Cold…

Empty…

Lifeless…

Not a single trace of demon energy could be found in the female's body. The plant wielder was on the ground where the body laid and began mumbling words of an insane man. Absence mindedly, Kurama ran his fingers through Hiei's hair, while he cradled the fire demon's head in his lap. One of the few people that he admired and respected, the one that brought him unimaginable worry and happiness was now dead; and guilt weighed heavily on his heart. As Kurama continued to stare at the lifeless body, he found that Hiei's last expression of mixture of torment and relief was permanently sketched into the her face.

During this time, Kurama was completely oblivious of the fight taken place between Yuusuke and Miroshi, and Kuwabara verse another fleet of Miroshi's experiments. The observers didn't know if they should be concerned about the sanity of the red head or the death-threatening hordes of demons.

The fighters halted, when the scenery started to shift around them, from the grass drying up to the cherry blossom trees shriveling. They could sense an enormous amount of energy growing around them and source was coming from Kurama. They watched as the top student of Meiou High School lay Hiei gently on the only green grass in the area.

In a composed motion, Kurama got to his feet. All the fighters knew that this was the calm before the storm as they watched Kurama move closer. His swaying hair covered his eyes and a reddish light surrounded him.

"I see you are ready to fight." Miroshi commented.

"I will personally escort you to the depths of hell for what you have done." The voice was no longer that of Shuuichi Minamino but the tone of the legendary fox spirit as his head snapped up to relieve golden eyes. Then silver streaks over powered the red hair and his school uniform altered into white clothing. The humans, stared in awe at the newly transformed Kurama and a few unwelcome and inappropriate marks about his sexy good looks.

Instantly, the battle begun when the two enemies clashed with fierce powers. Kurama used his plants and Miroshi manipulated his energy to form shields around himself and power blasts. They were unrelenting as they used every attack they could think of to defeat the other.

"This has been very enjoyable but I 'm afraid, I'll have to leave. In two years, I'll be holding a tournament. Maybe by then, you'll be a challenge for me." With a smirk, Miroshi extended his hands and sent an invisible force at the spirit fox. The force smashed Kurama into the ground. Next, Miroshi released an energy bomb at the fallen figure. The ground blew up under the force of the bomb as it hitting the target.

"Spirit Gun!" Yusuke announced his trademark attack. Miroshi fazed out before the attack connected. "Damn it. That bastard got away." As tears were dripping down his face, Yusuke slammed his fists against one the trees, making it fall. "Kurama!" Yusuke's mind snapped as he remembered that the fox could have been injured from the assault.

Yusuke ran to the crater-sized hole, where broken rocks were piled up on one another. A hand popped out of the rubble and silver fox was hastily making his way up.

"Where is he?" A growl erupted from Kurama's throat, while his eyes searched the area for Miroshi.

"The piece of shit left." Yusuke mumbled. Yoko Kurama frowned and began to walk back to Hiei. In the distance, Kuwabara spoke clearly as he tried to comfort the ice maiden as tear gems poured out of her eyes. Once Kurama reached the spot where he'd placed Hiei, he only found an impression left in the grass.

"Where is Hiei's body?" Kurama bellowed to the crowd of humans. "Damn it, one of you, speak!" The whole crowd backed off in fear. Kurama's temper was set off again and he commanded his plants to capture some people within the branches of the trees.

"Her body just disappeared." One of the captives choked out as the branches closed tightly around her neck.

"Let me go! Just because your fuck toy was killed, doesn't mean you can trap us like this. The little he, she demon bitch, deserved to die." A male, still stuck within the branches, stupidly voiced out.

Kurama's eyes were filled with a bright, glowing red. Youko brought the smug human boy forward.

"It's good you are listening to me. At least you are still smart, for a demon that is." The boy smiled until he felt a sharp pain wrapping around his leg. Thorny vines griped his flesh as he screamed. Blood flowed freely down the boy's body but the sight of blood didn't stop Kurama. Smaller vein sized vines crawled into the male's skin and tighten around the muscles and travel through the boy's blood stream. A couple of brave soul came running to Kurama and begging him to release the boy. However, their request fell on death's ear as just watched.

"Hurry and get those wards around him!" The voice of the teenaged, Koenma, shouted. A bunch of ogres ran to the scene while Kurama concentrated on killing the student slowly. The wards quickly took effect and the plants that were holding the student hostage were withdrawn.

"Koenma." Kurama hissed out. "Tell me what happen to Hiei's body?"

"I'm sorry, Kurama but I don't know."

"You don't know! Where is Hiei!"

"Hiei's spirit never checked into the spirit world and he's filed as a lost soul." Koenma said mournfully. The writing on the wards glowed an eerie color that signaled that Kurama was trying to get loose. The wards became active and started to drain the spirit fox's power.

"When I release myself, I'm going to kill you for your incompetence." Kurama bitterly said.

"Please, Kurama, calm down or the wards will drain you of all your energy and you will die." However, Kurama didn't listen to the teenaged prince of the spirit world.

"Shuuichi?" A soft questioning tone of Shiori was picked up by Kurama's ears. Shiori moved cautiously to her son.

"Mother…" He whispered and lowered his head in shame and then his legs gave in. Shiori rushed to her son and knelt down in front of him. Kurama still hid his face from her but Shiori cupped both sides of his face and lifted it up. No words needed to express the sorrow of mother and son because they could clearly see it in each other's faces. Then Shiori gently pulled him into her arms.

"Mother, Hiei, didn't deserve to die, right?"

"Hiei had every right to live. Don't believe anyone that tells you otherwise."

"I wasn't aware that Hiei… the children had the right to live, didn't they?"

"Yes, they should have had the chance to live, too."

"Mother, I'm a bigger monster than I thought I was. I let down four people who needed me. I deserve to die, don't I, Mother?" Kurama's cold raged died back to guilt as he returned into the red headed, Shuuichi.

"No…because deep in your heart, you didn't mean to act that way. By Hiei's memories, I could see why you behave in such a matter. You were just frighten by your emotions. Frighten by love. You both went through a lot together, and it was the first time either of you experienced true love. And it was my fault that you couldn't come to terms with your feelings."

"That's not true."

"It is true. When I became sick. Your love for me, taught you desperation , the desperation of losing those closest to you and obligations that you thought you owed me. It's my fault that I didn't teach you that there is more to love. I'm sorry. I'd failed you."

"You didn't fail me. You taught me a lot but I brushed some of it aside but you have allowed me to experience a mother's love and human emotions. And I failed to show Hiei, the good kind of emotions you have taught me." That was his last words before slipping into unconsciousness.

"Now, what is it about Hiei's soul being lost?" Yusuke asked in a weary voice, he was both emotionally and physically drained like Kurama.

"Many demons have been going missing or have been slay due to the raise of the underworld. I believe, Hiei was a target because he was going to replace Mukuro and by destroying Hiei's soul, they are sending a message for all opposing people."

Two Years later

"Test 27... Failure"

"Test 28 .... Failure"

"All Tests ...are...Failures."

A swarm of demonic scientists gathered around their highly valued test subjects. The demons had enormous expectation on the new abilities and great power the experiments would possess. So, great care and hard work has been put into these experiment, more than the other hundred that came before it. When the fruits of their labor took form; the results weren't as they expected.

"The boss isn't going to be happy about this little slip up."

"I combined the DNA, two of the most powerful demons in Makai. A lot of trouble went into getting the blood sample."

"After all that work. We get a defective child."

"We have no use for him. He is faulty."

"Should we dispose of him?"

"No. Just switch him with one of the other children from the field test. Those kids shown much promise than this hybrid child. An original child would do much better than this one. And when we display the strength of the switched baby as one of our test subject, we'll get rewarded." The scientist crackled.

"Hanzukee…What a pleasant surprise to see you in my domain." Miroshi spoke pleasingly as he sipped on his cup of wine.

"I have been busy. Imprisoning different types of demon all over Makai for our army is a grueling task." Hanzukee steadily walked into view of Miroshi.

"Yes, I know… I would like to thank you for your work in getting me what I wanted." A small smile graced Miroshi's lips.

"Helping you, also benefited me." Hanzukee replied.

"It doesn't matter. I have Hiei in my possession and that is all that matters."

"So, you did use my orb to capture the half breed. So, what happened to that kitsune once you pulled the orb out of Hiei."

"I, extremely enjoyed the look in his face as he shifted into his youko form, in front of all the ningen. He was overcome with murderous rage, along with his two companions. But I got bored quickly. It wasn't a challenging fight, to say the least, and killing weaklings isn't very satisfying. Then I figured, two years would enough time for them to strengthen their powers and so I announce to them I would give a tournament. With that said, I decided to vanish not before I got Hiei's body and brought it back here."

"You over simplify things Miroshi."

"In two months, the tournament will begin and the second anniversary of Hiei's assumed death."

"Did you clear out Hiei's memories?"

"Certainly."

"And where is he now?"

"He looking at the power tanks of the experiments 1-4. Along with that ice master you got."

"Did you make sure both of those demons memories were thoroughly erased before letting them go near the tanks because those experiments can bring back their memories."

"Don't worry."

"Remember those test objects are only on loan to you."

"I understand perfectly. Now, if you will excuse me, I'll go check on them."

"I will back next month for them." Miroshi didn't say anything as he walked out of the throne room.

The low humming of various machines could be heard echoing in the lab. A large tank filled with a green solution trapped took over must of the space in the room. However, the green solution was looking unstable as it kept glowing off and on. Hiei stood, impatiently, waiting for any kind of movement from the green tanks. He had no idea why he was drawn to three of theses demons that rested within the liquid.

They all looked like teenagers. The smallest of the three was the girl. Her hair was a bluish black that reached to her shoulders and had a figure resembled a well-trained dancer. In the next tank was a boy, his black hair stood straight up even the liquid and his rat tailed hair swayed back and forth and there was one red piece of hair that hanged shortly loose from the top of his forehead. Also, he was the tallest one between the three. The last one, somehow, a painful feeling struck Hiei every time he looked at the boy. The teenaged looking boy had long hair, which was mix of red and whitish silver. His face seemed oddly familiar to someone he couldn't remember.

Hiei slowly turned his attention to the other demons in the room. The blue and green haired demon, named Touya, also felt familiar, as stood in front of the fourth tank with another girl trapped within it. The girl in the tank had a small horn within her purple hair with dark green strains. Neither of them knew why they were attracted to kids in the tank but both of them came constantly when they discovered this room.

"They are yours. If you want them." Miroshi said, looking at Hiei as entered the room.

"Why would I want to baby-sit a bunch of children?" Hiei pretended that was uninterested in the kids.

"These demons have raw talent that you would appeal to you. It is your choice but when you are done here, Hiei, come to my chamber by midnight." Miroshi bent down and kissed softly on the lips. Hiei didn't protest to the action but didn't participate either.

Hiei had a displeased expression as he watched Miroshi leave the room. When the fire demon turned back to the tank, he was surprise to see the teenagers moving. They all moved close enough to touch the glass and their eyes sparkled with fascination.

"Do you have any clue, on how to release them?" Touya asked as he was looking over the hundreds of buttons in the room. Hiei didn't bother to answer as he withdrawn his sword. Before Touya could question his motive, the sound of glass shattering, filled the room. The watery substance gushed out and flooded the room. The four demons were release from their confinement and shakily standing to their feet.

The six of them didn't say a word until a little pig became popping out of Touya's pocket and nuzzled its nose against the purple haired girl with the small horn.

"Aw. Aren't ya a little cutie." The girl cupped the flying pig into her hand. "What's it's name?"

"Hammy." Touya replied.

"He looks lika Bacon to me but Hammy is great, too." An indescribable pang hit Touya at the name of Bacon.

"What's your name by the way?"

"They call me, four, during practice runs."

"I assume the rest of you have numbers also." Hiei directed the statement to the others.

"Why do you want to know our names?' A gentle rage came out of girl number three but red eyes shown sadness more than fury. 'You are just going to use us like the others!"

"You shouldn't make assumptions." Hiei said in a firm tone. The young demon was taken back by his reply.

"But then…why…why have you released us?" Number three was completely puzzled.

"I don't know." Hiei put it simply. The tallest one walked closer to Hiei and crouched down to eye level.

"You have nice eyes." A soft pair of jaded-green eyes stared unwavering into Hiei's eyes. "Why don't you give us names?" The boy put on a tender smile that could melt a glacier.

"Pick your own names." Hiei turned his head away. The boy softly brought his hand to Hiei's face and directed Hiei's head back to meet him eye to eye.

"I rather you decided for me." The guy smoothly said.

"Zima."

"um…" Number two was caught off guard by Hiei's quick answer

"Your name is Zima."

"Then Zima it is." Zima smile widen as he stood up and took his place near the others.

"Yours is Hinato." Hiei looked at the girl, who faces was void of all expression but in a few seconds, she nodded her head with a small smile on her face. After that, Hiei's eyes fell on the last boy, who was leaning against the wall, seemly bored with the conversation.

"Seishiro!" Hiei called out. Number one was surprised by the shout and quickly looked at Hiei.

"Are you addressing me?" Seishiro said with an air of superiority.

"It appears that you like your name Seishiro." Zima told him with a smile. Seishiro frowned at him.

"Hey, whata about me?" The girl with the horn pointed to herself.

"How about Eiko?" The ice master threw out a suggestion.

"Okie dokey. My new name is Eiko." Eiko was bubbling with cheerfulness.

"Can I ask you one thing?" Hinato's voice was more timid than earlier and her face was turning red.

"What is it?" Hiei asked.

"Can we get some clothes?" Hinato shyly tried to cover herself with her arms. It was weird to all of them that they didn't notice before. Touya usual pale face began to grow a bright red and he directed his eyes away and Hiei did the same as Touya.

"Why are you looking away, Hiei, sweetheart?" A sly smile came to Seishiro's face. "You don't like what you see?" Seishiro stretched his hands over his head as to display a few of his muscles.

"Lets just find you some clothes and don't call me, sweetheart." Hiei stormed out the room.

"I am right behind you, sweetheart." Seishiro grinned as they followed Hiei out.
