Chapter 2: Hiding from the Truth (Kurama's POV)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I had woken up at six in the morning as the old saying goes, “Early to bed, early to rise.” I rubbed the sleep out of my emerald green eyes, thinking of the fight yesterday. Roto had no right to use my mother to do as he wished. And I knew Andrea wanted to get in the ring to help, but then it would have been for nothing. In truth, I really hadn't been able to thank her for not getting in the ring.

Before we had left the stadium, we had looked into the stands and saw Toguro and his elder brother. Those two, we knew, but as for the tall figure in black, I did not know. Another of Toguro's teammates, perhaps? I couldn't forget the look in his violet eyes, eyes that were filled with some kind of power, eyes that seemed to bore into the very nerve of my emotions, testing my limits. What did he want?

At the present time, Andrea and I were standing in the stands, watching the fight that would decide our team's next opponents. Now that I thought about it, it was rather odd that Andrea would wake up at such a meager hour in the morning. I sensed something was troubling her, so I suggested that she should get some air before we headed to the stadium, which was where we were now.

Evidently, the fresh air did her well; her face looked clearer and brighter than earlier that morning. Also, she didn't look as stressed as she did; as for what was the cause, she wouldn't say, and I didn't want to pry.

I had been watching the fight intensely. The three fighters from the doctor's team were synchronized, perhaps too well with their attacks. What was it about them that make them so tough?

“Um, Kurama?”

I blinked as my concentration was broken by Andrea's voice. I looked at her, sensing that something was bothering her. But as I said earlier, I wouldn't try and force her to say something that she couldn't say. “Hmm? Andrea, is something the matter?” I asked her. I wasn't about to act like a cop and force it out of her. /1/

Andrea had turned her head away, and as I looked at the back of her head, she had grown silent. It wasn't a good silent, however; it was more a fear-filled silent, more like she could be hiding something. “Uh, nothing. Just forget it.” And as I heard the words, I blinked and turned my attention back to the fight, which was now getting heated as a Minotaur demon had now stepped into the ring. Naturally, his team already lost and he was still trying to win. If Hiei were around, he would call him a fool.

My eyes widened slightly as I knew the answer why the doctor's team felt strange: the three fighters were human! But that can't be correct; our team should have the only ones here. As they left the stadium after slaughtering the Minotaur, I felt that something was not right.

The next team had entered the ring, a team ironically named the Spirit Warriors. They took advantage of their large bodies to create a larger amount of Spirit Energy, but as I looked at the other side, only one person had walked into the ring… and that was Toguro. My eyes widened once again as I saw the solitary figure walk into the ring. Under normal circumstances, Toguro would probably become a corpse before the fight was over. But then again, this is the Dark Tournament, and normal isn't in the dictionary here.

Toguro's fight against the entire team was nothing more than jaw dropping. With five blows to the abdomens of the five-team members, the fight was faster than it took to buy popcorn. My eyes narrowed back, sensing that this fighter, and possibly his team as well, were going to be trouble.

I looked over at Andrea, who now had her hand over her mouth. Sensing that she was most likely in shock, I placed a hand on her shoulder. I was wondering if she was all right. “Andrea?” I asked her, my voice full of concern and maybe perhaps worry. “Are you all right?”

“I'm fine, thanks.” And with her answer, she walked out of the stadium with me following her.

The trip back to the hotel was very quiet, save for the birds chirping and the trees swaying to the breeze, which now started to make our hair dance around us. During the walk, I was trying to think of what could have made Andrea so tense. The fight was a possibility, but maybe perhaps it was a different answer. “Andrea?”

I saw Andrea tense up, almost as if she had something to hide, but I didn't want to upset her more than what she probably was. “Um, yeah?” Her answer was nervous, maybe slightly more than usual.

“You don't have to watch the next fight unless you wish to,” I answered her. I wasn't going to make her feel uncomfortable by coercing her into watching the next fight.

“I'm not a little girl, Kurama.” Her answer made sense; Andrea wasn't a little girl. In truth, she had grown in the months since she had been a detective. “That's just a setback from taking the job anyway. I'll be fine.” I nodded in agreement at the second part of Andrea's answer. There were indeed setbacks, but it was their job to get over them, and for a girl, Andrea was doing quite well.

“You're correct in saying that you are not a little girl anymore,” I answered in agreement. The next thing from my mouth would become a warning. “However, yesterday's battles were simple, and I have a feeling that the rest of the Tournament is going to become even tougher.” I thought of my battle with Roto while saying that. It was simple, yes, but that didn't mean that the rest of the week was going to be merciful; in fact, it was going to get worse.

“Same here,” Andrea answered, possibly in agreement. She leaned against a tree. I watched the breeze play with her hair, which almost sounded like feathers tickling her face, and as she continued, it looked like her hair was trying to enter her mouth. “Especially with that freaky Doctor team.”

“Yes. I suppose you felt the aura surrounding the three men?” I had to ask her; I was hoping she didn't know. But at the surprised look on Andrea's face, I knew she knew.

“You mean they're human?”

Inwardly, I was astounded. Maybe I shouldn't have asked her that question, but it was now too late to take it back as I nodded. Then, I saw Andrea do what I thought was the unthinkable. She had stood up straight, faced the tree she was leaning on, and punched her fist onto it. I cringed inwardly; the look on Andrea's face had turned from shocked to angry in a few short seconds.

“What kind of monster would do something like that?” Her voice was shaking, as if to control her anger.

I saw she was about to punch her fist into the tree again before I noticed that her knuckle was bruised from the personal abuse she was pulling on herself. Just as she reared her arm back, I grabbed her wrist in my hand. “Stop.” When she relaxed her hand, I let her go. “You shouldn't hurt yourself; I assure you, we'll take care of them.”

“But, Kurama, you can't kill a human.” Andrea's voice was concerned. I knew why; as a demon I couldn't kill humans, no matter what the circumstances were. /2/ Koenma had told me that during Hiei's rescue of Yukina, whom I had known, along with Andrea, that he was her brother. Of course, if I had said any of this to someone else, I'd be one skinned fox.

As I continued to look at her, her hair was trying to gain entrance into her mouth until her hand brushed it away. “Koenma'd eat you alive.” Her statement was true; Hiei's torture would have been easy.

I nodded in agreement; it seemed that Andrea knew the point almost as well as I did. My crimson mane was trying the same thing Andrea's hair had done, but it only resulted in the same motion. “Yes, I am aware of that.”

“So, what are you going to do?”

I shook my head; honestly, I had no idea how to answer her question. “I don't know,” I answered, looking at her bruised hand. “But at the meantime, don't harm yourself; it's nothing you've done.” A deep breath escaped my lungs; it had been a long day. “Let's head back to the hotel.”

With a nod from Andrea, we set back to the hotel, where, once again, the walk was quiet. In the quietness, though, I wondered what could have made Andrea so rigid when I said her name. It couldn't have been anything I had said to her. Just then, my heart started beating wildly; what was going on? Why was my heart beating as if I was having a heart attack?

Once we had arrived in the hotel and into the room, everyone was looking at a piece of paper. My eyebrow rose slightly, what was it for?

Andrea had decided to sit on the arm of the couch as I sat on the couch itself. I blinked, looking closely at the paper. Our team had to fight four rounds in a row. Now it became clear, as if it didn't already; the Committee was planning to get rid of us and wear us out. This was going to be a tough quarterfinal round.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Author's Notes:

/1/ Kurama didn't believe in coercion; he wanted to wait until Andrea was ready to talk.

/2/ In Episode 23, Koenma had told George that if a demon killed a human, no matter the reason, it was a serious crime.

Cece: Ooh. Bone-chilling chapter.
Kurama: The next set of chapters will be vastly different.
Cece: Um, Kurama? Be an angel and not talk all genius-like.
Kurama: I'm a demon, remember?
Cece: (falls over) Kurama….
Hiei: Read and Review already!
