Chapter 7 - Now How Many Foxes Were There?

Kurama smiled, studying our shocked and nervous expressions. "Thought so."

We all stared at him. "How long have you been there?" I asked, worried.

"Long enough, Myst." Kurama replied.

My eyes widened. <What should we do Candace!> We all turned to face her.

She put her hands up. "Don't look at me, I'm just the leader."

We all sighed. "I should have seen that coming." I thought, exasperated with our leader. I turned back to Kurama. "Did you tell anyone?" He shook his head no. "Please don't tell anyone," I begged him.

He looked surprised then slowly nodded. "Unless I have to, I won't."

We all relaxed and I turned to the gray foxes. "What are your names?"

"I'm Blaze, blue-eye's over there is Eron," Blaze responded.

Candace nodded. "Now if we're finished being interrupted, I'll do what I brought you out here to do. Egan come here." Egan looked worried but moved up to stand in front of her. "Egan, when you defended Myst and defeated one of Drakes' stronger men, you demonstrated a loyalty and strength that is needed and required in this group." She mover forward and placed an iridescent fox paw on his chest. "Welcome to the group, Egan." He smiled broadly as Oriana, Kiara, and I cheered. Oriana went up and kissed him on the cheek and Egan gave her a hug.

I smiled and walked over to him and gave him a hug. "You earned it Egan." I turned and walked away, but called over my shoulder, "Oh, by the way, thanks for saving my life." At this everyone started laughing. "I forgot, so sue me." I walked over to Candace. "What about those two?" I asked, motioning to Blaze and Eron. Oriana and Kiara jerked their heads up and toward Candace waiting for the answer.

"It depends," Candace replied.

"On what?" Kiara asked.

"Whether or not they want to join us."

We all looked toward them and Blaze shrugged. "Sure, why not." Eron nodded yes, silently agreeing with his brother.

Candace smiled. "I'll get you your uniforms." Candace walked off, followed by Blaze and Eron as they talked about the uniforms.

"We should get back, it's getting dark," Kurama said. We agreed and changed back into our fox forms. On the way back, we were rejoined by Candace, Blaze, and Eron, who all changed into their fox forms and walked along with us.

<Candace, what are you doing?> I asked her when she also changed.

<I'm allowed to have some fun aren't I?> she teased, her gold eyes sparkling with mischief.

I smiled and nodded. "This is going to be fun." We walked back to the apartment and when we got back the girls were waiting for us.

"Where's Candace?" Keiko asked, looking around.

"She said she had some business to take care of," Kurama made up out of nowhere, being a really good liar.

Keiko looked down at us and frowned. "4…5…6…7... I thought we only had four?"

"We did. The two gray ones we just found and the white one is Candace's friends'. Candace will be back sometime tomorrow to take her back."

Keiko nodded. "Do you know what their names are?"

"No, but I came up with some. Blaze for the one with red eyes, and Eron for the other one."

Keiko looked up from petting us and smiled. "I like them."

Kurama looked around at the quiet apartment. "Where are the others?"

"They went out somewhere. They'll be back in a bit."

Kurama nodded. "I'm going out for a walk; do you want to come with me?"

"Sure." Keiko stood up and grabbed her shoes. "Let's go."

After they had left, Candace looked at us, her eyes sparkling with mischief. <Let's have some fun, shall we?> We took off running throughout the house. I leapt up on the counter, accidentally knocking bowls full of food onto the ground. Jumping down in surprise, I ran into the living room where the others were running pell-mell around the room.

Stopping, Oriana looked around and shook her head. <The guys are going to kill us!>

<Why?> I asked, sitting down on the couch.

<Look at the floor.> I did and saw that the floor was covered in muddy paw prints. I t had rained the night before and hadn't dried off by the time we had gone for a walk.

I shrugged. <Oh well, we don't have to clean it up.> Oriana stared at me and I ignored her. <Come on guys.> I ran out of the room and into Yusuke's with the others following. We ran around his room, knocking everything that was on a shelf, table, or counter onto the floor. Grabbing the corner of his blankets in my mouth, I tugged on them until the fell onto the ground. Running over them, we cleaned our paws off then left. We basically did the same for the others but in Kurama's room we knocked about 10 potted plants over; in Kuwabara's room we left his cat alone; and we totally left Ian's alone, we didn't have a death wish. <Hey! There's food in the kitchen!> I said, racing out there and starting to gulp down food. Everyone joined me and we pigged out. Just then the door creaked open and everyone scattered. I tried to follow but slipped on some Macaroni & Cheese and fell to the ground. The door opened to reveal Kurama standing in the doorway with one hand on the door and the other hanging by his side. He looked at me and I looked back at him as dead silence prevailed in the apartment. A bowl that was full of applesauce that was tottering on the edge of the counter finally fell with a crash.

He sighed. "I thought you knew better Myst." I hunched low to the ground, putting my ears flat against my skull and my tail between my legs.

"What? What did she do?" Keiko appeared behind him and shook her head when she saw the utter disaster we had made of the apartment. "We should start cleaning. Maybe we'll get done before the others get back."

"Get what done?" Yusuke asked as he came up the hall.

"Then again, maybe not," Keiko sighed then went inside to start cleaning.

"Out. Everyone. Now." Kurama pointed out the doorway. One by one we slunk out passed the ticked boys.

When we heard Yusuke yell, "They are SO dead!" we took off, running through the forest.

Candace changed back and smiled. "That was fun!"

<Yeah, but you won't get punished, we will,> I commented sourly.

She froze and her smile slowly died. "Yeah. Sorry about that."

I shrugged. <We all agreed to do it. Besides, it was fun.> Everyone smiled and nodded in agreement.

"I'll go up and talk to the boys," Candace said

<And help clean up,> I said, grinning evilly.

She sighed and nodded. "And help clean up." We made our way back to the hotel. "Stay out here `till I come and get you, and that is NOT a suggestion." We sighed but nodded and sat down.

Candace walked back up to the room and walked in. "What happened?!" she asked, smiling to herself.

"The foxes tore up the place," Yusuke said, sounding ticked.

She pretended to be shocked but was quaking with laughter inside. "Let me help you clean up," She said as she moved over to one of the larger piles of food and started cleaning. About two hours later they were finally finished cleaning the apartment and she flopped onto the couch and closed her eyes. "By the way, my friend came for the fox."

They nodded in poorly disguised relief. "What was her name?" Keiko asked from a chain on the opposite side of the room.

"Who, the friend or the fox?" Candace asked, opening one eye and looking at her.

"Both I guess."

"The fox is Candy and the friend is Brandi," she replied, pulling two names out of thin air for people that didn't really exist. They nodded and started talking about the fights and stuff like that. <Hey guys, you can come up now,> Candace called. Soon there was a scratch on the door.

After sitting for about a half hour I got bored and started walking around. The other looked at me with some measure of annoyance in their eyes.

<What are you doing?> Egan asked after a bit.

<I'm bored. Wanna go for a walk?> Nodding, they and got up and followed me. We wandered around the hotel and found a small pond out back. We changed into our human forms and walked up to it. The girls and I fell a little ways behind the boys. "Okay girls, here's my plan," I whispered it to them and they readily agreed. The boys were at the pond now and looking into it, talking. We walked up and stood next to them, me next to Egan, Kiara next to Blaze, and Oriana next to Eron. All of the sudden, we shoved them into the pond and jumped back to avoid getting grabbed by the falling boys. We started laughing when they sat up in the pond, up to their chest in the water.

"Hey!" Egan yelled; a surprised look on his face.

"Oh calm down Egan, it can't be that cold," I said, still laughing. The boys looked at each other and smiled evilly. We started backing away from the pond, our laughter gone and wary expressions on our faces. The boys surged out of the water and ran towards us. We all screeched and ran as fast as we could, still laughing. They quickly caught us and slung us over their shoulders. "Egan! Put me down!" I gasped, punching his back.

He laughed. "All right." He put me down alright, right into the pond. I gasped at the chill of the water. Egan continued to laugh. "Oh calm down Myst, it can't be that cold," he taunted. My mouth hung open as I stared at him in surprise then I began to giggle. Pretty soon Kiara and Oriana joined me in the pond, courtesy of Blaze and Eron.

I looked over at them. "Come on girls; let's show them some old-fashioned girl-power." I began chasing them around, dunking them into the pond and getting dunked too. After about a half-hour of this we all flopped down on the bank of the pond, exhausted. After a bit, I turned to Oriana who was lying next to me. "Oriana, earlier Egan mentioned me looking like his mother. Why did that make him sad?" Oriana sighed, her eyes sad and distant, as if she was looking into the past. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to," I quickly said. "I mean, she's your mother too."

She looked directly at me. "No, actually she's not."

I started and looked over at Egan who was now sound asleep. "What!? I thought you were his sister?"

"Half sister. We have different mothers." She sighed again. "To properly explain this, I have to give you some of my past. My father got married to a really sweet lady named Rose. They had me but then she died in an accident at the factory she worked at. Dad got re-married to Egan's mom, but didn't know she was using him just to prove a point to her parents. About a year after Egan was born, she ran off to her old sweetheart, leaving Dad to raise Egan and me. When Egan got old enough, my father explained what happened and gave him a picture of his mother. He's hated her ever since, at least outwardly. I think he still loves her in his heart." When she finished the story she got up and walked off around the pond. I watched her go, finally understanding what had really happened that day.

I sighed then turned to Egan. He was still lying on his back, but single tear traced its way down his cheek. I moved over next to him and brushed the tear off. "Shh, it'll be alright Egan, I'm here."

His blue eyes opened and looked up into mine. They were vulnerable and filed with pain. "Why did she leave Myst? Why did my mommy go?"

I pulled him onto my lap. `I don't know Egan, I don't know." I rocked him and started to sing;

I know it hurts

When you've been left behind

Loved ones have walked on

And left you there to find

You are all alone

No one seems to care

You cry aloud in misery

But only to the air

Tears cloud your clear vision

Of happiness and joy

For your heart's been broken

Tossed aside a useless toy

Your betrayer turned their back

And effortlessly walked away

Never looking over their shoulder

To see the price you'd pay

Inside your heart was breaking

Sorrow reigned supreme

Comfort was all you wanted

But `reject' you were deemed

Left alone and hurting

Your tears fell like rain

And formed a sea around you

Drowning you in pain

The sky went dark around you

And hope took to its flight

Leaving you abandoned

As misery won the fight

But I will be your savior

And chase away the storm

Wipe away those tortuous tears

And make your heart warm

Cradle you in comfort

Help you stand up tall

As we face this world together

We'll be beaten but not fall

We're the perfect team

No one can knock us down

Let then bring it on

But we'll no more then frown

I will never leave you

I'll be your faithful friend

And if memories come back

I'll put them to an end

I won't let you cry

I'll cheer you heart and soul

And if they rip you apart

I'll hold you till you're whole

You're tears won't go unnoticed

As they have before

I'll take away your pain

You won't feel it anymore

With me by your side

You have nothing to fear

I will never leave you

But wipe away your tear

No matter what others say

I promise that to you

As long as I am here

To chase away the blue

I'll be your sunshine

When all you see is rain

I'll remove the clouds

To bring happiness again

I finished singing and looked down to see Egan asleep in my lap. I smiled softly and brushed his bangs out of his eyes. I caught a movement out of the corner of my eye and looked over to see Oriana with a smile on her face.

"What was that song?" She asked me as she sat down.

"It's my mom's song, `Sunshine Through the Rain.' She made it for my Dad when my grandfather disowned him. She sang it a lot because my dad liked it."

Blaze looked over. "Do you know where your parents are?"

I hesitated, thinking about it. "Nope. They were getting ready to move when I joined two years ago and I don't know where they moved to."

"Why did you join?" Eron asked.

I laughed softly, not wanting to wake Egan. "What is this interrogate Myst day? I always wanted to get out and explore, so my parents thought this would be good for me."

"Cool."

<Hey guys, you can come up now.> we heard Candace call.

I looked at Kiara, horrified. "But we're soaking wet!"

"We can do anything about that," Kiara responded.

I sighed and shook Egan. "Egan, wake up!"

He opened his eyes. "Huh?"

"We have to go; we're going to get in trouble!"

Egan quickly got up and we ran to the hotel, changing into our fox forms along the way. When we got to the room, we scratched on the door to be let in.
