Chapter 4
Rekindling
No sleep. It simply wasn't possible after Hiei left. Those words echo in his head and muddle his thoughts. I have never wished to possess you and I never will. So simple, so Hiei in every way. Everything that his partner tries so hard to hide is in those words; caring for others, shyness, responsibility, honor... completely the opposite of what most people believe. That's alright - those that believe the false image he puts up don't deserve his company, they can't appreciate it for what it is.
After several hours of tossing and turning he went for a walk. The cool mist of the morning is calming to his frazzled nerves and the scent of the forest around him is comforting. Gankai certainly wouldn't mind his wandering around, she is probably already up anyway. He stays away from the temple just in case, not wanting to disturb anyone.
He sighs and looks toward the still dark sky. "It's not like you to hesitate Kuro."
A deep chuckle washing over his and two arms wrap around his waist. "I couldn't decide whether to interrupt your thoughts or not. You seemed to be seeking solitude, but at the same time... well old habits die hard and I couldn't leave you out here alone." Kurama smiles to himself. Kuro always knows what he's thinking and feeling. It comes naturally after 700 years. They didn't really need to explain things to one another anymore. How easy would it be to fall back into that old life? So comfortable... so easy and uncomplicated... only his partner to worry about; simple. He leans back and opens his cloudy green eyes to meet Kuro's violet ones.
"Things aren't the same. They don't understand, and I have new obligations."
Kuro shakes his head slowly. "Human lives are transient Foxy. I can wait for you."
Kurama sighs, this greatly surprises Kuro who tightens his grip. "That's not the only thing I'm talking about Kuro."
Kuro nods. "The fire demon then. You did pick a new partner."
"I thought you were dead."
"Death didn't stop you. But I understand, I wasn't here to watch your back. You had every right to seek a new partner. I would still like to be part of your life though. Perhaps as just a lover then? I can take good care of you, even if you've never needed it." Kuro buries his nose in soft red hair and breathes deep. The scent envelopes him. It may be a bit different but it is still his beloved.
"They don't understand."
"Your human family you mean." Kuram nods. "I could explain, but chances are that you already have. Guess they will just have to deal with my persistence then. I won't give you up. Eventually they will see the truth, just like you."
"It's not that simple Kuro!"
"Why? Because HE is coming? I told you, I am going to destroy every last one of your excuses. When I do, I will make you my mate. We will live out the rest of our lives together doing whatever comes our way; theft, saving humans, even working for Enma. Wherever you go Foxy I'm going to be there for as long as I'm alive. It seems though, that death wasn't able to stop me the first time, maybe it won't... should that happen again. I don't know. What I do know is that I love you, I've searched for you, mourned you, and now that I've found you again I am going to do everything in my power to keep us together." He runs his hands up and down Kurama's sides, in an effort to keep him warm against the morning chill. The Fox lets out a shiver that has nothing to do with the cold air.
Kuro spin him around and kisses him gently. His fangs drag slowly over pale pink lips, then over his chin and down his neck. A guttural growl rumbles against the pulse in a very human neck, causing it to quicken dramatically. Kurama makes to push Kuro away but the chimera crushes the slim form to his own, arms locked tightly around his lover to keep him in place.
"Kuro stop."
"Why!? You've never cared what anyone thought before now. You can't tell me you don't want this." Kurama turns his head and lowers his voice. It is still clear and sound, but tinged with guilt.
"I am not ashamed of you. I simple wish to respect my families wishes. I need them to understand Kuro. I love my Mother dearly and cannot bear to cause her pain. She gave me life, and taught me... she taught me things that I had forgotten. I... I beg you to understand Kuro." Kurama buries his face in Kuronue's chest, unable to look his friend in the eye. Kuro doesn't deserve this from him, but Kurama can make no other choice.
"I... do understand; as much as I wish I didn't." Kuro takes Kurama's chin and tilts it up gently, forcing the red head to look at him. Their eyes lock and thoughts are exchanged with out a word. If words were to be applied they might go something akin to...
Understanding...
trust...
loyalty...
< br> patience...
And most importantly love.

I can wait. I can fight. Only for you though Foxy. Kuro runs the back of his hand over the curve of the pale cheekbone. His Foxy had fallen to sleep in his arms just before dawn. It wasn't heard to carry him back to his apartment. Kuro is finding it much harder to leave.
Contrary to what Yoko believes, Kuro is very aware of human customs. He knows just what those human's reactions were... and he knows how they have affected his now part human lover. So many things have changed in a short 23 years; strange how they are the longest in his life though. Humans live short passionate lives that are filled with more than most demons experience in thousands of years. But Yoko isn't one of those that let things pass him by. He always was, and still is in the thick of things. Doesn't knowing Raizen's descendant... being Yomi's 2nd... and partnering with Mukuro's heir prove that. How different and so very the same.
How Foxy things are.
He pulls the covers up and over that oh so effeminate body. Kuro leaves quickly through the roof for two reasons. The sun is coming up, the humans would be able to distinguish his huge black wings soon. The second is much more embittered.
A fiery ki is heading for the apartment.

A/N: Sorry for the short chapter. No need for as much subtlety with Kuro so its all pretty direct.
So I figured Kuro ought to have his say in all this too. Yes he is still watching over Kurama. What Kuro says is not necessarily what Kurama has decided either. If anything I think both he and Hiei have managed to throw a monkey wrench and a curve ball into Kurama's thoughts respectively.
Hiei insists that Kurama owes him nothing and that he doesn't want to tie our favorite Fox down in anyway; never has, never will.
Kuro on the other hand, respects any decision that Kurama will make and acknowledges that the decision is his. He only wishes to have some small part in his friend's life. Not too much to ask for if you think about the fact that they've known one another for 700 years and Kuro died to protect Kurama. He insists that given time he can improve Yoko's life, and desperately wants to be seen as useful to the man that he is so in love with.
Both of them have a completely different perspective on this that highlights a lot of the same traits in them that Kurama adores.
So, what is a poor fox demon to do?
