Chapter 8 - Running into family

Responding to the scratch at the door, Candace got up and opened the said object. Five dripping wet foxes came tumbling into the room. "STOP!" she yelled. Freezing, we looked at her nervously as the others come running in.

"Well, at least they're clean," Kurama pointed out, trying to be helpful. The others glared at him and he shut up.

Keiko sighed. "I'll get the towels," she said in an exasperated tone of voice.

<What did you guys go?> Candace asked in a frustrated tone.

<There's a pond out back and we played in it…kinda,> I answered.

<Kinda?> she asked with a raised eyebrow. I explained while we were dried off.

When they were finished I looked over at Egan and started laughing. <You look like cotton candy on legs!>

<So do you,> he said, his ears laid flat on his head. I stopped laughing and joined him.

"Aww, they're so cute!" Keiko cooed. Egan and I looked at each other and took off to avoid the smothering cuddling that Kiara was going through.

We ran into the hallway outside of the room and almost tripped someone in the hall. <Sorry!> I called over my shoulder instinctively.

<No prob,> he answered; his voice full of humor. I froze and looked behind me to see a grinning brown fox in human form, his green eyes sparkling with humor.

My eyes opened wide. <SKY!> I yelled as I leapt at him.

He knelt down and picked me up, holding me above his head. <How ya doing, baby sister?>

My tail was wagging furiously as he held me. <I'm not a baby,> I said, repeating our often-said lines. He smiled and put me down. <Come on,> I said, going outside. <Hey guys, meet me by the pond!> I called. We made our way to the pond and sat down to wait for the others. With Egan's help, I turned into my human form and gave Sky a big hug. "I missed you so much!"

He returned the hug. "Same here, Myst." I turned around and sat in his lap, he putting is arms lovingly around me as the others made their ways over to us. Candace came around the corner last and when she saw Sky she froze. I looked at her then at Sky, who was also frozen. I looked at Candace, then at Sky, back at Candace, and back at Sky. I looked over at Kiara with a confused look on her face, She just shrugged, also confused.

"What's this all about Myst?" Kiara asked, in her human form by now.

"This is my brother Sky, we ran into him in the hallway."

"More like almost tripped me in the hallway, but that's beyond the point," Sky cut in, smiling.

I elbowed him in the stomach. "They didn't need to know that!"

He laughed, rubbing his stomach. "Are you going to introduce me to your friends?"

I smiled sheepishly. "Yeah, sorry. That's Blaze, Candace, Egan, Eron, Kiara, and Oriana," I introduced, pointing to them in turn. It was silent for a minute and I started fidgeting. "So what are you doing here?"

Sky started laughing at the sudden change of subject. "I heard about some foxes that tore up a hotel room and figured that one of them would be you." I looked up and him, surprised, and then burst out laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe. Sky shook me and said half-urgently, half-teasingly, "Breathe Myst, breathe." But this only made me laugh even harder. By now the only thing keeping me off of the ground was Sky's arms.

"Stop Sky, you're going to kill her!" Egan yelled.

"What? Stop what?" Sky said, totally confused. I laughed even harder, if that was possible. All of the sudden I stopped laughing and slumped down.

Egan came running over. "Myst? Myst? What did you do?" he yelled at Sky.

Sky looked down at me and shrugged casually. "She does this all the time."

"Does what?" Oriana asked.

"Laugh so hard she can't breathe and passes out." Sky explained.

"How long does she stay like this?" Egan asked, concerned.

"Calm down lover boy, she'll come around in a few seconds." Sky shook his head. Egan stared at him with his mouth hanging open, surprised.

"Close your mouth Egan, or else you'll eat bugs," I said from Sky's lap.

Egan started and looked down at me, relieved that I was awake. "You're awake!"

"Duh. If I wasn't, I couldn't be talking to you now could I?" Everyone started laughing as Egan snapped his jaw shut and smiled.

"Who's this?" Kurama asked from behind us, startling us.

"Hi Kurama, this is my brother, Sky," I introduced.

"Myst…Sky…do I see a connection here?"

I giggled. "That's not the half of it. My other brother is Cloud, my Dad is Rocky, my Mom is Rain, and my older sister is Brooke."

Kurama chuckled. "A definite connection. Are they coming too?"

I cocked my head then looked up at Sky. "Are they?"

He shook his head. "No they're not," he said softly

"Sky? What's wrong?" I frowned worried.

"Nothing." He put on a fake smile. "Forget about it."

`This isn't the Sky I knew. Something's wrong but it's no use to ask him about it, he's a stubborn as a mule,' I thought to myself.

Kurama cleared his throat, interrupting my musings. "Dinner's almost ready. Would you like to join us Sky?"

"Huh? Oh yeah, sure." He started to get up but stopped. "Umm, Myst? You need to get up." I gave him an innocent smile and pranced off. He shook his head ruefully and followed. On the way back we changed back into our fox forms and were let inside by Kurama and Sky. Once we got to the room, the others, who were used to the constant addition to our little, okay maybe not so little, "Family", greeted Sky. Candace, Sky, and the other non-foxes sat at the table and began eating. I ate facing the others so I could watch Sky and Candace flirt all dinner. After they finished, everyone headed back to their room, except for me, Candace, and Sky. They headed for Sky's room, #8, as I trailed them. I almost made it to the room, except Egan grabbed me by the tail and drug me to my bed. I twisted around and bit at him, narrowly missing. He let go and sat down, surprised. I laid down and pouted, keeping an eye on the door. About 10 minutes later Candace walked back in and went to bed. The next morning Sky joined us for breakfast. After they finished, Sky approached Candace. "I'm going for a walk, do you want to come?" he asked, pointedly ignoring the others.

I cocked my head. `Something about his tone, it's different, like someone else is talking.'

Egan looked over at me. <What's wrong Myst?>

<Nothing,> I said distractedly. Candace and Sky left. I had apparently missed her answer.

As Sky walked out of the room he felt my eyes on him and knew that I suspected something. He frowned, not liking what he was doing but helpless to stop it. Apparently Candace noticed his foul mood. "Sky? What's wrong?" she asked, concerned.

"Nothing," he forced a fake smile. "Come on, let's go." They walked out into the forest with Sky leading her. "So, tell me about yourself," he invited her. Candace smiled and began.

"Well, I'm 25, I have no siblings, my parents died in a fire about 4 yrs ago, and I'm a good fighter. How about you?"

"Well, I'm 26, you already know about my family. My parents live in a shack in the middle of nowhere and I'm also a fairly good fighter." She laughed, the sound tugging on his heartstrings, and leaned on him.

"You're a good man Sky. Myst adores you." He stopped abruptly and smiled in relief. (Finally, and we're not there yet.) "Sky? Why did you stop?" He whirled around, pulling away from her.

"We have to go." Candace just stood there, very confused. He turned back around and grabbed her arm, dragging her towards the hotel. "We have to go NOW!"

"Sky! Let me go!" she demanded several times. He complied only after having gotten far enough away. "What is going on here?!" She demanded angrily.

"I'll explain when we get back to the hotel, okay?" he pleaded desperately. "We need to go, they'll be here soon!"

"Who's `they?'" Candace said, getting frustrated.

"I'll explain later. Come ON!" She finally caught on to his urgency and they raced toward the hotel."
