Chapter 14
The Chest

Time is an interesting thing. Although it has a constant flow, it allows itself to be perceived in many different ways. When bored, it can drag on. When having fun, time slips away too easily. Perhaps it seeks to feed the narcissism of the living, letting them believe that it speeds up or slows down according to their emotions. The dead have no perception of time. But perhaps the time when time is most disconcerting is when we loose it. There are of course several ways in which we can loose time; memory loss, oversleeping, daydreaming... or when lost in a strong emotion.

Kurama wonders how he could have lost the better part of a week.

But as he enters the temple: tired, hungry, and with Hiei on his heels. He glances at the calendar, and mentally groans. He knows it is right. Makatashi is nothing if not consistent. He will return in two days. Kurama will kill him then. A time ago is would have been out of fear. Later anger, then revenge. But now, now the reason is his best yet, and there is not an ounce of personal emotion attached to it. Kurama must kill Makatashi because he is a threat to the entire universe. If he continues to live he will cause unnamed amounts of damage and pain throughout all three worlds. The pain will no longer be limited to his family. Kurama has a responsibility to keep it within the family. Strange that he hasn't felt this familial loyalty to him vixen Mother for very many years now, yet it is as strong as ever.

He studiously avoids his Mother until he is cleaned up, heading straight for the bath. The hot water almost makes him fall asleep. He climbs out as soon as he is clean and dresses in fresh clothing. Then he heads for what he really wants most. His Mother of course, but almost as importantly, the food that she would provide. Hunger is a terrible thing. He hasn't been this hungry in a long, long time.

Shiori sweeps him into a hug as soon as he walks in the kitchen/dining room. Genkai isn't one much for vanity, her living style is simple. He sits down and she starts to set food in front of him. She's already coerced Hiei into eating three plates of food, the little fire demon across the table looks stuffed. Hiei can eat a lot when he actually does eat, but Shiori has learned to pile the food high for him and she even manages to reach Hiei's eating limits. It amuses Kurama to no end that his Mother has become so fond of his best friend.

It amuses him even more that Hiei has grown so fond of his Mother. He listens to her the same as he does Yukina, though minus the sibling familiarity.

He eats what he can of what Shiori puts in front of him; rice, vegetables doused in soy sauce, Inari-zushi, fresh fruit... it seems endless. She knew all his favorites. He surprised them both with his appetite, normally his consumption is limited. He needs to keep his figure trim for his fighting style and any extra weight is simply not tolerated. Yusuke had told him on more than one occasion that he is as thin as a twig and can snap just as easy if he didn't start eating 'right'. He usually replies something akin to, 'If you think that's true then why not prove it?' Which is usually enough to start a sparring match that distracts the rest of the team from his finicky eating habits... at least for a little while.

For a little while, he puts the thoughts plaguing him aside and enjoys himself.

***
His peaceful moment comes to an abrupt halt as the group moves into the living room area. Sitting on the table, right where he had left it is the chest. Simple wood, elegantly engraved, containing very important items, and very painful memories. The most recent washes over him first as he unconsciously takes a slow step toward the table.

Kuroune's death. Yes, Kuroune is dead, has been dead. That fact is not denied, questioned, refuted, or in any other way undermined. Kuronue has given up his life to save Kurama's twice now. It is the emotions he attaches to that, that are the problem.

Kuronue was, yes was, his partner. Kuronue always had his back through traps and scuffles, fights and wounds, thick and thin. They knew each others attacks inside and out. While Kuroune was a good partner, he has Hiei to cover his back now. This cannot be the extent of what he feels. He takes another step.

Kuroune was his caretaker. Whenever Kurama could not stand on his own, Kuroune carried him. Even though Kurama had to talk him through bandaging and complex healing remedies most of the time, Kurounue healed Kurama's wounds. Kuroune watched over him while he was injured. This job fell to his friends and family now, this cannot be the extent of what he feels. He takes another step.

Kuronue was his friend. Kuronue listened to his fears, listened to everything Kurama said, and had tried to give him hope when the kitsune had none. In a way, Kurama still doesn't know how to hope properly. Kuroune gave Kurama the same, in way of his own fears, hopes, and dreams. Kuroune was capable of hopes and dreams. He gave Kurama his past and in turn, listened to what he could pry out of Kurama. He worried over, gave nicknames to, teased, and cherished the kitsune. But Kurama has other friends now, this cannot be the extent of what he feels. He takes another step.

Kuroune was his lover. Kurama has had tons of lovers. Men and women, creatures of all different species, though not since taking his human form. He's been far too busy. Of course that was sex, a lover is different. He'd laid in Kuroune's arms and allowed himself to sleep. A sort of trust in sharing his body and soul and receiving Kuroune's in exchange. That bond runs deep. That is the bond of a lover, you do not share your soul with, or let your guard down around one you merely have sex with. Even still, he has had other lover's, so this cannot be the extent of what he feels. He takes another step.

Now, this last feeling. It has taken a long time but now he knows what it is. Kurama loves Kuroune. For all the things he was, and all the things he wasn't. Kuronue loved Kurama as well. He had tried to make the fox understand and Kurama had not wanted to understand. He pushed everyone else away because it was easy, the easy way out. Kurama is a coward.

He takes one last step. There, in front of him is the chest. The chest that Kuroune traversed Maikai to bring him, tackled some of the most vicious plants in all three worlds, and drug hundreds of miles, without a second though simply because Kurama needed it. He feels his knees give out. Kuronue had tried to make him understand for centuries, and even now he is still running away. Even after Kuroune's death he would not listen to the message Kuro wished to impart. He can be loved, and love. Makatashi cannot control that. He is loved. He does love.

With that admission his composure breaks and the tears slide down his face. "Mother I am such a fool. Surely I was not so idiotic in your care?" His head drops right onto the metal clasp. Shori starts, thinking he'll hurt himself. Everything is still but for the tears sliding down Kurama's face.

Then the softest voice accompanies a blurred silver form that envelops Kurama.

"Oh my precious little kit, what ever makes you think that I have left you? That I ever left you?"

***
Shori blinks a few times, unsure if what she is seeing is real. A woman, tall, silver, beautiful... a kitsune, has wrapped her Suuichi is a tight hug... but she isn't tangible!

"I have never hated or left you, not even after you sealed your heart and I could not reach you. I have stayed. I love you. I can teach you now, a lesson you were not mature enough to understand the last time I held you like this. I am so happy that your heart has opened up again; your Kuroune is a miracle worker. I liked him from the start."

Suuichi chokes a bit.

"I want you to cry for him Yoko. Mourn the loss of your first love. I say first because, there will be others. The world does not stop for a single death, and your world must not stop for his. He was not the one to spend eternity with you, and just because he still has your love does not mean you cannot make more. You can always make more. No one can replace your feelings for him, but he can't be the only one you give your feelings to. Do you understand me?"

Suuichi nods.

"Good. You always were my little genius. You were controlling your powers before any of your siblings. I remember watching Rika's amazed face as you helped her rose's bloom. Inari blessed you because she is proud of you. Rika is proud of you, and I am proud of you. I hear the whispers of the dead, those that came before us. We are proud, we know you are strong. My little Yoko, you have the entire family to support you. Never forget that we are with you, the family, the whole family." Suuichi looks up, resting a hand on his own shoulder, as it went right through her hand, and leaned back into his... Mother. His eyes have dried, and a small smile tugs at his lips.

"Yes Mother. I do not know how I could have forgotten."

It is her turn to smile now. "You never really did." She vanishes, like fog on a sunny day. But Shiori knows that she is not truly gone, as does one other in the room, who is taking tentative steps toward her son.

Boton approaches Kurama slowly, not liking the task that she knows she has to perform. She steps right up next to him and waits for those emerald pools, so different from what she is used to, turn to her.

"Kurama, I... that is... your Mother... she needs to move on." Green orbs blink, asking her to continue. "I need to take her soul."

She regrets those words. Anger boils up, turning emerald to acid. He snarls and she steps back. "You can't have her! If you wanted to take her soul why didn't you do it when she needed you to!? Now when she is finally settled in for eternity you wish to take her!? I was the one that rescued her from the pits when he stole her!"

Boton is shocked as he wraps a protective arm behind him, around the chest, his stance is highly protective. Kurama has never behaved so, he is always quite rational. What is with the sudden anger? Even if he didn't want to give her up... he wouldn't lash out. Surely he knew that this is what is best!?

"Boton, I highly suggest you cease and desist before he tears you in two." Boton turns to see Koenma come up from the back of the group, a highly serious expression on his face. "We have no jurisdiction over kitsune souls, what is right for others is not always what is best for them. Please forgive her Kurama, for a shinigami, she is still very young and doesn't understand. She has no idea what she is asking of you." Boton turn back to Kurama to see most of the anger dispelled.

"My apologies, she is so talented, I forget her inexperience sometimes." His arm does not loosen from the chest.

"Completely understandable, I forget myself sometimes. Why not help her to understand hm? You haven't donned your Mother's protective embrace for quite some time if I am not mistaken." Koenma is choosing his words very carefully, she realizes. What major fas paux had she committed?

"Not since your Father decided to kill me." Kurama admits quietly. He turns to the chest, keeping himself between it and Boton. His hand reach the clasp and open it with no burn this time. the lid flips open, and laying on top is a beautiful katana. Kurama slips it into his waist band and picks up the rose underneath it carefully. He removes the rose from his hair and sets it in the chest, then places the new rose into his hair. He pushes on the bottom and it clicks open to reveal a rolled set of tools, much like the ones that Kurama has lost in the forest. These are made of pure silver roses engraved into the hilt in such a manner that it looks as though it would form perfectly to Kurama's hand. He ties them to his waist and reaches in again. The last item is a beautiful silver cloak. It has to be expensive, perhaps the finest fabric she has ever...

That's not fabric...

... it's fur.

Fox fur. The head is sitting on Kurama's shoulder, he is nuzzling it?

That's when she feels the soul emerge again, she is wrapping her arms around his shoulders and resting her cheek against his hair. The image is fleeting but it lingers. Kurama's vixen Mother is embracing him, bound to her skin.

Kurama's eyes look to hers. "You cannot have her! She protects me and I her. She's stronger and more valuable than any armor and nothing can hurt me in her embrace!" With that he leaves. Boton does not understand. Is she a fixated soul? Why would Kurama encourage her to remain fixated?

He leaves the room.

Koenmma sighs is relief. "She is not fixated Boton. Kurama is right though, nothing can hurt him so long as he wears her skin. How else would the man survive a rain of arrows that often follows him from a fortress? They bounce right off. I told you that kitsune are different. We do not control the kitsune because they are Inari's favorites. She rules them directly. To separate that woman from him before she is ready would surely destroy her, if not both of them." A stream of fear flows through Boton at that.

"Kurama is a wonderful example of a kitsune. He is brilliant, naturally intuitive, wild, untamable, unbroken, and follows only the will of Inari. While this brings him into conflict with us, it strengthens his soul. Every time he steals a painting, or rescues a friend, his soul grows stronger. These are good things under Inari's law. Think about it, he was able to fight off hundreds of kitsune hunters while defending Kuroune, but later, after he sealed his heart, could not fight off one bounty hunter.

Family is the most important thing. Even after death, there is a need to protect one's own. Her skin was ripped from her body, and her soul tried to cling to it, thus, she wound up in the skin instead of her body. This is usually what happens to skinned kitsune. It probably took Kurama centuries to recover his Mother from the fur traders, but his persistence must have strengthened him greatly. Kitsune do not do well without family, and each passing moment without, kills their soul just a bit more. When blood relatives are not available they welcome others into the 'family'. Kurama has deemed his, partners. Later, while human, they became friends. If you were not part of Kurama's family Boton, he would have killed you.

If you were to take her to Reikai, she would be separated from her son, from any family. She would be destroyed in a matter of months. Kurama's power would drop dramatically and his behavior would become careless and erratic. He could be saved, but it would be difficult. She can only move on when her son has a stable family of his own, at such time, the rest of the family will call for her. Don't worry, I think the time is close. He has accepted most of us as family, once he is more stable in his feelings, understands them a bit better, she will be summoned. Until then you must not move to separate them. Do you understand?"

"Y-Yes Koenma." He nods and claps her on the shoulder.

"Don't worry, the incident is already passed. Let's get back to talking about this forest!"

Chatter resumes. Boton will never forget though, the memory of a shinigami is long.

A/N: Posting will be irregular until fate decides to stop messing with me. First holidays, then my internet, and now bronchitis! Please hang in there.

Kurama loves Kuroune. Before you 'well duh!' me, I need to explain that he never realized that he felt love for him as more than a friend and lover, not as a soul mate. You see? Kurama was denying himself that.

He sealed his heart, not to say that certain people *cough*Shiori*cough* didn't break through, but that is why he couldn't open the chest of speak to his Mother, not because she hated him.

The items in the chest will be explained as we go.

Boton/Koenma explains itself.
