"So Pardon me while I burst into flames.
I've had enough of the world, and its people's mindless games
So Pardon me while I burn, and rise above the flame
Pardon me, pardon me. I'll never be the same."

"So it's settled then. Your going to leave." Kurama said, his voice dripped with sadness. "I swear, I'd go with you if I could, but you know I can't leave her alone."

Hiei nodded, he knew before he'd asked. He knew there was no way it could have worked out like he'd wanted. Deep inside he cried at the thoughts of being separated from his best friend, on the outside however he could only frown lightly look away from the green eyes he stared into so many times before.

"I know. I'll wait for you, no matter how long it takes. I'll be waiting... you'll always be welcome." He said lightly.

Kurama was about to reply when there was a knock at the door, "Shuichi, dinner's almost ready but I haven't heard the shower yet." A gentle, airy voice spoke.

The red head made the mistake of turning away from the raven haired demon to reply, "I know, Mom. I just had a call that needed to be made. I'm getting ready for my shower now."

He turned back to continue the conversation, to trying to make the other stay, only to find he had left when he wasn't looking. He rushed to the window, even though he knew full well that there would be no way that he'd see the other man.

"So that's how it's going to be." He whispered to the emptiness.

It was then that he made a decision, he was going to be sure to see Hiei away. So he changed from his work clothes into something a bit more casual and comfortable. After a quick check of seeds, by force of habit and need to be prepared he always kept them on him, he made his way to the kitchen. His mother was setting the table.

"Mother, I'm very sorry but I have a crucial client that just got into the airport. He wasn't due in till tomorrow so there isn't a car ready for him and I'm the closest to the airport so I need to pick him up and settle him into his hotel." He said with a smile.

His mother looked a bit disappointed but she knew that he was proud of his job and she depended on that job to survive since she could not work. His income, along with his step-father's kept the bills paid. So she nodded and told him there would be a plate waiting when he got home.

The kitsune drove the car to the park, he knew there was a portal there. He searched but could not find the fire demon's energy signal. It was getting late and he wondered if he'd missed his departure. Just as he was about to return home he caught a vague wisp of the energy he had been searching for.

Quickly he took off in pursuit and ended up halfway across town and into the forest where the two had committed their last crime. It was the place where the first member of the trio had been caught. Quickly he took refugee in the trees around the area. He watched the cloaked figure approach the open field. It took only a few moments for the portal to react to his energy signature and appeared.

He watched as the other stared at the portal that linked the two worlds. It seemed almost like he didn't want to leave. It was a big decision after all. Where the portals in the human world stayed in place, making the Reikai Tantei's job simpler, they would switch areas in the Youkai, making it harder to cross back. Essentially, if you left it would be a permanent move. The only people able to easily find the portals in the Youkai were Enma and the Demon Kings of the Youkai, and perhaps high S-Class demons. But most of them were taken out by the Kings for fear of a take over.

However, the kitsune was getting ahead of himself. He was an average S-Class Demon and he could easily be recruited by either of the Kings and could live in luxury and fill his need to fight. He only hoped that Hiei would find the happiness he was looking for.

"Goodbye... Hiryuu. Till the next time we meet." He said softly as he watched him walk through the portal.

Just before the portal disappeared he was sure he'd heard Hiei's voice one last time, "I'll wait forever if I have to... Kitsune."

The red head shook it off and slowly made his way back to his car. So that was the end of it, this was how his one true friendship ended. He had no one to fall to any longer. Yuusuke and Kazuma had gone on their own way, Kazuma didn't live in town anymore, he'd moved into Genkai's old temple and was teaching people the finer points of Reiki. And it was almost as if Yuusuke had moved out as well, with how often he was gone on Reikai Tantei missions. Now he was left with his job and his mother, it was the only thing that meant anything to him anymore.

He wondered how long it would be till he'd see the fire demon again, if he'd ever see him again. After all, no matter how powerful a demon you are there is no guarantee for safety in the Youkai. He just hoped that his friend would be alright. he didn't want to lose him any more then he already had.

He began to wonder just how long he would be able to hold out. He'd gotten use to being able to have a vent for his emotions and his secrets. He wondered if he could go back to the way he was, relying only on himself and protecting himself and his family from anyone who threatened them. Not that there was any type of threat that he needed to deal with but he knew he still had enemies out there and he was sure it was only a matter of time before he was once again found.

It was a lot to take in but he could handle it, or at least Yoko could. He was thankful for that part of himself. There was always the option of reverting to his original demon form at any time. Even though he was still part of him Yoko was different then he was. He was a demon not a human and he could easily block the emotions that he didn't want to feel.

Kurama was sitting behind the wheel of his car now. It was time for him to return to the life he had built here. It was time for him to use that strength he'd acquired for all those years. It was time for him to go to his home. Time for him to have dinner and spend the evening with the people who believed they were his son and brother. For him it was time to join the small family that gave him love and hope. It was time for him to try to heal, at least a little bit at a time.

He took a breath and buried his sadness and once again had a calm exterior. But inside it burned, inside he was being torn apart.
