Chapter Four: Make Somebody Happy (Kurama)

It has been a year since that day you watched Kenji go. You had stood there, even after Kenji disappeared, for a few hours, remembering all you had gone through with Kenji and hoping you did the right thing. You hoped he was making somebody happy right now. Every night you slept in trees and every day you traveled to a new area. You had wandered from Kyoto Japan and became a Rurouni. You were traveling with no destination. You had become rather thin but you made sure you didn't get too skinny by stealing as much food as you could without getting noticed. No one ever did catch you, and as far as you know there were no reported thefts.

Now you were sitting in a tree, fingering you locket that had the picture of you and your little brother in it. `Exactly a year.' You thought. `I wonder what Kenji's doing. Does he remember me? Is he making his new family happy? Is he in a loving home?' You let your thoughts wander for a few minutes before snapping back to reality. You were making your way to Tokyo. You didn't have a reason, but you've always wanted to see it, so why not? You climbed out of the tree and made sure you had everything in your backpack. You hadn't grown at all in one year and you didn't need new clothes. You were usually able to look innocent and pretend that you had forgotten your change and get some sympathy from an elderly lady or something, so you didn't smell all of the time.

After making sure you had everything, you zipped your bag and headed for Tokyo. This was going to be interesting.

(((A Few Days Later)))

You had found Tokyo and you were looking around. You didn't grab any attention by passerby as you looked like a regular teenager wandering the streets. You were glad for this and saw a food store. You heard your stomach rumble and you frowned. Guess you had to shoplift again. You walked into the store and made sure there were no security cameras or special alarms for shoplifters. After convincing yourself there was none, you got a pre-made sandwich and casually put it in your front pocket and pretended like you didn't see anything interesting. Shrugging and grumbling about how you couldn't find anything you liked, you left the store, undetected. You stopped grumbling and broke into a relieved smile. You knew one of these days you were going to get caught…but you needed to eat.

Walking away from the store you walked for a little bit before you saw a rather large school building. You looked at the name and shrugged. `Meiou High', nothing too interesting about that. You took out your sandwich and started to eat it, feeling rather hungry. You heard the bell ring and saw students exiting from the building. You frowned and leaned against the wall, hiding in the shadows. You didn't feel like getting surrounded by giggling schoolgirls. You observed some of the guys and shrugged. Nothing special.

Then you saw a guy with beautiful long red hair and strikingly handsome emerald-eyes. The color of his eyes reminded you of your brother. Shaking your head, you decided to keep touring the area. What were the chances you were going to see him again anyway? But…

Deciding that it was no big deal, you started to casually follow him, at a distance of course. Just because you probably never would have the guy didn't mean you couldn't look, right?

You followed him to an apartment building and frowned when he entered. You couldn't see him now. Shrugging, you started to turn your back when you saw the door open again and the boy came out, followed by three people. One was a rather tall not-very good looking boy with curled orange hair, another person following was a very tall girl with long, light brown hair and light brown eyes and the last person was a five year old boy with black hair and green eyes.

`Kenji…' You thought and immediately hid in a nearby alleyway. He didn't need to see you, not after he had found a home. Instead, you climbed a ladder onto a roof and proceeded to observe the group from there. For some reason, you could hear them from the distance, though you didn't think much of it.

"Onee-chan, can we go to the park?" You felt unwanted tears force there way to your eyes but you held them back stubbornly. You thought you had gotten over this…you were wrong. You missed him calling you Onee-chan, and now he had a new Onee-chan, one that took your place. "Please? (Your name)-chan used to take be to the park all of the time!" You smiled. At least he didn't forget you. Yet…

You shook your head. Kenji was happy, that's all that mattered, right? You went back to listening and watching them, jumping from rooftop to rooftop as they headed for the park. Needless to say, it was actually kind of fun! You were only able catch little clips and snippets of the conversation going on below.

`Ok…the girls Shizuru and emerald-eyes is Kurama…and I'm confused. Is the orange-haired guy Kazuma or Kuwabara?' You thought to yourself, irritated that you didn't know his name. `Kurama is just a friend of theirs and Kenji seems to think he is awesome.' You jumped to the next rooftop then looked at Kurama. `Well…' You continued to think. `He is good-looking…' You shook your head. `Don't think about that.' You growled in your head.

You saw the park coming up ahead and picked up the past and climbed down the side of the building as fast as you could, getting a few stares but everyone immediately shrugged it off, probably thinking something like `Teenagers'. You bolted for a different park entrance and quickly climbed a tree, waiting for a few minutes before seeing Kurama and the others pass by a few trees ahead. You made sure they wouldn't be able to see you or hear you before following them as quietly as you could. They stopped by a lake and Shizuru and Kuwabara took Kenji swimming, while Kurama just watched from the edge and started to do his homework (it looked like homework…all you could see was math symbols).

You watched for around half an hour. Kenji was having a blast and he didn't look like he would tire anytime soon, and neither did Shizuru or Kuwabara (you decided to go with that name). You were contentedly sitting on the tree, dangling your legs and leaning your head on the trunk.

"You can come over here if you want." Kurama's voice said and you nearly fell out of your tree. "Are you shy?" He turned his head to look at you.

"Umm…" You stared at your brother. No matter how much you loved him…it might be better if he didn't see you again…especially now. You shook your head.

"Why won't you sit down? We're not going to attack you." Kurama laughed and your first thought surprised you.

`I like his laugh.' You shook your head. `Not now.' "Sorry. I better get going now." You said and stood up on the tree branch. "Thanks for inviting me though." You smiled briefly before turning around and bolting from the tree and away from the area. You heard an upset cry and froze. That sounded like Kenji. You came back, this time staying farther away from Kurama.

"My necklace (Your-name)-chan gave me! It's gone!" You looked worriedly at Kenji. "She gave it to me…" He started to dive for it. Kuwabara and Shizuru looked at each other and dived underwater. Shizuru came up holding the chain of the locket. Kenji came up and hugged her. "Thank you Onee-chan!" He said and Shizuru looked at the remaining locket around his neck, along with the one in her hand.

"Let's give them to Kurama until you stop swimming, all right?" She said and Kenji nodded. Shizuru got both of the bracelets and waded towards Kurama. "Kenji's going to have a heart-attack if he loses another one." She said and he nodded, taking the lockets in his hand. "His sister gave them to him. I don't know how, because he said she gave them to him before he found the police…but…anyway." Shizuru turned and walked back to Kuwabara and Kenji.

"I know you're there." Kurama said and you glared lightly at him. "Why don't you come over here?" You very much wanted to, but…you looked at Kenji. No.

"Sorry. Umm…please don't tell Kenji you saw me here." You said and started to walk off, only turning back once. He had opened one of the lockets and was staring at the picture inside. He looked your way and you locked eyes with him for a brief second before continuing on. `Well…now Kurama knows.' You sighed in your head. `I really hope he doesn't mention me to Kenji.'
