Chapter one: Meeting
Walking into the denser part of the forest, she feel unafraid as she traveled farther and farther from the paved trail that she had started out on. Rose keep walking, stepping over roots and fallen branches while trying not to get stuck on any trees (or worse, spider webs!), when she saw a clearing about 30 feet ahead of her.
She is now moving faster, trying to find her way to the clearing. Her heart pounds as she neared the opening, watching as the trees around her thinned out. Finally, finding herself standing at the top of a beautiful hillside with lush, green grass.
The gently sloping hill looked so serene as she stepped into the sunshine. It called to her and begged her to sit and stay awhile. She obliged, wandering around until she found a spot that looked inviting. Rose took off her shoes and reveled in the feel of the grass between her toes. She wasn't there long, however, before the rigors of her last few days and the lack of sleep finally took hold of the weary traveler. As she drifted off to dreamland, a small smile found its way to her lips. A few minutes later, a bright flash of light startled her awake. A few seconds later she heard yelling.
“Urameshi! That could've killed me!” The first boy yelled.
“You're the one who wanted to train, Kuwabara. Looks to me like we're working on your agility today, huh?” Chuckled a second boy.
“That's not funny, Urameshi.” The boy, now identified as Kuwabara, replied.
“Well,” said Urameshi. “Let's work on agility anyway. Race ya to the top of the hill and back down again.”
“Shouldn't we wait for Kurama and Shorty?”
“C'mon. Don't tell me you're scared of losing!”
“Course not!”
“Then get ready….”
“Urameshi, why can't we wait?”
“Get set…”
“At least I don't have to race Shorty this time.” Kuwabara half grumbled.
“GO!” Yelled Urameshi.
Sitting up now, she decided to watch the race. Suddenly, the racers came into her view. The two boys seemed to be locked in a dead heat as they neared her.
Suddenly, a bright light flashed and Rose were knocked on her side by a tall red-haired girl and a small boy with black hair that stood on its ends.
“Hey!” she cried, startling the two, as well as the racing boys. The racers switched directions and came her way as she stood and brushed herself off.
“I'm sorry,” Said the redhead (who she now realized was not a girl, but a very cute boy!), “I didn't see you there. Are you all right?”
She was just about to answer when the black-haired racer spoke up. “Kurama, Hiei! Hey!” he panted, “What did pacifier-breath want?”
The orange-haired racer rushed to her side instantly. “Are you all right, pretty girl? They didn't injure you, did they?”
Finally, the other three pairs of eyes turned in Rose's direction. She looked at all of them for a moment and the turned her gaze back to the boy with the orange hair. “I'm fine. I was just taken off guard, that's all.”
“Allow me to introduce myself: I am the great Kazuma Kuwabara!” he cried. The others with him just rolled their eyes.
She nodded. “It's very nice to meet you, Kazuma.”
“Oh, please…Call me Kuwabara.” He interjected.
“Okay, Kuwabara. My name is Rose.” She replied, blushing slightly.
Spurred on by a gentle nudge from the red-haired boy, Kuwabara continued the introductions. “This is Yusuke Urameshi,” he said, pointing to the black-haired racer. “This is Kur--” He said before receiving an elbow to the stomach from the short boy with the spiky hair. “I mean…This is Suuichi Minamino,” he said, pointing in the direction of the boy with the red hair, who smiled at you. “And the shrimp over there is Hiei.” He said, finally pointing nonchalantly to the boy with the spiky hair.
“Shrimp!?” Hiei said, giving Kuwabara the death glare and slowly stepping in his direction. Kuwabara chuckled nervously and then took off running, with Hiei not far behind him.
She nodded at the two boys that were left; Kurama and Yusuke, giving them a soft smile. She watched Hiei chase Kuwabara down the hill for a little while before it dawns on her that she might be interrupting them in some way. Rose blushed and quickly reached for her shoes.
“What's wrong, Rose? Is everything all right?” Yusuke asked when he saw what she were doing.
“I just--- realized that I should be getting back. Everyone's probably worried about me as it is,” as she slide on her other sneaker, she stood. “It was very nice to meet both of you and please tell Kuwabara and Hiei that I said goodbye.”
They nodded and were just about to say their goodbyes when they heard Kuwabara shout.
“Hey! Watch that thing, Hie--”
“I'd better go get those two. Cya around, Rose.” said Yusuke as he jogged down the hill.
She turned and began to walk back to the path that had brought her here, when she heard someone coming up behind her. She turned and saw Suuichi walking up to her.
“I thought that you might like some company.” He said, falling into her step.
`Wow…he's cute!' she thought to herself. “Thanks, but I don't want to take you from your friends.” She replied.
“It's really no trouble. I have to get home to my mother anyway,” He looked ahead at the trees. “Do you know there's a path back that way?” He pointed behind him.
She blushed. “No. But I came in this way.” she said, pointing to the path through the trees.
“Both ways lead back to the park, but I just thought that you might like to take the one least likely to get sticks caught in your hair.” He said, retrieving a small piece of bark from her auburn locks. `He's thoughtful too! *Sigh*' she thought absently, as he takes his hand from her hair and tosses the piece of bark away.
