Chapter 11 - Pain and Death

"Wakey wakey eggs and bakey." I groaned and rolled over at the sound of a voice, pulling the covers over my head.

"Ten more minutes mommy," I said groggily.

"I'm not your mommy and you can't have ten more minutes."

"Go away anyway."

"Sorry, can't. I was sent to bring you down to the dining hall and bring you I shall." Hands grabbed me around the middle and I found myself being thrown over Egan's shoulder. After pulling the blankets off, he walked out of the room and down the hall.

"Put me down Egan Quickfire!" I demanded, fully awake now. No reply except laughter. "EGAN!!! I am going to kill you the minute you put me down!"

"The I guess I can't put you down then, can I?" he shot back.

"Ohhh, you better Egan."

"What can you do?" he questioned as we entered the dining hall.

"This." I pulled my foot back as far as it would go and kicked with all of my might. A low, pained groan came from Egan and he dropped me as the others started laughing.

"Where'd you kick him?" Oriana asked.

"Right where it hurts," I said, laughing at his expression. "Don't look at me like that Egan, you asked for it."

"I'm afraid I have to agree with the lady, you did ask for it buddy," Sky agreed.

"I never would've asked for that." Egan said with a tight voice.

"Your fault," I said, skipping over to the table and flopping down. Slowly walking over to the table, Egan carefully sat down.

"Pass the pancakes," I said. When they came I forked three on my plate and drowned them with syrup.

"Enough syrup dear," mom scolded. I stuck my tongue out at her but put the bottle down and began eating.

"Okay guys, we have to go," Sky said, rising from his seat. Jumping from their seat everyone dashed out of the door.

Five hours later, Oriana looked around and asked, "Where's Eron?"

"Oh no!" I cried, my hand flying to cover my mouth. "We never got him up!"

Stretching, Eron yawned and sat up and looked around. When he finally oriented himself to his surroundings, he got up and left the room. Checking the other's rooms, he learned a distressing fact, they were all empty. `I must've overslept," he thought as he took off down the hall to find them. When he skidded around a corner, he ran full tilt into Kendi.

"Hey, didn't you leave already?" he asked in confusion. Eron shook his head and climbed to his feet.

"I think I was supposed to though. Which way is out?" With a smile, Kendi pointed the way Eron had come.

A half hour later, Eron flopped down onto the expensive carpet lining the floors and sighed heavily.

"Are you lost?" Eron looked up to see my dad standing near him.

"Yes, sir."

"Don't call me sir, I'm Rocky. You hungry?"

"Starving."

"Then come and eat with me while we wait for my crazy daughter and the rest of her friends."

Rocky led Eron down several hallways until they finally arrived at the dining hall. Inside, the cooks were laying out a meal for two. They were soon sent back for more and quickly brought out food for Eron. The two boys attacked their food while my mom, Rain, demurely ate next to them.

After they finished, Rocky invited him to a walk around the gardens that littered the property. Eron reluctantly agreed and soon was lead out of the house and into the gardens. To Eron's extreme annoyment, Rocky stopped at almost every bush and studied the flowers, telling Eron all about them; where they were from, their normal names, and their scientific names, how high the tallest one was, and lots of other stuff Eron had no interest in what so ever. Eron quickly made a decision the slip off and `get lost.' Quietly he slipped onto the nearby bushes and made his escape. "Eron? Eron!" Rocky called. Ignoring him, Eron went further away from him until he was no longer heard.

After walking around alone for about a half an hour, Kendi found him. "You've got Rocky really worried, Eron."

"What could happen to me? I'm barely 15 minutes away from the mansion."

"Doesn't matter. He's been paranoid ever since he heard about Brooke and Cloud."

"Oops, let's get back shall we?" Eron was startled when Kendi shook his head and sat down.

"I'm tired. Let's wait a while."

"Are you sure that's wise?"

"Yeah, he'll understand."

"WHAT I UNDERSTOOD WAS THAT YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BRING HIM RIGHT BACK!!" Rocky thundered.

"But…"

"I DON'T WANT YOUR EXCUSES!!"

"It's not a…"

"I DON'T WANT YOUR LIES EITHER!!"

Eron, who was outside of the room, turned to Rain. "Is he going to be okay?"

"He should be, it's the room I'm worried about. Excuse me," she said to the two passing by, "Would you be so kind as to fetch the fire extinguishers? It's getting a little toasty in there." The two nodded and jogged down the hall.

"You're worried about him burning the room?" Eron questioned.

"No, I'm worried about him burning down the house again."

"Again?"

"Yes, he burned down the last one after Myst told him she had kissed a boy."

"How long `till we get back?" Egan asked, slightly breathless.

"About a half and hour," I replied. "It was so stupid to forget him!" I scolded myself.

"I'm sure he won't mind, he's probably having a great time with Father," Sky reassured me.

"Maybe."

"You worry too much Myst," Kiara said. "I'm sure he's not heartbroken that we forgot him."

"I know," I said with a sigh. Running in silence, we finally reached the mansion and quickly entered. Smelling smoke, I ran down the hall and skidded to a halt in front of a closed door. When I opened the door, the smell became a thousand times more potent. Looking around the room, I saw that every inch of the whole room was burnt, not one spot left un-charred. "Hey mom, what made dad mad?" I asked as she walked by.

"Eron wandered off and Kendi was supposed to bring him right back but he didn't."

"Oh. So where is he?"

"Who, your father?"

"No, Eron."

"He's waiting for you in the guest room he slept in. I'll go get him for you."

"Bring him to the dining hall; I'm going to get something to eat."

"Okay."

As mom headed off I turned to the others, "Race you."

"You're on," Egan responded and we were off. He got out in front of me and I reached and grabbed his shirt, yanking him backwards and off his feet. Only a step later he grabbed my ankle, tripping me. Blaze and Kiara brushed past us at a run and we scrambled to our feet to follow. Just as they reached the door, Egan and I jumped onto their back, knocking them face first onto the floor. In response, they bucked us off, sending us sprawling on the floor just in front of the door.

"Hi mom," I greeted her appearance along with Eron with a goofy grin.

"Hi honey, get off of the floor," she responded calmly. Flipping myself upright I bounced into the room, turning around to stick my tongue out at Egan.

"I beat you!" I teased. He rolled his eyes and walked over to the table with me following.

When the food came we all dug in, soon emptying several large bowls of food. All of the sudden Sky froze with a drumstick in his hand. When he tried to say something, his voice was muffled by a large mouthful of mashed potatoes. Swallowing some of them he tried again. "Fwe haf to fwo!"

"The bees are flies?" Candace guessed. Sky shook his head no.

"Free to throw?" Blaze speculated. Again, Sky shook his head.

"He has a fro?" Kiara guessed.

"We have to go?" I said. Nodding vigorously, Sky pointed the drumstick at me.

"Waf she saif."

"What I said," I translated. "Come on people, let's go!" Pushing the stragglers out of the door, I hurried everyone into the woods.

"This is it," Sky whispered.
"Finally, that only took ten hours," I said in relief. In the wood in front of us was a long one story building with windows that reached its whole height but only were about a foot wide. "Now, the only problem would be getting inside. Any ideas?" It was silent for a bit the Sky spoke hesitantly.

"I have one, but you may not like it."

"Well…" I encouraged.

"Myst, I need you to act unconscious and the rest of you will be tied together on a rope; loosely of course, so you can get loose when you need it."

"Well, any objections, other ideas?" there were none. "Okay then, let's go."

A short while later, we started out again with me slung over Sky's shoulder and the others strung like pearls on a string behind him. As we neared the building I began to get a little nervous, and thinking about what could happen if we were found out didn't help. Sky stopped and talked with a guard just inside of the building. "I have what Drake wants and more. Let me in to see him."

"How'd you get them all Sky?" the guard asked.

"Simple, threaten this one and the others co-operate really nice." He swung me around and let me dangle in front of the guard. Laughing, he let inside.

Walking up to the front of a large room, Sky said, "Hey Drake," when the man turned around Sky tossed me to the floor in front of him. "Here."

When I looked up at Sky, I shuddered. His once caring eyes were blank and cold, and there was none of his trickster personality evident. Baring his razor-sharp teeth, Egan shook off his bonds and stepped forward. Quickly Drake grabbed the back of my shirt and pulled me off the ground. "You wouldn't want anything to happed to your girl now would you, Egan?" Egan stopped moving but glared at Drake. "Good job boy," Drake congratulated Sky.

"What did you do to him?" I demanded, twisting myself free. Dashing over to Egan I circled warily around Sky.

"Simple, your father disgraced me so I captured Sky and controlled him to find out a way to get back at Rocky and lo and behold, you came along."

"Controlling? You mean mind control?" Eron asked.

"Yes, it's a wonderful thing. You can also erase a person's memory and give them a new one, one that makes him hate the ones you hate, be loyal to whom you want them to be loyal to."

"You're a beast," Kiara snapped.

"Yes, I've been told that before. By Rocky actually."

"What about Brooke and Cloud!?" I demanded.

Drake threw his head back and roared with laughter. "They're on vacation. They should be back in a week or two."

Growling with anger, I leapt forward at Drake. Vaguely aware of the others following in my wake, I concentrated on Drake. As we fought the others tried to keep Sky corralled, not wanting to hurt him. They were succeeding, partially. Apparently they forgot that Sky had a sword, and were treating him like he was unarmed. When he suddenly drew his sword and jumped forward they were totally caught by surprise. By the time they had recovered, Sky had stabbed Kiara in the stomach and tossed her limp form to the floor. I caught all this out of the corner of my eye and jumped away from my fight with Drake and stood in front of Sky. "Sky, don't do this," I begged. No response came from the stony figure in front of me. "Please!" His only response was to leap forward at me. Twisting to the side, I dodged the lunge and brought my sword up. His own momentum impaled him on it up to the hilt. A strangled sound came out of Sky's mouth as his shaking hand touched the finger guard.

He looked up at me and his eyes were clear of their earlier cloudiness. "Thanks sis," he choked out before falling over backwards and tearing himself free of the blade. He landed heavily on the ground and struggled for every breath he took. Soon, his efforts stopped and he slowly died.

"Poetic isn't it. The brother gets controlled by an evil genius and the sister is forced to kill him to save her friends lives," Drake said with a contented smile. "Don't you love tragedies?"

I slowly turned away from Sky. "You are a typical bad guy aren't you Drake? You took all of your ideas from movies and books, carried the plans through, and wanted to claim them as your own." I took one step toward him, then another. "And like the villains you modeled yourself after, you too will be beaten."

"Confident for a little one aren't you?" Drake said, taking a step backwards.

"If I'm so powerless, why are you retreating?" Drake stopped and scowled at me. Wordlessly, the whole group charged him at once, forcing him backwards into another smaller room.

A half hour later we straggled out of the room, some of us a little cut up and tired. I woodenly walked over to where Sky lay. Falling to my knees beside him, I rested my head on his chest. Soon, my tears began to soak the material of his shirt. Gentle hands pulled me upright and Egan hugged me to his chest. "Pick him and his sword up," he instructed before handing me off to Candace. "Take care of her, we need to get out of here and it's not going to be easy." Candace scooped me up into her arms as they began making their way out of the building. Oriana picked up Kiara and the boys took point and fended off any of Drake's men that decided to try and stop us.

When we got home it was dinner time and we headed to the dining hall. My parents quickly stood up when we came in. "Honey? What…" my mom's voice faded as she saw Blaze come in with Sky. "Is he?" Again, she couldn't finish her sentence.

"I'm sorry Mrs. Capricion," Oriana said, moving forward and putting a hand on her shoulder. Mom turned and buried her face in dad's shirt.

"Put him in his room, I'll take care of the arrangements," dad said, his face drawn and haggard.

"Yes sir," Blaze said. Walking out of the room, I lead them down to Sky's room. Blaze put him down and changed his clothes.

"He looks so peaceful lying there," I thought. "He looks like he's sleeping." Reaching out I brushed my hand against his cold cheek. "Goodbye," I said softly. Turning around I walked out of the room and into the hall. There I stopped and looked at the wall. Spots swam into my vision and everything dimmed. The last thing I remember was Egan putting his arm around my waist and lowering me to the ground.

During the next two days, I walked around in a total daze, unable to even take care of my basic needs. Thankfully Oriana, Kiara, and Candace helped me through by making me eat and drink; making sure I bathed and had fresh clothes on in the mornings. On the day of the funeral, they made sure I ate and then turned me over to my parents. We went out to the family cemetery and sat down in the front row, with everyone who knew Sky sitting behind us. Near the end of the funeral Candace got up and walked over until she stood in front of me. Looking down at me with tear-filled eyes, she spoke. "My request to my superiors was just accepted." As I looked on confused she opened a box she was carrying. "This came in yesterday and I altered it slightly." She handed me a bundle of fabric. I unfolded it and gasped with surprise. "Sky was to become another leader for our group," Candace choked out as my eyes filled with tears. The uniform I was holding was a dark blue, like the sky just before sunset. A fox paw was a shiny black surrounded by a very dark red heart. `Sky Ocean' was sewn in gold about the heart.

"Thank you," I said in a whisper, a lump forming in my throat.

"This is…was Sky's," she said, holding a sheathed sword out to me. I accepted it as the tears overflowed and ran down my face. Turning away, Candace made her way down the aisle and into the house. It remained silent for a bit then everyone began shuffling away, leaving me alone at the gravesite; looking at the new headstone.

"Myst!" Egan's irate voice cut through my reminiscing. Looking back at him, I saw he was struggling to keep our rambunctious three-year old twins, Shadow and Cerin, out of the mud puddles made by the recent rains.

"I'll be right there," I called back with a smile.

"But we're going to be late or the reunion again!" he complained.

"Kiara and Blaze will be later then we'll be," I pointed out.

"Yeah, but Blaze still won't let her go faster then a slow walk."

"Just give me a sec." I turned back to the gravestone and read it one more time. `Storm Sky Ocean, Born 1983, Died 2003. Beloved Brother and Friend."

"Myst!!"

"I'm coming, I coming. Hold you horses." Dodging puddles, I ran back to where they were waiting. "Let's go then," I invited, taking the lead.

"Gladly."
