Chapter 3

"Koenma-sama, Botan reporting!" Botan said as she bowed to the tiny toddler sitting in his overstuffed high chair. Koenma was looking worriedly at a file and hadn't even heard Botan's greeting.

Botan walked over to him and looked over his shoulder. Koenma flew around and shouted, "Who told you could come in?" Botan jumped back, "Forgive me, sir. I did announce my entrance but you didn't say anything. I thought that you just didn't want to say anything at the moment." "Well, you just better tell me when you come in from now on." Koenma replied. Botan tried to hide a smile as she nodded and said, "Yes Koenma-sama."

There was an awkward silence as Koenma immediately went back to reading through the files. "My goodness, Koenma-sama, this is the very first time that you ever stopped talking to me to go back to your paper work! May I inquire as to what the problem may be?" Botan asked. "I'm looking over the history of a few things and people. So far I've have regrettably turned up little that could help Yusuke and I am in too much hot water with my dad to request any special files. On top of that I have a more serious problem waiting for Yusuke as soon as he cleans up this pulse matter. I believe that this kind of problem won't be as easy to uncover." He pushed the files aside and let out a heavy sigh, "So, Botan, have you contacted Hiei?" "Yes, I promised him an artifact out of the treasury. He agreed to go help but he seemed a little uncomfortable when I mentioned the pulse. He seemed to grow incredibly uneasy with the description of energy. Hiei told me he would see Yusuke by tomorrow the latest and that they would take care of the problem." Botan replied nodding happily. "At least that is going well." Koenma replied looking discontentedly at the remaining files piled high above the toddlers head. Botan looked worried, "What is wrong, Koenma-sama?" "I'm not sure exactly what yet, but it may be a demon uprising in the works. This one may be serious. Information is still looking into it. But if it is a big enough problem Yusuke will have to look into it." Koenma replied. "Is there any information on the leader?" Botan asked. "No, not anything…not yet." Koenma putting his head on his desk. "I see. Sir…may I ask yet another question. Are you sure that Yusuke is up to the challenge of another case like this? We have worked him hard ever since we recruited him. We must be careful or we'll burn him out. He'll lose interest in what is good for the Human World and want to focus more on the way he wants the rest of his life to go. He won't always want to be your Spirit Detective. What then?" Botan asked. Koenma sucked on his pacifier thoughtfully and replied, "Do what we've always done. Recruit someone new. But I think that Yusuke will be able to handle this case. I have faith in him. Hopefully, it won't be for a while. Yusuke doesn't know it but he has been the best Spirit Detective I have ever had. Hopefully, things will pick up. I hope everything can be settled. Please keep an eye on Yusuke and inform me on the pulse situation." "Yes, Koenma-sama." Botan bowed and left.

In the Forest of Fools in the upper realms of Demon world, Hiei sat thoughtfully ad typically silent as he leaned up against the trunk of a comfortable tree. His bandaged hand gently throbbed letting out a short spasm of pain. "That's unusual. I haven't had pain in my arm since I used that technique the first time in the Dark Tournament." Hiei thought glaring at it. He was going to unwrap it. He had to. It had been too long since he had last seen the powerful tattoo on his arm. As his hand touched the wrappings he hesitated. "Why am I afraid of what I may find? What is this nonsense?" Hiei thought angrily. He quickly removed the wrappings. He let out a short gasp. The tattoo! It was fading! It was already becoming grayish. "How is this possible? This can't happen to me! I am Hiei, the fire apparition. Master of the Dragon of the Darkness Flame! Now I must face the orange haired buffoon and not be certain that I can incinerate him!" Hiei stopped himself and breathed out, "No need to worry. It's only to investigate a stupid energy pulse. There is nothing to worry me. I am powerful without it."
