Ooo Kuronue Ooo
I stepped out of the portal ended up in a lush, demonic forest. I breathed in the cool air, sighing in delight when I felt my lungs inflate, before deflating, dispelling carbon dioxide. I walked through the forest, smirking as I felt youkai shrink away from me as they felt my youki.
My walk through the forest had ben refreshing, but it was sadly over when I came upon the large training shrine. I looked around, before seeing an aqua haired Koorime come out. I swiftly melted into the shadows. The girl, who I assumed to be Yukina, held bird feed in her hands. She threw it in the air, and I heard the pitter-patter as the seeds hit the ground. Five or six birds flew down from the trees and immediately attacked the feed, pecking furiously.
Yukina wore an aqua kimono with a blue obi. Her large eyes were garnet color and her form was petite. She wasn't the shortest woman in the world, but not exactly the tallest either. She had an innocent air about her, a kind nature. It was rather fascinating, especially since she was an apparition.
Yukina looked over her shoulder periodically, and I briefly wondered if she could sense me. There was no way she could actually see me, since only those with strong mental powers or dark magic users could see me, and there was no way a soft looking Ice Maiden knew dark magic.
I moved closer to Yukina through the shadows. She had a rather pretty face, and wasn't too curvy, but wasn't underdeveloped either. Then, I spotted an old, short woman. `Genkai…' I could sense she was definitely not as powerful as she used to be, no where near that power level. But still, she retained some of her abilities, of that I was sure. I would have to be wary around her. Afterall, Koenma never said exactly how I was supposed to go about guarding Yukina, and I chose to make sure no one knew of me unless it was necessary.
“ Yukina,” Genkai spoke. Yukina looked up.
“ Hai, Genkai?” Yukina responded. Her voice was soft and delicate. Naïve. Innocent. Absolutely strange for being the sister of Hiei, master of the jagan and the Kokuryuuha, bastard son of the Ice Maidens. As well as, most Ice Maidens did not sound that innocent. While they lived on an isolated island where about no one can reach them, they did have a rather large amount of female warriors. Not many demons knew this however, and have met their death this way.
“ Breakfast is ready,” Genkai replied. Yukina smiled softly.
“ Okay Genkai. I'll be there in a few minutes,” Yukina said. Then, she turned back to the pidgeons that were feeding, smiling. Genkai turned and went back into the shrine. Yukina held out her hand and a particularly large pidgeon landed on her hand. I noted her claws were retracted. `Not exactly uncommon, but it would be safer if she had them out.'
“ You're so pretty. I wish I could fly like you. Then I could always be free, with no worries. But, I have to go now. I'll see you later,” Yukina petted the bird's head before removing her hand, letting the bird fly away with its flock. Then, the Ice Maiden walked gracefully back to the shrine. I silently followed through in the shadows, slipping inside the door behind her.
Yukina walked down the halls that held a bit of an old fashioned look while still be modernized. I mentally memorized everything, and assumed that this morning's routine was tradition. Yukina sat down at the low traditional Japanese style table where steaming hot food sat. I licked my lips to myself, but stopped my stomach from growling. `Damn, I'm going to need to eat soon.' Yukina ate daintily while Genkai read a Ningenkai newspaper. In the corner I spotted a stack of Reikai magazines, Makai and Ningenkai newspapers, and others articles. `Those would be useful…' I mused.
“ Genkai, do you know how the Spirit Detectives are doing?” Yukina inquired. Genkai looked up.
“ As far as I know, the dimwit and the others are another case. Something about assassinating this lord in Makai or something like that,” Genkai returned to reading her paper. Yukina looked down and sighed.
“ I wish that I could see them more often. Hiei-san is so nice to me, he's even helping me try to find my brother,” Yukina smiled wistfully. I was shocked. `So she doesn't know who her brother is. Hmm, and no doubt Hiei wants to keep it that way.' Genkai looked up again, and this time she put her newspaper down.
“ Yukina, I'm not saying that leaving you here alone with just this old woman is the best, but the others are trying to make sure the majority of the people in all three worlds remain safe, including you. If they had the choice, especially Hiei, I'm sure they would all spend much more time with you. Don't forget that Keiko, Shizuru, and Shiori are also wondering about their loved ones. I'm certain that they will be done with their case in a few days and come back to visit you,” Genkai assured the ice apparition. Yukina gratefully at the old woman.
“ Thank you Genkai. You're so nice to me,” Yukina continued to eat, her spirits much higher. I shook my head and ruffled my wings a bit before leaving to explore the rest of the shrine. I poked around here and there, making sure to memorize the exact place of Yukina's room. I returned to the dining room to find Yukina putting the dishes in the sink, promising Genkai to wash them later. Genkai nodded and trotted off to the dojo. Yukina went outside. I followed after her and ended standing in the shadows of the forest as she sat on a bench to read a ningen novel. She was rather peaceful and didn't go looking for trouble, and I knew that it would be very boring to watch over her. I leapt up in a tree, keeping myself hidden. I wrapped my wings around me, further hiding my presence. Not many people knew that a bat youkai's wings could effectively hide their presence.
I almost began to drift off when I hear Yukina sigh. My eyes snapped open instantly.
“ I wish I had someone to talk to,” Yukina said wistfully. “ Someone who would say something back. Someone who would be honest. Someone who would listen.” I perked up interestedly. So the ice apparition was lonely? Not quite that strange, seeing as the only she lived with was an old woman. I continued to listen to Yukina talk to herself.
“ Yususke and the others leave me here so often, and I only get visitors when they, or Botan or Keiko stop by. Shizuru is always so busy running her salon, so she barely ever has time. I almost wish we were still at the Dark Tournament so I could talk to someone,” Yukina told herself. Before I could stop myself, my voice drifted across the yard.
“ I know how you feel,” I had said. Yukina snapped her head up. I shut my mouth and stayed absolutely still.
“ Who's there? Please, come out! I want to know who you are!” Yukina called, almost desperate. I foolishly opened my mouth again.
“ I can't,” I cursed myself and my need to constantly chatter. Yukina came close to the tree I was sitting in.
“ Why not? It's alright, it's just you and I,” Yukina said softly.
“ The fewer people know I am here, the better,” I replied. Yukina cast her head down. My heart clenched. `She looks so sad.'
“ I promise you that I'll let you see me though. Just not right now,” Yukina looked back with a small smile on her face.
“ Thank you, sir. I hope to talk to you sometime,” I watched the Ice Maiden happily grab her book and trot into the house. I sighed and followed her. `What have I gotten myself into…?'
