Chapter 5: A Lullaby

“Explain once more how you figured it out.” Spout pleaded. Neka shrugged.
“First off, the previous owner was your elder brother. I knew this because when a father dies and passes on an heirloom, it automatically goes to the oldest son. So, now that we know who it used ta belong to, we need to know his characteristics.
“Your brother was a drunk. That's why he died, from being so drunk. How did I figure that out, hm? Simple. If you notice the scratches near the key hole of the case, you'll realize that they're many of them. Now, how hard is it to put a key into a hole as clear-as-day as that one? It's not; well, unless your sight is dizzy and you can't honestly concentrate from the amount of alcohol that rests in your system.
“That was an artless riddle. Though many brain-dead idiots aren't very observant, the grazes on that case are very noticeable.” Neka finished with a proud, smug look.
“I think you read our minds!” Tank-Man accused. Neka sighed and glanced up at the black bandana around her forehead.
The thing that added to her oddness, the thing that allowed her to sufficiently use telepathic powers, the thing that was totally natural, the accursed thing that annoyed the living heck out of her:
The Jagan Eye.
The eye only annoyed her because it had a frikin mind of its frikin own. Example: when she beat up Tank-Man, her Jagan eye transformed her into her demon form. Luckily, it was her will to go into her Jagan form.
“I can't your stupid read minds, you baka. Those damn talismans,” Neka said and motioned to the pieces of paper on the wall, “keep me from using telepathic powers.” The brothers growled and then left the room. They slammed the large door on their way out.
“Is this how I'm supposed to live? Trapped, powerless in the Ningenkai? Is this how I'm going to die? Without telling him the truth?” Neka whispered and then gazed up at the concrete ceiling. “Did Koenma even send someone to come find me again?”

Koenma sighed as he picked up the communicator to talk to Yusuke.
“Yo, binky-breath! What's up?” came Yusuke's reply.
“Yusuke, how far are you till you get to Hiromi?” Koenma asked.
“Kurama, how much longer?” Yusuke asked his kitsune friend.
“I'd say around five more hours if we hurry.” Kurama's earnest voice was heard.
“Hm, well, Yusuke! Put Kurama on please.” Koenma said.
“Yes, Koenma, sire?” Kurama answered.
“Yes, well, umm, I don't know how to say this, but, I gave you the wrong directions.” Koenma admitted.
“Nani?!” Kurama exclaimed.
“Yes, there's a “Hiromi” in the Reikai and Ningenkai, as well as the Makai. I don't think that the city in the Makai is the one my cous- er, I mean, Neka is being held captive in.”
Phew! That was close! Me and Neka being related needs to be kept secret. Koenma thought.
“Hm, then where do you think the Hiromi we're looking for is?” Kurama asked, assumingly not catching Koenma's near mistake.
“I'm thinking the Ningenkai. The Reikai Hiromi is very small and has no villages around it for about 9,000 miles.” Koenma informed the red-head.
“Yes, so do you think you can give us a portal, please?” Kurama asked politely.
“Yeah, sure. Where in the Ningenkai?”
“No, not the Ningenkai. Give us a portal to,” Kurama clarified, “the Reikai.”
“Why come here?”
“I'll tell you once we get there.”
“See you in five minutes.”

Kurama closed the communicator and handed it back to Yusuke.
“So, what did the toddler want?” Hiei asked. He was in quite a hurry to get to Neka. She was in trouble and he had to get there.
Kurama sighed.
“The Hiromi we're going to isn't in the Makai; it's in the Ningenkai.” he said. “Koenma's summoning a portal to the Reikai.”
“Why back to there?” Kuwabara asked.
“I need to talk to Koenma. And also it would be quicker if we could get the map from him.” Kurama answered.
“So, you mean to tell me, that we've been going in the wrong direction?!” Hiei barked angrily. Kurama sighed again and nodded. “I'll kill that toddler; I swear I'll kill him.” Hiei muttered.
We were so close and now I have to wait longer to get to her?! he thought on the side. Then something broke through his thinking.
“AWWWW!! Does Hiei miss his wittle girl-fwiend?” Yusuke teased. And then to make it worse, Kuwabara jumped in.
Of course, Hiei completely ignored the baka ningens.

Neka was singing a sweet lullaby that her mother taught her before she past away. Her angelic voice rang through the empty brick halls of the castle, filling the atmosphere with easiness and caring.
Then she stopped.
A tear made its way down her cheek.
Then in slow-motion, it crystallized and hit the floor with an echoing clank.
Neka stared at the gem. The swirled colors-black, blue, red, and sienna-were what made Kakomi crystals so intriguing. They reflected on the source's self and the most cherished person in their lives.
“I wonder what Hiei's doing right now?” she asked herself, picking up her tear and examining it.

“She stopped…” Hiei murmured suddenly.
“Who stopped what, Hiei?” Kurama inquired.
“Neka, she stopped, singing.”
“How do you know?”
“…”
“A feeling, perhaps?”
“…Yeah…”
“What was she singing?”
“Something in French, but I know the translation.”
“What is it?”
“Quite annoying lyrics, really.
“ “Whose shining face makes me smile? Whose sweet snoring makes me sing my heart out? Whose warm smile do I cherish? Whose gentle touch makes me melt? It's yours, my love, it's yours. It's yours, my love, it's yours”
“I think her mother taught her that.”
“Yes, but I wonder why she sings them?”
“She's probably bored.”
“I don't think so.”
“Huh?” Hiei asked. Why else would Neka be singing that lullaby?
“I think she misses a certain fire demon. But, then again, that's only my “meaningless ningen logic,” Hiei.” Kurama replied, quoting something Hiei said a long time ago. Hiei thought about that.
“…Why that song?” he asked.
“Say the lyrics in your head again.” Kurama instructed. Hiei did so and kept replaying them over, and over, and over.
“Oh…hn.” Hiei said and blushed, looking away. Kurama smiled.
