Chapter Five: How To Bloom

Kai waited in the kitchen for a few hours before her father was awake again. She walked back into his room and noticed that he hadn't changed back into his youkai form.

“I'm sorry Kai, I just… It's really difficult to keep Youko in line.” Kurama sighed. He hated having to listen to all of Youko's conversations and to censor what would be appropriate for his daughter to her. Youko was pleasant about it and thankful, but he was still a pain to deal with when he was all excited.

“Oh, it's alright. I would like to get to know you too. If you don't mind?” Kai asked the human who held her father's body. Kurama looked at her and smiled. She was truly sweet.

“That would be really great.” Kurama responded. Kai and Kurama slowly went outside, leaving a certain Koorime to watch as the red head and the kitsune's daughter went off to the forest together. Hiei eyes the girl kitsune with suspicion. He hoped that Kurama was keeping his mouth shut. There was nothing that he wanted the girl to know.

Nothing.

Kai and Kurama wandered around the forest in the back of the temple. Kai enjoyed running around while Kurama just waited for her patiently in one of the trees. Finally, when Kai had enough of her exercise, she came back and sat next to Kurama.

“So, Youko reminded that you have a bit of his power? That you can manipulate plants?” Kurama said. Kai nodded. She didn't look too enthusiastic about it though.

“I'm not very good at it. Honestly, it is really hard to control.” Kai retorted. Kurama nodded.

“It takes some time to get used to it. Look…” Kurama held a seed in his hand and let his energy flow into it. Slowly Kai could see the seed move and then start to grow. It was amazing to watch the simplest, smallest seed transform into a single flower; an iris. It was Kai's favorite flower too.

“How… how did you do that?” Kai asked. Kurama smiled and enjoyed the kitsune's company. She wasn't amazed by Youko, or afraid of him. She was loving and sweet, and didn't really seem to be too impressed with anything expect things that were normal for the Tante.

“Think of being the earth and the water for the flower. You need to be the nutrients to the flower to get it to grow. Make your energy flow into the seed and then see what happens.” Kurama placed a seed in Kai's hand. Kai looked at the red head and tried to remember that the boy she was with was really the host to her father. The seed felt warm in her hand the moment she concentrated. The roots wrapped around her hand and the seed took off into a beautiful bloom of mums. Kai smiled and Kurama could see a small sliver of joy in the beautiful blue eyes.

“Wow! Kurama! I did it!” Kai cried out happily. Kurama nodded and helped pry the plant off Kai's arm. Kai sighed and smelled the flowers patiently.

“Mom always said that flowers were the second most beautiful thing in this life…” Kai said. Kurama looked at her puzzled.

“What is the first?” He asked.

“Love.” Kai responded.
