Chapter 5 - Mud Plus Playful Foxes Equals….

The object of my surprise was standing calmly in the middle of the lobby. She had light gold eyes flecked with silver which twinkled with humor but could also flash with deadly anger when provoked; as I knew from past experiences. Her long white hair was streaked with gold and silver and it blew ever so slightly in the breeze coming in from the open door. Her tail was long and it waved slowly as she chatted with one of the clerks. Her sharp ears flicked toward every noise, but it was more of a reflex then anything. She was wearing a loose one-piece outfit that was like mine but it was a bark blue swirled with a lighter blue and the fox paw had a gold star framing it.

<Candace!!> I called, now in a VERY good mood. She looked over,

"Oh, there's one!" Walking over, she knelt in front of me. "What are you doing here Myst?" She questioned me. I quickly explained what was going on and told her what to do and what not to do. <Fine way to treat your leader.> she teased, her eyes twinkling. I put my ears back a little.

<Sorry> I apologized.

<I was just teasing you.> she smiled. <I'll meet you in the room in a bit.> I nodded and ran back to the room.

<Candace is back!!> I yelled. Kiara and Oriana jerked their heads toward me and I explained what was going on. When I had finished they smiled, nodded, and we started prancing around the room. The boys looked at us, really confused, but shrugged. Soon there was a knock on the door. We looked at each other, smiled, and continued running around the room. Kurama answered the door.

"Yes?"

"I heard that you have three foxes and...." she was cut off as Oriana, Kiara, and I came flying toward the door and jumped on her. She knelt down and hugged us. "Don't you do that again!" she scolded us. Standing up, she explained to Kurama. "These foxes are very rare because of their coloration. They were stolen about a year ago for their pelts, but I guess that they were kept alive because the pelts of adults are worth a lot more." Kurama nodded

"Why don't you come in, Ms...?"

"It's Candace, just Candace." She said with a smile that lit up her golden eyes. She walked in, or maybe you could you call it stumbling in because we were clustered closely around her feet. She sat on the couch and we jockeyed for position. I ended up on her lap, with Kiara and Oriana on either side.

"Do you have anywhere to stay?" Keiko asked after Candace re-told our half-true story. Candace shook her head no and they showed her the same room I had recovered in. All of the sudden she stopped and her hand flew to her mouth.

"Oh no, I left Egan downstairs!"

"Who's Egan?" Yusuke asked

"Another fox I found." she said

<Since when do we have a guy in our group?> I asked

<Follow me and I'll explain.> she said, not looking at us and walking out of the room. Curiosity overcoming caution, we followed. As we walked down the hall she explained. <I found him about a month ago. He has the potential of becoming a very powerful fighter; but he's younger then you, Myst, making him the youngest of the group. You WILL be nice to him, Kiara.> she warned. Kiara just rolled her eyes. When we got to the lobby, the cutest, most hyper little fox you've ever seen came bounding toward us. His soft blue eyes that sparkled like sapphires shone out from his black fur which was highlighted with a dark blue that only showed if you saw it in the right light. Above his eyes there was a mark that looked like a flame and was dark red, barely visible against his fur. I watched him prance across the floor toward us. His blue eyes sparkled with energy and health, and to me he was the vision of perfection. Of course, I didn't let anyone know about this.

<Hi.> he said as he got to us.

<Hey, midget.> Kiara responded.

Egan turned toward Oriana, <Hi sis.>

I started. "Sis? They're brother and sister?"

<Hi,> Oriana replied, smiling. <Long time no see.>

<Sorry to interrupt the reunion, but we need to go.> Candace yawned, <I'm tired.> we all rolled our eyes and took off for the room, leaving Candace behind. <What? Hey, wait!> she yelled, running after us. When we got to the room, Egan was the last one in. As he ran across onto the rug, he tripped. Don't ask me how, but he did. He ended up on his back, looking up at the boys, who started to laugh at him. He wagged his tail and barked, still flat on his back. Candace walked in, saw him, rolled her eyes, and went to bed. We, on the other hand, were too wound up to do the same so we ran around driving everyone insane until Hiei flipped and chased us into Candace's room, where we jumped onto her bed and woke her up. She glared at us, chased us out of the room, and slammed the door. Hiei glared at us and we slunk off to bed, and a while later we fell asleep.

The next day Oriana, Egan, Kiara, and I snuck outside. It had rained the night before so it was muddy outside. Running around, we wrestled in the mud and got totally covered in it. When we finally went back inside, the clerks yelled at us and chased us upstairs. We ran inside the room and hid under the table. When Kurama entered the kitchen, he spotted the paw prints and stopped dead.

Getting an almost too calm look on his face, he called over his shoulder. "Candace? Please come here."

Candace came in, saw what had happened and shook her head. "Looks like you four need a bath." Our eyes widened.

I smirked. <You have to catch us first.> We took off, running around the room, being chased by the boys and Candace. Yusuke caught Egan by his tail, Kurama got Kiara by the scruff of her neck, Kuwabara caught Oriana by grabbing her around the middle, and Candace caught me by cornering and grabbing me. They hauled us into the bathroom where Keiko was getting bath water ready. When she was finished they dumped us in the water. We immediately tried to get out, but the boys held us in. When they were almost finished, Egan and I managed to get out. We ran into one of the room before they could see where we went. Unfortunately for us, it was Hiei's. He got this strange look on his face and started walking toward us. We backed up, then turned around and ran, hiding in Yusuke's bed.

Kurama saw us and followed, shaking his head. "Yusuke is going to kill you." He grabbed us and put us back in the tub. We sat there and let Keiko finish washing us and dry us off. As we were being dried off I looked over at Egan. His ears were laid back and he looked like he was being tortured. He saw me looking at him and he looked over. I smiled shyly at him and he smiled back, the smile lighting up his beautiful blue eyes.

Oriana looked at us. <Myst, I need to talk to you.> I looked at her in surprise and nodded. We walked out of the bathroom, easily avoided the boys attempts at grabbing us, and we went and sat in the living room. <Do you like Egan?> Oriana asked bluntly.

I started in surprise, <Well….I….uh…> I dropped my head. <Yeah> I said in a small voice.

She smiled and sat next to me. <He is really cute though isn't he?>

<Yeah, he is.> I smiled. Egan came trotting is. <Well, speak of the devil.> He stopped and looked at us, confused. We laughed at the look on his face. Getting up we started walking back toward the bathroom. When I was level with him, I flicked my tail into his face, making him jump backwards in surprise. I laughed at him and he jumped on me, starting a playful tussle. I underestimated him and he soon got his mouth around my throat. <Alright, alright, I give, you win!>I said, laughing.

He let go and strutted around the room. <I am the champion!> he crowed victoriously. I watched him prance around the room, his eyes sparkling from his victory.

Candace shook her head from the doorway. <Come on lovebirds, dinner is served.>

Egan and me stared at each other <DINNER!!> We both shouted at the same time, pelting toward the kitchen.

On the way there I looked over to Egan and said <I'll get you later, mister.>

He looked at me and laughed. <Yeah right.>We ran into the kitchen and nearly knocked Kurama over. Everyone started laughing as we ran around, looking for food. Barely managing to not laugh, Candace pointed to where Kiara and Oriana were eating in the living room. We ran over, stuck our heads in the bowls, and started gulping food. By now, everyone was laughing so hard that they could barely stay in their seats. When they finally calmed down, they ate. When I was finished eating, an evil idea popped into my head. While Egan was still eating, I pounced onto him, knocking him over and pinning him onto the floor. He lay there, stunned, but he quickly recovered and knocked me off and leapt at me.

Smiling, Kiara looked over at Oriana. <Shall we join them?> she asked playfully before taking a running leap at Egan, knocking him off of me. She stood between Egan and I and play-bowed to Egan, inviting him to wrestle. Shaking her head, Oriana leapt at Kiara and shoved her to the side, allowing Egan to pounce at me again. If you were watching the fight, chances are you wouldn't be able to tell who was fighting who; I know I couldn't, but somewhere in the middle of the fight, the boys and Candace left. When I stopped moving for a second to try and find Egan, Oriana stumbled into my side, having been pushed by Kiara. The impact knocked me into a chair leg and I yelped involuntarily. Immediately all fighting stopped and everyone crowded around me.

<Are you okay?>Egan asked, his eyes filled with concern.

I managed a tight smile. <Just a little bruise. I'll be fine.>I tried to get up and promptly fell back down where I had come from. <Okay, maybe not that little.>Egan sighed in exasperation and shook his head, helping me back up. I slowly made my way over to my bed with the help of Egan and Oriana. I lay down and Egan laid next to me as the others came into the room.

<Are you okay Myst?>Candace asked, seeing me lying down.

I nodded. <Just hurt my leg a little. I'll be fine.>

She nodded, "I guess they wore themselves out." The others nodded and went back to............whatever they were doing back there.

<Are you sure you're okay?>Egan pried.

I rolled my eyes and nodded. 'Boys. Always overprotective.' Later that night while everyone else was asleep I was still wide awake, unable to sleep. I got up, careful not to wake anyone up and limped down the hallway into Hiei's room. He was still awake and looked at me with an unfathomable look on his face as he got up and headed toward me. I kinda hunched down and put my ears back. He knelt down in front of me, looked around to see if anyone else was there, and picked me up. He cradled me in his arms, careful to avoid my leg, and walked back over the windowsill and sat down, putting me into his lap. I curled up into his lap and looked up at his face. A small smile graced his features as he dropped off to sleep, with me soon joining him.
