Chap 6- Attack of the squirrels.

The next morning after breakfast Egan approached me. <How's your leg?>

<Better, but it still hurts a little, but I can walk on it, why?>

He looked a little awkward. <I just want to talk to you.> He turned toward the door. <Come on.> We went outside and walked silently in the woods for a ways.

<Can I see your human form?> I asked to break the silence.

He shrugged. <sure.> He changed into his human form to oblige me. He had dark blue eyes and short black hair with blue and red highlights. The uniform he had on was a cadet blue with a gold fox paw, signifying a lower rank then the rest of us. He looked down at me and his bangs fell into his face. He got an annoyed look on his face and pushed them back.

"He's even cuter in this form." I thought to myself, looking up at him.

"Now show me yours." He said, smiling.

<Did Oriana tell you about these collars?> I asked him. He nodded and knelt down, pushing the button. I changed into my human form and stretched, putting my arm above my head and linking my hands. He blinked rapidly, then opened his mouth, shut it, opened it again, and shut it again. I giggled at him. "Well, are you going to say something or are you exercising your jaw?"

He looked surprised and then smiled. "Sorry, you looked like someone I used to know." He started to walk away.

I caught up with him. "Who?"

He shook his head. "Never mind, it's nothing."

"It's not nothing or else you wouldn't have said it." I said, half-teasing.

He clenched his jaw and looked off into the distance. "My mother," he replied in a tone I couldn't quite distinguish, not angry, not happy…..emotionless. I started and looked into his eyes which were clouded in pain. He clenched his hands, the pain turning into anger and then evaporating.

We walked in silence for a while. "So…what did you want to talk to my about?" I asked to get his mind off what was troubling him.

"Oh yeah." He turned and faced me. "What's with you and that short guy?" He looked kind of nervous about the answer.

I looked at his, confused. "Do mean me and Hiei last night? You saw that?" He nodded yes to both questions and I laughed a little. "He reminds me of my father, so I like pretending that he is and my dad used to do that." His expression eased and managed a small smile. "Why? Do you like me or something?" I teased him. He blinked, surprised at the sudden question as a faint blush spread across his cheeks.

I poked him in the side and he jumped to the side a little. "Hey, don't do that!"

"Why? Does it tickle?" I poked him some more in the side. He started laughing as he tried to stop my tickle attack but he was laughing to hard. I pinned him to the ground by sitting on his chest. "I win!" I laughed as I sat there. I looked into his sparkling eyes and froze. "He has beautiful eyes."

"I never knew we were fighting," he teased a little, looking up at me. I opened my mouth to tease him some more, but I was flung to the side by something hitting my side. Landing hard on the ground, I rolled and slammed into a nearby tree. I dimly saw someone standing there, holding a sword in his hand and a cruel smile on him face. Leaping up off the ground, Egan placed himself between and my assailant. Black spots danced in my vision and the colors and shapes slowly lost their clarity as I descended into a world of black.

**************

Eyes widening in surprise, Egan watched me get hit and go flying. One glance was all he needed to see that I was hurt. Leaping off the ground, he placed himself between me and the stranger. "Who are you?!" He demanded.

The stranger did a half-bow, careful to keep the bloody sword away from his clothes. "I am Gunnar, Drake's 2nd in command."

"Why does Drake hate us anyway?" Egan asked angrily.

"Oh he doesn't hate you. It's her and her family that he hates. You're just in the way." Gunnar said.

"Why?!" Egan demanded.

"Why don't you ask her, if you live that is." Egan's eyes narrowed and flashed with anger and his fists clenched as he faced one of the life-long adversaries of our group. Gunnar got a mildly surprised look on his face as he looked at Egan. Egan noticed his hands were getting warm so he looked down to see that they were engulfed in flame. He looked up and launched himself at Gunnar while he was still off guard. He first punched him in the stomach, making him drop his sword and knocking all the wind out of him. Then he punched him in the face, making him stagger back a few steps. He covered where he had been hit with his hand. "You're not supposed to be this strong!" Egan grabbed the sword and stalked toward him, mayhem apparent in his eyes. Gunnar took a few steps backwards and then turned and fled through the forest. Putting the sword in his belt, Egan ran back to where I was laying. Gently picking me up, he ran back to the hotel.

He burst into the room and yelled, "Candace!!"

She ran into the room and stared at me and Myst. "What happened?" She demanded.

"Where are the others?" he asked, ignoring her question.

"Somewhere else, now what happened?!" Egan quickly outlined what had happened while Candace looked over Myst. "Where is Kiara when you need her?" She muttered.

"Maybe I can help," came a quiet voice from the doorway. They turned in surprise to see a short, blue haired girl standing there. Walking over to me, she laid her hand gently on my stomach. An odd blue glow came from her hand and the worst of the wounds slowly closed under the healing light. After she finished, she skillfully wrapped the rest of my wounds and walked quietly out the door. Watching her go, Egan cocked his head in bewilderment then turned back to me.

"We can't keep her here if she's in this form. We have to get her back into her fox form somehow," Candace said.

Glancing over at me, Egan saw that my eyes were open slightly. "Myst," he said quietly, walking over to me. "You need to change into your animal form. Can you do that for us?" Closing my eyes, I tried to concentrate but the dull throbbing in my side prevented me. "Keep trying Myst," Egan urged gently. Trying once again I succeeded and then relaxed as much as I could.

Barely awake, I was aware of someone picking me up and laying me down on something soft. Forcing my eyes open to slits, I saw that Egan was lying next to me, trying to stay awake. I smiled a little then drifted off to the healing sleep I needed most.

About an hour the others got back from their outing and saw me lying on my pallet, bandaged, and Egan fast asleep next to me. "What happened?" Yusuke demanded.

Candace shook her head. "I don't know. Someone found her in the woods and dropped her off. A girl came in and healed her as much as she could."

"What did she look like?" Kurama asked.

"She was short with blue hair and red eyes."

"That's Yukina." Kurama said. "Hiei's sister." Nodding, Candace went into the living room followed by the boys. Kiara and Oriana joined a sleepy Egan and a sleeping me on the pallets. Egan looked at them, blinked then yawned.

<What really happened, Egan?> Oriana wanted to know.

Egan laid his head on his paws. <Later. I'm tired.> They looked at me as I stirred on my pallet.

I slowly woke up and opened my eyes to see all of my friends looking at me. <What happened, Egan? How did we get back here?>

He looked startled and then put on a fake smile. <You got hurt, so go back to sleep Myst. We'll talk later.> I blinked my eyes sleepily and had no choice but to comply as I was completely exhausted

Egan looked over at Candace, worried. <Will she be alright?>

<I don't know.> She sounded concerned but didn't turn around form where she was talking with the boys. His attention was jerked back to me as I shivered with fever. Egan moved over and lay on one side of me, Kiara going the same on the other side. Egan explained what had happened to the others and when he was finished, he fell asleep. He woke up early the next morning to see that I was awake and looking at him.

<Good! You're awake!> Egan said in relief

I frowned in tired confusion. "Why is he do glad that I woke up?" <What happened, Egan?>

He frowned in concern. <You don't remember?> I shook my head. <Someone attacked us in the woods. You got hurt pretty badly,> he answered, watching my face to see if that aroused any memories. I frowned in concentration, trying to remember. My face lit as up when I did.

<Oh, the guy with the sword!> He nodded, relieved that it hadn't been anything serious. I looked over at him, amazed. <You protected me.> Oriana and Kiara jerked their heads up. They hadn't heard that part of the story. Egan blinked and stared at me before quickly getting up and leaving the room, embarrassed. The girls and I giggled at him as I explained what little I had seen. After I was finished I got up and moved over to the food bowls and began eating as the boys walked in.

"Good morning, sleepyhead." Kurama teased. I wagged my tail but never stopped eating. They all laughed at me and went into the kitchen where Keiko was making breakfast. Hiei looked at me, relief barely edging around the emotionless mask he always wore. Yusuke called everyone into the kitchen for dinner and the mask slipped totally back into place. I followed Hiei into the kitchen and watched everyone get settled into a chair. I walked up and laid down next to Hiei's chair. He didn't seem to notice me but a little while later, a piece of food fell down right in front of my nose. I looked up at him, but he was eating, his face devoid of any emotion. I smiled and ate the food.

<Hey Myst, that Gunnar mentioned something about Drake only hating you and your family. Why?> Egan asked.

<Oh, that.> I made a face. <This will be hard to believe, but he's my uncle. The reason he hates us is because he liked my mom and got really jealous when dad married her.>

<That's a…weird reason.> Egan said slowly.

<Yeah it is, but that's what happened.>

After dinner, Candace stood up and stretched. "I'm going for a walk. You mind if I take the foxes with?"

Relief was evident in their faces and they all nodded. "Please do," Kurama said.

Candace nodded her thanks. "Come on guys." We all scrambled up and followed her out the door.

<What's up Candace?> I asked her, looking up at her and trying not to trip.

<I'll tell you later.> I shrugged and we went out to the forest and walked a ways into a small clearing. Candace stopped and turned around, opening her mouth to speak. She was cut off as a small, gray fox darted up onto Candace's head.

<Save us! Save us!> he yelled, his fire-red eyes wide and frightened. Candace stumbled, trying to keep her balance with a fox on her head.

<Save you from what?> Oriana asked. Candace was leaning dangerously backwards, flailing her arms to stay upright.

<The brown thing with the big tail! That!> he replied, motioning toward a tree.

We looked over at the tree and shook our heads. <Dude, that's a squirrel,> Kiara said, laughing at him.

<Oh,> he said sheepishly. Candace finally lost her battle with gravity and landed flat on her back.

<Are you okay?> I asked, moving over to check on her. She nodded and got back up, glaring at the fox who was now sprawled on the ground. Soft laughter was heard as another gray fox emerged from the forest, his ice-blue eyes sparkling with humor.

Candace sighed. <Welcome to the group. Now, everyone change into your human forms,> she ordered. We all complied, even the two gray foxes. They both had the same color eyes and gray hair.

"Nice outfit," Kiara complimented red-eyes.

He smiled and looked down at his black tank-top and pants. "Yeah, I really like these," he said pointing at the flames encircling the bottom of the shirt.

Kiara turned to the other one and raised an eyebrow. "I have never seen a boy who willing wears all light blue before." His face turned red and he looked down at the ground.

"Hey! His outfit is cool!" Oriana defended him. He looked up and smiled shyly at her.

Candace once again opened her mouth to talk, but was again cut off as Kurama emerged from the bushes.
