Chapter 9- Learning the Truth
Sky burst back into the room, followed by a semi-angry Candace who was demanding to know who "they" were. Sky stopped and looked around at us, surprised. "I thought you guys were hiding who you are?"
"We are; the others went out for dinner and we thought it would be safe to change." I said, studying him closely, knowing something was amiss. He never talks like this, something's wrong. Candace moved in front of Sky and planted her hands on her hips. "Would you be so kind as to tell me who `they' are?" Sky sighed heavily and his shoulders drooped. "The `they' I was referring to was Drake and his men." Everyone's eyes widened and a deathly silence filled the room. No! Please let me be wrong! I thought desperately. "I've been cont…" his voice faded out and his eyes closed like he was fighting someone inside of himself. When he looked back up he looked over at OrHieia, who shivered under his gaze. "There's something wrong with his eyes, like something's missing. It could just be that I don't know him that well," she thought to herself, looking away from him. "I've been working with Drake for about three months now, I'm sorry." Candace's eyes hardened into a sharp gaze that I knew well from before. When she looked like that she was hard and unforgiving, dangerous to be around. She stepped forward and grabbed Sky by the front of his shirt, lifting him slightly off of the ground. "You lying, filthy, traitor! You would have gotten us all killed!" She half-threw him backwards and he stumbled, landing in a chair. My shock finally wore of and my eyes filled with tears. My brother is a traitor. I thought numbly. My thoughts were interrupted as Candace stalked toward the door and Blaze went up to Sky and hissed, "I'll kill you scum." At this Candace stopped and turned around. "Don't bother, he's not worth it." She whirled back around, anger evident in her gaze. Behind the anger was the pain of having been betrayed by a friend. Blaze glared at Sky then followed her out of the room. Eron gave Sky a sympathetic gaze but followed his brother. I watched them go, and then turned to Sky, wiping the tears off of my face. "Please Sky, tell me your joking," I pleaded. He got up and took a step towards me holding out a hand. "Myst…I didn't want to…" He took another step towards me and I whirled around and left the room.
Sky watched as his baby sister fled the room, his heart clenching as he saw the pain I was in. I am so stupid! he berated himself. He started to go after me, but Egan stood in his way. "What kind of brother are you?! You don't deserve to be near her. if you ever do, I'll kill you myself," he said viciously, meaning every word of it. Sky flinched and rocked backwards, not surprised but hurt at his words. He sat down heavily on the chair and rested his head on his hands. He heard footsteps approaching and felt a hand rest gently on his shoulder. He looked up to see OrHieia standing there, looking into his eyes. "I believe you." He gave her a small smile of thanks.
Kiara was totally caught off guard by Sky's revelation. Of all the people, I would suspect him the least. But as she studied the genuine reactions of love and pain in his eyes, she started to change her mind. He really does love and care for Myst. He accepts what he could have done and the reactions to it. She slowly got up after OrHieia talked to him and stood in front of him. He looked up at me, expecting another rebuke. She gave him a small smile. "So do I, let's go find Myst."
Egan ran down the hallway, looking for me. He had no right to come here just to break her heart. He's not doing that again if I have a say in it. He thought to himself. He entered the lobby and saw me curled up on the couch in the corner. My head was down and covered by my long, silver hair. He ran over to me and pulled me into his embrace and stroked my hair. "Shh, it's okay. Sky's a jerk, he shouldn't have come back." He realized that that was the wrong thing to say and flinched, not only because of his words, but because my claws dug deep into his chest. I shoved his away, leaving a gash in his chest, and ran out of the building. Kiara, OrHieia, and Sky came running into the lobby. "Where's Myst?" Kiara demanded. Egan mutely pointed outside and they ran outside. Egan stood there stunned for a bit then ran after them.
Kurama, Yusuke, and Kuwabara were walking through the forest, heading for a clearing good for training. Yusuke and Kuwabara were constantly fighting over who would win in a fight. He heard running footsteps approaching from behind us and turned to see me running by. "Myst? What's wrong?" He called as he saw my tear streaked face. She didn't answer and ran off.
"Who was that?" Kuwabara asked with a blank look on his face.
"Idiot." Yusuke glared at him then turned towards Kurama. "Is that the same Myst we've been taking care of?" Sky, OrHieia, and Kiara ran past cutting Kurama's reply off. The boys watched them run past, totally baffled as to what was going on. Kurama opened his mouth to speak, but was again cut off by Egan running by. Kurama hesitated for a bit to make sure no one else was coming then spoke.
"To answer your question Yusuke, yes that is the same Myst." Yusuke nodded then went to follow us. "I wouldn't do that Yusuke; this is probably something that they need to take care of themselves." Yusuke stopped reluctantly and followed the rest of them down the path to the clearing.
I ran blindly through the forest, barely able to see through the veil of tears. I vaguely remember running past a group of people on the path, but I couldn't tell who they were. How could he…how could both of them do that? I felt like my heart was being crushed into a thousand tiny pieces. The two people I had loved then most... I finally tripped in a clearing and sat on the ground. Tears ran down my face, leaving their salty trails for others to follow. I pulled up my legs and rested my head on them, sobs racking my body and making it hard to breathe. I heard noised behind me but ignored them. If it's a monster that wants to kill me, good. But instead of a monster, I heard my brother. "Myst…I..." he moved forward to hug me. I quickly got up and backed away from him. "Why Sky? You said you loved me!" He tried to explain, saying, "I do Myst, the only reason…" "I don't want your excuses Sky! Did you do the same thing to Brooke and Cloud?!" Shock rode freely on his face as I turned and ran from him once again. He started after me but Egan ran up, pushed him backwards, and continued after me.
I fled through the forest, its beautiful hues of green and brown combining and blurring through my tears. I heard someone running behind me but I paid them no mind as I burst into another clearing. The flowers that covered the ground combined into on mass of swirling colors, the pine trees the rimmed the field blurred into a river of evergreen that ebbed and flowed as the tears fell from my eyes. Someone suddenly grabbed my from behind, and pulled me down into their lap as they sat down. I thrashed around in a panic, clawing at him, trying to get free. My captor flinched as I scored hits on his hands and legs. "Myst, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that. It was totally uncalled for," a welcome, familiar voice apologized. I stopped struggling and sat there, trembling.
"Why did he do that Egan?" I asked with a pain-tightened voice.
"I don't know Myst; he must have had a reason. You should give him a chance." As he said this I saw and unidentifiable emotion flash through his eyes for a second before disappearing. He looked down at me, concern and sympathy evident in his soft blue eyes, making my heart clench painfully.
He's just like Sky was. "I don't know if I can," I said, looking down and starting to cry again. Egan gently stroked my hair and slowly rocked side to side in a comforting manner. My sobs slowly stilled and I was soon asleep.
Egan looked down at me and smiled. She looks so peaceful when she's asleep. He carefully picked me up without waking me and started walking back to the hotel. When he got to where Sky, OrHieia, and Kiara were still waiting, Sky looked up and his eyes tightened angrily.
"What did you do to her?" he demanded when he saw Egan carrying me.
"Nothing, but anything I could ever do to her would be better then what you did," he replied harshly. All of the anger drained out of Sky's eyes and was replaced by hurt and guilt. OrHieia gasped.
"That was totally uncalled for Egan!"
"Was it?" he replied scornfully. Kiara's eyes narrowed in anger.
"Egan…" she ground out, a definite warning in her tone. Egan ignored her and walked off.
They shouldn't trust him; he'll just get them killed. He thought to himself, he never noticed the two tears that traced their lonely paths down my cheeks.
I desperately fought with my tears while trying not to let Egan know I was awake. "He didn't mean it; he didn't mean a word of it." I smiled grimly inside. "But he'll see; I'll take his even if he really doesn't want me to." I thought about everything had said, both now and earlier and felt a jolt. "He's just trying to protect me." I smiled slightly and allowed myself to stir slightly in his arms.
He looked down at me and smiled. "Good morning sleepy head," he greeted. I looked at the darkening sky and giggled.
"Morning? It's more like night now," I teased. He smiled and walked silently for a bit. "I'm not paralyzed Egan, I can walk." Egan blinked in surprise then blushed slightly and put me down.
"Sorry," he apologized sheepishly.
"Oh lighten up Egan, I was only teasing you," I said with a roll of my eyes. He gave me a little half smile as we entered the hotel and walked up to our room.
When we got there, Candace was sitting cross-legged on the floor in the kitchen with a sword resting on her lap. Yusuke and the others looked kinda nervous and defHieitly confused as they sat in the living room. Warily, I studied Candace and found her staring at her sword. She finally looked up at me and there was a maniacal glow in her eyes. "Candace…?" I said slowly and cautiously. The glow suddenly died and she blinked in surprise, as if just seeing us.
"Myst? Egan? Why are you in here?" she asked in confusion.
"We live here, remember?" I replied slowly.
"Oh yeah!' she jumped to her feet and sheathed her sword perkily. The others shrugged as I threw a questioning glance their way. It probably would be better just to let it drop, I decided.
All of the chairs in the living room were full when I went in, but Eron got up and sat on the floor, making his twin brother roll his eyes. "Thanks Eron," I said, sitting down in the chair.
"No prob," he answered, looking up at me from the floor. The door opened and everyone looked over to see Kiara, Sky, and OrHieia walk inside.
"Leave," Candace ordered Sky, pointing towards the door.
"But I--" Sky protested.
"Leave!" Candace said more forcefully.
"I just want to--"
"LEAVE!" Candace was shouting now. Blaze got up and stood next to Candace, his fiery red eyes hard.
"We are not asking you Sky," he said coldly. OrHieia placed a hand on Sky's shoulder.
"You'd better go Sky," she said softly. Sky glanced over at me, reluctant to leave.
"We can talk later," I said, guessing what he wanted. Sky nodded and reluctantly left the room.
It was quiet in the room for a bit before Kurama said, "Could you kindly explain what is going on here?" Candace sat down then began to explain as Hiei listened coldly from the windowsill. As soon as she began I got up and left the room; the subject was still to painful for me. Egan followed as I changed into me fox form and left the building. It quickly grew dark outside as I wandered aimlessly around outside.
<We should go back inside> Egan said softly, steering me back inside. I was soon curled up on my pallet, emotionally exhausted but determined to give Sky another chance.
The next morning I awoke to the door opening softly. I got up to see who it was, shifting into my human form. Candace beat me to the door and by the look on her face I could safely guess that it was Sky. Her eyes blazed with fury as she drew her sword. "I told you to leave!!" she yelled.
"No!!" I yelled, jumping between the sword and its intended victim.
Utter silence descended over the room. I reached up and put my hand over the slice on my chest, caused by the path of Candace's sword. The sword clattered to the ground when it slipped out of her limp hand. Sky caught me as my knees buckled beneath me.
"Myst? Are you okay?" Sky's ice-blue eyes widened in panic as he looked down at me, lying motionless in his lap.
"Just a scratch," I whispered, managing a small smile before I passed out.
***************
Sky looked up at Candace angrily. "What did you do that for?!" he yelled.
"I was aiming for you!" she shot back, kneeling at my other side and looking at the wound.
"You shouldn't have been aiming at anyone!" he retorted, trying to stop the bleeding.
"If you weren't a traitor I wouldn't have to!" she replied, applying a bandage to the wound.
"I'm not a traitor!" Sky insisted, moving me over toward the couch.
"So then what are you?" she asked half-angrily as she shoved everyone out the living room doorway.
"Myst's brother," Sky said simply, laying me gently on the couch.
"Right," Candace replied sarcastically. "and what a great brother you are."
"Hey, you're the one who almost cut her in half!" Sky protested vehemently. Candace opened her mouth then shut it and muttered something that no one understood or wanted to understand.
"I didn't slice her in half!" she finally protested.
"Close enough," Sky muttered as he turned to me.
"What happened?"
Sky half turned to the sleepy and confused Kurama standing in the doorway to his room. "Sky made me almost slice Myst in half!" "Candace almost killed Myst trying to get me!" Candace and Sky burst simultaneously.
"What?" Kurama asked, getting even more confused. Sky and Candace repeated what they had just said, again simultaneously.
Kurama sighed and turned to Kiara. "Myst was just protecting Sky from Candace," she quickly explained. "But shouldn't we be taking care of her?" she continued, pointing towards my motionless form.
"We should take her to the hospital," Keiko said from the doorway, having come over when she heard the yelling.
"Good idea," Kurama walked over and picked me up and headed to the hospital. The ER doc took one look at me and sent me to the intensive care unit.
Keiko quickly took charge. "You three go home, get changed, and bring in some fresh clothes for Myst," she ordered Sky, Candace, and Kurama. After doing so, Candace and Sky headed back to the hospital and left Kurama and Yusuke to try and clean all the blood out of the carpet and couch.
***************
Candace and Sky walked up to where I was, fighting the whole time. Keiko snatched the clothes away from Candace and glared at us. "Be quiet or you'll wake up Myst."
"But she's unconscious!" Sky protested.
"Exactly, now go down to the lobby and stay there. And don't make a lot of noise, there are people here trying to sleep." With that speech over, she shut the door in our faces. Candace and Sky complied, but not happily. Sky sat there for about a minute then got up and left the lobby, ignoring Candace's taunt of `Are you leaving you sister again?'
Sky stalked into the forest for a ways, then stopped in a small clearing and looked up at the stars. Hearing a noise behind him, he tensed then whirled around, his hand automatically going to where his sword would be if he had it. "Oh, it's just you," he said before looking back up at the stars, still tense.
"Just me?" Eron cocked an eyebrow.
"Sorry, that's not what I meant. I thought you were going to be Candace, coming to yell at me again."
"She means well, she's just really protective of her little `family.'"
"I noticed," Shy said dryly. Eron walked over next to Sky and laid his hand on his shoulder.
"You really should be inside with your little sister, she loves you."
"Like Candace would let me near her," Sky said with a heavy sigh.
"I'll make sure Candace doesn't bother you. Go to your sister." Eron fell silent for minute then turned and walked back towards the hospital. Sky soon turned and followed in his wake.
***************
Several people chattering and a nurse futilely trying to shut them up greeted my ears as I slowly woke up. Opening my eyes, I saw that all of my friends; except Eron and Sky were there. "Hey," I croaked weakly, "can't a girl get any sleep around here?" Immediately, everyone's attention was on me.
Exclamations of "You're alright!" "You're awake!" "Finally!" answered me. Smiling weakly around at everyone, I tried to sit up. This was instantly stopped by the nurse, who gave me a sound scolding.
"Where's Sky?" I questioned once she was finished and starting fussing with my IV.
"He left of course," Candace began. "What more could-"
"I would never leave my favorite sister Candace, no matter how much you would like me to." My eyes lit up as Sky walked into the room.
"Sky!" I said weakly, holding my arms out to him. He quickly strode across the room and sat on the edge of my bed, enveloping me in a gentle hug. I smirked over his shoulder at a fuming Candace.
"Okay, visiting hours are over, time for you guys to leave," the nurse announced, shooing everyone out of the room. When Sky pulled away from me, I whimpered a little and clung tightly to him. Sky smoothed my hair with his hand and looked helplessly at the nurse. She sighed and shook her head. "I guess you have to stay. I don't want her to hurt herself." Sky climbed fully onto the bed as the nurse was leaving and I snuggled down into Sky's side. He draped his arm over me and I sighed happily and want to sleep. The nurse smiled softly and quietly closed the door.
***************
"What's Myst doing with that scum!!?" Candace's angry yell jerked Sky and me awake.
"Gee, I wonder why? Maybe because she's my sister? Whether you like it or not, that's what she is," Sky told her, annoyed at being awaked that way. Candace glared at him then stalked over. Reaching down, she went to grab me and yank me away. "Don't you dare touch her," Sky warned in a low voice, freezing Candace mid-reach. Candace looked at him then continued reaching for me. She suddenly jumped backwards, holding her bleeding hand.
She looked in astonishment from her hand to me. "What was that for?!" She cried, inspecting the neat row of small holes on her palm.
I grinned coldly, baring my small, razor-like teeth. "Didn't you hear my brother? Does `don't you dare touch her' ring a bell? I agree with Sky on this one. Don't touch me, Captain." The emphasis I placed on her name made her wince, but she soon glared at me.
"Why are you so dead set on staying with a traitor?!" she demanded.
"He is not a traitor! I'm sure he has a perfectly good reason for doing what he did, I just don't know what it is… yet." I looked hopefully up at Sky. He sighed heavily.
"Drake has Cloud and Brooke." This simple statement stunned me.
"Who are they?" Eron asked from the doorway.
"My older brother and sister," Sky explained. The room fell silent and Candace's face went deathly pale. Her mouth opened and closed several times before she turned on her heel and fled the room.
"We'll be glad to help you find your siblings Sky," Kurama offered when their group came in for a visit and hour later.
Sky shook his head. "No, this is something that I have to do myself."
"I'm coming with you," I said firmly.
"No you're not Myst. You are staying here, where you're safe."
"I don't think so mister. They're related to me as much as they are to you. Don't try to stop me Storm Sky Capricion!!"
"Storm?!?!" came the bewildered cry from everyone in the room. Looking miserable, Sky ducked his head to cover the red creeping up his cheeks.
"You're not supposed to call me that!" he whispered fiercely to me.
"Oops, sorry," I said, looking totally unrepentant. "Storm is his first name, which he absolutely hates and I'm not supposed to call him," I explained to the others.
Kiara's eyes sparkled as she tried to look serious. Failing miserably, she mock glared at me. "Myst! You should be ashamed of yourself!"
Cocking my head at her, I gave her a bemused smile. "Oh yeah!" Taking a deep breath, I rearranged my features into a fake deeply sorry kinda thing. "Sorry Sky. I won't ever call you that again."
"That's what you said the last 20 times!" he exclaimed.
"But I mean it this time!"
"Yeah right," he muttered under his breath. "That's what she said the last ten times."
