Disclaimer: Yadda yadda yadda………Never owned, don't own, will never own, you get the idea by now, I'm sure.

Kagome: All right. Seeing as that my muses are still on vacation, I've hired a new muse for the duration of their vacation.

Jean-Claude: Bonjour, Monsieurs and Mademoiselles.

Kagome: Don't mind him. He'll speak French sometimes, but he can only speak what I can speak, which is practically nothing.

Jean-Claude: But of course, ma cherie.

Kagome: *ugh* By the way, J.C. here is a vampire, okay? Oh, and I don't own any of Laurell K. Hamilton's characters either. I'm just borrowing them. Oh, and none of the Digimon characters either (Daisuke).

Jean-Claude: *chuckles* Oui. She is just borrowing me for some ideas. Her motives are completely innocent, I'm sure.

Kagome: Ach! Creep. *slaps J.C.* Behave yourself, or else I'll take Richard and Anita together instead of you.

Jean-Claude: You wouldn't dare!

Kagome: *smirks* I would dare. Now, let's get this started, shall we?

Jean-Claude: *sighs* All right. Please enjoy the reading, mon amis.

Chapter Eight: Why Me?

Daisuke grunted as he carried the sleeping Yusuke deeper into the forest. He was heading for the river, and the person who awaited him there. That person had arrived before Genkai and her companions, and had requested that Daisuke bring Yusuke to him.

As he entered the clearing, he saw the person who awaited him there. Tall, with blood-stripes across his cheeks and around his wrists; piercing golden eyes, pointed elf-like ears, whining silvery hair, and a large fluffy tail.

The inu youkai turned as he entered the clearing and smiled, showing his fangs. "You brought him," was all he stated before moving over to Daisuke and his burden.

The hanyou lord groaned and stirred, beginning to wake up. Daisuke began to worry; the drug he had put in the food and drinks should have kept him unconscious for at least another twenty-three hours or so. That he was waking up didn't bode well for him.

The youkai noticed his discomfort and followed his train of thought, laughing. "There is no need to fear. He is waking up because I need him to wake so that I may complete the ritual and bind him to me again, only better this time." With that, he dismissed Daisuke, then turned back to the teenager, who was by this time awake and staring at him.

"Welcome home," the dog youkai murmured, before reaching down and pressing his hand against Yusuke's chest. Bending down, he captured Yusuke's lips, and the bonding began, but in reverse. Instead of the youkai body melding into the human body, Yusuke began to converge into the demon's body.

Now wide awake, Yusuke brought his hands up in an attempt to use his Rei Gun. The youkai, however, had once been a part of him and knew his attacks, so he was able to stop it. In desperation, Yusuke bit down on the lips of his attacker, hoping to force him to back off. Instead, the dog demon just drank the blood that was spilt from his cut lips and continued the melding.

Yusuke began to make noise in the back of his throat, trying to yell despite the fact that it was muffled by the youkai who was kissing him. The inu youkai just kept kissing him, as their bodies began to meld together.

Two minutes later, the inu youkai stood up and stretched, glad to finally be feeling whole again. He smirked, remembering how all this had begun.

It had been easy for him to escape from Botan before she could bring him to Koenma. Since nobody had told the little baby where they were going, he could not contact them and warn them that he was free. The demon, however, knew where they were going, since he was part of Yusuke, even separated, so he came here before them and explained his problem to Daisuke, who agreed to help him, for a price.

The youkai had agreed, and Daisuke had ordered him to kill an S-level demon that was responsible for the death of his best friend. Once accomplished, Daisuke showed him the clearing with the little brook, and then had him wait until he was able to bring Yusuke.

Now the youkai was complete, and the others couldn't very well do much of anything, since Yusuke was a part of him now. The inu youkai decided to head for Daisuke's cabin to taunt the others with their own helplessness.

On his way, he began to wonder what to call himself. He certainly didn't want to use the name Yusuke, that was simply degrading. Several names ran through his head, before he finally settled on one. He would go by the name Ashitaka, or "ruthless one." [1]

Grinning to himself, he reached the cabin and sent out his ki, clearing the drugs from everyone's system and waking them up. It didn't take them long to realize that something had woken them up and that Yusuke was missing. When they realized this, they came running outside, searching for any clue as to where their friend may have gone.

Deciding to help them find their missing teammate, he stepped into the clearing, away from the shadows of the trees. The movement caught Hiei's attention, and the koorime's katana was at his throat in seconds.

Not fazed at all, he just smirked at the others as they formed a half-circle around him. Then he glanced down at the fire demon. "I wouldn't cut if I were you. You'll kill me, yes, but you'll also kill your friend, Yusuke."

He kept an eye on the others, and was gratified to see their reactions to his statement as they jerked, startled, and their eyes flew wide. Hiei was the first to speak. Not moving his katana, he reached up and released his Jagan, then looked the youkai over. The others waited with bated breath.

The small jaganshi just sighed and spoke, "He's telling the truth." The others just stared at Ashitaka, wide-eyed, then swung around to glare at Daisuke, who explained what had happened.

Kurama was all for killing Daisuke on the spot, and Kuwabara agreed, but Genkai stopped them, telling them it was pointless to kill him. After all, what was done was done, and they should be concentrating on how to go about remedying the problem.

Kurama just nodded and turned back to Ashitaka, but not before shooting a glare at Daisuke that promised a painful demise later. Kuwabara spluttered incoherently for a few more seconds, then seemed to get himself under control, and glared at Ashitaka, snarling.

Ashitaka just smiled back at them, then made his demands. "If you ever want to see your team leader again, you'll get me off the hook with Koenma. Once the punishment has been waived, I will once again let Yusuke take control. If he refuses, then you can forget about ever seeing him again, unless I decide to let him out for a while. After all, can't have the devil world know he is unable to run his land, now can we?"

With those final words, Ashitaka turned and bounded off into the trees, leaving the companions behind to ponder the new turn of events.

After he left, the four remaining teammates rounded on Daisuke, demanding how he could do something so idiotic as to accept a demon's offer and hand over Yusuke. After all, the teenage warrior had trusted Daisuke to help him, not to trick him.

Daisuke then used his last resort in a desperate attempt to stave off death for a while. He pointed out that he had helped Yusuke. After all, he was complete now, where he wasn't before. This didn't seem to impress any of them very much, so he decided to simply tell the truth, and see what happened afterwards. He told them of his friend's death and the agreement he had made with the inu youkai. He kept nothing from them, hoping to calm them with the truth.

It worked for the most part. The companions still didn't trust him and some of them would have loved to kill him and send him straight to hell, but at least he wasn't harmed in any way. The four companions then took their leave, heading back to Genkai's temple to decide what their next move would be.

Several hours later, they still hadn't come up with anything. The only option they really had was to do as the youkai had demanded, and try to get the punishment negated. They decided to do so first thing in the morning, and collapsed, exhausted, into their beds.

Kagome: All right, people. I know this isn't going too horribly fast, but I hope it's at a pace that's agreeable to you at any rate.

Jean-Claude: She's still waiting for reviews people. *sighs* You all are so slow with them.

Kagome: *slaps J.C.* Don't push them. As much as I love good reviews and even constructive criticism, they aren't going to review if they don't want to. It's as simple as that. Why can't you get that through your thick skull?

Jean-Claude: *pouting* I just want some reviews. It's not much to ask, is it? After all, I'm only here for a short time, and I'd like to know if I'm any good.

Kagome: *rolls eyes* All right, I suppose I see your point. *smiles indulgently* All right, then. Go ahead.

Jean-Claude: *grins* Merci beaucoup. All right, people. Review, please!

[1] Ashitaka does not really mean "ruthless one." I just liked the name, and decided that that's what it would mean. My apologies if this offends or confuses anyone.
