Protocol

"Why do I have the damn feeling we're being watched?" Yusuke said as he continued to look straight ahead, his hand

Ready on his riffle to fire.

"That's because we are." Responded Kuwabara as he quickened his pace.

"We are so dead." Yusuke said.

"Look you can go back I don't care I just have this feeling that they could be in danger," Kuwabara said.

"Well your gut has never been wrong so I trust you." Yusuke said.

They continued walking until they reached the little clinic.

Kuwabara looked around and pretended to have not seen the soldiers hidden behind the trees.

"Oi, Urameshi do you see what I see." Kuwabara said.

"Yeah, baka it seems they wanted to ambush them tonight but we didn't let them. Who is it the Lones or the Hatsumo." Asked Yusuke.

"Can't tell" said Kuwabara

After a few minutes they reached the clinic all the lights were out and it was very quiet.

Kuwabara slowly enter turning on his flashlight.

Yusuke look behind making sure they were not going to be ambush.

Kurama sat quietly on his cot taking his turn to be on look out while Yukina and Keiko slept. Then he heard light foots steps. He froze for a second. Then he reacted picking up his flashlight being the heaviest thing he had and the closest.

He quietly crept out to see two figures walking around inside the clinic. Then he heard a familiar voice.

"Hello, Yukina" Kuwabara called.

"Kuwabara-kun" called Kurama.

"Oi, Kurama." Kuwabara said as Kurama turn on the flashlight and pointed the light at his eyes.

"Gomen, what are you doing here." Kurama asked.

"Night patrolling" Kuwabara quickly responded.

"Liar" Yusuke mutter. Kuwabara elbow him in the ribs.

"You say something?" Asked Kurama.

"Uh no just agreeing with Kuwabara here. Hi by the way I'm Yusuke Urameshi." Yusuke introduce himself.

"I'm Kurama, so are you going to stay here the night." Asked Kurama.

"Yeah, you know it's very dangerous at night here." Kuwabara said. "So where's Yukina?" Asked Kuwabara.

"Oh the girls are sleeping I'm taking the night shift." Kurama said as he pointed to the back room of the clinic.

"Oh, well don't worry you should get some sleep me and Yusuke will be here for a while." Kuwabara said as he sat himself on some crates that were serving as chairs.

"Yeah, get rest" yawned Yusuke.

"Thank you very much goodnight" said Kurama s he walked back to the room.

Yusuke slowly walked back to the base.

"Hiei is going to kill me and skin Kuwabara alive." He muttered.

Kuwabara had decided to stay and help out Kurama and the girls.

Yusuke rub his right cheek, "well I have to say she has a nice right hook" Yusuke mutter remembering the slap Keiko gave.

"Nice way of meeting someone" he said.

He had said something really sexually perverted and Keiko didn't took it very lightly.

He sighed as he approached the gates of the base the sun was almost out.

"Here goes nothing" he mumbled as he entered.

Hiei woke up and like always he was the first one up. Like routine he went to check on everyone.

He went and peeked into Shizuru's room. She was still asleep; he then proceeded and checked Kuwabara and Yusuke's, room no one was in.

"What the fuck?" Hiei cursed he knew Yusuke was not an early riser someone had always had to wake him up. Kuwabara was usually just waking up.

He hurried outside. As he was about to reach the main gates he saw Yusuke approaching.

"What the hell are you doing out and where the hell is that baka!" Hiei shouted at Yusuke.

Yusuke gulped and then yawned. He quickly shut his mouth and tried to hide his tiredness.

"You didn't" Hiei stated thinking they had gone and slept with some women who were willing to do anything for food or money which ever was necessary.

"No, No, No, I didn't do that though it would have been nice but no I didn't." Yusuke said as he guess what Hiei was thinking.

"So care to elaborated what were you doing out in the jungle when you could get attack or worse." Hiei said as he cross his arms across his chest.

"I...well... you see...oh man... ok last night I caught Kuwabara sneaking out of the house. So I stop him and then he convinced me to go with him. So I did we stay there the night doing a night shift for the girls and Kurama and Kuwabara decide to stay and help settle in and finish fixing the clinic." Yusuke said as he scratched the back of his head.

"Hn, son of a bitch he broke my order and you did too." Hiei said. "Well let him be I'll deal with him later you have to your chores, Kuwabara's and Shizuru's if I were you hurry up. I think around noon the temp would be 95 degrees." Hiei smirked as he turned to walk inside the house.

"Oh shit" Yusuke groaned as he followed inside to put his things away.

Kuwabara wiped his fore head with the back of his hand. This was his tenth time he went to the well to fetch water he grunted and pick up the two five gallon jugs he was carrying.

He soon reached the clinic.

"Here's the water" he called as he places them at the entranced of the clinic.

"Oh Kazuma thank you very much." Yukina said as motion for him to bring them inside.

Kuwabara did and follow Yukina inside.

"Wow, can't believe all the people your helping its amazing." Kuwabara said.

"Yeah bit by bit more are showing up. Kurama right now is giving vaccination and Keiko is stitching up cuts." Yukina said.

"So what are you going to do with the water?" Asked Kuwabara as he followed Yukina to the storage room. He saw boxes line up in three rows and the cots were they slept in between each row.

Yukina open a box.

"Kazuma will you do me a favor and take this box out?" Yukina asked

"No problem" Kuwabara easily picked the box up and carried it out side.

"Soap and water, most of their infections are because no sanitary thing but I think if we provide them with these it'll work." Yukina said as she open the box that Kuwabara had carried outside to reveal lots of hand bar of soaps.

"So do you want me to get more water?" Asked Kuwabara.

"Yeah, please first let me place this water on the one-gallon bottles we have. Thank you so much Kazuma" Yukina said.

"Oh no problem anything you want and I'll do it" Kuwabara said as he grab a hold of Yukina's hand.

Yukina blush a bit but soon Kuwabara let go of her and went to bring more water.

Kuwabara slowly walked back to the base unwillingly he was coming back. He wanted to stay the night it was dangerous nighttime but he had to report in and face Hiei.

After a few more minutes of walking he reached the base and entered. He was approach by Yusuke.

"Hiei will skin you alive and you fucking own me I had to do your chores today." Yusuke said as he walked besides Kuwabara.

"Yeah, well I say it's worth it," Kuwabara said.

"Your nuts, why was it worth it?" Yusuke stop Kuwabara and face him.

"Yusuke people out there are doing something to help them look at us we can't do anything we are not allowed and I think that that is a bunch of bullshit. I don't care what Hiei does he can beat me to a pulp I don't care I'm going to keep helping them. I just can't stand around here and see all these things happen. It's not right. It's not fair." Kuwabara said.

"Yeah-well life's not fair." Both Yusuke and Kuwabara turn to see Hiei standing at the front door.

"Luck" said Yusuke as he walked away.

"Sir" Kuwabara saluted Hiei.

"At ease Kuwabara, even if I hit you won't care. Even if I give you a direct you'll ignore it. Kuwabara just promise me that if allowed ourselves to helped them that the other gangs won't come after them." Hiei said his voice wasn't angry he was disappointed he was just tired.

"Hiei I won't promise that it's not going to happen but I will promise that I will defend them." Both just stared at each other in the eyes none of them breaking the gazed.

Hiei admired Kuwabara's loyalty, kindness and his sincerity. Something not everyone had.

Kuwabara looked at Hiei he knew Hiei wasn't going to hurt him or scream at him. He knew Hiei is a great Lieutenant and that he was always looking out for the safety of others. Hiei had to always do the hard decision he never relaxed he was always on his feet ready to for anything. He allowed himself a few moments of fun, jokes but no matter what. Responsibility was always on the back of his head.

"You're dismissed Kuwabara. I'll let you keep going just as long as you report here at base and do your chores before going" Hiei said as he turned around and started to walk away.

"Hiei thanks"

"Hn, baka" Hiei murmured as he walked inside.

*Week later*

Kuwabara hurriedly got earlier than Hiei did his chores loaded his riffle and quickly ran out towards the clinic.

Yukina was always surprised to see Kuwabara come she was positive that he would get tired of helping.

"Kazuma you show up." Yukina said.

"Yeah like I said I would come so with what you need help today?" Asked Kuwabara.

Hiei walked silently through the halls of the house it was quiet. Kuwabara had left. Yusuke had barely left and he was stuck in the house with Shizuru.

"Damn its boring," he sighed.

"When is it not boring?" Said Shizuru coming out of her room.

"You're right. I just feel like I'm being left out of something." Hiei sighed as he walked towards the living room.

Shizuru followed. "Why don't you go to the clinic make a move on the guy before I do." Shizuru taunted.

"Hn, I don't know"

"Just go you fucking whimp go I bet he like you too."

"Shut up I'm going for a walk. You okay here alone."

"Yeah just go for your walk." Shizuru said handing Hiei his guns and pushing him out the door.

Hiei at first walked fast pace, but soon he started to walk slowly. He couldn't explain it but one of the reasons he let Kuwabara keep going was that in between he had an excuse to see him. He was very beautiful. Hiei bright red hair his emerald eyes. He was perfect. Hiei smile to himself something he rarely did.

He picked up his pace and soon started to jog. The faster he went the faster he get there. That was what he told himself to be motivated. It always works.

Hiei slowly step out of the forest to see a long line of people waiting outside of the clinic. He could see Kuwabara coming from the other side of the forest with Yusuke carrying big jugs of water.

He could see two women and the red head working at a fast pace trying to help everyone.

He walked slowly towards the clinic. He heard gasped from the people who saw him murmuring. He knew they didn't like him he always turn his back when the killings started he would help them gladly but he had orders and he didn't have enough space or power to protect them. He never like to kill he always shot to slow down, but never to kill. So that would be his other problem if he were to fight the gangs he would have to kill. Something he would not do lightly.

As he was about to reach the front door of the clinic he heard Kuwabara and Yusuke calling him.

"Hiei what are you doing here? We did all of our chores you said-" Kuwabara started to defend himself.

"I know what I said baka just checking the place out and I would like the people your willing to die for." Hiei said as continued to walk forward.

"Yeah well sure come on we'll introduce you to them." Yusuke said as followed Hiei.

"I can't I haven't finish hauling the jugs of water over here. You go with Yusuke Hiei."

Hiei just ignored them and walked inside. "Yusuke I can introduce myself." Hiei said Yusuke got the hint and hurried to catch up with Kuwabara.

Hiei saw the guys riffle set on the back he walked and picked them up.

Yukina came out of the back and was startle when she saw Hiei checking the riffle. She then remembered she had seen him the day their supplies were deliver and he was wearing the same uniform as Kuwabara.

"Hi can I help you?" Asked Yukina.

Hiei was lost in thought when he heard someone he turned around to find the girl with blue hair and red eyes.

"Oh, Hi uh no I'm fine I just came here to see how you were all fairing." Hiei answer as he the riffles down.

"Oh we are fine thank you for letting Kazuma and Yusuke come down here to help us." Yukina said.

"I haven't introduce myself I'm Jaganshi Hiei and you must be Yukina Kuwabara speaks of you a lot."

"Yes I'm Yukina and I'm flattered. Well feel free to see around its not much we haven't finish fixing. We still have a lot more to do but oh well. If you will excuse me I have to see a little boy."

"Go ahead don't let me interfered," Hiei said.

Yukina nodded and walked towards a little room.

Hiei walked towards the back of the clinic heading out side to the back there he saw the red head. Washing some bandages.

"Morning" called Hiei as he checks his watch ten minutes till noon.

Kurama was startle by the different voice. He immediately turned around to see the same man he had seen before a while back. Bit shorter than Kurama but just by an inch or two. The white starburst and his piecing red eyes. The way he saw everything his gaze saying I'm in control.

"Hi" Kurama said kind of shyly.

"Sorry didn't mean to startle you." Hiei apologize.

"No, It's okay um-"

"Hiei"

"Hiei I'm Kurama nice to meet you"

"Same here" Hiei responded.

Kurama went back to his task but still made small talk not wanting to be rude.

"What brings you here?" He asked.

"Just checking around," Hiei answer.

Kurama finish washing the bandages and hang them up to dry.

"So what's your specialty" asked Hiei

"Trauma cases I'm a fifth year surgical student." Kurama answer as he walked inside.

Hiei whistle. "Wow, that good." He followed Kurama to the storage room.

"Wow lots of supplies." Said Hiei as he saw the room. "You sleep here." Hiei asked.

"Yeah, we managed." Kurama said as he picked up a box he grunted as he picks it up.

"Here let me help" Hiei said a she grab the box from Kurama their finger brush a bit as Kurama let Hiei carry the box.

Kurama blushed a bit. He had to admit it but he was kind of attracted to the other man. Something he knew from the first time he saw him, but he couldn't be I mean he a soldier he must be straight thought Kurama.

"Um where do I take this?" Asked Hiei breaking Kurama's train of thought.

"Oh sorry follow me" Kurama walked towards the little room where Yukina was.

"Yukina here's more supplies." Kurama said as he motion for Hiei to place them next to her.

"Oh thanks, let see" she open the box. "Soap, gauzes, bandages, rubbing alcohol, antibiotic ointment. Perfect most of the cases today are minor injuries. So I think we will finish soon." Yukina said as she smiles at Hiei.

Kurama saw how the were looking at each other. Yeah he's straight though Kurama he sighed as he walked out.

"So all those boxes have the same supplies." Asked Hiei to Yukina he wanted to follow Kurama but he though later as he saw him bring another patient in.

"Yeah, almost all of them some other boxes are kits and others are out food. Canned food I guess we will managed for six months." Yukina said.

"Six months, that's as long we have left here on his island," Hiei said.

"Wow, that's nice how long have you been here?" Asked Yukina.

"Once the six months pass by it will be three years." Hiei answer.

"Wow, that's a long time to be here. How did you managed?" Yukina sympathized

"Hn, unfortunately we learn to cope with all of this." Hiei scoff.

Yukina nodded decide to change the conversation.

"So are you going to help us too?" Asked Yukina.

"We'll I have orders to not help you but who the hell is going to know I'm helping you. So yeah I guess I'll be coming down once in a while but not always." Hiei answer smiling.

Yukina gave him a sense of feeling of being a child again to be able to take risk but knowing that someone was ready to threat him for all his scrapes and bumps. Yukina gave him a feeling of home. Something he never had. He smiles something he rarely did in front of anyone. She made him smile.

"You have a pretty smile," commented Yukina.

"You know you should feel lucky I rarely smile." Hiei nodded.

Yukina was about to reply when shots were heard out side and people were screaming.

Hiei quickly grab Yukina hand and pull her to the ground.

"Stay low" he order.

He slipped his hand in his jacket and brought out his gun.

He slowly walked towards the front.

People were screaming out loud running away.

"Not another" Hiei murmured. Then his eyes widen some were heading towards the base. He pulled his radio out from his back pocket and called Shizuru.

"Hello" answered a yawning Shizuru.

"Shizuru another shoot out people are heading towards your direction when I get back I don't want to see anyone else inside with you." Hiei said.

"Shit what the hell you do Hiei."

"Nothing now be ready. Over and out." Hiei said as he walked out. He scanned the area. Black uniforms the Hatsumo. He kept scanning the area no sign of the leader that mean that the soldier were just on their chaos frenzy.

He saw Kuwabara running out of the forest towards the clinic follow by Yusuke. Soon behind them some one in a horse was chasing them.

Hiei kneel down and aim. He shot twice his first shot missing and the second one hitting the rider on the arm causing to fall of the horse started to run away.

Soon other soldiers notice him.

"Shit" he muttered.

Keiko was in another room stitching some patient up when she heard the shot. After a few minutes Yusuke came in.

"Are you okay?" He asked as he loaded his riffle.

"Yeah what's going on?" She asked he pulled her down.

"You don't want to know now stay on the ground." He ordered as he peeked to see Yukina lying in another room.

"Hey are you okay?" He called.

"I'm fine Kazuma is here with me." She called back.

Kurama was in the back room washing more bandages when he heard the shots and screaming of people. He walked slowly toward the front peeking from a window in the front.

"Kurama get down" he heard he turned to find Yusuke on the ground in on of the rooms on the ground.

He did so. He slid closer to the door to see out side.

Hiei looked around. He hated this there were many people laying on the ground shot.

Blood soak everything. Children were on the ground crying and screaming hysterically.

The soldiers just walked over the fallen one they injured and shot them one bullet to the face.

Hiei closed his eyes at the sight.

They place was soon deserted only a few people left the dead and wounded.

Out of no where a little kid came out of hiding and started running towards the entranced of the forest.

Hiei saw the glint of evil on the soldier's face.

"No" he shot twice. The bullet flew out as Hiei then regretted what he did.

The man fell down dead both bullets landing on the back of his head.

The other soldiers looked at him.

"You attack us we attack you. Wasn't that your rule Lieutenant?" One of the said as he approached him.

Yusuke slap himself on the forehead. "Hiei what the hell did you do" He stood up, and walked out side followed By Kuwabara.

Yukina and Keiko crawled out towards Kurama.

"What happen?" Asked Keiko.

"He interfered" said Kurama as he watched.

Hiei place his gun back in his holster.

"All right we do it your way." Said the soldier. He snapped his finger everyone put their guns away. And about ten other men circle Hiei.

Yusuke was about to run him.

"Yusuke, Kuwabara protect them. This is my fight I brought this on my own." Hiei said as he took a defensive stance.

Once face blocking his face and the other blocking his stomach.

It had gotten very quiet. Hiei scanned the are making sure to know who he had behind him and who was I front of them.

He looked at all of them. This was a big handicap fight ten to one.

Soon someone charged him from behind.

Hiei quickly turned around pivoting on his left foot his left hand came upwards in and open palm. His hand connected with the man's chin. Sending his neck backward hard then a crack was heard. He fell down immediately.

Yukina close her eyes at the sight and Keiko just shrieked. Kurama just watched emotionless.

Hiei faced everyone waiting for his next opponent.

The he was charged by two other. He saw the oncoming hit towards his face and the other coming toward back of his neck.

"That's low attacking from behind." Hiei growled as he grabbed the oncoming punch. He pulled the guy's arm hard feeling it coming out of its socket. He pulled him slamming him into the other guy from behind.

Soon everyone surrounding him charged towards him.

Hiei immediately duck down missing two hits toward his head. He turned just in time to block and oncoming kick toward his stomach.

He grabbed the oncoming leg with his right hand and lifted the leg upward with his left elbow he slamming down on the guy's knee shattering it.

Hiei quickly duck down missing another hit coming toward the back of his head he then slid back wards elbowing the guy in the stomach and then turning around and punching him in the face.

Soon he was tackled from behind and slam down on the ground. The pulled his hair and slam him toward the ground. He grunted as his face slid on the ground.

"Help him" called Kurama towards Yusuke and Kuwabara.

"We can't" said Yusuke.

Kurama was about to protest when Kuwabara cut in.

"Hiei order us I mean we broken orders but when it comes to fighting and interfering Hiei will kill us."

Hiei then rolled on to his back and quickly jumped up pushing himself up with his hands.

His face was cover with blood and dirt.

"Now I'm piss" he murmured. Hiei looked around Five were left.

Quickly he was about to charged when two shot were fired.

Everyone froze, out of the forest the leader of the Hatsumo came out.

Tall, tan skin, black hair, blue eyes.

Hiei and him made eyes contact. He got off his horse and walked toward Hiei waving his hand telling the other soldiers to back off. They did while dragging away their injured comrades.

"Lieutenant"

"Ikkeda"

"I see you are here defending these people what gives."

"I was just protecting my people." Hiei responded icily.

"But you see my men had orders not to hurt them unless they attack them."

"Hn, one of your order leaders came one morning to warn me about you being suspicious of them."

"Yes, I don't trust anyone here especially strangers who have the guts to step foot on this island."

"Well they are just trying to help people." Hiei answer

"Is that so you know they be doing them a favor if they leave? I don't want them here and I'm guessing that the Lones want the same thing."

"Tough luck they will be here for a while." Hiei retorted.

Soon Ikkeda pulled out a gun and pointed at Hiei's head.

Yukina and Keiko gasped and Kurama watched quietly he felt his breath catch in his throat. He felt sweat fall run down his face. He was amazed at how Hiei was handling everything.

Hiei just stared back not flinching, not sweating. He simply stood there feeling the barrel of the gun against his skin.

"You know what I hate about?" Ikkeda asked

"Hn, what?" Smirked Hiei.

"That even if I'm the one with the upper hand you never stop glaring at me with those eyes. Saying you are in control when you're not."

"Are you sure you're in control? Are you sure you have the upper hand? You know its something called fear that gives man doubt. I'm not afraid of death I'm not afraid of you therefore I have not doubt what so ever and therefore I'm in control." Hiei answer'

Ikkead put his gun away. "You are going to regret coming out of your base. Men move out. See you around."

"Hn"

After a few minutes everyone had left the only thing left behind were dead bodies.
