Chapter 10- Starting Out

"Man, I'm stiff!" I exclaimed.

"That's what spending the last three week in the hospital will do to you," Kiara shot back.

"Aw shut up. Sky, where are we going first?" I asked.

"We are not going anywhere. I am going to Drake's hideout."

"I don't think so mister! I just found you and I'm not about to let you go!" I snapped.

"Wait, wait. Who found who?" Sky said with a smirk.

"Ohhhhh you!" I took a deep breath and calmed myself down with a force of will. "I'm going with you Sky, and nothing you say can stop me," I said in a very determined tone of voice.

"Fine, let's go then," he relented after a moment.

"Hold it, if Myst goes I go," Egan said stepping forward.

"And if Egan goes I go," Oriana chimed in.

"I'm with Oriana," Eron also stepped forward, laying a hand on her shoulder.

Blaze sighed. "I guess I'll come along too. Someone needs to look after Eron."

"I don't want to stay alone, I'll come too." Kiara said.

"You won't be alone," I pointed out, "Candace will still be here."

"No she won't." Candace dropped her bag behind us. "Someone needs to lead this bunch of misfits and I'm the best person for the job."

"Misfits huh?" Sky cocked an eyebrow.

"Yes, misfits. Every single one of you is a class one misfit." She planted her hands on her hips. "You were about to leave without any food or clothing."

"But I suppose you brought them so were all ready to go," Sky said dryly.

"Yes."

"So can we stop talking and go already? We haven't even left and I'm getting tired of you two already," Blaze complained.

"Good idea, let's go."

"I know where we are now," Sky said.

"Finally! It's only been two days of `I think it's this way' and `Oops, it was the other way.'" I said in exasperation.

"And we're out of food," Oriana said.

"Well, if you want food, I smell some. There's a small pack of animals around here somewhere," I pointed out.

"Okay, split up into groups of two and we'll meet back here in an hour," Candace instructed. Everyone split up and disappeared into the woods.

Egan and I quietly glided down a path, looking for the animals we were hunting. Egan suddenly stopped and looked around uneasily. "What's wrong Egan?" I whispered.

He slowly shook his head. "I don't know, something feels wrong."

My eyes scanned the forest, trying to locate the source of Egan's unease. Finding nothing, I turned back to him. "Maybe it was just the wind Egan."

"Maybe," he said doubtfully, but turned and continued walking down the path.

Golden eyes glittered as they watched us walk down the path. `Just a little bit more,' the man thought to himself, his lips curling into a smile.

Candace and Sky searched the forest, an uncomfortable silence between them. "Sky, about earlier, I…" Candace began, but was silenced by a finger on her lips.

"Forget about it Candace, you were just protecting your group."

Candace smiled, immensely pleased. The smile quickly faded and her ears flattened as a bitten-off cry of pain echoed through the forest.

Blaze and Kiara walked down the path they had found, the latter babbling endlessly to the former. Ears slowly flattening, a warning growl started in his throat. Kiara took no notice and continued babbling on and on. "Shut up!!" Blaze finally burst out. "If you don't all of the potential food will run away!!"

Stopping suddenly, Kiara stared at him in shock and growing anger. Spinning around on her heel she stalked away. "Kiara! Kiara, I'm sorry, you were just driving me nuts!"

"Driving you nuts huh? Why didn't you just ask me to stop talking? Is that so hard?"

"Look, I said I was sorry, what more do you want?!"

"I want you to mean it!"

"I do!"

"No you don't! You're just saying it to make me happy!"

Blaze's reply was cut off as a bitten-off cry of pain echoed through the forest, shutting them both up.

Eron and Oriana walked through the woods, silence reigning in the forest. "How old are you?" Oriana asked in a whisper.

"I'm 11. You?" Eron answered.

"12. I'm older then you!" she said in an excited whisper.

Eron rolled his eyes. `Women' "Do you really think the animals are this way.

Eron sniffed the air and shook his head. "No, they're back the other way."

Oriana grabbed his hand and pulled his backwards. "Then let's go the other way." Smiling he shook his head and allowed himself to be pulled along. Oriana's ears picked up then flattened as a cry of pain echoed through the forest.

Walking slowly into a clearing, Egan and I studied it for any dangers or animals. Finding none, we proceeded into the center of it. A sharp pain suddenly lanced through my shoulder and I pitched forward with a loud cry. Dimly I saw Egan whirl around and stand over me as my sight slowly faded into darkness.

Egan growled as he faced the men now jumping out into the clearing from the surrounding brush. They leapt at him quickly and he only managed to hurt one of them before they over-powered him.

Five frantic people burst into the clearing where they were supposed to meet and immediately began talking so rapidly that none of them were able to understand one another. The one calmer person there took a deep breath and bellowed, "SHUT UP!!" All eyes turned to Sky and silence fell over the clearing. "Much better. Is everyone here?"

"No, Egan and Myst are missing," Kiara said.

"Did anyone see which way they went?" Sky questioned.

"Yeah, that way." Blaze pointed down a barely visible path to their right.

"Let's go." Sky led the group down the path, with Blaze soon taking the lead because of his superior tracking skills. He soon held his hand up for them to stop as they entered a clearing.

"Let's see here, two people walked in the clearing this way,"

"That has to be Egan and Myst," Eron cut in.

"Yes. One fell down here. Several other footprints come in from the forest and are lost in what looks like a scuffle where other's footprints are lost. It looks like they drug one of them a bit then picked them up and headed back into the woods."

Looking at him in amazement, Oriana said "How can you tell all that from a bunch of scuff marks?"

"Experience. Now we should go after them."

"Agreed," Sky said. "Let's go.

When I started recovering, I was being jounced around on someone's shoulder. Unconsciously, I shifted to a more comfortable position, starling the one who was carrying me. "Hey, I think she's waking up!" he called to the others.

"No she isn't. The tranquilizer doesn't ware off for another half-hour at least," another reassured him, glancing over his shoulder at me.

"Good." They continued running in silence. Slowly, feelings fully returned to my arms and legs, making them tingle a little. About 15 minutes later I was sure I had complete control over them but still hung like a sack of potatoes. When they stopped, instead of letting them lay me down on the ground I stood up and looked my captor in the eye. Laughing at his surprised expression I said, "You don't have a very good memory do you Kendi?"

"It's been four years Myst, you can't expect me to remember everything," he protested in his defense.

"No, just the important things like how tranqs never worked long on me." Turning to Egan I bent down and pulled the gag out.

"What…?" he sputtered.

"Don't worry Egan I know these morons," I assured him. When he still looked confused, I told him, "I'll explain later. We have to go now."

"Here, see this?" Blaze pointed to a certain point on the ground. Kiara looked close then shook her head.

"No." Blaze sighed.

"Someone was put down here, on their feet it looks like. And over here," Blaze got up and moved over to another point, picking up a length of rope from the ground. "I think someone was untied here. They then walked away that way," he finished, pointing.

"Then let's go," Kiara said impatiently.

"Wait," Sky said, distracted. He suddenly smiled. "Follow me guys. If this is who I think it is, I know a shortcut." He walked into the woods, making the others follow or loose him.

A mansion rose out of the forest in front of them and they went in, me talking with Kendi the whole way. "He's waiting for you in here," Kendi said, opening a door revealing a dark interior.

"Who is?" I questioned, cocking his head.

"Who else?" Kendi smiled and pushed me into the room, shutting the door behind me and leaving Egan outside.

"Hello Myst." Light flooded the room, revealing a broad-chested man with jet-black hair.

"Daddy!" I cried, flinging myself into his arms for a hug. "I missed you!"

"So I did I little one," he said warmly.

"But did you have to kidnap me like that? You've probably got all of my friends' worried sick!"

"Sorry Myst, but I couldn't resist," he apologized, smiling like a guilty little boy. "So who is that boy you're with?" he asked, sobering instantly.

"Oh daddy, you don't have to worry about him; he's a really nice boy."

"Yes I'm sure he is, but I still want to meet him."

"No prob." Opening the door, I invited Egan in. "Daddy wants to meet you."

Egan hesitated, some of the blood draining from his face. "Are…are you sure that's a good idea?"

"Yeah, don't worry. Daddy'll love you." I reached out and pulled him inside the room. "Daddy, this is Egan."

My dad Rocky studied Egan from head to toe, making him squirm. "Hi kid," he finally said.

"H-hi M-Mr. Capricion," Egan stammered out. "I'm Egan Quickfire."

"Quickfire huh? Your dad Josh?"

"Y-Yeah," Egan said in confusion.

"Good man. How's he doin'?"

"Last time I saw him he was doing okay," Egan answered, some of the color returning to his face. Dad nodded then turned back to me.

"So what brings you out here?" he questioned me.

I quickly sobered. "Dad I'll tell you if you promise not to do anything."

"I promise. Not what is it?"

Taking a deep breath I said, "Drake has Brooke and Cloud."

"Here we are," Sky said as they emerged into a very large clearing.

"Where exactly is `here'?" Candace inquired.

"Home sweet home." Sky entered a code into a key pad mounted on the wall.

"I thought Myst said it was a shack!" Kiara exclaimed.

"Compared to the other one it is." Sky spotted a silver haired women working on a nearby flower bed. "Hey mom, didn't dad hire you people to do that for you?" he asked her.

"Yes he did dear, but they didn't do it the way I liked it, so I fired them." She stood up and brushed her hands off. "Welcome home dear."

"Do you know if Myst is here?" Sky asked.

"Yes, Kendi brought her in about ten minutes ago. She's in the small study with your father and that boy."

"Thanks mom." Sky leaned over and brushed a kiss against her cheek. "I'll introduce you to my friends at dinner mom."

"Okay honey. See you then." Leading the whole entourage down the corridor, Sky headed towards the study. The others kept gawking at everything, oohhing and ahhhing over almost every tapestry that was hung on the walls. They had just arrived at the door to the study when a very loud shout of "WHAT!!" came from inside the room. Quickly Sky threw open the door and hurried inside.

"Calm down dad, we'll get them back," I assured him.

"That's where we were going, dad. You just sidetracked us," Sky said, making me wince.

Dad became extremely quiet and his dark green eyes narrowed to slits. "I think I'll…… go help the cook with dinner." Sky beat a hasty retreat.

"Daddy, these are the rest of my friends. They're going to help me and Sky find them, okay?" I said carefully.

"At least take Kendi with you," Dad urged.

"No, we'll do this ourselves," I said, crossing my arms.

Dad sighed and shook his head. "Fine, but you're staying here tonight. You can leave first thing tomorrow morning."

"Thank you daddy!" I threw my arms around him and hugged him tightly. Scooping me up in his arms, he tossed me up so I landed sitting on his shoulder.

"To the dining room!" Dad said, emphatically pointing to the ceiling. Cheering, Dad led the charge to where the food was waiting.

"That was delicious Mrs. Heartsmen!" Sky exclaimed to the cook after devouring eight pieces of homemade pizza and three large bowls of ravioli.

"How did you eat all of that Sky?" Candace asked in bafflement.

"I have a hollow leg," he said.

"And a hollow head," I muttered under my breath.

"Hey, I heard that!" Sky said, shoving me off of my chair and sending me sprawling on the ground.

"Mommy!" I whined.

"Sky, don't push your sister." I smirked as he frowned.

"And Myst, don't tease your brother," Dad added, turning my smirk into a pout and his frown into a smirk. "Now to bed with all of you!" Dad ordered.

"But daddy, it's only 9!" I complained.

"No buts, you have a big day ahead of you. Myst, show them the guest rooms in the west wing."

With a heavy sigh I muttered, "Yes Daddy," and walked out of the dining hall.

"Girls on the left, boys on the right," I instructed. "Pick any rooms but the ones on the end. Those are mine and Sky's." Suddenly, Sky and I found ourselves completely alone in the hallway.

"Well, that was quick," Sky commented as we headed towards our rooms.

"I think they like the rooms, but I'm not quite sure," I said sarcastically.

"Just a little."

"Well, goodnight, Sky."

"Night."
