Ch. 2: The Truth

Last Time

Now, as I lay quiet in the dark room pondering these things, I realize my true nature, cold, ruthless, and oblivious to any of it. What irony. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse . . . That's when the real trouble began. I looked outside my window and for the first time scarlet eyes met icy blue ones. There, sitting in a tree was . . .

This Time

"HIEI! How in the"

"Hn . . . let's just say I've been keeping my eye on you, ningen."

"What the- but you're just . . . "

"An anime character? Wrong. I'm real, and I know everything about you, Erin."

For the first time I froze, icy blue eyes locked in the compelling scarlet ones.

"Hn. I shoulda known this was gonna happen." Hiei just looked at me. I closed my icy blue eyes and continued,

"I'm your female equivalent, Hiei. I'm just like you.", I laughed. He just looked at me, closed his blood red, scarlet eyes, and laughed with an infamous "Hn." Suddenly, I Ieaped on an impulse. I landed in the tree, right next to him. An arrow landed in the tree trunk within five seconds. Hiei's eyes widened, he looked at me in shock.

"How'd you do that?", he asked in complete, stunned amazement.

"Hn. Reflexes.", Hiei chuckled. So did I.

"You were right, ningen."

"Of course, you baka! Would I lie to you?", I asked, mimicking his voice.

Hiei stared at me for a moment. His eyes flickered with emotion, then returned to ice.

"How'd you know about the arrow?", he asked.

"Hn. Don't know. Sensed it, I guess.",I replied, unsure myself how I'd done it.

Hiei and I sat and talked for a while. He told me of his sister, Yukina, and the sad story that followed them. Finally he looked into my eyes and said something that stunned me.

"I could fall in love with you, ningen."

"Hn. Skip the formality, Hiei. Call me Erin.", Hiei blushed slightly

"Okay . . . Erin. It's still true." This time it was my turn to blush. My face grew hot, and I turned away, then jumped out of the tree. Suddenly I thought of something ... the arrow. "Hn . . . Hey, Hiei?"

"Yes . . . Erin?"

"I could fall in love with you, too." Hiei smiled, then came into my room.

"You'll need training, you know."

"Hn . . . Of course. So you'll be staying to train me?"

"Hn. Koenma won't mind, once I tell him I'm training a half-youkai."

"Hn. What?!", I said, my expression changing. But I knew. I had known forever.

I was half human- half fire youkai. My element was the same as Hiei's.

No wonder I felt a connection to him. , I thought now. My speed, my strength . . . it all made sense now. I was extremely fast and strong . . . twice the speed of most girls or boys my age. Then I changed into my pajamas. Shortly after, Hiei walked in.

"You need to rest now, Erin. Your training . . . "

"I know, will begin in the morning by the tree, the same one we met under tonight.", I finished.

"Do you have a jagaan eye, Erin?"

"Yes, why?", I asked

"Because you read my mind. Do you know how to use a katana?"

"Vaguely, yes.", I replied.

"Good. Chances are if you're a fire youkai like me, that's your spirit weapon. I'll train you with mine in the morning."

"No need. We can fight each other. I have my katana."

"But you barely know how to use it?"

"Hn."

"All right, then. Get ready to battle me and learn some techniques in the morning."

"'Night Hiei. I love you."

"I love you, too. Sleep well."

"Hn. You, too. You'll need your energy, 'cause I fight hard. I know you do, too, so I'll be ready."
