Pain. That's all he could remember. That's all he could feel. Even breathing hurt. It felt as if fire was burning him, slowly, nerve by nerve. And then, in the darkness, there was not a light, but somehow, he could see in this darkness. He clung to it, it made feel as if he were alive again. He felt more than pain now. He could hear things, feel things. But he still couldn't escape the damnable darkness.
“ Are you sure you should be doing this, Koenma Sir?” The demon's abnormally long ears, even for demons, twitched. That was funny. He could never hear things before. The bat youkai decided to try his luck, wondering if it had miraculously come back after nearly three decades. And slowly, his lids opened. At first, it was blinding, being in darkness for so long. But, after several painstaking minutes, everything came into focus. The room was solid white, and he was sitting in a bed. The bat looked around briefly, before looking at his own claws in disbelief. He could hear his heart, his blood rushing in his veins. He was alive.
“ How?” The youkai croaked, staring at the Reikai Prince and his retainer, George the ogre.
“ It has been a long time, Kuronue. You're lucky my father especially permitted me to do this. Otherwise, you would still be stuck in Limbo. With all those things you did and stole, especially after you met Youko Kurama. I am nice enough to tell you that Youko died, but was reborn in a human body. A very stubborn kitsune, he is. However, he was later caught again and he and his human counterpart are under probation. You were revived to do something that you are perfectly capable of doing without fail,” Koenma said. Kuronue sat up quickly, just now noticing his nudeness.
“ What do you mean? Where is Youko?” Kuronue's mind was awhirl with all this information. He vaguely remembered his spirit showing up in Reikai and being sentenced to Limbo. He had gone quietly, but had inwardly dreaded the next one thousand years.
“ I am sure you know about the Koorimes, correct?” Kuronue gave a brief, curt nod.
“ The Koorime Princess, Yukina, is currently living with Genkai. However, Genkai has given her power to her apprentice. Yukina's brother, Hiei, who is also on probation, along with the other Spirit Detectives, are always unavailible to protect Yukina from those who would want her tear gems or Yukina herself for her status. With your personal experience as a bodyguard, assassin, and a thief, not to mention your abilities, I revived you to be Yukina's bodyguard until further notice. You have been revived, and will stay alive until your second death. Until your death, you will be under rule of Reikai and be on probation. Welcome back, Kuronue of the Bats,” Koenma smirked. Kuronue hissed at him slightly, baring sharp fangs. Koenma cocked his head to the side.
“ Your clothes are over there. Come out when you are oriented again,” Koenma grinned, and he and his retainer walked out. Kuronue glared at their backs as they left. Kuronue swept aside the white sheets and flipped his legs over the side of the bed, stretching his large black wings. Cautiously, wondering if he was dreaming and then wondering how you could dream in Limbo, put his feet on the cold floor. It sent chills through his body, making him shiver involuntarily. Kuronue slowly pushed his weight on to his legs and nearly stumbled, off balance from not being alive in so long. It took a few minutes, but soon Kuronue was able to walk normally. The bat demon walked over to where his previous clothing sat folded on the dresser, the only other furniture in the room besides the bed and two chairs George and Koenma had sat in, and put them on swiftly. Relishing in the feel of being alive, Kuronue walked through the double doors, wings folded elegantly behind him.
“ So, Koenma, you revived me, put me on life probation, and then assign me to protect Yukina, Princess of the Koorimes. What makes you think I won't kill her for myself?” Kuronue's violet eyes looked into the orbs of the Reikai Prince.
“ If such does happen, the Spirit Detectives will be sent after you and you will be sent back to Limbo,” Koenma said. Kuronue inwardly flinched.
“ Whatever then. I'll just leave and find this Yukina at Genkai's shrine. Shouldn't be too hard. Is there anything else I need to know?” Kuronue folded his arms, and his stance relaxed. Koenma shook his head.
“ Botan! Open a portal for Kuronue!” Kuronue watched the blue haired, pink eyed Grim Reaper create a swirling portal. Kuronue remembered to hide his demonic attributes before stepping into the whirl of colors, wondering what he had gotten himself into this time.

And this ends the prologue of “Like a Bird” my newest creation. I thought it would be interesting, especially since I never see many Kuronue fics out there. Enjoy.
