Chapter Three
Head Up High
After killing about five demons that annoyed him, Hiei felt a little better. He walked silently back to the portal that led to the Ningenkai. He stepped through and looked up at the starry night sky. A long sigh escaped his lips as he thought about Hala. It amazed him how much pain an individual could feel and not die right there on the spot because of it. Did she know how much she had hurt him, was that her plan all along? Hiei clenched his fist as he thought of Marcus. Hiei could still see it when he closed his eyes. Marcus's hand fondling Hala's breast. He had not done it the way Hiei had, maybe that's what she liked. Maybe she liked it rough. She could have told him at least. But instead she went to the next body that was willing. He soon found himself in the park and in the exact spot he had taken Hala on their first date. He glared at the grass as if it was responsible for his pain. He climbed into a tree and fell asleep.
When daylight came Hiei walked around and was on Hala's street in no time. He blinked, completely taken by surprise at his location. He had not wanted to come here so he turned around and left. Twenty minutes later he was at the fairground. Hiei could still hear her laughter as they rode on the rides. He smiled, that had been fun. If only he had known what was going to happen a few short hours later as he left to get tickets. If he had known, he never would have gone, or he would have made her come with him. It was all in the past now and he could do nothing about it. He continued walking around for the rest of the day until night fell.
Tired, Hiei climbed a tree and then pulled himself onto the roof of an apartment building. He looked up at the sky, clouds blocking the moon from sight. His eyes grew heavy and he soon fell asleep. He didn't dream, so much as fantasize. In his fantasy Hala had not kissed Marcus and they had made love in the park after the fair. He smiled in his sleep. Had that happened, then he would be happy right now.
Twenty blocks away Hala gazed out her window. She had spent the whole day moping about the house, praying for Hiei to call. Despite what she had told him if he had come to see her that day she would have forgiven him for everything. She would have forgiven him for calling her a slut, tramp, and a liar. She would even forgive him for walking away and not believing her at first. But after tonight she could only believe that he didn't want her anymore. It was truly over between them. As she realized this, her sobs grew louder. She would have to face him tomorrow and she would let him see her pain. She wouldn't hide how much he had hurt her but she would not take him back if he asked. He'd had all of today to do that. So she was single now. One thing was for sure, she would not give her heart to anyone else in a hurry.
Hiei woke as the sun rose. Groaning he tried to keep his dream in his head. It had been wonderful. He was still with Hala and they had gone to the fair, remained together the whole time, and then gone off on their own. Hala had told him she loved him, that she was ready, and they had consummated their love. Hiei sighed, if only it had been real. He sat up and looked around. Not feeling like going to school he walked around for about twenty minutes but quickly grew bored of that. Deciding school would be better than boredom he went, and amazingly was a few minutes early. He went to his seat and soon his classmates filed in. The teacher walked in and said, "All right class, since you have been behaving well I will keep my promise and today you can choose your seats!"
Hiei heard a heavy but relieved sigh and looked up. Two rows away Hala was sitting with one of her friends looking glad that she did not have to sit in front of Hiei. As if she could feel him watching her, she looked up and her eyes met his. As she surveyed him, pain flashed in her eyes and did not leave. Hiei felt a sudden pang of guilt but knew that the lying bitch deserved every ounce of pain she felt.
Hala did not look away from Hiei's heated glare. She stared into his eyes, letting herself be fully revealed. Her friend tapped her on the shoulder and she reluctantly turned away from Hiei. She didn't look over at him the rest of first period but could still feel him watching her. The bell rang and she was first to the door. Despite her resolution to let him see how much she hurt, she didn't want to deepen the pain by talking to him. She sat in her chair second period and closed her eyes until the teacher began to speak. She slowly opened her eyes and looked back at Hiei, he was no longer staring at her. She sighed. Today might not be as hard as I thought. Maybe I won't even have to speak to him.
Lunch was awkward. Hala sat with her friends instead of Hiei and it took Kurama and the others a while to come over and sit with him. He sat for five minutes alone. He did receive some pleasure when Marcus walked up to Hala and she kneed him in the groin. He smiled, knowing that at least she was pissed at him for their being caught in the act. She had lost Hiei for their carelessness but wanted to make her lie seem to be a truth. He had to give her credit that she was a good actress.
Hala sat outside the principal's office and was called in. She sat down and stared out the window. "Why did you knee Marcus in the genitals, Hala?" She smirked. Marcus had been kneed there twice in the last forty-eight hours. There was no way he would be getting, what had he called it, his jollies? Well, there's no way he's getting his 'jollies' any time soon.
She looked at the principal. "He was harassing me," she said simply. Marcus had been technically harassing her for he slapped her ass as he walked by. Therefore she at least had a somewhat reasonable excuse for her behavior. The principal sighed and let her go to class, off the hook. She had missed her Japanese language lesson so she continued to her next class. On her way there she passed Hiei in the hall. They caught each other's gaze but neither said anything.
Hiei walked past her and closed his eyes, this was harder than he had imagined it would be. He breathed in her scent and his heartbeat increased. After school he saw her walking. He followed at a distance and saw that without him she took the bus. Had she really enjoyed his company? If she did well too bad, she should have thought before lip locking. Hiei walked away as the bus set off in the distance, his eyes watching the road beneath him.
A month later things were pretty much the same, however Hiei and Hala were on speaking terms. They didn't talk much, but they were civil. It was still very awkward between them despite attempts on both parts to make it easier. Soon another transfer from Egypt arrived at the school and Hala had been assigned to show him around, since only she could translate for him. His name was Ghalib. He sat with her everywhere and she would translate all instructions for him in writing or repeat them in Arabic. This went on for a week before he said in a low whisper, also in Arabic, just in case, "Hala, would you like to go out with me tonight?"
Hala smiled and in Arabic responded, "Sure. Pick me up at six?"
"Okay. Do you mind if we go dancing?"
She stared at him. "How did you know I love dancing?"
He smiled, "I didn't, but my brother opened up this new club that we can get in for free. What's your address again?" She wrote it down and he smiled. "I'll be there at six sharp."
She smiled and suddenly felt guilty. Her gaze floated to Hiei. What was she worrying about him for? He dumped her and it is healthy to move on.
It was five till six and Hala was just putting on her shoes. She wore a low cut black skirt, fishnets, and knee high boots. She also wore a shirt that in bright green outlined the words 'Cannibal Sex Kitty.' Her hair was up in a bun with some tips coming out and being spiky. She had dyed them a bright green to match the green on her shirt. She was ready to party!
She opened her door just as the doorbell rang and saw not Ghalib but Hiei standing before her. She stared at him in shock as he looked her up and down, and had an involuntary intake of breath as he realized how much skin she was showing. Her cheeks grew red as his eyes lingered on her body. She cleared her throat and his eyes now met hers. She could see laughter and mischief in his eyes, something she hadn't seen since that fateful night at the fair. "Where are you going all dressed up," he asked.
She strutted past him and walked to the edge of the sidewalk. "Is it really any of your business?"
Hiei smirked. "I just wanted to know."
"Why are you here Hiei? It's not like we're together anymore."
Hiei's smirk fell from his face, her words had stung him, despite the fact that they were true. "Well even though we're not together I think we could be good friends so I was wondering if you wanted to hang out with my other friends, and me. Tonight that is. We're going to an amusement park."
She smiled a little. Hiei was trying to be her friend. She knew that it could never work, not after how they had been together. "Sorry Hiei but I made plans tonight." On cue Ghalib pulled up in a silver convertible. Her eyes widened. "You can drive," she called to him.
He smirked at her questioning look. "I learned in Egypt and my dad let me get my license for here, apparently I am of age."
She smiled and excitedly opened the passenger side door. Hiei walked up to the door and said, "So you have...you have a date."
She heard his disappointment and felt suddenly guilty. The guilt left when Ghalib took her hand in his. "Like I said Hiei, we're not together anymore. I told you I would move on and I have. Thanks for the offer about tonight by the way. I'll see you in school tomorrow."
Ghalib hit the gas and they were off. She smiled as the wind was in her face and they soon parked outside a club. It was called club Sahara, definitely appropriate for the owner. She smirked at the name. Ghalib and his brother brought a little bit of Egypt with them to Japan and she was glad for it. In less than five minutes they were inside and the music was blaring. It was the kind of music that pounded throughout your entire body. She led Ghalib onto the dance floor and started to kick it.
Her arms were above her head and her hips swayed in time to the beat. Her back faced Ghalib and soon his hands were on her hips, swaying opposite of her. One hand stayed there and traveled over her hips with a rhythm that excited her. His other hand traveled upward until his fingers entwined with hers. She closed her eyes and let the music carry her away from reality.
She felt a fiery gaze upon them and her eyes snapped open. She looked around and soon her eyes met Hiei's. He had followed them and was now looking like he would kill Ghalib. She decided not to pay him any attention and instead focused on the beat. The song ended and a faster one took its place. Ghalib turned her to face him. She placed one hand on his shoulder as he wrapped one arm around her waist. The other hands were out, either above them or out to one side. There legs moving them in time to the music. They looked like a living melody.
"Shit," Hiei said under his breath as he lost momentary sight of them. He hated that she looked like she was having fun. Why should she get to enjoy herself when he still felt like he'd been hit by a snowplow? He smirked, a snowplow wouldn't have done as much damage as she had. He'd prefer that pain to this.
Kurama, Kuwabara, and Yuske had been on his case to talk to Hala about what had happened and to forgive her. He couldn't though. He still cared deeply for her but part of him could not believe that she hadn't wanted Marcus touching her. Now he watched as Ghalib touched her in such a sensual way he felt sure she would give him what he really wanted. He didn't care that they were just dancing. No one can touch someone that way and not want something.
Hiei still wanted to touch her, wanted to have her. He did not want to fuck her, he wanted to make love to her. Something he never thought he would call it.
He watched as they stopped dancing and got drinks at the bar. Ghalib handed her a beer but she leaned in, whispered something in his ear, and they drank cokes instead. He knew she would never get in a car with a drunk driver. She smiled as she finished off her coke and they got up to dance again. He knew that those should be his hands on her right now. His lips whispering into her ears. She should be closing her eyes and leaning her head on his chest.
After two more excruciating hours of watching this, he saw them leave. Quietly he followed them out of the club. They got in his car and he followed as close as he dared. Ghalib walked Hala to her door and leaned in for the kiss. At the last moment she moved her head, forcing him to kiss her cheek. She blushed and he smiled. "Goodnight," he heard Ghalib whisper to her. Ghalib had actually learned the language enough to not need Hala's translation anymore. Hala watched him drive away and then suddenly looked around.
"Are you still following me Hiei," she called out into the darkness. "I saw you at the club. What do you want?"
Hiei walked out of the shadows and into her line of vision. "I want to talk to you."
She nodded. "Well you can have five minutes, after that I am going inside."
"It's not going to take five whole minutes Hala."
"Then talk," she said and crossed her arms.
He walked up to her, now a foot away. "I want to talk...about...Ghalib," he said the name with distaste.
"What about him?"
He looked deeply into her eyes and leaned his head next to hers so she could hear his whisper, "You can do so much better than him." He moved his head so they were face to face. He was going to kiss her, he knew it. How couldn't he? As his lips moved to hers, he never looked away from her eyes. He saw emotion shine through. First, a hint of fear, and apprehension. What was he seeing now? Hesitance? No, he saw pure, raw, thirsty lust. Their lips connected and his arms pulled her waist to his. Her hands snaked up his chest and rested there for a minute. Soon he felt their pressure and his lips were pulled from hers. She panted to catch her breath and he could see tears well up in the corners of her eyes.
"No Hiei. We are over."
He smiled, "Please Hala, I want you." He had not forgiven her but he felt sure he could, eventually.
"Hiei, I told you what would happen if you left. You shattered my heart and I am not letting anyone have the opportunity to do that so soon. Especially you. Do me a favor and stay the hell away from me." She pushed him away and went inside. Her words had paralyzed him. He had been willing to make amends and she rejected him. He did not like this at all. In truth, the power she held over him scared him to death. He now felt what Hala had felt the night he had walked away from her. Somehow she had gotten through it and had held on to her pride. She held her head high and moved on. It seemed that Hiei would have to do the same.
A/N- Ok so Hiei fans are probably plotting my demise but frankly I say serves him right. If he had only listened to Hala then this wouldn't have happened. Ok well I made him be stubborn so that really doesn't save my hide from Hiei lovers does it? Sorry but it's how my story goes!
I'll try to post soon
