“Whatever, I forgot your name...” she dismissed him with a wave of her hand. “Why are you following me? Have you always been watching me? What happened to me, how is it I can change clothes just thinking about it? And how is it--”
“Shut up!” snapped Hiei. Too many questions.
The blue girl huffed and glared at him, then crossed her arms over her chest before she lifted an eyebrow, as if she was expecting him to answer.
Crimson eyes stared at light blue ones, which held their gaze. “Well? Aren't you going to answer?”
Hiei sighed and rolled his eyes. Stepping back in one quick motion so that his back was in a corner, he lifted his gaze once again. “... Koenma's theory is that you took the power from nymphs all over the world.” He let that sink in.
Mizu's right hand twitched slightly, but Hiei's sharp eyes didn't miss the flickering motion. The girl bit on her bottom lip briefly before letting her tongue run over her slightly dry lips. “... How uh... How does he think I did that?” she asked, as if challenging that theory.
The fire demon simply raised his piercing stare and Mizu looked away, afraid he would be able to read something in her eyes or her face. “He just knows you have all their power. Are you contesting it?”
“How the hell should I know!?” snapped back Mizu, whirling back around to glare at him. “I have no idea what happened to me in that place! They tried to kill me, ok!? They tried... tried... to kill... me...” she finished in a whisper, realization only hitting her now.
Hiei simply stared at her and waited another second before continuing. “You were in a coma when I brought you back.”
Glancing at him from the corner of her eyes, Mizu seemed skeptical and sat down on the sofa. “I don't remember that... I can't remember after--” she licked her dry lips again, “after... the bright light. It was hot... So hot...” she recalled, frowning slightly.
Looking up, Mizu noticed Hiei was gone. Blinking once, she almost stood up when a glass of water almost hit her in the nose. “You need to stay hydrated now. You're a fairymph.” he reminded her.
Mizu blinked once, surprised, yet took the glass, a blank expression her face. “Thank... you...” she finally uttered, her muscles tugging a crooked smile as she put the glass to her lips.
“Hn.” replied the demon hiding in the shadows again. Was he blushing, remembering the taste of those same lips on his? “I have orders to follow you everywhere, so you won't get in trouble again.” he changed the subject.
“Get in trouble? I never get in trouble though, trouble always goes out of its way to find me. You'd only have to ask my parents, if they weren't so damn far away.” mumbled a slightly bitter girl.
“... My job will be easier if you say nothing.”
Mizu rolled her eyes, “Oh please. Who could I tell?” she inquired, looking around. “People would think I'm crazy-- well ok, crazier than usual if I told them some short guy was stalking me.”
Hiei glared at her, oblivious to the fact that Kurama was her best friend. And Kurama was oblivious that Hiei was one of his best friend's body guard. And Mizu was oblivious, like both of the guys, that they knew each other! What a mess...

o_o Wow, I finish two chapters of this story in less than four days!? I'm amazed!!! And I've been stuck on it for the longest time!!!! How does that happen? ... If the writing seems kind of sucky, it might be because I wrote it in such a short period of time... That and I guess random busts of creativity washed over me or something... I hope it was slightly worth it, I do have somewhere to go, but the road going there isn't necessarily painted and straight yet, if you know what I mean...
Anyway, since some sites might or are already down, feel free to check my website for any updates (they'll redirect you to a site but I accept anonymous reviews so put your pen name from where ever). The site is on my profile page, if not, maybe you can google it, I haven't tried that yet. Try: Melie's anime page. That's all, thanks! ^^
missssy: Thanks ^^ I have some ideas, the problem - as always - is how to get there >.>:P Thanks for reviewing!
