Chapter 11
Calm
"... and that's what happened." A lame way to end it in his own opinion but at the moment he simply isn't feeling like his usual eloquent self. Telling Hiei about that particular night hadn't been easy, especially with the emotions it brought up. The silence that falls between them is not exactly tense, but more reflective. It is a bit of a balm on the raw edges of the emotions that cut into them. However there are still more issues to be addressed.
"So you are going to fight him tomorrow."
"Yes. I couldn't abandon Shiori then and I can't now. I just have to wonder if the others truly understand that there is very little hope of us winning this one."
"There was very little hope of us winning the fight against Toguro." Hiei muses as he leans against the tree, starring out over the lake.
"This is different." Kurama curls his hands to himself.
"Not very. The only real difference that the main objective of our opponent is to kill you instead of the Detective."
"Toguro wasn't immortal."
"No one is Fox, look at Raizen."
"I-" Hiei gets right in Kurama's face now, starring straight into his eyes.
"And since when do you defeat yourself before a fight even begins? My partner wouldn't fall for such nonsense." His eyes widen a touch, he's knows Hiei is right, but even still; it's difficult to hope. Especially when the person who is trying to convince you to do so, is doing it unwittingly as he possesses none himself. Hope is something that Hiei has never understood, and rarely experienced.
Kurama merely smiles, and he wonders to himself if Hiei can tell how shallow it really is. His friend may not be very experienced at cheering people up but for some reason, at least for Kurama, he always knows what to say. Whether Hiei can see his inner struggle or not, it seems to do the trick and both relax.
Hiei sinks down next to Kurama and they are quiet for a time. The fox spirit is far from finished though. He had once again hurt Hiei, and although he never got the opportunity to apologize before, he can and will now. But words have always been cheap for him when it comes to apologies, and there is no way to know if Hiei will understand what he's really trying to convey.
It's worth a try, Hiei is worth it.
"Hiei, I want to tell you - "
"Fox, don't."
" - that I'm sorry."
There is a pause. Now a sharp pain in his jaw; he is reacquainted with the tree behind him as it shudders from the impact. His head spins for a moment, but he regains his bearings quickly, and as he holds his cheek, he looks up at Hiei standing coolly over him.
Hiei hit him.
"There guess we're even now." The sink in slowly, and Kurama has to search a bit before he finds it in Hiei's eyes. There, faint, just barely hidden, is not only the understanding Kurama had wished to convey, but his own apology waiting for the same understanding. He grants Hiei the courtesy, but finds he can't stop himself...
...he laughs.
He laughs until tears come from his eyes and his sides ache in pain. He laughs until he can feel a headache rising in his temple; then he laughs some more. Hiei thinks he's lost it. His partner stares, not understanding what could have possibly caused the outburst.
"Hn, stupid Fox, I think I hit you too hard."
Finally Kurama is able to stop, and before Hiei can protest Kurama grabs him and pulls him close; hugging the fire demon gently. Hiei stiffens, not really comfortable with the contact, and even less sure of why or what it means.
"Thank you Hiei."
Hiei doesn't pull away, but neither does he return the embrace. He's uncomfortable, he doesn't understand the feelings Kurama brings out in him. He doesn't understand Kurama... at least not as well as he'd like to. He doesn't understand that desire either. But he doesn't pull away, and he doesn't run, from Kurama or the feelings coursing through him. He just let's them both wrap around him. It's strange, and a little... frightening... but maybe...
It's enough for now.

Dawn comes only too soon. The old woman stands firm against the day despite her small stature. She can feel the city beyond her lands, thriving and pulsing with life. The city moves on today, it does not care of those that will die, does not know the fate that is to be decided on her meager shrine grounds. Many will die today, some of illness, some by accident, some by their own hands. In that respect, today is much like every other day.
The difference today is selective to those on the shrine grounds.
What Genkai knows is that she must do everything she can to sway death away from the beloved red head of their group. He may well be older than she, but from what she can see, he is no older than the boys he allies himself with. He has been permanently frozen in his development by the monster he faces today. She cannot allow that beast to claim one of her own.
Yes, her own. The rag tag Reikai Tantai have long been considered her sons, at least, to her. While she is sure some would not appreciate the sentiment, she could really care less. She thinks of them as her own all the same. It was with that reasoning that she helped her eldest with his request to train six demons to A-class fighting levels. She knew her children's squabbling would only bring them closer in the end.
She passed her powers on to her favorite many years ago. She is weak compared to her children now, but they have a lot to learn in terms of experience, in which she surpasses them in spades.
Except perhaps her eldest. The clever fox thief that had long since worried her more than the others and yet she provides the least support for. He has never really needed much in that respect. He has Shiori for that. What he seeks from her is guidance, and often she takes his problems in as her own.
Today her children face another great threat, one deliberately targeting her eldest. She is old and tired and stripped of the power she once had in her youth. However she is also crafty and battle worn. She knows that someone will die today.
Makatashi will not take her children today. Time to rouse the 'idiots'.

Damn infuriating Grandma had to kick them out of bed at the ass-crack of dawn. Sure they need to be on guard and ready for an attack, but no fucking sane demon would be up at this hour anyway. Then again, no sane demon would mess with Yoko Kurama and his friends.
Yusuke smiles to himself and gulps down the tea that Yukina made fresh for them. Kurama's aura is... disturbing. Not in the way he expected at all though. Fox-boy should be panicking like he was before. Wait, how could Yusuke tell the difference?
Maybe he'd known Fox-boy for a little too long.
But back to the thought at hand. Why does he seem so damn... peaceful? It's weird, and breakfast is too quiet, but not in an uncomfortable way. Clicks of china, scrapes of plates, and the familiar sound of chopsticks coming together. All familiar, common, peaceful. It's too fucking much. Kurama would call it the calm before the storm, Yusuke calls it annoying.
He'll be the first to admit he isn't a philosopher. Yes, he does know what that damn word means, just don't tell Keiko that he is capable of learning. He doesn't often ponder things beyond what is effecting his own small world, it's usually Keiko or Grandma, or yeah, sometimes Kurama that makes him think on a larger scale. But it always makes him uncomfortable. He doesn't really have a mind to 'contemplate the cosmos' when he can contemplate the crunch of facial bones breaking do to a beautifully landed punch on his part. Fighting is just who he is, and what he does. He's a fucking Mazaku.
So when he does find the time and interest to think about such things, he finds himself utterly insufficient. What would it feel like to look over your shoulder every day of your life and know that a shadow follows you, waiting to strike the moment you find something to be happy about? Why would someone do that to a kid? What will happen if Inari's messengers die out? Not that Yusuke really knows what that job entitles but Koenma sure seems worried enough about it.
Yusuke hates thinking about things he will probably never understand. He wants to fight.
His wish is granted as a familiar malicious ki flares up on the edge of his senses.

A/N: Sorry my posting has been erratic, the guys are getting difficult to predict and my internet time is sketchy at best. Try to hang in there with me will you?
OK, I know this one isn't very long but it hold a lot of emotional weight that isn't quite fully realized yet. I feel it is complete. More content but fewer words.
Kurama/Hiei love scene at the top. That is about as sappy as it is likely to get. They are not a squishy couple like Yusuke and Keiko. I cannot stand squishy Kurama/Hiei, it's OOC for me. I had to admit the scene was very difficult to write. I do not think well with a male mind; much less demonic, violent, warrior, male minds. It wasn't until after watching my brother and his friends interact for a long time that the solution came to me. I hope you find it as perfect as I did.
For those of you who read true dramatics works, the second section is for you, read carefully. Try not to cry on me too much. For those that don't understand, you will soon.
I love Yusuke's mind, I can read him the easiest of all four of the Reikai Tantei. I have no idea why this is, most would say I'm like Kurama (which might be why he's my favorite). Maybe I am, but whoever understands their own twisted mind? At any rate I love the way he looks at things and he has a habit of gravitating everything around him. A natural charismatic pull. The series, in general, is from his perspective. Not by way of a first hand account, but rather simply in the way it is presented. Philosophical problems of good and evil and the inner workings of an evil mind are settled in combat. Fist to fist. They are not solved by aimless thinking; at least from Yusuke's perspective. It's alright if you don't agree with my take on the series.
So I will post again as soon as I can, I have no intention of abandoning this fic.
