Chapter Two

Fair Play

* * *

I had no choice but to hear you

You stated your case time and again

I thought about it

You treat me like I'm a princess

I'm not used to liking that

You ask how my day was

You've already won me over in spite of me

Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet

Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are

I couldn't help it

It's all your fault

-Alanis Morissette (Head Over Feet)

Hiei rushed to school that morning and waited outside the door to first period for Hala. When she saw him she smiled. They talked before and after class and then again at lunch. Kurama had somehow kept Yuske and Kuwabara away. For that Hiei was thankful. While she was eating Hiei said, "Hala?" She looked up at him. "Would you like to go to the fair with me this weekend?"

She grinned and swallowed her food. "I would love to go with you Hiei." He smiled. This was easier than many ningen boys made it out to be. You ask, they agree, it was simple!

The rest of the week went by pretty fast. They hung out sometimes at her house after school and one night she convinced him to stay over for dinner. He met her parents who had learned enough Japanese to make light conversation. Overall they had said that they were glad she had met someone and were happy to let her go out with him whenever. Hiei smiled the day they were going to the fair.

She had worn sneakers, jeans, and a tank top. Her hair was up in a ponytail and she wore little make up. Hiei wrapped his arm around her shoulders and they walked to the fair. She looked as if she wanted to tell him something but was waiting. He smiled. Maybe she would suggest something for their next date. They first went on some roller coasters and then on a 3-D ride. They were both laughing afterwards and Hiei went to go get some more tickets. Hala leaned against the cotton candy booth and closed her eyes. An arm touched her shoulder and she opened her eyes expecting Hiei's own ruby orbs to be looking into her sapphire ones.

Instead she saw, Marcus, a boy that she had turned down when he had asked her out her first day there. "Hello," she said.

"Hi," he replied. "So are you here alone."

"No. Hiei and I are here together." For a second his eyes widened but then he smiled.

"So where is he?"

"He's getting tickets so we can go on more rides."

Marcus looked like he didn't believe her. He sighed and leaned on the stall next to her. "I saw him talking to some girl. Then he grabbed her ass and she led him to her car." He grinned at the mortified look on Hala's face.

"Hiei's not like that."

"So you've slept with him?"

"What?! No! We decided to wait."

"Probably why he's getting his jollies from some other chick."

Hala reached to slap him but he grabbed her small wrist in his hand and said, "I'm just warning you that he's not such a good guy Hala." With one arm he pulled her to him. She tried to resist but it was no use. He grabbed her ass and pinched it. She emitted a high pitched squeak and struggled harder. "Such a tight little ass you have Hala." She opened her mouth to scream but he silenced it with his mouth. His tongue roughly inserted itself in her mouth and forced its way around. She tried hitting him with her other hand but he caught it. He pushed her up against the stall in such a way that if she could have kicked out it wouldn't have done anything. She was completely helpless to his forced kisses. He had both of her wrists pinned with one hand and used the other to fondle her breast. She tried to writhe away. Her eyes were open, searching for someone to help her. Nobody was around. She could only hope Hiei would return and get this bastard off of her.

Finally his grip loosened as he tried to shift her. She got her left hand free and pulled his hair backward. He yelled and let go of her. She fell but kept her balance. She punched him with her right arm and then kicked him in the balls. "Temee," she screeched at the top of her voice. "How dare you touch me that way!" She kicked in his gut and turned away, looking for Hiei. She saw his back, walking away. He was about fifty feet from her. How was she going to catch up? "Hiei," she called after him. She was sure he had heard her but he did not stop or even turn around. She ran at top speed after him. Damn Marcus! Damn him to hell!

Another dream that will never come true

Just to compliment your sorrow

Another life that I've taken from you

A gift to add on to your pain and suffering

Another truth you can never believe

Has crippled you completely

All the cries you're beginning to hear

Trapped in your mind and the sound is deafening

Let me enlighten you, this is the way I pray

Living just isn't hard enough

Burn me alive inside

Living my life's not hard enough

Take everything away

Hiei heard Hala calling after him but he did not want her excuses. How had he been so blind? He had believed that something could develop out of his time with her but all she wanted was that Marcus guy. Well he was tall. Maybe that was it. Maybe she liked really tall guys. Well excuse me for being short. Damn! It's not my fault. And she's fucking shorter than me too! Hiei sighed. He knew she was running after him and would catch up to him. There was no way he could leave at a normal pace and hide and he didn't feel like revealing himself to her. Soon her steps were right behind him.

"Hiei where are you going," she said.

How dare she have pain in her voice!? How dare she act like I owe her an explanation!? He didn't answer and kept walking.

"Hiei," she whimpered. "Hiei look at me!" He stopped. No matter how mad he was he could not turn from her plea. She got in front of him and tried to look in his eyes, which were focused on the pavement. "Hiei what's wrong?"

His head snapped up. She quivered under his angry gaze but did not look away. He could not believe she had the audacity to ask him what was wrong. Well he would answer the little tramp. "What do you mean what's wrong," his voice was cold and angry. She was still shaking. "You were making out with Marcus. You let him...you let him...touch you." He said the last two words with disgust and pain. He could have sworn he saw a flash of pain in her eyes but he knew there was no way.

"Hiei I didn't let him do anything. I tried to get away but he was too strong. I finally did get away and just barely. Did...do you think...do you think I wanted him to do that?" Hiei broke their gaze. He started to walk again, giving her a silent yes. She continued at his side. "Hiei please, you have to believe me."

He whipped around and his next words cut through her like knives. "I don't have to believe a word that comes out of your filthy mouth. You're a liar, a slut, and I hate you." The pain in her eyes gave Hiei a sense of satisfaction. Again he started walking.

"Hiei listen to me," she said placing a hand on his shoulder. He stopped and knocked it off but stood before her, listening. "Hiei I care about you. I liked you since I saw you at the airport that day. Marcus did ask me out but I turned him down. At the stand he saw me and tried to get me to believe that you had gone off with another girl. I tried to get him to shut up but he...but he tried to force himself on me. I just barely got away. You are the only guy I care about Hiei. In fact...in fact I was going...I was going to tell you I was ready now. I didn't want to say it until after the fair when we were alone. And I also was...I mean...Hiei. Hiei, ai shiteru." There, I've said it. "It's true Hiei. I really love you but if you turn away from me, if you walk away, I will have no choice...no choice but to move on. If you don't believe me then this is it. You'll be turning from someone who truly loves you and I won't wait for you. I won't wait and see if you come to your senses and realize I am telling you the truth. I love you but I won't throw myself at you Hiei. So what is your choice? What are you going to do?"

It would be so easy to read her mind. No. I don't want to know how much she enjoyed Marcus more than me. She has to be lying. Hiei turned and walked away from her. Out of the corner of his eye he saw that she looked as if she had been punched in the stomach. She doubled over and knelt on the ground, tears running down her cheeks. She can't love me. No one can love me.

Damn you Hiei. You baka. I really do love you, you little shit. God, why don't you believe me? What do I have to say, what do I have to do to convince you? Kisama! I love you so much. Yet you brought me so much pain. Why does love hurt like hell? Why do I care so damn much?! What have you done to me Hiei? What have you done? She made no effort to stop her tears. She stared at Hiei's back and did not pick herself up until she could no longer see him at all. She let out a cry of pain and stood shakily. So it was all over? All the time she had spent with him meant nothing? She staggered home, her breath coming in shaky gasps. Both her parents were asleep and did not hear her come in. She turned on her shower and let the water hide the sound of her sobs.

Hiei angrily climbed the tree and pulled open the kitsune's window. Kurama looked up from his desk and smiled at his friend. "Have a good time?" Then Kurama saw the look of hatred, anger, and pain on his friend's face. "Hiei what happened?"

Hiei grunted and closed the window. He threw himself on to Kurama's bed and said through a pillow, "It's over."

"What do you mean it's over?"

"I caught her kissing another guy, a taller guy."

Kurama couldn't help but smile at the hateful way Hiei had emphasized taller. "Hiei I'm sure height had nothing to do with it." Anther grunt from Hiei. Kurama sighed. "Hiei did you at least talk to her?"

"Yes. All she did was feed me stupid lies and then tried to get me to believe she loved me."

Kurama thought about this news. "Hiei I think she might."

"What, love me?"

"Yes. Have you not seen the way she looks at you? Have you not noticed how her eyes light up when you enter the room?"

"Even if she does it didn't stop her from kissing that guy did it?"

Kurama had no idea how to comfort Hiei on that note. All he could do was sit with Hiei and try to get him to cheer up. He didn't know how Hiei could ever cheer up but there must be some way.

"I'm going to the Makai, Kurama."

"Why?"

"To let off some steam." Hiei was gone in a flash and Kurama sighed again. He turned off the light and fell asleep.

Think you're a little bit closer

To changing me

You're never winning me over

You're wasting time

Get away from me

Think you're a little bit closer

To changing me

You're never winning me over

You're wasting time

A/N- Another chapter finished. Hope you liked it. I know it might be sad and it was definitely short, despite my attempts to make it longer with song lyrics. Please review and tell me if you like it!
