Chapter 2_YYHFF
"I can't believe you asked me to leave college just to look at a stupid pulse." Kuwabara whined as he sat in Yusuke's red Corvette. "If you're just gonna complain, shut up. I'm not in the mood and once you actually take a good feel, Mr. Tingles then I think you'll agree that it's worth checking out." Yusuke turned a sharp corner. "Man! Do you have to drive as angry as you talk! I mean ever since you got your license you're more dangerous than with your Spirit Gun!" Kuwabara shouted as he clutched the side of the car as Yusuke sped around yet another sharp corner.
The car squealed to a halt in front of a large building. Kuwabara looked up, "Hey this is where Kurama works! Minamino Industries! We are here to pick up Kurama?" "No shit Sherlock." Yusuke replied. "Man, what's up with you? You've been even more stinging than usual. Somthin's happened between you and Keiko. I know it." Kuwabara grinned mischievously. "Yeah, something has happened! We had a huge argument! She thinks I should resign. I told that I had a responsibility and she said that I've done enough. I told her that she could go and cry in the corner or do whatever the hell she felt like but I wasn't going to resign! Se slapped me and told me I was a selfish jerk and told me that as far as we were concerned we were over. And…I said that I didn't care. She started to cry and ran out of the apartment." Yusuke replied his voice falling. "Well, I wouldn't let that get in the way of the case." Kuwabara replied. Yusuke looked down, "I guess I've just gotten used to having her back me up on everything. Now that we're over, it feels so freaky, like I just lost a limb and don't know how to replace it." "Aw cheer up! The gang's getting back together and we'll have a great time. Then you and Keiko can iron everything out then things will be great again. You'll see." Kuwabara replied putting on his biggest grin. "Yeah, whatever…let's go." Yusuke replied glumly.
The tile floor in the lobby was impeccably clean as Yusuke and Kuwabara smeared the super clean floors with their dirty sneakers. The strode up to the lobby desk and smiled at the secretary who glared back at them with a sour expression. "Hey, there ma'am. We have to see Mr. Suichi Minamino on extremely urgent business." Kuwabara replied flashing his most friendly look. "You have an appointment, I presume?" The secretary replied in a high nasally voice. "Well, no." Kuwabara replied rubbing the back of his head. "Well, then you just can't see him. He doesn't have time for riff raff." The Secretary replied angrily her glasses slipping down her nose as she glared at them with a demeaning look. "Listen, sister. I've waited to see Suichi for the last week and the only thing I have gotten is piss poor excuses. I have a deal waiting for Mr. Minamino so that he receives a good ten billion dollars which means a nice little hike in pay. I have a time limit and your attitude isn't helping me!" Yusuke growled and leaned over the counter at her. "Ten billion!" The secretary gulped and switched on the intercom. "Yes, Miss Peach?" Kurama's voice echoed through the intercom. "Two gentlemen to see you sir." The secretary replied. "Who are they?" Kurama's voice asked. "Who are you?" The secretary directed the question at Yusuke. "Yusuke Urameshi and Kazuma Kuwabara." Yusuke said into the intercom not waiting for the secretary to take care of it. "Yusuke! Kuwabara! Come right up! I've been expecting you!" Kurama exclaimed.
Kuwabara shot the secretary a cocky smile. The secretary returned the look with a glare of pure irritation. "Go, up." She replied quietly. "Oh, by the way…which floor Yusuke asked as they entered the elevator. "Twenty-two." The Secretary mumbled. "Thanks again!" Kuwabara said as Yusuke nudged him into the elevator. "You told a lie! She's not getting a raise!" Kuwabara protested as the elevator doors closed. "Shove it! You would still be trying to plead with the little sour puss! We're seeing Kurama! What more do you want?" Yusuke replied angrily. "A spirit detective is supposed to be honest!" Kuwabara retorted. "Sure. Yeah, you keep thinking that Kuwabara." Yusuke replied.
Kurama was waiting for them as the elevator door opened. "Yusuke! Kuwabara! I haven't seen you in ages!" He exclaimed happily. They exchanged hearty handshakes all around and Kurama led them back into his office. "Hey Kurama, what's the deal with little Miss Bitch downstairs?" Yusuke asked. Kurama sighed, "She came with the business, unfortunately. Even more unfortunate is the fact that I actually need her." "To what scare your customers away. She does a good job." Kuwabara replied frowning. "Well, I have been so bogged down with work that she sorts through most of my meetings and sees which ones I can cut. But enough of that. You have some business to discuss, I am sure." Kurama replied smiling. "Yeah, we do." Kuwabara replied. "Before you tell me may I make an educated guess?" Kurama asked. "Sure." Yusuke replied. "A strange energy pulse in the city and Botan has asked you to investigate because they have no idea what it could be." Kurama replied coolly as he sat back down in a big black comfortable looking leather chair. "Yeah…how'd you know?" Kuwabara asked. "I have felt the pulse for the past three months. I too have had no luck in discerning exactly what type of energy is creating the pulse. I knew eventually it would come to your attention. I suppose you wish me to close up the shop for a little while and help you out." Kurama replied looking out the full panel glass towards a particular skyscraper a good walk from the office. "Could you do that?" Kuwabara asked. "This is my company…I can do whatever I wish. Kurama replied adjusting his necktie, "In truth, I have been waiting for another case to come up. This work has done a better job of killing me than any other foe before. It is positively stifling." "Well then fox boy, jump on the band wagon. Botan is in the process of contacting Hiei who should be here tomorrow or the day after so, we're gonna set up shop at Kuwabara's for a while." Yusuke replied leaning forward on the desk. "Then I shall arrive at Kuwabara's at noon tomorrow. Is this good for you?" Kurama asked. "No problem. We'll see you there." Yusuke replied smiling.
As they left the building and began to walk down the street Kuwabara looked over at Yusuke, "He's different. Not in a bad way but now that he looks like a business man, he reminds me even less of Yoko Kurama. Could he really handle another case? I mean it's been three years since the last time we had a big case." "C'mon Kuwabara, don't be an ass. Of course he can handle it. He's Kurama! He was an A-class demon." Yusuke replied. "That's just it…was! He was. Could he handle it now?" Kuwabara replied. "Don't be stupid. He'll prove you wrong." Yusuke replied.
Kurama watched them from his lofty peak up on the twenty second floor of the Corporation he had inherited. He put his hand under his hair and drew out the rose. That rose. He looked down at his and then attempted to create his whip. It took him longer than usual to summon it. And he was huffing and puffing when he had finished. "What's going on! That was never a problem. Could it be that the lack of use is making my power disappear? Is that even possible? Now how can I expect to be of any use to Yusuke if I can barely summon my whip. I can still feel the pulse of energy, Kuwabara can barely feel it. I sensed that. He doesn't want to tell Yusuke. He's afraid of what might happen if the pulse is actually dangerous. I wonder if Hiei is going through the same thing. If he's still in Demon World he must have kept his skills sharp. We must confer as soon as he arrives."
