Chapter 6
. . . . And then silence
Heralds' beasts were more then keeping their own with the three meddlers. He wanted very much to watch the outcome, but he had more important things to do. He scanned the room and saw the large glass case that was against the wall and amazingly still in tacked. The only problem he had now was how to get there. Trying to get it now would take him to close to the battle.
However the fire his lions had caused was starting to spread and if he didn't act soon the whole building would fall. He started to rack his brain for any incantations that would help him, when he remembered something.
`Only three of them are fighting the lions, aren't there four of them?' This thought had barely finished when Herald received a light tap on his shoulder. His grip instinctively tightens on the Sphere as he slowing turned around and stared up at the smirking face of Yusuke Urameshi.
"Looking for me?"
Heralds' grip tightened on the sphere as he carefully retreated backwards. A trickle of sweat slithered down his spine, making his whole body shiver with fear. He pounded his brain for a plan, but his fear made his thoughts all jumbled and incomplete.
"I'll make you deal four-eyes." Yusuke said, closing the distance between then. "If you give up now and do a little begging, then maybe I'll only break on of your legs."
Herald gathered up his courage and gave a demented laugh. "You can't order me around muscle brain. My power is beyond any . . . "
"Oh blah blah blah, so you stole a magic disco ball from some dead God-chick. You're still just another whinny little nerd who couldn't take his licks when he was a kid. Now hand it over or I'm gonna pound you like the little bug you are! "
The words rang in Herald's head as his anger reached its threshold. He chanted the words to call upon the most horrible of spells. A crazy smile spreading across his face as the Sphere's power curled around his body like a snake. He was halfway through the chant but his concentration was broken by a loud bang, he turned his head for just a second but it was enough.

Yusuke's skin broke out in goose bumps as the energy of the spell surrounded him. He didn't know what was happening but he bet it wasn't good. He spread his feet apart centering his weight as he readied his Spirit Gun. There was an explosion to his right and he watched as his target turned his head in surprise. Seeing his chance, he fired without hesitation.
The shockwave from the other explosion knocked him to the ground before he could see if his shot hit the mark. He waited for the sound of the impact, but it never came, just a long painful scream. The floor shook beneath him and something large and heavy crashed to the ground . . . and then silence.

Kuwabara was leaning on his knees panting, trying to think what to do next. Every time he got close enough to do something that stupid lion would set his cloths on fire. He already lost his jacket, shirt, and half of a pant leg. If he didn't think of something quick, he would soon be naked.
Hiei and Kurama weren't that much better off. Hiei's sword was pretty much useless sense the lions could reform themselves, and if he used anything bigger inside the building he would risk the chance of killing them all. Kurama's Rose whip was just as (if not more) ineffective then Hiei's weapon. Though not nearly as flimsy as Kuwabara's cloths, too much contact with the beast would set it ablaze.
Kuwabara coughed as smoke filled his lungs and burned his eyes. Whatever he did he needed to do it soon. He gave a small chuckle as smoke and fire reminded him of . . . `That's it!' He thought to himself as he turned to stare at the two lions.
`If Hiei and Kurama could get them in the right spot, it could work.' He watched as Kurama started to back the lion he was fighting into a corner. This was his chance, but it was now or never.
"Kurama, keep it there as long as you can." He shouted. "Hiei get that lion as close to the other as you can."
"What are you babbling about this time?" He yelled as he dodged one of the lions' claws.
"No time to explain just hurry up and do it!"
Hiei hesitated at first, and although against his better judgment, did as Kuwabara asked. With a quick slice, he severed the lions' head and dashed off toward Kurama. As soon as its head reformed it sprinted after him, snarling and spitting sparks.
Hiei took a few moments to dash around the lion, making it as angry and confused as possible. He stopped a few feet from the corner where Kurama was, just as he predicted the lion pounced. Waiting till the last second Hiei jumped out of the way, telling Kurama to do the same.
Hiei's lion tried to stop when it realized that its prey was not where it was supposed to be. However, the slick floor sent it skidding toward the wall. The other lion jumped back to avoid the first one and bumped into the wall, setting it on fire.
As soon as Hiei and Kurama where out of the way Kuwabara summoned his Spirt Sword and raced foreword with every ounce of his strength. He thrust the sword into the first lion while giving it the command to grow longer. Both lions screamed as the sword tore through their bodies and became embedded into the burning wall behind them.
Kuwabara let out a sigh of relief as the lions clawed and wiggled, trying to release themselves from his sword. Kuwabara dropped to his knees in exhaustion, using the last of his strength to keep the sword in place.
"Not bad Kuwabara, crude but effective." Kurama said coming to stand beside him, followed by Hiei.
"Hn, I guess there is a brain in that thick scull of his."
"Shut up pip squeak, I'd like to see you do better!"
"So now what? Kurama interjected as he looked up, watching the flames spread to the ceiling. "The fire is weakening the wall as we speak, it will not hold for long."
"Well, I guess . . . um mm . . . Actually I did really think that far ahead." Kuwabara said sheepishly.
"Figures." Hiei said with his usual sarcastic tone.
Before Kuwabara could respond the temperature in the room dropped so suddenly that frost began to form on the floor and walls. Kuwabara got to his feet just in time to see a large spear-like thing go flying passed him, immediately followed by a second one. They hit the two trapped lions, who gave a loud scream before exploding into a huge cloud of steam.
The force of the blast shoved them all to the floor, scalding steam burning their faces. Dust and rubble came down on them like hail as the building gave a violent shake. There was a high-pitched scream that was cut short by a loud crash . . . and then silence.

Kida stared up at this new threat, his blue eyes completely blank, giving no hint to his intentions. Several thoughts on how to deal with this particular situation came into her head, but none seemed very plausible. She knew what he was, his demonic power surrounded her like a blanket of insects. However, she felt drastically unprepared for this. The Lady had failed to mention that she would have to go up against demons.
They stared at each other, neither making a single move. Kida's mouth went dry and she could feel little trickles of sweat running down her back. She didn't have time for this, she needed to get the sphere and get the hell out of here. The demon suddenly gave a small smile and without showing one ounce of strain, picked her up by her shirt. He brought her face level with his and he stared at her, seeming to study her features.
"Now what would you be doing up here?" He said in a rather cheerful tone.
Kida said, trying for the most innocent look she could muster. "Sight seeing."
Every fiber in her being was telling her to attack, but she had to wait for the right moment. She would only have one chance at this and she couldn't afford to waste it. She gathered minute portions of her power into her closed fist, sliding it slightly behind her so he couldn't see.
She could feel the energy of the sphere growing with each second, if she didn't get down there soon the situation would be more than she could handle. A shiver went up her spine as the demons face suddenly hardened and he brought her within an inch of his face.
"It's not nice to lie."
"Well, I would tell you, but the thing is . . . I gotta go."
Closing her eyes she brought her hand as close to his face as she dared and opened it as a single word escaped her lips in the tiniest whisper.
`Tap'ardith'
Even with her eyes closed she could feel the blinding light that exploded from her hand. The demon let out a yell just before she hit the ground. Before she even realized she did it, her leg swung out, catching his legs and sending him crashing down next to her. She sprang forward to attacked, refusing to give him time to recover. All she needed was one good hit to stall him enough to get down to the main floor.
She could feel the warmth of her power building up again, muscle and bone shifted underneath her skin as she started the change. The pain was fierce, but nothing more then a buzz in the back of her mind. She swung her left arm back just as five sharp claws formed at the tip of her fingers. She brought them down, aiming for his heart.
Without warning the building suddenly shook and Kida almost lost her balance. She managed to compensate but that brief second cost her dearly. Her cheek erupted in pain as she was hit across the face, the force of the blow sending her backwards.
Everything around her started to spin, she closed her eyes as her stomach gave a lurch. She had a vague sense of being moved but was too busy trying to keep from throwing up. ( or passing out, whichever came first) As Kida's mind began to clear she realized she was now on her belly, her hands trapped behind her in an iron grip.
"Whoo, you're a fast one, a few more seconds and I'd been a goner." The demon said in an unexpectedly pleasant voice. "Now, let's start over, what'cha doing up here?"
Kida of course had no plans to tell him anything, for one thing he was laughing at her, and even if she wanted to tell him, what was she going to say? `Oh I'm the delivery girl for an Egyptian god, here to stop one of her inventions from destroying the universe.'
It didn't really matter one way or the other because before she could open her mouth there was a loud cracking sound as a section of the roof ( the section they happened to be occupying) collapsed. They were both enveloped in a cloud of dust as they went plummeting down to the ground. A sharp pain exploded at the back of Kida's head . . . and then silence
