Chapter Fourteen: Search, and Battle, and Rescue Part I
Amara was shaken awake by Kiri the next morning. She groggily told Kiri to leave her alone, but she absolutely refused to give up, much to Amara's displeasure.
"I'm up, are you happy now?" Amara asked.
"No; believe me, I'd much rather let you sleep than to make you help me work all day long," Kiri replied.
"Work? Please tell me you don't mean what I think you mean."
"I wish I could. You're supposed to work for Ryushi especially for now."
"What do you mean by that?"
"The usual. You bring and send messages for him. You do whatever he says without talking back. Oh and don't give him the look you usually give him or he'll just hurt you."
"Do I really have to?"
"If I were strong enough I'd kill him so you wouldn't, but I'm not, so yes."
"I'm strong enough!"
Kiri grabbed Amara's face so she would look straight into her eyes.
"Please listen to me Amara. I know that you want revenge. I know that nothing would make you more miserable than to be one Ryushi's slaves. But there's nothing you can do about it. You're strong, but not strong enough, at least not yet. And I could never forgive myself if I let my best friend's daughter get killed when I could have prevented it."
"I understand," she said gloomily.
With that Kiri led Amara through a maze of passageways. She tried to count them but just gave up after a while. Amara wondered how long she'd be here, and she prayed Hiei and the others would come soon.
The detectives had been transported to the outskirts of the forest that surrounded Ryushi's castle. It was a pretty gloomy looking place, but that didn't scare any of them.
"Let's go. We don't know how much time we have so time is of the essence," Hiei told them.
"Hey who made you boss Shorty?" Kuwabara asked.
"I did, so if you want to keep your head from coming off you will listen to me."
Kuwabara shut his mouth after that, even he was wary of Hiei when he was angry. After that they followed Hiei into the forest. There were a lot of low level demons like Koenma said there would be, but that hardly slowed them down.
"Out of my way!" Hiei yelled as he sliced through yet another demon.
"I'm not sure I've ever seen Hiei this mad before," Yusuke whispered to Kurama.
"He's worried, that's all. This won't be easy. We don't know what Ryushi can do, anything could happen," he replied.
"Yeah, but he doesn't have to be so mean," Kuwabara whined.
"Hurry up! Move it or I'm going on ahead without you," Hiei yelled to them.
Kiri had taken Amara to a small room where Ryushi was talking with another demon. They were talking to quietly for her understand what they were saying, but she thought she heard the word assassinate in their conversation.
She and Kiri stood in the doorway for a few minutes. Then Ryushi's guest stood up and left. Ryushi looked up at them for the first time since they had gotten there.
"Good she's here," he said while staring at Amara.
"Yes sir. I brought her to you as you commanded," Kiri told him in a monotone voice that didn't seem to belong to someone like her.
"You may leave and attend to your normal duties."
Kiri turned to leave, but Ryushi continued what he was saying, making her stop.
"Do not tell the other slaves about our new little friend Kiri," he said while staring at Amara, "or there will be consequences."
"Yes sir. As you say," she replied and left, closing the door behind her.
Amara turned to Ryushi. She was so scared that she couldn't even think, or breathe for that matter.
"I assume she's already told you about your mother," he said.
"Yes she did. Why do you care?" She asked in an angry tone.
Ryushi got up so quickly she didn't have time to react. He slapped her across the face, and she fell to the floor stunned.
"Never speak to me like that Girl," he told her coldly, "you belong to me and nothing will change that."
Amara shakily got to her feet. He stared at her for a few moments, almost like he was trying to impress upon her how much he hated her just by using his eyes.
"As for your question," he started, "I don't really care. I just thought you'd like to know about your father as well."
Amara was surprised that he'd even consider telling her this. After all, he despised her, so why tell her something she wanted to know?
"You actually want to tell me something about my family?" She asked him, curiosity taking over her sense of caution.
He laughed softly, and she regretted asking him.
"Are you sure you want to know? You might not be happy with the answer you get."
"Tell me," she said with uncertainty in her voice.
"Your father worked for me, not as a slave like Mai, but as an assassin. He killed many of my enemies, and he only did it for money. He was a heartless killer, and one of the best fighters I've ever met."
Amara stared at him in shock. He had been right; she would rather have not known that her father had been a murderer.
"You're lying," she accused in a whisper.
"I said you might not like the answer. Now you know."
Just then a slave burst through the door. He had a look of pure terror on his face.
"Lord Ryushi, there are intruders in the castle!" He said in a shaky voice.
Amara smiled and stood up. "My friends are here, and they won't leave until you're dead," she told him with confidence in her voice.
"You shouldn't be so sure of yourself. It will only make it worse when you see them die," he told her.
"You," he said while pointing to the slave, "make sure she doesn't leave, and get her something to eat. She's probably starving by now."
With that Ryushi left the room, leaving the two standing there, watching each other.
Amara suddenly realized how hungry she was. It had been a while since she had last eaten.
"I'll go get you some food," he told her.
"What's your name?"
He hesitated before answering. "My name is Tochaa."
With that Tochaa left the room and locked the door behind him. Amara tried to break it down, but that didn't work. She even tried using fire balls to melt the door down, but she guessed it was fire proof or something.
Tochaa came back a little while later with what looked like a bowl of soup.
"Eat," he told her.
Amara was too hungry to care that he was telling her what to do. She ate the soup with Tochaa watching her the whole time.
When she was done she felt strange. Amara felt weaker than she did before. Her eyes widened as she realized why.
"It was poisoned," she said as she fell to the floor.
"Sorry, I'm only following orders. You'll be happy to know it won't kill you. You just won't be able to move for a while."
Amara tried to get up, but her body just wouldn't listen to her no matter how much she wanted it too. Her surroundings became blurry and she finally fell into unconsciousness.
Hiei and the others had finally found and broken into Ryushi's castle.
"Where are you Ryushi?! Show yourself now, or I'll demolish the entire castle!" Hiei yelled.
They suddenly heard his mocking laughter echo throughout the room.
"You needn't do something so rash Hiei. I'm here and ready to kill you all," he said, stepping out of the shadows.
Hiei drew his sword and got into an attack position.
"Who says it's going to be us that die today?”
