Chapter 5
The Worst Sound
'THUD'
Kurama has learned in his many years of life to dread that sound. Imagine if you can, he has never heard it without preceding some catastrophic, sad, disabling, life - altering, or otherwise not good event. The THUD of his siblings lifeless bodies on the ground, the THUD of his footsteps drawing near, THUD often signals the release of traps unheeded, the last THUD of his Mother's heart, THUD... the body of a fallen comrade, THUD the bars of a cell sealing shut for the first time in his life... all to protect his mother, and THUD is also the sound made when hollow bamboo embeds into the flesh of a chimera.
THUD is never a good sound, and it puts Kurama on edge immediately.
THUD is the sound that Hiei chose to make to alert Kurama to his presence, waking the red head from his slumber. His feet usually make no sound when he enters, it is entirely deliberate, a consideration to his partner who looks to have been up all night. Hiei does not comment on the fact that Kurama is wearing the same clothes as the night before, nor the dark circles under his eyes. He bites his tongue when he smells lingering traces of Kuronue in the air... but not any of untoward actions. The fox stands and offers Hiei a small, apologetic smile.
"Good morning Hiei. Would you like to join me for breakfast?"
The usual 'hn' sufficed for a response. Kurama made his way downstairs and Hiei followed. Breakfast is quickly prepared and quietly eaten, it isn't until after the dishes are done, and they move to the couch in the living room that the silence is broken.
"Why do you hide?" Hiei looks up in surprise at the question. Kurama indulgently smiles and leans in to catch Hiei's full attention, quietly explaining.
"You are hiding a hidden desire from me, while I know this is not new... you've been more open recently, and I ponder on the back track." Hiei just looks away, not saying anything, closing off. Fox pride flares up, this shall not be allowed. Kurama surprises them both by hugging his friend tightly, his bulky form lacked the ability to wriggle out that his smaller form might have managed... for the first time since his growth spurt Hiei resented being tall. He feels vulnerable, not for the position so much as the person. Kurama always made him feel vulnerable, he can hide nothing.
"I..."
"Yes Hiei?"
"I lo-" He is cut off by a gasp of surprise. Both demons turn and curse their distraction.

Shiori's defection from their happy bed to the cold couch was like ice water on Kazuya's soul. He could not convince her otherwise and had managed no sleep. He replayed the scene in his mind over and over and over. He should not have behaved that way, he was out of line. He would apologize to Suuichi first thing in the morning. That was what brought him, his wife, and son to the awkward moment before them.
Suuichi, his perfect step-son, role model to his own son is...
disheveled...
dressed in the same clothes as the night before...
embracing tenderly...
that HEATHEN FIRE DEMON!
"Father..." Suuichi begins, standing, disengaging himself from Hiei quickly. "...this isn't what it looks like..."
Kazuya snaps. "Not what it looks like... oh please great Fox thief do explain. I seem so intent on believing every lie that falls from your lips! To think I actually came to apologize for inappropriate conduct!" He is fuming, green eyes burn with pain, embarrassment... and perhaps a bit of shame. "I find you here in the same clothes you had on at dinner..."
"I couldn't sleep!"
"...with leaves in your tangled hair..."
"I went for a walk in the woods!"
"...fondling..."
"Comforting..."
"...that worthless little abomination!"
"... Hiei."
Silence. Suffocating silence. Glares and tempers rise, the air so filled with tension the slightest spark will send it up. Oddly enough, it is not the fire demon that provides it, but the human woman. She grabs her husbands arm and tugs toward the door.
"Kazuya we should give them privacy."
Privacy was perhaps not the best word to use.
"You little beast! YOU are responsible for his corruption!" Hiei admittedly hadn't expected it... which is why he didn't move. Kazuya that stupid human knocked the soda can from his young son's hand as his hands waved around in fury, it fell directly into his eyes. He felt the human move toward him quickly, he was unsure of intent and blinded; he reacted on pure instinct and swung.
THUD.
Hiei's punch connects solidly... but not with his intended mark. No, this is too curved, too delicate, to have been the short, fat, vile, human male. Hiei rubs the soda from his eyes to see a very delicate form slumped to the ground instead. The room is silent for one chilling moment as it all sinks in. Had he his eyes he would have seen the movement on the edge of his vision, would have seen the body come between him and that damned human. Hiei chocks and scrambles desperately for the right words, but this is not one of the moments where his natural fluidity steps up to help him; dire results.
"Fox I... I-I didn't mean... I'm sorry..."
He can feel his energy flare, temper break, masks crack for the first time in his memory. Shiori's blood fills his nose, the scent alone is too much, the sight of her in a crumpled heap on the ground... the THUD of the blow...
His fist sends Hiei into the stairs. His words hurt worse, words spoken to Hiei many times, always full of hate or anger; never by Kurama.
"Get out."
The chill in golden eyes sends fear racing down Hiei's spine and he runs.
He runs up the stairs and springs out the window. He doesn't look back. Fear drives him, or, at least that is what he is forcing himself to call it... there is fear... but it is not the more overwhelming emotion.
He won't name it... things without names are powerless. That is why the Kooromie had refused to name him, but his Mother had. Maybe that's why he had lived.
Before he knows it he's on the temple steps, he shoves aside the detective and the oaf, who look shocked, but he doesn't care. His sister emerges from the temple... straight in his path. He grabs her and takes the brunt of the fall they tumble and he comes to all fours, staring directly into his twins eyes. He cannot hide it from her, he cannot confront her. He runs again, sure she is unharmed, for his original target.
The portal is always open to him and he steps through it eagerly this time. Funny how he had stopped calling Makai home; how going to Alaric seemed more like a duty than anything.
Funny how Mukuro is waiting for him, arms wide open. He slams into her and she takes hold of him. Hiei struggles for a long time, minutes or hours he does not know until he goes slack in her arms and allows her to comb her fingers through his hair.
"Shh. It's ok. I'm here." The words seem stiff, he knows they are not hers. They are too human...
She sounds like Kurama.
When had Kurama started to sound human?
Why did he long for someone who obviously hated him now?
"Shh my son, what has upset you so?"
And he talks. Talks because he feels powerless to do anything else.
***
Kuronue felt the sharp spike of his love's aura and came as quickly as possible. Screw the humans, they never pay attention anyway. He arrived in time to see Hiei fly across the room, and couldn't believe his eyes for a moment.
Yoko's true emotions on display, uncontrolled.
Green eyes reappear from underneath the sea of molten gold as his anger melts away and leaves something much uglier behind. He steps past the humans quickly but does not reach to comfort yet... he is still in shock.
"Yo-... Suu-... no, Kurama." Green eyes turn to him, dark and growing wet.
"I h-hit, I h-hurt him."
Kuronue grabs him by the shoulders now. "Hiei will not be taken out by one punch, he's taken quite a few and much worse."
"That's not what hurt him." Kuronue could say nothing, for they both knew it to be true. The tears welled in his green eyes have yet to fall but it's a close thing. "I lost control Kuro. Why must this be my fatality? My lack on control will des-"
"Shut up!" It comes out as a growl. A hand clamped over his mouth. "Your Mother needs attention." A desperate attempt on Kuro's part to distract him, to keep him from condemning himself. Yoko could not give in. Much to Kuro's relief, it works.
He picks up his Mother and sets her on the kitchen counter. He gently dabs at her swollen cheek and goes to make her an ice pack. The little cubes mock him as he drops them one by one.
The wretched noise.
I despise THUD.

A/N: Sorry it's been so long, between finals and holidays I have had no time what so ever. Not to mention that this chapter was so very wonderful to write. Maybe I subconsciously put it off for that reason. I hate it when people that care so deeply about one another hurt one another.
Hiei did not intend to hit Shiori... though I bet I made you think he hit Kurama there for a second. She and Kazuya both were running up to see if Hiei was alright, no intended violence.
Kurama was already pissed and Shiori getting hurt made him snap. He's under a lot of stress and on very little sleep, he's not perfect so yes, he really did hit Hiei in anger. I claim temporary insanity for him. How is he going to fix it? Can he fix it? What will Mukuro do?
Just what do are poor other group members think? I mean come on... a very distraught Hiei nearly tramples his most beloved sister who got an eyeful of his turbulent emotions after a huge spike in both his and Kurama's auras. They've got to have questions and worries.
What of Kuro?
I start this one with the intent of clearing a few things up... like Hiei's emotions... and then they do this to me. Sorry guys, just more questions for you. Maybe you'll get your answers next chapter.
Until then...
