Chapter 4 -Suspicions and Apologies
Last time: <Oriana. Is that you?>
--------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------
The fox quickly looked up in surprise. <Yes. Is that you Myst?> she replied. I nodded and barked, excited at having found another of our group.
<Do you want us to get you loose?> Kiara asked. She looked at us in surprise.
<Would you?> She asked gratefully. Nodding, I leapt up and bit the hand that was holding the chain. Yelping, the man dropped the chain. Oriana, Kiara, and I ran and hid behind the boys. Noticing us, the man reached for a whistle on his belt.
<Stop him!> I yelled and jumped forward, but was stopped by Kurama grabbing my tail. I struggled to get free while the demon blew the whistle. "Idiot." I finally got free and stepped back to watch what I knew what would happen. 5 or 6 other demons ran out from the forest and surrounded us.
"Give us the foxes!" they demanded
"What is so important about these foxes?" Yusuke asked angrily. The demons looked surprised.
"You don't know?" Yusuke shook his head. The demon opened his mouth to explain, but was cut off as I growled and jumped on him. This started an all out free-for-all and it ended with one of the demons surviving, and he had teeth and claw marks all over him. He took off into the forest, closely followed by Oriana and me.
<That was fun!> I crowed, prancing back to the boys.
<Yeah, let's do it again!> Kiara pranced along side of me, her eyes sparkling with humor. Oriana just shook her head and followed.
"Myst!! Look at what you did!!" Yusuke yelled at me. My ears went back and I tucked my tail between my legs, hugging the ground.
<Are you really afraid of them?> Oriana asked. I shook my head.
<No, they just like to think that they're the bosses.> I smirked to myself.
"Nothing we can do about it now, I guess we have another fox." Kurama sighed.
"Come on guys, we need to keep going." Yusuke said impatiently. They shrugged and continued walking.
<These guys ARE idiots. They didn't take your chain off.> I said to Oriana. She giggled as I went up and nipped the nearest ankle, and it just happened to be Hiei's.
"What do you want?" He growled, scowling. I ran over the Oriana and picked up her chain in my mouth. He rolled his eyes, came over, and broke the chain off the collar. I wagged my tail in thanks and ran to the front of the group. We searched for three more days and didn't find Drake or even his scent, so we went back to the hotel. When we got there Keiko looked at us and giggled.
"What's so funny Keiko?" Yusuke asked, confused.
"Almost every time you go out you come back with another fox. If you keep doing this, we'll have about 50 of them." Keiko giggled again. Yusuke smiled and went to get yet another pallet.
<You still haven't told me who's who, Myst.> Kiara asked as we lay down.
<Oops, sorry.> I replied sheepishly. <Okay, the red-head is Kurama, the constantly grumpy, small, black haired one is Hiei, and other black haired one is Yusuke, and the obnoxious, orange haired one is Kuwabara.>
<Who's the girl?> Oriana asked
<Oh, she's Keiko, Yusuke's girlfriend, even though they won't admit it.> I giggled. Oriana nodded and then fell asleep. <She must have been really tired.> I said turning to Kiara, also finding her fast asleep. I blinked in surprise at how quickly they fell asleep. The boys and Keiko walked into the living room and sat down on the couch. I got up, walked over, and jumped up onto Kurama's lap. When I got up, I woke the other two, and they followed me. Kiara jumped up into Yusuke's lap and Oriana jumped into Keiko's. They looked surprised but then smiled as we got settled. Oriana and Kiara went back to sleep, but I wasn't tired enough, so I just lay there, listing to Yusuke tell Keiko what had happened while Kurama petted me. This, I might add, felt really good.
"….after the guy blew the whistle, around 6 other guys showed up. They started to tell us what was so important about these guys," he waved his hand at us, "but Myst attacked him and all three of the foxes ganged up on the poor guy. His friends attacked us and I, of course, took care for most of them." He was cut off by Kuwabara,
"Liar, it was me! I'm the best!" This started a verbal war between the two boys while the others laughed at them. I looked up at them, then shook my head and laid it back down.
"Boys, always trying to be the best." In reality it was Hiei and Kurama who did most of the work while the other two just played around. Kurama confirmed what I thought.
"Now, now children, it was Hiei and I who took care of most of them." Yusuke and Kuwabara glared at him and Hiei crossed his arms and smirked. I lifted me head, bared my teeth and growled at them. They looked surprised and stopped fighting. I put my head back down.
"That's better" I thought smugly. Keiko bent down and looked at Oriana's tag.
"Oriana." She said. The others looked at her, confused. "That's her name." she clarified.
"Oh, cool." Yusuke said. He glanced at his watch. "It's almost midnight. If we're going to make the fight tomorrow we have to go to bed soon."
"Fight?" Kuwabara asked, confused
"The tournament starts tomorrow and we're in the first fight." Yusuke shook his head, "You forgot already?" Kuwabara put on a sheepish face and rubbed the back of his head. Everyone rolled their eyes and laughed. Kiara, Oriana, and I got up and went to our beds, allowing the boys to do the same.
In the morning, the boys got up early and noisily got ready for the fight, waking us up in the process, especially Yusuke and Kuwabara, who boasted that they were going to win all of their fights; much to the amusement of Kurama and Hiei. When they left we followed them into the arena. When we got there we started getting strange looks. The boys saw the looks and looked behind them and saw us. Apparently they hadn't noticed us following them. "You were supposed to stay in the hotel." Kurama scolded us, annoyed. We coked our heads and wagged our tails, feigning innocence. They just shook their heads and turned back to the platform where the first enemy was waiting. Kurama was up against the human-like demon. Every time Kurama got hurt I growled. <Why do they do this? It's pointless.>
<I don't know, but it is pointless.> Oriana agreed. Kurama got hit really hard and went flying across the arena I flipped and started forward, growling, with my teeth bared. Kiara jumped in front of me
<Stop!!> She yelled.
<Get out of my way, Kiara.> I told my laying my ears back in anger. She refused to move. <Fine> I launched myself at her and we started fighting. It's was not quiet by any stretch of the imagination. Everyone looked at us in surprise and Yusuke and Kuwabara came over to try and stop us, but when they pulled us apart we were scratched up pretty badly and so were Yusuke's and Kuwabara's hand and arms. I struggled to get loose, but couldn't.
"Myst, calm down!" Kurama called from the arena. I stopped and looked to where he was standing, perfectly fine. I put my ears back, my tail between my legs, and hunched over in an "oops" kind of thing.
<Sorry, Kiara> I apologized. She shrugged.
<That's okay. It was kind of fun though.> her eyes sparkled with humor.
<Yeah it was.> I smiled back sheepishly, perking my ears up.
"You guys are waiting outside." Yusuke said as he took us outside and put us down. Oriana joined us.
<Come on, let's go and get out of our fox forms.> I suggested, running toward the woods with the others following, and then we changed into our human forms. Oriana smiled at us and put her long, gold hair up in a ponytail. I studied the cuts and scratches on my arms and chest. "I really am sorry. I just...I don't know....sorry." I dropped my head, not keeping eye contact. She draped her arm around my shoulder.
"No prob. We all get carried away from time to time. Hey, do you want to go see how they're doing in the fight." Kiara suggested.
"You can't. Your scratches would be a dead give-a-way to who you are." Oriana pointed out.
"Yeah, but we would be in the audience so they wouldn't see us." I said. Oriana blinked
"I hadn't thought of that." So we went into the stadium and watched them. Everyone won their fight, except for Kuwabara, who lost his in about 2 minutes. Afterwards we followed them back to the hotel. On the way back the path took the boys through a patch of woods. I smirked as an idea crossed my mind. I whispered it to Kiara, and her eyes glinted with a mischievous light, and she turned and told Oriana. She looked uncertain but then nodded. We snuck ahead of them to the forest and waited for them. When they came into the woods next to us I counted down from three
<Three, two, one, go!> We leapt out of the forest. I jumped onto Kurama's back, Oriana onto Kuwabara's and Kiara onto Yusuke's, knocking them face first into the forest floor. They lay there for a bit, stunned, but then they bucked us off, sending us flying. We landed on our backs on the forest floor. We all started laughing as they quickly turned around to see what had happened. We sat up and barely managed to stay up. "Sorry.....I couldn't......help myself." I said, gasping between the words. They just stared at us, surprised to see us there.
"Why are you here?" Yusuke said, completely baffled as usual. We got up and brushed the leaves off our clothes.
"Just wanted to see how you were doing." I answered, still laughing a little.
"Just a question; how old ARE you guys?" Kurama asked.
"Well, she and I are 10," I said, motioning to Kiara, "and she's 12." I finished, pointing to Oriana.
"Thought so." Kurama smiled
"Can you tell us NOW who you are?" Yusuke said hopefully. Kiara snickered.
"No. It's still a secret." The boys looked disappointed and Kiara just smiled evilly. Kurama looked at us strangely
`Every time they're around the fox's aren't. I wonder...." His thoughts were cut off as Yusuke suggested
"Why don't you guys stay for dinner or something?"
"Yay!! Food!!" I shouted, bouncing up and down. Kiara glared at me.
"Sorry, but we need to go. We have a job that needs finishing." I opened my mouth to object but she shut me up with another glare. Turning around, I stalked into the woods. Behind me, Oriana apologized to the boys then ran after Kiara and I. When we got home later that evening, I was still in a bad mood, refusing to go near anyone, staying in the corner and growling when anyone came too near. Finally giving up about a half hour later, I went down to the lobby, looking for some peace and quiet. When I entered the lobby, I froze in surprise.
"No, it couldn't be…could it?"
