Chapter 12
A Fight Revisited
If he were one to show such things, Kurama might well be fiddling with the clasp of his cloak at the moment. Silly perhaps, but it is the nervous anticipation that is rushing through him at the moment. He is not afraid of dieing, because, why would one fear what they already know will come to pass? No, more than anything, he simply wants it over and done with. He want to be sitting on Botan's oar as they glide over the river Styx. He wants that moment where he feels his soul finally pulled from his body, to know that the pain can now end, that his family and friends are safe.
Kurama wants freedom.
In this life, he cannot be free. Makatashi will always be there, looming over him. So long as he is in the land of the living as a living person, no matter the amount of times he actually dies. But in the afterlife he can be free to roam Inari's Glen and find his family. They will undoubtedly be waiting for him. He will miss Shiori... and Hatanaka... and Suu-chan... and Yusuke... and Kuwabara... and Yomi... and S-Shura; he will have to see Shura before he goes to the Glen. Mostly he will miss Hiei and Kuroune. Perhaps he can get on Inari's good side well enough to let him visit them. But there in the Glen he can simply be himself, whomever that may be. Here he is Inari's messenger or Makatashi's pet, not names he has chosen for himself. In the Glen he can discover who Yoko... Kurama... Suuichi... really is.
Makatashi draws ever closer; taking his sweet time. He is building anticipation, they both know it, but he does it anyway. To Kurama's great dismay, it is working.
He comes into view over the steps and Kurama takes a few forward. He feels the others move behind him.
"Stop. It will take 6 minutes and 37 seconds to get everyone inside the temple and seal it. It will take me 7 minutes to unleash hell. If anything happens to my family I will hold you all personally responsible."
Yusuke's energy flares behind him. "Oh hell no Fox-boy you are not taking him on alone."
"Tick tock Yusuke."
Kuro grabs his arm, and for once, the man has dropped his carefree facade. "If he's planning what I think he is, we need to get inside, NOW." Kurama is striding forward slowly down the steps, gaining momentum as he goes.
"Dammit Fox-boy... let's go!" Yusuke takes off up the steps, grabbing Kazuya as they go, Hiei already has a hold of Shiori. She screams and reaches out toward Suuichi, her precious red-haired baby boy as he runs head long into a fight. Genkai and Yukina have already started to cast the protective spells. As they dash upward.
***
One step, two steps... faster and faster, running farther and farther from the people he loves the most. The steps become a blur as Makatashi takes off toward him as well. He jumps, twenty feet away and uses the high ground to his advantage. He automatically throws aside the first set of daggers and pulls his second, immediately moving into his short fluid motions that conserve strength. Downward slash, land, slash upward hip to shoulder with the left, straight shot to the abdomen with the right, left across the neck, regrip right, low blow to the left leg, left slash shoulder to hip. Interrupted, not one hit.
Defense.
Right foot back bracing to block, left arm forward to block his right, duck his left foot, hop back to avoid the spin. Backing away a few steps, off the concrete steps, into Kurama's territory. Head jerks back to avoid the right fist, sway left, sway right, jumps, duck, back flip to avoid the leg sweep. Dodge left, dodge right, right arm blocks the left, left leg to block his left. He favors left, how had Kurama not noticed before? Left leg again as expected, grab it and flip him, taken off guard.
Offense.
He lands, swipe left, right, middle upward. Go for the throat, the legs, the arms. Don't break the dance, on movement into the next. Lines become angles become triangles... push him back into the forest. One step forward at a time. Right foot forward, two hit with the right blade. Left foot forward, one hit two blocked with the right blade. A leg comes out of nowhere and knock the blades from his hands.
Defense.
Two blows to his chest. Hops back a few times and catches his breath. Assess, not much damage. Step left to avoid the blast rebound off the tree. Vines to block his claws, grass grows high to block his sight. They are in the Fox's element, and the advantage switches yet again.
Offense.
Third set is drawn, the plants react to the energy flowing through the blades. Petals act as his blades from afar, they attack in sequence to his slashes while he remains at a safe distance. Many hits are landed but they heal too damn fast. Makatashi be rids the grass.
Defense.
Kurama tries to pull the cover of his plants but they are quickly blasted aside as Makatashi advances slowly, sadistic grin growing ever larger on his disgusting face. Kurama is no helpless victim.
Offense.
The trees wrap around Makatashi and bite into his skin, the bark scrapes his skin raw. Kurama wills the trees to crush their prey even as he starts to stab at every show of flesh beneath the tree.
Defense.
Makatashi bursts free and shoots the spray of bark at Kurama.
Offense.
Kurama summons multiple rose whips that slice in every direction.
Defense. Makatashi burns them all and swings.
Offense. Kurama grabs his arm and flips him.
Defense. Block that high kick.
Offense. Diagonal torso, no time to check if it hit.
Defense. Block head shot.
Offense. Right punch.
Defense. Jump.
Offense. Kick.
Defense.
Offense.
Time is up.
Offense it is, and the seeds had been sewn throughout their entire little jaunt. Kurama jumps back, breaking the rhythm and, just for a moment, throwing Makatashi off balance. Shock actually etches it's way onto the man's face. The moment is all that Kurama needs and thousands of seeds burst to life all around them. A wall of plant energy makes the entire forest shudder. The energy pulsates throughout killing the animals like a sound wave. With each beat it breaks like waves over the temples barriers.
All is silent.
***
Yusuke is the first out of the temple to see the amazing scene before him. It is like the forest has gone completely primordial. It is... far too quiet. No demon, or birds, or insects... nothing but the rustle of leaves and petals. Shiori sprints past him. He grabs onto her only to receive a completely shocking and surprisingly vicious sounding growl from the petite woman. Shiori could defiantly pass as Yoko's, and not just Suuichi's Mother.
"Woah there. What are you doing?"
"Looking for my son!" The answer should have been obvious, andin the moment of looking at the forest, Yusuke had forgotten. Kurama is out in that forest and probably wounded. They waste no more time in attempting to locate him. They head straight for the thickest part of the forest, where the primordial energy is bound to have originated from. Although Hiei and Kuro are in the lead it is Shiori who spot red hair first and cries out in relief.
Kurama sits up weakly, briefly looking around for the source of the cry he heard. It doesn't take him long to spot the group of friends running toward him and he smiles. But... something isn't right. He feels as though he is neglecting something very important. His tired mind and body cannot seem to come up with the answer though.
The answer is given to him.
The solid thicket of ancient bark was supposed to forever in case its victim. Too bad it did not contain a victim this time. Pale skinny hands wrap around the Fox's neck, his friends stop advancing immediately. Any hasty movement could have their friend paralyzed... or worse. Not even Shiori dares to advance, though she doesn't resist the malicious glare sent toward the man holding her precious baby boy, oh no, that goes full force.
Kurama is in shock.
"I-It's not possible... y-y-you can't have..."
"Predicted that move? No, you are right Kit. I couldn't have predicted that move, really didn't even know you had figured out how to grow a primordial forest. Very nice, and your use was beautiful, creative to say the least. Good thing I had a bit of help with that."
Kurama's blood runs cold, who could have helped him? "Come now Kit, there is only one person who could have predicted such a move, one that knows your mind better than even their own?" No, Kurama's mind just wouldn't except that. "You found it convenient didn't you? Him showing up just when you needed him most? The comforting and protective arms of you your past to keep you stable as your little world fell down around you? Tell me Kit, which hurts worse, knowing that your beloved Kuro betrayed you, or knowing that the only one you can hate for it is yourself?"
A frustrated shriek is ripped from Kuroune's lungs and he lunges at Makatashi. "I! You bastard I'd never! Foxy don't believe..." But he is cut off as his body completely freezes just feet from Makatashi.
Kurama is looking at the ground not saying a word. Makatashi laughs. "You should know better than anyone else that the dead don't walk on their own. You knew it was strange, you suspected the truth, and yet you ignored it didn't you? Because it was Kuronue. You are right, you have his complete loyalty. The Chimera would never willingly do a thing to harm you. But we know that people can't always control what they do. His body, his thoughts, his emotions, they belong to me. I brought him back, and you know why. Tell me why."
His spirit energy is seeping out of him, the pain is leaving... why? He isn't mortally injured...
"Because Kuro knows me better than anyone... took the time to figure me out. He knows everything... every thought... every emotion... "
"That's right, and because I now own him..."
"You - " Kurama croaks, voice cracking as his masks shatter completely and hit the floor. "You own my thoughts, my emotions, my mind, my body... my... s-soul... you own m-me." The outraged cries that come from his friends do not reach his ears. Only Makatashi's cruel laugh does.
"You understand! You've accepted it! I am so very pleased with you my little kit! Isn't it beautiful!? There goes the last of your oh-so-precious hope. I own your soul, you can never escape me, not even in death. You will never be free. Do you feel it slipping away now? It's all slipping away from you. That is your spirit little Kit, you've given up, your spirit is breaking! Don't worry though." He pulls Kurama into a tight embrace instead of the choke hold he has had. "You won't have to do anything soon. You won't have to feel, to think, to decide... all you do is watch. You get to watch as I kill them all, your whole race. Every kitsune. Won't that just be beautiful?"
Kurama doesn't say anything, he doesn't have anything to say.
"Let's hear it one more time little Kit, as you spirit breaks in two."
"You..."
"Yes."
"...own..."
"YES! "
"...m - "
"FOXY!" There is a very sickening sound of splayed flesh.
Kuro, is bleeding. Straight from the heart. His own blade embedded deep in his chest.
"Don't y-you dare. See the blood? J-Just like that n-night. It. ain't. over. This blood, it's for you. See it, burn it into your memory. This is why you keep going. This is why you keep figh-" He chokes on a bit of blood. "- keep fighting. Because we died so you can live. Your Brother, your Sister, your Mother, and m-me. I'm not coming back this time, you are the only one that can keep us alive inside of you."
There it is... his strength. "K-Kuro..."
"I love you Foxy." He falls, he's gone.
***
The Fox's aura is back, and despite himself, despite the fact that Kuroune is dead... Hiei feels relief wash through him. The Fox is silent but the pain is his aura is palpable. It pulses and rolls and thrashes, spiraling higher and higher and higher, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Kurama is very much alive, even if he wishes otherwise.
Another aura is soaring, this one in anger. Kuronue's body erupts in flame, an odd sort of cremation, final rights gifted to him by the anger of his most hated enemy. Makatashi jerks Kurama, forcing him to lock eyes. "That will cost you. One more death, one more week." He raises a hand and it hums with his energy, he still stares straight into Kurama's eyes. "Say farewell to the fire demon." The energy is released and hits. The small body hits the ground. Lifeless.
