Chapter 9
Training

"... and that's all I know I'm afraid."

"So this guy killed Kurama's whole family Koenma?"

"Yes Yusuke, and countless kitsune before him. He hunts them down. We don't know anything about him other than that his name is Makatashi."

Kurama sits up, ignoring the pain that rips through him. "That's not quite accurate. His title is Makatashi his name has been lost to time."

"Kurama!" They all turn to him. Shiori's tear covered face brings him pain and he chooses to look down instead.

"That man is the hunter that has killed off my entire family, and I don't just mean my immediate family. Aunt, uncles, cousins... I have none. He has systematically hunted down and brutally murdered each and every one of us; I am the last. I've insured it. My Mother was supposed to end it, but she couldn't. I have no children. No one will have to go through this after me. Have no worries Koenma."

"I didn't know about this until know Kurama. Father kept it from me. If you die it will be the end or your kind! You can't do this! Inari's messengers..."

"...are ending. She will find another family, one more suitable. His vendetta will end with me."

"Kurama my Father failed to protect you and your family! I can't just..."

"The debt has long been repaid in my mind, with my use of the mirror of darkness. Besides that, you information is tainted. The barrier didn't fail, my brother Ryat broke it. He thought he could convince Makatashi to go after him, the rest of the family would be spared."

"But..."

"If you insist on doing something, then take care of Shura."

Yusuke jumps in. "Don't worry Kurama we sent word ahead to Gandarra."

Kurama shakes his head. "Not even Yomi, can keep Shura safe at this point." The room is left in stunned silence and their favorite red head slowly wobbles to his feet. He sways a bit then manages to straighten up, obviously still in no condition to be out of bed.

"Hn, Fox, you should rest more. That bastard did quite a number on you." Hiei actually eyes Kurama with a weary expression. Kurama just gives him a small gentle rather foreboding smile that makes Hiei's stomach clench. This can't be good.

"Hiei, I am already responsible for Shura's death. I will not be responsible for anyone else's. I need to get out of here. Thank you all for sharing the joys of happiness and friendship with me... I'll carry these memories with me to the grave. Kuro... we haven't been to the West den lately now have we? There is still time to get there tonight I think." Kuro moves over and picks Kurama up.

" 'Course Foxy, but you still need rest. Somehow, I knew you'd wind up running. West den it is." He moves toward the exit and finds Shiori blocking it.

"Suuichi, when... when will you be coming home?" Her face is still brimmed with tears. She looks like she's been through hell, and he knows that assumption is not too far of base. Her eyes are hopeful and that probably kills him the most. How can he possibly say what he needs to? Kurama decides that looking away from her will make it easier.

"I have no home and no family. Please understand, I told you... there are things in this life that I am not allowed." She stays quiet and the ache in his heart increases. "If I stay, I will have to fight him again, he may kill someone else. I don't want that to happen."

"Well you'd best get going then. Don't forget to pack something warm." Kurama's head snaps up to stare at the woman before him. That was not the answer he had expected. She smiles at him. "Say what you will Suuichi, do what you must. There are things though, that you do not control. I am your Mother, I always will be. Those in this room, we are your family and friends, we care about and love you. You can't change that." There is a general mummer of agreement. "So go ahead and run, I don't want to see..." She chokes a bit. "I don't want to see that awful man hurt you again. Know that you always have a home here with me." There it is again, the smile that has hung over his head for years... he couldn't run from it then... and he can't now. Kuronue sighs.

"Might as well go sharpen my blade. Geese Foxy why are you such a sucker!?" He sets Kurama down and starts to leave, but Kurama calls after him.

"Kuro..." He turns. "Bring them to me. It's about time I stop living in the past." Kuro nods and leaves the room.

A day later Kuarama is up out of bed despite Shiori's protests. After grabbing breakfast he disappears for a few hours without telling anyone. Since no demons were known to be present in the area they decided he probably just needs time to himself.

Kuwabara and Keiko have decided to go home, promising to return on the promised day. After a few fights between Yusuke and Kuwabara the two depart. Kazuya goes off to work but Shiori and Suu-chan stay behind to wait and see exactly what Kurama is planning. Koenma and Botan went back to spirit world.

The temple somehow feels empty.

When Kurama returns... he isn't recognized at first. there is a brown cloak covering most of his frame. He says nothing as he enters the temple. If not for the red hair peeking out he might have met some trouble.

"Suuichi? Where have you been?" Shiori places her hand on her son's shoulder to get him to turn to her. He lowers the hood and shoots her a soft smile.

"Sorry to worry you Mother. I simply needed a few items." He turns back to the table in front of him and pulls out a cloth roll, a stone, some rose oil, and a very soft looking rag. They watch closely as he unrolls the bundle to reveal seven silver daggers and a few odd looking instruments. Kurama pours a bit of the rose oil on the old stone. He pulls out the first dagger and begins to sharpen it very slowly and methodically. Green eyes track the movement of the blade without faltering, it is as if the action has put him into some sort of trance.

Yusuke probably notices first that he's feeding his ki into the blade.

"Hey Fox-boy... what's all that for? I've never seen you use those before." Kurama smiles and continues the sharpen the blade. He answers Yusuke without looking at him or breaking his rhythm.

"That would be because I laid my daggers aside long before I met you Yusuke."

"So... you actually know how to use those things?"

Kurama's smile is sad. "No... I am sorely out of practice."

"Hn. So that's what was missing from your fighting." Kurama's smile brightens at Hiei's words.

"Ah, yes Hiei I suspected that you noticed. However, I never expected to take them up again."

"Your style suffers greatly from the loss Fox, why didn't you keep up with them?"

Kurama laughs. "What can I say? Mother didn't believe in letting a 5-year-old have knives."

"Nice joke Fox."

"Press not for the answer unwillingly given Hiei."

With that the conversation drops as Kurama continues to sharpen each and every single blade with infinite care. The other strange instruments are tended to as well, though some of it went complete over most everyone's heads. Hiei recognizes some of the devices as things that Kurama had used to break the seals on Reikai's vault; But he does not recognize all of them.

Each device has it's own unique spot; 13 items in all. Kurama polishes them all and secures them back in their spots, slinging the cloth around his hips and ties it. It seems that the roll doubles as a belt. He messes with the tie for a moment to get just the right fit. He slips off his shoes and heads out into the woods.

Yusuke who had fallen asleep, feels Kurama's movement and wakes up with a 'whoop', punching the air. "Hell yeah, I've always wondered how Fox-boy trains..."

"Hurry up detective or we'll loose him." Yusuke follows Hiei out with Shiori and Suu-chan on their heels. Genkai remains in the temple with Yukina. Yukina wants to follow but decides it is none of her business and goes about her chores at the temple.

Kurama moves swiftly and silently through the woods drawing up his energy as he goes. The trees and other vegetation are excited. They feel what he is going to do. They wish to help. He gently reassures them and they guide him to the most suitable location.

Seeds fall from his finger tips as he walks, they disappear quickly as they hit the ground. With each passing seed the shadows from the trees grow more numerous. As he reaches the final clearing he is surrounded. The creatures look much like the hominids from demon city, but have been improved for Kurama's own personal use. Green hulking beasts with grassy heads still, but they no longer look completely mindless and slow. They move around to cover any escape routes. Everything is still for a few moments. A soft breeze ripples clothing and hair every so slightly.

When the breeze dies down, they lunge.

Silver flashes, slicing through the green beasts with astounding ease. Ten, fifteen, twenty, fall to the ground in a heaping mess. a swirl of color and motion far to fast for human eyes riots across the clearing. Red, silver, green; the colors that represent the ancient kitsune are decorating the clearing in a macabre sort of beauty. Kurama's fighting has often been described as dancing, even more so now that his weapon of choice has been returned to him. The only music is the steady beat of ripping flesh.

The two primary daggers are lost so the second set is pulled. His style shifts ever so slightly. Faster shorter strokes with less flair. The flow of movement is more about momentum than balance here. The power in those strokes downright carves the hominids unlucky enough to be hit in half. It is brutal and quick, but not lacking in grace. One movement continuously flows into the next and the momentum builds strength with each slice. Eventually the power is to much for his frame and he looses grip on the second set.

The third set gleams with Kurama's energy. As he slashes through his enemies, helping plants sprout through the wounds. A river of vines crawls up from the corpses, Kurama rides them , flips through them for cover, and dodges past as they strike out. One can no longer tell the difference between weapon and wielder. The energy expended surrounds and suffocates the poor hominids. But eventually Kurama's energy runs low and the thirds set fall from his exhausted hands.

He hesitates.

The pause is only momentary, his harsh breathing echoing through the clearing. Slowly, he reaches for the center back, the last dagger. He pulls it and snap it to the front of his face, point up. His left hand raises to rest against the blade.

The next moment is a complete blur. The hominids close in and Kurama hits his knees. A strange energy is felt right before Kurama disappears from sight. The squabbling green mass on top of Kurama ceases movement after a bit. They move off slowly to reveal a defeated Kurama.

With their Master's orders fulfilled the hominids recede into seeds and give their energy back to him. The red head is laid out on the ground. His chest is heaving and body covered in bruises and cuts. He shows no sign of moving anytime soon.

Shiori is the first to reach him. Yusuke picks him up and Hiei gathers the daggers up.

No one says a word as they head back to the temple.

'Sorely out of practice' indeed.

A/N: Looks like you get at least three chapters.

I think daggers really do compliment Kurama's fighting style, and the cloak was just to accentuate the fact that he is a thief. Not many thieves want people to know what they look like. For goodness sakes he is usually bright white, not exactly stealthy for nighttime raids.

As you may have guessed, each set of daggers represent a different level of skill in the opponent, which is why the tactic changes. The first is for weaklings, the second for large groups of brutes, the third for a skilled enemy... and he failed in the last style. I will yet to tell you anything about it. Suffice to say that it is the most powerful.

I'm sorry if you don't know what the hominids look like. Think plant people.

Kuronue has yet to return, but he will be back soon. He he he.
