Chapter Three: Daddy's Roses

Kai slowly opened her eyes in the dark room. It was night and she was not at home. The kitsune shook her hair out and yawned, trying to remember where she was and why she wasn't with her mother.

“Oh GOD, Mom….” Kai felt her chest tighten, and then her insides squeezed her until she started to cry. The realization of what happened was now hitting her and she didn't know what she was doing. Her sobs grew louder and soon, Kai pulled her knees to her chest and rocked herself, trying to soothe the pain that was shooting through out her entire body.

“Oh god… oh god…. Mom! Mom!” Kai cried out. She tucked her head into the niche of her knees and chest. The door flung open and in came Kurama, scared that Youko's daughter was dying.

“What's wrong?! Kai, are you alright?!” Kurama asked, worried about the kitsune in front of him. He threw his arms around her and held her as she sobbed. Kai didn't know why the red headed human knew her name or was trying to comfort her, but it felt good to have someone there, even if she didn't deserve it.

“Mom, she's…. she's gone! I'm so sorry mom! I'm sorry!” Kai cried louder and louder and Kurama could feel Youko's heart breaking.

`Oh god, what do I do?! Mai is dead? No wonder she came to find me!' Youko thought.

`She has no where else to go! How can we let Koenma take her? You're her father! She's your responsibility!' Kurama mentioned.

`It isn't like I knew she existed!' Youko defended himself.

“I killed her. I killed her! Mom, I'm so sorry! Oh god!” Kai kept shaking as the tears fell. A black shadow entered the room and with a quick touch, the shadow quieted the kitsune's cries. Kurama felt Kai go limp against his chest as Hiei looked into her mind with his Jagan eye. Hiei struggled to keep the mental picture of what happened. He could see Mai, the mother, getting caught in the trap after pushing Kai out of the way. The girl was not at fault. She was blaming herself. Hiei could see and feel the blood on Kai's hands and clothes. It was warm and he could feel the sadness and fault that the kitsune was holding on to. Finally, he let go of her and closed his Jagan.

“Ugh.” Hiei said as he slowly and tiredly wrapped his bandana around his now shut Jagan. Kurama laid Kai back down on the bed and tucked her in. The Jaganshi looked disturbed at what he saw.

“Hiei, what's going on?” Kurama asked. Youko was in a frenzy. He didn't want to believe that his daughter was a killer. Not of her mother. Not Mai.

“The mother pushed her out of the way of a trap. The girl had to leave the mother and then there was a gun shot. She's gone. The girl blames herself.” Hiei struggled to say to his fighting partner.

“Oh god…” Kurama whispered to himself. He stared at the young kitsune. She was searching for him because Mai died, and she blamed herself for it. Kurama knew that it was not something that he could just fix. A knock on the door interrupted the two from talking. Both walked to it and stepped outside, where an angry Koenma was.

“Damnit Hiei! I told you and the two detectives to stop this before it happened!” Koenma cursed. Kurama looked at him angrily.

“That's...my…she's mine! Don't you think I have the right to know her?!” Kurama said after trying to figure out how to properly say that the girl kitsune in the bedroom was really his daughter. He didn't want Koenma to take her away. It wasn't fair! Kai was his! Well, she was Youko's, but Kurama felt a strong attachment to her already. There was no denying that she was his, and he didn't want to waste any time.

“She will ruin the Tante! You know this Kurama! Think logically!” Koenma pleaded with the kitsune. Kurama growled at the prince. Koenma glared at him.

“She's mine. She's not going anywhere. Don't even try it!” Kurama said and walked away. Koenma sighed and looked at Hiei.

“What went wrong?!” The toddler asked Hiei. Hiei just looked back at him. There was more to this than Koenma wanted to admit. Hiei knew that something was missing from all the information that had been given to him.

“Her energy went a different way than she did.” Hiei told Koenma. Koenma tensed up and then calmed down.

“Then it's already starting. I suppose I can't do anything than.” Koenma spoke softly, as if he was filling in gaps to himself. Hiei eyed him suspiciously.

“Hnn.” Hiei replied. Koenma walked away and Hiei looked back at the door to the bedroom. He slipped in quickly to make sure that the kitsune was alive and still laying down. She was still and Hiei immediately worried that she had died. He rushed to her and laid his ear by her mouth and nose. The warm breath hit the side of his face and he relaxed.

“Hnn.” Hiei said. He looked the kitsune over again. Her face was a generally normal one, nothing too attractive or repulsive about it. Her silver hair was obviously from Youko's genes. Hiei reminded himself of something he had seen earlier. Kai had bright blue eyes, obviously not from Youko's genes. She was slender and not too tall, probably another trait she inherited from her mother. Hiei watched the girl sleep and tried to piece together a picture of what Kurama's lover must have looked like. It was very hard to do. Hiei barely noticed when Kai stirred and opened her eyes.

“Hnn. Awake. Finally.” Hiei said. Kai sat up and looked at the boy with spiky black hair and crimson eyes. She could clearly see him in the dark.

“Are you Youko Kurama?” Kai asked the boy. She wondered why her mother would send her to such a puny boy.

“No. He's in the other room.” Hiei said. He tried not to laugh. There was no way in all 7 hells that he was the Makai Thief.

“I need to see him! My mom sent me to him! I need to-” Kai struggled to get off the bed, and ended up falling down. Her body was so confused that it didn't know what to do. Hiei helped her up and put her back on the bed. She began to speak again, but Hiei put his finger on her lips.

“Stop. He knows.” Hiei replied. Kai nodded her head and looked at her hand, which was no longer clutching the silver necklace. She looked around the bed nervously, searching for that necklace.

“Where is my necklace!?!? Where is it?!” She demanded of Hiei. Hiei looked at her and glared. Kai shut up and felt embarrassed. She was demanding things of the boy and she didn't say please or even ask his name. Her mother wouldn't approve. The thought of her mother sent ripples down her spine and she could feel the guilt swarm back up and her. Hiei recognized the look in her eyes and shook his head.

“You didn't do it. Stop blaming yourself. And your necklace is on the dresser.” Hiei said matter of fact. Kai thanked the boy with a nod of her head.

“Uhm… If you aren't Youko Kurama…. Who are you?” She asked kindly. Hiei's eyes bulged and he wasn't sure what to say.

“Hnn. Hiei. My name is Hiei.” Kai nodded and looked at her hands.

“Thank you Hiei, for taking such good care of me.” Kai managed to choke out. Hiei could feel the pressure against the girl's chest from her lungs trying to hold in all the pain that was choking her. He couldn't do anything, so he decided her should just leave her be. Surely, Kurama would be able to do something.

{Kurama, she's awake} Hiei thought.

{Thank you. Coming right now.} Kurama replied.

Moments later, Youko Kurama opened the door and walked in. Kai looked up and saw the large kitsune walk up to her. The surprise in her was only doubled by the fact that she now understood why her mother had told her to find him. HE was her FATHER. The kitsune was tall and had long silver hair. He had the same set eyes, but a totally different color. Kai's mouth opened. Her mother had known where her father was the whole time.

“Youko Kurama?” Kai asked. The kitsune nodded. Hiei looked at the two and noted the appearances were similar, especially their facial expressions.

“I'm… well…I am…” Youko tried to get to the point, but realized he didn't have to say a word when Kai jumped off the bed and ran to him, throwing her arms around the youkai's waist. Kai clung on to him tightly, letting the tears slide out of her eyes.

“My father. You are my father.” Kai whispered. Hiei felt a sense of awkwardness at witnessing the embrace of father and child. He quickly left the room. Youko looked down at the girl and let his hands wrap around her and feel the texture of her hair and the warmth of her skin.

{My daughter's skin…} He thought.

“Why? Why didn't mom tell me you were still alive!?” Kai demanded. Youko turned his eyes to Kai. He shook his head.

“I was almost killed shortly before your birth, and I came to the Ningenkai to regain my strength. I never knew you existed. Mai must have honestly thought I was dead…” Youko tried to tell himself. His sense of emotion seemed to expand greatly with just learning that he had fathered an unknown child.

“She knew you were alive. She sent me to find you! She knew you were in the Ningenkai! But… how?” Kai asked. Youko thought about it, and didn't like the answers his mind came with. He shook them off.

“We will discover that later. I need to know you. Tell me.” Youko demanded. Kai looked at her father with wonder. She had never pictured that she would meet him. In truth, she was raised to believe that he had wandered off and was killed by hunters. It was partially where her fears came from.

“My name is Kaiyo. The K and yo is from your name and the ai is from mom's. I live on the outskirts of the kitsune clan. They… well, they never liked me.” Kai admitted. Though she now understood why. The entire clan had known she was Youko's child. It was obvious by more than looks. Kai physically looked and acted like her father. Their stances were the same, slightly annoying Youko and Kai. It seemed that their temperaments were slightly opposite, but Kai was sure that she had at least one of her father's personality traits.

“They knew then. Hmm.” Youko thought that information over. He hadn't been a huge fan of the kitsune clan, but Mai was their resident healer, and he had fallen madly in love with her.

“Did your mother pass on any of her abilities to you? Did I!?” Youko found himself asking strange questions. He wanted to know if his daughter was a healer or could manipulate plants like himself. It was strange to be face to face with his child and not see her grow from the beginning. A slight ache forced Youko to think that he had never once held the girl in his arms until this night.

“I've tried to heal like my mother, but it doesn't look like I can really do it. I don't really know what you can do. Obviously my mother never spoke of you.” Kai told the kitsune. Youko rolled his eyes.

“I should have remembered. I am a master manipulator of plants.” Youko beamed. He had never been able to introduce himself before. Kai lit up.

“I can work with plants! I can do that! Well, I've only sort of used it. But I know I can make roses! My mom's favorites are red roses!” Kai smiled. Youko felt like he was delivered the most powerful punch to the stomach he had ever experienced. Mai still loved his roses, and his daughter was the one to give them to her. The pain that she was actually gone was hitting him. He turned from Kai quickly and attempted to gather himself.

“I'm sorry. I… I didn't do something bad did I?” Kai asked. Youko shook his head. He reached into his hair and pulled out a rose seed. He brought it back to his front and let it grow. When he turned around, he held out the rose to Kai. She looked at Youko and then at the rose.

“My mom loved YOUR roses…” Kai spoke softly. She could sense that there was actual pain in the kitsune's eyes.

`So he really did love my mother…' Kai reminded herself.
