Chapter Two: Ultimate Realization
Kai felt the presence of three people following her. They were gaining on her and she was afraid that she would be taken back without getting to find this Youko Kurama. Her mother's locket was leading her in the right direction; she could just feel the energy searching for the man. Kai wanted to keep moving forward, but she knew that she couldn't do it with the three people tailing her. Quickly, she thought of several ways to fix the situation. Her mind shut down for a moment, slowly building itself back up. Her body moved without her, winding in between the trees and bushes, hiding in the foliage. This was her territory; her mother had always told Kai that she had a special gift. Kai had never tried to use the gift before, only to give her mother presents every now and then. The trees hid Kai from the rain that was pouring down from the sky. The scent was thick and it was fresh. The people gained on her and Kai could feel their energies on her back.
`One youkai, two spiritual humans.' Kai told herself. She felt her body reach out for anything, for some signal of a plant that could help her. Then she felt it, slowly. It was faltering at the edge of the forest on the other side. She knew it was her only hope, her only possible way to get out of this.
“Transfer Plant!” She whispered into the night. Her mind focused on the plant as her eyes did all the seeing. Kai's body split its energy in two, the larger half going to the plant at the edge of the forest, and the rest to maintain the running. Her mind declared that her body had processed the request, and her heart slowed down as her body entered a black out period. Her mind did the rest of the work, sensing the three people switch to stalking the other plant. She did it, her gift hadn't failed her. Kai sensed the clearing up ahead, and when she broke into it, the rain pelted her with its cold, harsh drops. Kai stumbled a bit towards the lightly glowing temple. This was it. This was where Youko Kurama was; Kai felt the locket in her hand grow hot. The locket hadn't failed, Kai's gift hadn't failed; and for once, neither had Kai.
“Youko….Kurama….” Kai said out loud before her energy hit zero and her mind entered its own black out phase. She fell to her knees before she saw a figure with red hair running towards her.
`I didn't fail you mother… I killed you, but I didn't fail you…'

Kurama scooped the girl up in his arms and ran back into the temple. He had sensed her energy the moment she hit the clearing. The smell of blood was sweet on her skin. Youko had gone crazy when he had sensed the blood; there was a familiar smell to it. Kurama turned on the light to his bedroom and set the girl down on his futon. She was freezing and unconscious. Kurama looked at the girl and he knew. Youko knew. They both saw her and had no doubt about it; that was his daughter.

Yusuke stomped on the plant and sighed, soaking wet and tired. Hiei looked around, confused. He had clearly sensed her energy break away and start over. There was no way that the girl could have tricked him. His Jagan was perfect, never to be deceived.
“Damnit!” Yusuke said. He was tired and he just wanted to sleep. Kuwabara was asleep on his feet again, not bothering to care about getting sick. Yusuke punched him and Kuwabara fell backwards, but woke up.
“Let's go. We've already lost her.” Yusuke said to his team mates. They were too close to the temple for the kitsune not to have made it there.
`Too bad Koenma, looks like she's going to win.'

The Tantei walked into the temple to find a fully transformed Youko Kurama pacing in the front room. Hiei stopped before he even entered the temple. There was something wrong.
“I have a daughter. I, the infamous Youko Kurama, have a daughter. And she looks a good deal like me. MY daughter. Mine…” Youko's deep voice was full of distress. Yusuke sighed and dropped his dripping jacket on the floor of the temple. It was too early to think about what was going through the youkai's head.
“Shut up and go to bed.” Yusuke said as he walked past the kitsune. Youko didn't even acknowledge the boy's comment. Hiei rolled his eyes and finally walked into the temple. Youko looked at his fighting partner.
“What the hell do I do?” He asked the fire youkai. Hiei's eyes were wide.
“How would I know?!” Hiei said defensively. Youko paced back and forth. Hiei shook his hair and let the rain fall off of the ends. It was wet outside, and all he craved was a warm bed.
“Will you go look at her?” Youko asked. Hiei shrugged. He was tired, angry that the girl had evaded him. But he would like to confirm that she was like her father; at least looks wise. The picture said so, but he wouldn't stand for just that. Hiei walked down the hall, to where Kurama's room was. Youko followed him nervously. The door creaked open softly as Hiei looked in at the sleeping kitsune. Her silver hair was glowing in the moonlight. He felt his heart jump when he saw the soft contour of her face, the way it looked so young and soft.
“She does look like me right?!” Youko asked. Hiei growled at the nervous kitsune. Youko's normal manner would have been more appreciated by the Jaganshi at that point. A nervous Youko Kurama was an unpredictable one.
“Yes. She does.” Hiei said. He let himself sneak in the room and wander towards her bed. The girl's body was still slightly wet from a sloppy drying job. It seemed that Youko didn't want to be too rough when drying her off. Hiei rolled his eyes; the kitsune was going to get his kid sick.
“Go, get Kurama.” Hiei demanded of the fox. Youko looked oddly at Hiei, but the Jaganshi reached over for the towel and started to blot the water droplets off the girl. Her energy was low, and her body was in a deep sleep. Youko left the room, and Hiei could sense the change in energy from Youko to Kurama.
“Your father will be useless to you.” Hiei told the girl while she was semi-unconscious. Her body was tucked softly under the light covers, and she seemed to be at peace. That was when Hiei noticed the scent of blood coming from the girl. It wasn't her own, but Hiei could smell it all over her. He pulled back the covers and found that her attire was covered in blood and her hands were too. Quickly, he took the towel and cleaned her hands. Her clothes were something that Hiei would not touch. That was not his job to change the kitsune's daughter.
“Here, let me help…” Kurama said as he pulled out an extra set of pajamas. Hiei was thankful that he wasn't going to have to subject himself to taking off the girl's clothes. The red-head had an air of calm about him, like he had some how managed to stuff the paranoid youkai back into his place in just a few seconds. The change always amazed Hiei.
“There… better.” Kurama said as Hiei turned around. He felt it was necessary to give the girl some decent privacy. Hiei watched as Kurama pushed the girl's hair back. The bangs were cut at a perfectly straight angle above her eyes, and the rest of it was just a solid one length. Kurama touched the girl's fox ear and felt the softness of the fur. He hadn't even thought about her tails. Carefully, he lifted the covers and discovered that her two tails were doing just fine. She was young, very young. Kurama estimated that Youko had met his fate soon after she was born.
“Do you remember her, fox?” Hiei asked. Kurama shook his head without looking at the Jaganshi. He didn't remember her at all. But the blood on her. He knew that blood. The sweet intoxicating smell of a lover's blood. The name and face came floating to surface and Kurama could feel Youko's thoughts going crazy.
“She and Youko have never met. But he remembers her mother.” Kurama said softly. The feelings were intense, even though the fox was trying to hold them all in. Kurama could still feel the lust for the woman and the fear for the child in front of him. Though the girl was not possibly that much younger than Kurama himself.
“Koenma ordered us to bring her straight to him. We were tracking her.” Hiei admitted. Kurama looked at Hiei with a pain on his face. He was never meant to see his daughter. Kurama knew why though; it now changed every priority in Youko's life, which dominated Kurama's life. It changed the Tantei the moment that the girl had appeared over the Makai border.
“I'm happy she made it.” Kurama said. He knew Youko was freaking out, but as Kurama, it was nice to see the other parts to his life before. The girl was beautiful; she had a look of depth and calculation to her that Kurama found irresistible. There was no passion for her, but he knew he would enjoy her company. She was after all, going to be a part of his life from now on.
“Let's hope Koenma feels the same.”
