Hiei & Me

Ch. 1:Meeting Hiei

"5:30! Time for Yu-Yu Hakusho!",I said to myself, but actually I spoke it aloud

I flipped through the guide channels muttering to myself, asking my mind where to find it, though I knew. Then I saw the title of today's episode: "Dragon of The Darkness Flame." I smiled secretly and turned out my lamp, leaving myself in complete darkness.

"Oh, yeah! This is gonna be swweet!", I whispered. Then Hiei, one of my fave Yu Yu characters, appeared on screen. I copied his voice exactly, knowing just where to fit line after line of Hiei's smooth, cool and somewhat flat, yet cocky statements.

Hiei and I are very alike, though I must admit I hide it well. I'm cocky, cool, smart and smooth, yet I mask it with a kind, sweet exterior. It's just the way I am. I guess he and I have a lot in common. Then my voice developed a dark edge as I matched Hiei word for word, line for line. Suddenly my mom called me out to dinner. I frowned, but the show was over, so I got into my wheelchair and came to the living room.

"Dinner's ready, Erin!", mom called out, thinking I was still in my room.

"Hn. I know.", was my only reply. Inside my mind a surprising thought came:

What the... I'm starting to sound like Hiei! I hear a dark edge to my voice now...What the heck is going on here...? Maybe I've been watching a little too much Yu-Yu Hakusho lately! My mom just stared at me strangely, like 'What tree did you fall out of?' I frowned quickly to express my displeasure, but she kicked in, thinking something was wrong. See, I'm not usually like this around my mom, and this was the first time she'd seen me like this. So she decided to tease me a little; her way of "snapping me out of it," because she thought I was angry. She reached to tickle me, but I instinctively pushed her away. She got upset; just a little sad. She knew I noticed and then:

"What's wrong?", she asked. I couldn't help it. I just felt on edge.

"Hn. Nothing. I'm fine.", I replied in Hiei-like fashion, surprised at the flat, edgy tone I'd never used before, except when playing Hiei on the show. I quickly evaluated things. Then I decided, I should eat quickly, change & retreat to my room.

What the hell is wrong with me? Why am I acting like Hiei? Hn . . . come to think of it, I'm a lot like him, I guess. Maybe that side of me's just coming out. Wait'll I tell Jerry, that punk'll be amazed at this! Whoa . . . hold it . . . this explains why I did Hiei so cocky and dark on the show today !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hn . . . I'm such a baka. I should have seen it coming! It all made sense . . . somehow in my subconscious mind, I'd gone on an adventure and come back like Hiei, minus the powers! This was freaky. I'd known I was different . . . I sometimes had a personality like Yami from Yu-gi-oh, and enjoyed sitting in complete darkness, which I found comforting, soothing even . . . but I'd never suspected I was this weird! No wonder. I chuckled to myself at the thought. Me? Like Hiei? No chance, what I'd have said four years ago. I hadn't even noticed it myself. No wonder I loved black. I was comfortable. Mom questioned my color choices often, along with other things, yet I had kept my Hiei-like darkness masked and she'd never found out, but of course she refused to accept that her sweet, light-hearted little daughter has a darker side. I'm "too sweet" for that. Yeah, right. Chuckle, Chuckle. Ridiculous.

Now, as I lay quiet in the dark room pondering these things, I realize my true nature, cold, ruthless, and oblivious to any of it. What irony. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse . . . That's when the real trouble began. I looked outside my window and for the first time scarlet eyes met icy blue ones. There, sitting in a tree was . . .
