Chapter 16
Divide and Conquer

There is no one to wake them before dawn. He wakes up anyway, he expected to see her standing over him with a bucket a water telling him that he's a lazy idiot. She'd have that gray hair, once bright pink. Her brown eyes as bright as they had been 50 years previous, piercing and fierce, but know they hold wisdom as well. She's short, she's mean, she's... she's... not there.

It is when Yusuke realizes that, that he knows the cold chills are not from the bucket of ice water she usually wakes him with, but from the lack of it.

Genkai is gone. The thought hits him before he can block it, and it's a knife in his chest. He can't breathe. She'd call him and idiot... a fool... she was an old crone that did nothing that picked on him... and... and...

... and he misses her. He loves his teacher. She was perhaps one of the few people that ever understood him. She's gone.

The man responsible for her death is coming today. He is coming to kill yet another of the people he has come to love; possibly more than one. Yusuke cannot allow him to do that. Makatashi cannot take anymore of his friends away. Somewhere the damned old crone is smiling wickedly at him as he gets out bed on his own before dawn. For some reason, that thought makes it easier to breathe.

He isn't surprised to see Hiei and Kurama conversing quietly in the kitchen when he approaches. Kuwabara groggily helping Yukina with her morning chores seems normal too. Kurama stops and looks at him as he enters, offering a small smile. "Good morning Yusuke, did you sleep well?" Polite, conscientious, and insufferably... Kurama. Yusuke might have grunted something about getting up too damn early in response but he is distracted by the relief that flows through him at the simple comment. Yusuke wonders if Kurama can really be this calm and cheery or if he has simply regained control over his emotions. Either way, Kurama is back to being Kurama, which means that he's alright, he's ready for this.

"Hn, about time." Hiei and his biting comments as usual. A typical glare and nod of the head is all he usually gets from the fire demon. Hiei must be in a talkative mood this morning. Perhaps it is the rush at knowing such a battle is coming, he seems almost hyper for Hiei; moving every 30 seconds or so, only slightly, but Hiei is normally perfectly still.

Kuwabara stumbles in from the other room, looking like he's just gotten out of bed and carrying a tray for Yukina. He just doesn't know when to quit, but then again, with Hiei for an older brother it's going to take someone like Kuwabara to win her over... without being burned to a crisp. Good thing for him he is completely honorable or he would already be burnt to a smear of black ash.

Things are normal, peaceful, calm. How is this possible when everyone knows what is to come? Really, a huge evil dude is coming to destroy their world that they have no idea how to beat!

Then it hits Yusuke and he starts to laugh. He falls over laughing and they looks at him strangely but it's a few minutes before he calms down. "Oh man, a huge evil dude is coming to destroy our world that we have no idea how to beat and we're just sitting here like it's normal... and it is! I mean the four saint beasts, Tuguro, Sensei, Yomi... this is pretty damn old hat." It's quiet for a moment. Dead silent. Then slowly, Kurama started to chuckle, and Kuwabara joined in, hell even Hiei and it wasn't long before they were all busting at the seams.

Yukina tilts her head to the side as Kurama's family comes up from behind with Keiko and Botan. Their brave hero's are busy clutching their sides in laughter. Feeling a bit lost they look around to see if anyone else, or the room itself, can provide an explanation. Botan looks to Yukina. "What's so funny?"

"I'm not quite sure, something about old hats." Yukina smiles anyway and offers the newcomers tea.

***
This time they are prepared for Makatashi; mainly because he does not attack directly at dawn. The group manages to set up a perimeter around the temple. Yusuke had tried to convince Keiko and Kurama's family that they needed to leave but they weren't having it. Even Yusuke knows to back down when facing both an angry Keiko, and Shiori in Mother mode.

Kurama was of course the one to suggest that they set up the territory to their advantage before Makatashi arrived. Good old Kurama, always the strategist of the group. Yusuke doesn't know what they would do without him. Yet another reason they simply cannot afford to loose today, it is becoming quite the staggering list. Yusuke has to wonder if this is the kind of pressure Kurama feels before every fight.

Meh. Yusuke must be Yusuke and let Kurama be Kurama. After all, Kurama is much better at being Kurama than Yusuke could ever hope to be.

Vice versa is true as well.

That is just the way these things work. Yusuke spots Kuwabara a bit off in the trees as their courses overlap. Seems nothing has happened yet. Kurama and Hiei must be meeting up on the other side of the temple right about now. Kuwabara raises his hand in greeting and Yusuke feels a grin form.

Too bad such moments never last.

Both of their heads snap to the side as they feel a portal open up. Lower class demons come swarming through, the brainless ones that couldn't follow Enki's order for simple lack of the mental prowess to do so. They normally can't get through the portals.

"How much you want to bet this is to distract us?" The first wave is decimated by a shotgun blast.

"Not taking that one Urameshi."

***
On the other side of the temple Hiei is about to run toward the huge surge of demonic energy when Kurama grabs his shoulder.

"Distraction technique, let us not abandon our post. This is why I set up the field this way. We need to get over to the temple, that will be the next target."

Hiei nods and they take off, reaching the temple just as the second portal opens. Yukina, Botan, Keiko, and Kurama's family are all sucked in. Kurama dives in after them with out a second thought; Hiei after only a moments hesitation.

The trip is quicker than usual but they see no sign of their group. Hiei lands next to Kurama in what looks like the dead part of a very old forest. Hiei looks up to Kurama's dead emotionless face for an answer. "You hesitated. It gave him time to switch the portal's destination just enough. Not long enough to make a huge difference however, they are near by. We need to find them as quickly as possible, but mind that Makatashi knows our exact location."

Hiei nods, no time to place blame or feel guilt at the moment. That's not how it's ever been between them anyway. Hiei takes the lead as is his role and Kurama follows behind. Hiei's quick reflexes respond better to hidden traps and Kurama's sharp instincts detect sneak attacks. The position also sets them up for some of their best tactics in difficult situations. While Makatashi may have studied them as partners he didn't know their entire history, Kuronue wasn't privy to that. This is their best defense for whatever Makatashi might decide to throw at them because this way no one can make assumptions too far ahead.

Effectively cuffing both Kurama and Makatashi. A double edged sword if you will. Kurama's strategic weapon of choice.

They move through the area slowly with Kurama extending himself to what plant life is around. He is astonished at how quickly and willingly they respond to him, like old friends. Even in the dead part of a forest there is life, the planet itself teeming at every inch with nature's bounty. Not even the humans, with their concrete and plastic can stop the simple sunflower that grows up through the cracks. Still, something seems far too familiar about this place, and with Makatashi being the one to pick it, Kurama is sure he isn't going to like the answer.

Hiei picks up on Yukina's heat signature, or lack there of just as our beloved kitsune catches a whiff of his Mother. Kurama almost looses control to the impulse to run straight toward her, but catches himself at the last moment. Hiei shoots him a worried glance before they continue slowly toward their destination. A small clearing up ahead seems to be the place, as they enter it is like a bucket of ice water on the fox's soul.

***
Botan had been the one to calm the others as they went through the portal. It has been a while since this happened to the others and is still disconcerting to some. When they land in the small clearing she instantly pulls out her communicator to signal to the others where they landed. It is quickly crushed along with all the bones in her hand. Makatashi drops her.

"Now, now, What fun is it if you give my little kit all of the answers? He'll have to find you on his own." Makatashi smirks widely as he shifts his attention to Shiori. "If it isn't the lovely Shiori, second Mother to my kit. You will prove most useful in my mind games today, after all it isn't everyone who gets to see both of their Mother's die in the same place... if you're lucky, I won't kill you the same way."

Botan jumps to her feet and steps in between them. "You can't do that! Kurama will never let you!"

Makatashi narrows his eyes at her before batting her aside. He grabs Shiori by the hair and holds her up, turning just as the awaited pair emerges into the clearing.

His kit's face is blank. Not what is expected, perhaps this will truly be the fight he has been waiting for.

A/N: Whew! Final's are over, the semester is over, and I finally have enough breathing room to write again. For your patience, I made this chapter extra long, and I promise that it won't take me another month and a half to post the next chapter. We are actually closing in on the end of the story here.

Let's see, aside the comic relief in the beginning... Yukina can be so cute! We have the start of, I promise, the last fight! This one is decisive.

Yusuke and Kuwabara are stuck in the human world fighting off hordes of mindless drones so that they don't cause trouble in the human world. Poo for those of you that wanted to see Yusuke tear Makatashi apart for killing Genkai... or see Kuwabara fawn over saving Yukina.

The rest of the group has been sucked into Makai. Someone brought up an interesting point that Maikai air is toxic to normal humans. Well normal is the operative word here. If Maya can be so deeply affected by Kurama's presence then I am assuming that Keiko, Shiori, Suu-chan, and Kazuya can at least survive the air considering how much time they have spent now, around more than one incredibly high powered demon.

Anyway, kudos to anyone who has figured out where in makai they are.
