Chapter 17
Chase

Shiori feels the hand in her hair tighten. The man's breath ghosts over her cheek. Across the field is her eldest son, red hair as perfect as ever. Just behind him, Hiei is looking as bored as ever - even though his hand is resting on the hilt of his blade, eyes locked on Makatashi; an old fashioned stare down. Botan lay in a crumbled heap, Yukina rushes over to try and help her while the girls Keiko and Shizuru try to keep her husband from attacking the brute to free her.

She can't help but feel, pray, this is like some sort of movie. After all, stuff like this isn't supposed to happen in real life! In the movies there are no bad endings. The brave son does battle with the evil guy to rescue his darling Mother. The clever hostages find ways to help the hero. The hero's best friend fights bravely and gets the clever hostages to safety as the final fight ensues. The Mother sits and waits worriedly in the arms of her husband. In the end, the bad guy dies and the hero, her son, gets the girl... er... guy. The Mother embraces the son as he walks in, exhausted but satisfied from the fight and tells him she's proud before handing him over with her blessings to his love interest. Then there are weddings, and babies, and happily ever after!

But her son's love interest has already died. The hostages here are powerless against this man and her son has already lost to him twice now. Her husband can do nothing, their enemy is worse than in any movie. This isn't like the movies, and the 'bad guy' can kill her easily, just to bring her son more pain. So what does a Mother do?

Where is the happily ever after?

***
Kurama soon can't stand it anymore, so he walks forward almost casually. Makatashi stiffens, and Kurama knows that his masks seem to be working. Makatashi doesn't know what to think because he doesn't know what Kurama is thinking. About 20 ft. away his grip on Shiori tightens, a warning for Kurama to cease and desist. He does of course but from here he can read things more accurately. He notes absently that Hiei has disappeared in to the trees, no doubt waiting for just the right moment to strike.

Makatashi seems to consider his words carefully before speaking. When he does, his words are soft and low. "Do you recognize this place little kit?"

Naturally, how would it be possible to forget the site of his Mothers death? The clearing in front of the cave that he spent his youth in, it is forever burned into every nightmare he has. The plants he tended as a child have grown wild, taking over the deadened area. Feeding off the life he gave them so long ago. Just past Makatashi are the echoes of the laughter shared in those cave walls, and just under his feet, an area of no life, the place where his Mother's blood soaked the ground.

How unwitting of Makatashi, Kurama realizes, to give him the home field advantage. The plants here still respond to his touch. Not to mention his family has lived in this area for ages, died in this area for ages. Did Makatashi think that the emotional wounds of this place would hinder him? Or did Makatashi do this on purpose to give him a false sense of security?

"Yes, I do." The words are calm and cool, meant to try and comfort his Mother; still held up by her hair. He wants to convey to her that he is in control of the situation, even if it isn't the exact truth... or anything close to the truth.

"Then you know what I plan to do." A small smile quirks at the corners of his lips. It is obvious, irony, a showman's tactic in battle. So Makatashi is getting back to the basics now that he has lost his major advantage over me. But Kurama is still thinking on the higher levels, and won't take his Mother's death in stride.

"Indeed. But you won't do that now. You want to make me beg, which I am not ready to do. So put her down and let's fight like we are supposed to." Makatashi's smirk turns into a frown, he hadn't expected that response, at all. For that miniscual moment, while in shock, he drops his guard. It is missed by most, but not by the person who is waiting for it. The person that Kurama knows he can count on.

Hiei uses the moment to rush in and take off Makatashi's hand; the hand holding Shiori in the air. Utilizing his speed, Hiei grabs Shiori and gets her away from the hunter before he can react. Kurama follows up with a very nice swipe of his dagger to the chest, which is unfortunately blocked, but the plan was effective.

Go Hiei!

***
... and the fight begins. Yukina thinks absently as she heals the wound on Botan's head. As soon as she can she starts moving the grim reaper away from the fight. Her brother rescued Shiori and dropped her off with Kazuya, Keiko, and Shizuru. They run over to help, getting as far away from the fight as possible. Soon even the sounds of the battle fade and a large river comes into view. Yukina takes water and makes it colder then splashes it on Botan, who sits up immediately.

"What happened?" She looks as clueless as ever, and the small kooromie can't help the surge of emotion that shoots through her. She tackles Botan in a hug and tries not to cry. Botan slowly puts things back together when she spots Shiori.

"Look, Kurama and Hiei are fighting him right? We need to get a hold of Yusuke and Kuwabara. We need to let them know where we are. Only, my communicator is a pile of useless scrap now!"

Shizuru lights up a cigarette, her nerves are shot. "Botan, you can get to spirit world any time you want. Use that paddle of yours and go already!" Botan screws up her face.

"WHAT!? I can't leave a bunch of humans and a kooromie here all alone in Makai! There's no way all of you can fit on! Really-!" Shizuru cuts her off before she can come up with any more reasons that the idea is absolutely ludicrous.

"A bunch of humans maybe. But not ordinary humans. Plus we have a large number, we can be safer together. There are bigger issues right now. Kurama may not be worried about what happens should he die, but personally, famine in the three worlds for who knows how long does not sound like fun to me. Humans and demons are getting along for once and I don't think that the humans would like it if demons started to see them as a food source again. Let us take care of ourselves and go get help ok? We'll be here."

Botan is speechless for a moment but nods solemnly before pulling out her oar. "You better be safe when I get back!" Then she takes off. Shizuru drops her finished cigarette and grinds it out, then exhales the last wisp of smoke slowly.

"You guys get up and ready to run. I neglected to mention to Botan that there is a very large force of demons coming our way, probably Makatashi's back up." Kazuya sputters indignantly.

"Why in all the - !"

Shizuru glares at him. "Because she wouldn't have left. I was serious about the famine thing! Genkai once told me that Inari's messengers are her connection to our world. She's the goddess of fertility and agriculture. Do you know what happens if she can't reach us for a while? No kids, no food, no alliance between the worlds. Kurama and Hiei need Yusuke and my bro. Now run!" With that they all take off in the opposite direction that the demons are coming from. Following Shizuru's lead.

***
The fight is going similar to the previous ones. No matter how much damage is inflicted, Makatashi merely heals himself. It is frustrating Hiei to no end. Kurama wouldn't go into battle without a means of defeating that so Hiei holds his ground. The fox has already lost one set of daggers; but Kurama seems somewhat distracted to him. The Fox's eyes keep straying to an earring on Makatashi's left earlobe. Are his thief instincts kicking in? No, the fox has a better hold on his kleptomania than that.

It is a deep purple stone, attached to his ear by a... well somehow. It happens to be the same color as his eyes. Just out of curiosity, Hiei makes his next strike to the side of the head, burning off the entire ear, and the earring. He isn't surprised when the ear grows back... but so does the earring. So that's the secret, and part of the Fox's plan no doubt.

No wonder he kept discreetly eying it.

The plan, in and of itself is of course, is up to the Fox. After all, if Hiei can't destroy it, then he really has no idea on how to get rid of it. But the Fox probably knows everything about that stone, so until then, Hiei does what he is best at.

Wreak havoc.

Kurama knew Hiei got the message when he burned off Makatashi's ear. He'd been trying to tell Hiei non verbally for a while that the earring was the source of the regeneration. That is a long story though. One he hopes to get to tell them. When Hiei goes from cautious inquisitor mode, to smash and destroy mode Kurama gets the opportunity to drop back and reassess.

His Mother and the others had run for safety as soon as the fight started. But his worry would not subside. Makatashi always has his crowd of minion hunters to back him up, and Kurama had yet to see them. With all the demonic energy in the air, it is difficult to garner anything from his higher senses. It isn't until the piercing scream cuts through the haze of battle that their location becomes clear. Kurama shoots Hiei a worried glance and they both know what needs to be done.

Kurama picks up the slack again, pulling out his third set of daggers as he sheathes the second set alongside the first and Hiei runs toward his sister and the others.

***
Keiko is the one to break silence. The beasts had been creeping closer and closer to them from the beginning. They were toying with their prey. Forever and a moment later they finally caught up. Keiko was in the middle of the group. Despite being a demon, Yukina was in a kimono and geta, which made her the slowest runner in the group. She is the first one grabbed. Keiko can't stand the sight of her friend being crushed in the grip of that beast, and she does not scream herself. Keiko screams for her.

"YUKINA!"

No sooner had the scream left her throat then the beast recoiled in pain, dropping the small kooromie girl. His entire arm, all the way to the elbow is frozen solid. It is then that Keiko remembers, Yukina is not as tiny and fragile as she seems most of the time. She is one of Genkai's pupils, Hiei's brother, and a demon in her own right. Hardly defenseless.

Shiori is already pulling her up and they are running again. But still not quick enough. Not that it matters, they were already surrounded. The demons around snicker and sneer. Vulgar threats and vile suggestions float around. Shizuru is the first to move. She picks up a large tree branch as one of them attacks her and smacks him over the head. She takes his weapon and tosses it to Keiko. Keiko picks it up and in turn takes out another while Yukina keeps the larger ones at bay. Soon everyone has at least one weapon and their backs are together. They are far from winning, but at the moment not dieing.

Better than they could hope for.

***
By the time Hiei arrives, even with his speed, the area is just a mass of bodies. He would have unleashed a large attack if he didn't know they were right in the center of it all. So he makes a smaller attack, and aims off to the side, incinerating a large portion of the group and getting him a great deal closer to the center. After fifty or so more kills he spots his sister, and it isn't long before he is amongst them. They look relieved, well, other than the oaf's older sister. With another large blast he gives them a way out.

Hiei picks up his sister and they make remarkably faster time than before. Any demons that do manage to catch up are quickly incinerated, frozen, or beaten to a pulp and left in a bloody mess. No mercy. Funny coming from the supposed good guys but hey, Hiei and Shizuru don't set the same example as Kuwabara now do they?

Hiei decides to head back toward Kurama. The humans couldn't be left on their own, and from what the oaf's sister mentioned as they were running, the bubble headed idiot had gone for back up. Hiei was mildly impressed by the human's boldness, but, of course, would never admit it. Hiei didn't want to leave his partner to fight on his own and Makatashi wouldn't want his minions interfering with his fight anyway.

As they pushed into the clearing Hiei felt the same strange energy again.Kurama is performing that strange attack. Hiei's perception of the movement is confused; somehow, Makatashi manages to move. Hiei has never felt so sick in his whole life, the motion seemed to last forever until Makatashi was kicked out of the frey. Kurama falls toward the ground, exhausted.

Hiei rushes over, lifting Kurama in one swift movement with the humans behind him and runs for the nearest cover; which happened to be the cave. Hiei is fairly confident of his ability to guard the entrance until Kurama recovered some energy from the environment. As he sets the kitsune down he drops something while muttering under his breath. A wall of energy blockades the entrance. Then Hiei realizes what Kurama dropped...

Makatashi's earring.
