Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction ❯ Scared ❯ Keiko's Engagement Party ( Chapter 2 )
Scared
Chapter 1
I brushed my teeth after I got out of the shower. Two hours ago I had a dream about my childhood that I thought I wouldn't ever remember again. I stared in the mirror as I rinsed out my mouth and started to wash my face. Damn that frickin' dream! I'm as pale as a ghost now. Just great...I rolled my eyes as I dried my face. I walked out of my bathroom and went to the master bedroom, my bedroom.
About three years after I defeated Sensui I decided that it was time to live on my own. My mother agreed since I actually graduated high school. Amazing ain't it? I got a house near the Tokyo Bay. No one but my mother and Kuwabara knew where I live. Not even Koenma. I was content, well as content as I could be. My mother found out about Keiko dumping me. Yes, Keiko dumped me and it was because of me never being there. We were still friends though. I think that's why my mother agreed to let me move out. So I could cope with this on my own. Anyway, she hit the lottery and got me a house a few weeks after we decided. The only reason Kuwabara knows is because he followed me home one day, and because I needed someone to carry me home if I passed out on a mission.
I walked downstairs staring out side the sliding glass door that leds down to the sand of the bay. The day was dark with clouds, the sun barely got through. I went to the kitchen and started to make my coffee. Once I finished making my coffee I put it in silver to-go cup. I sipped it before putting down in the kitchen table. I yawned, its too damn early for work. Well, I have a human job I mean. Since Koenma doesn't pay me I had to do something. Plus Koenma hasn't given me jobs because Keiko explained to the team that I was 'not mental there' for the missions. Oh well, My mom wasn't going to pay for all of my bills so I had to do something. I stalked upstairs and went into the work room. I grabbed my shoulder holster and slipped it around my shoulders. Picking up a Browning High Power and a CZ-M75, I holstered them into the shoulder holsters. I slipped my green silk button up shirt of the white tanktop and the holsters. I grabbed my wallet and stuck it into the back pocket of my blue jeans. Walking downstairs I grabbed my coffee cup and keys and headed out, locking the door.
I walked out to a green and black Yamaha motorcycle. I sipped my coffee again as I lifted the seat to pull out the helmet. It was black with green flames on the bottom of it and green Kanji in the back above the flames. Mamorinuku...to protect till the end. I had a friend do that for me. Pretty neat huh? I closed the seat and sat on the motorcycle. After putting on the helmet I started the engine and revved it. Ah, the sound of the motorcycle is so refreshing in the morning. I kicked the stand up and steered the motorcycle one handed as I speeded off toward the center of Tokyo.
~~~~~
I ran a hand through my hair as I looked up at the precinct. If you couldn't tell what my job is. It isn't a cop. I'm a retainer for the cops about unusual incidents, but they treat me like a fellow cop and gave me a desk and shit. I shrugged my shoulders when I found out. As long as I got to do whatever the hell I pleased I was fine. I walked up the stairs and into the building. I waved at the guard at the front as I went farther into the station. Once you pass the double doors you were in a room with a bunch of desks around you. I went to mine which to my surprised has most of the officers surrounding it. I heard awing from the females and chuckling from the males. I sighed as I approached. "Alright, Alright...what's the big idea?" They parted as soon as they heard my voice. My jaw dropped as I looked at the person sitting in my seat. "KEIKO!?" I shouted. She smiled up at me. I looked down to see Puu in her arms.
"Hello Yusuke..." She smiled back slightly. I scratched my head. "I never thought you'd be a cop."
"You know me full of surprises." I said cutting off anyone who wanted to say differently. "What are you doing here?" I asked. She thrusted Puu at me. I took him blinking at her.
"I came to give him back. Took a while to find you, but Kuwabara kind of slipped when I was baggering him." She chuckled. "Also...I want you to come to my engagement party." I choked.
"En-engagement party?" She nodded smiling sadly at me.
"Please, come. Everyone is going to be there, Genkai, Shizuru, Yukina, Botan, Kuwabara, Kurama, even Hiei!" I saw her eyes pleading me to go, begging. I mentally scolded myself for soft when I nodded silently. She smiled and was about to hug me but stopped. She patted my arm before walking out. I sighed and plopped down into my chair and put Puu on the desk. He puued and flapped his ears.
"Wow Urameshi...he moved." A female officer said as she came and leaned on my desk. Her black hair framed her face and was shoulder length. She was petite about 5'5'' but she had strength. Her dark brown eyes shined with amusement as she looked at me. This was Lin Chong, she was a Chinese transfer cop. She is a martial arts expert and knows how to use her gun. She carried twin Desert Eagles which have her name inscribed on it. She is my partner and just as stubborn as me. "So what is it? An animal or a robot?"
"Both?" I said in a question. "I found it a long time ago and gave it to her as a present. Guess I forgot the return address." Lin laughed and picked Puu up. "Want to take care of him?"
"Sure!" She smiled and hugged the blue fuzz ball. "So you really going to the Engagment Party?"
"I said yes, and that means I have to go." I glared at the desk and tapped on it.
"You want an escort?" I looked up at her with a raised eyebrow. She had the invite in her hand. "It says plus one..." I wonder if she was implying she wanted to go see it or just go to be with me. I shrugged.
"Sure, when is it?" I didn't care in the least bit. Everyone will see me they will ask where I have been. I would lie stay for the food and leave, getting back to my now normal life.
"It is tomorrow night." Lin looked at me. Oh no, she has an evil smile on. "Will you come shopping with me? I know you have the tuxedo I gave you for the Chief's wedding from last year, but I need a new dress." Not shopping...Oh god. I'm in trouble.
"Do I have to pay for it?" I asked cautiously. Lin smirked. I groaned. "Fine! We can go today..."
"We can go now, Chief wants us out of the station because an Inspector is coming and they don't know about us." Lin said as she stood up with Puu in her arms. She pulled me out of my chair and outside. "I carpooled with Ami, so...I guess that means we are taking your motorcycle." She said sheepishly. I sighed and led her to my motorcycle. I opened the seat and pulled out the spare helmet along with my own. The spare was white with blue one it and a clear visor unlike mine which had a black visor. She put it on as I got onto the motorcyle. She climbed on as I revved the engine. One arm went around my waist and the other held Puu as I backed out of the parking space. I spun the motorcycle around and speeded off toward the mall.
~~~
Alright let's just say the mall trip sucked for me. Damn Lin. Anyway, I ran a hand through my hair as I locked my house and closed the door. Lin was driving her mustang to the party while I was taking my motorcyle. I carefully got on to make sure I didn't ruin the suit. I put the helmet on and headed to the party. Under my suit jacket I did have my two guns with me. The area where Keiko was having the party wasn't safe. I told Lin to bring her small Bretta in her garter holster. Hopefully she will. I really have a bad feeling about tonight. I revved my engine and headed to the party. I kept thinking about Keiko's engagement. I got her a bracelet as a small gift. It was small white gold bracelet with emerald and sapphires dangling from it every other link. I weaved through traffic until I got the place.
I parked my motorcycle next to Lin's mustang and saw her leaning on it. I took off my helmet and shook my head. Running a hand through my hair, I got off the motorcycle and took the keys out. I opened the see and put the helmet away and Keiko's gift out. Locking up the motorcycle, I turned to Lin and looked at her dress. It was a spaghetti strap red dress with a low back and two slits up both sides. "Spiffy..." I held a hand out to her. "Let's get this over with..."
"Don't be so rude, Yusuke." Lin smiled at me. "Enjoy the party...once we get inside of course." I smiled and led Lin inside. I blinked as I looked at the decor. White and peach...that is so Keiko. Lin leaned in to whisper to me. "Why do I feel like I'm being watched."
"Because we are..." I motioned to the people in front of us. Lin blushed as she saw everyone looking at her.
"Urameshi! You came!" Kuwabara said bouncing over to us. Lin let go of my arm and watched as Kuwabara punched my shoulder. Luckily I had practice to keep my guns hidden. "So Keiko found you!"
"So someone told..." I playfully glared at Kuwabara. "So what's going on?" Kuwabara shook his head then tilted back toward the rest of the gang. I smirked at them. Kurama seemed surprised to see me and Hiei just stared. "Er...hi?" Genkai shook her head smiling slightly. Shizuru grinned and waved as did Botan. Yukina smiled and nodded her head.
"Yusuke...it is good to see you. Is this your new girlfriend?" Shizuru asked teasingly. I grinned and glanced at Lin as she blushed.
"Well Lin, it seems they found us out." I laughed as she turned red from anger and started to swat at me.
"YUSUKE! YOU JERK!" Lin screamed as she bashed me on my right arm. Everyone chuckled as I back pedaled from her.
"Alright, alright....this is Lin Chong, she's a...business partner," I said trying to find the right words. Lin shoot me a confused look and I gave her one back that said go with it. She sighed then smiled.
"I am posing as Yusuke's escort for this evenings events." Lin said. I thanked her mentally. Kurama smiled and greeted her while introducing her to everyone. I smiled as I watched Kurama led her around. I looked down at Genkai, who looked up at me.
"Follow me, dimwit..." I blinked and followed Genkai waving to people who I knew from Keiko. Once away from the crowd Genkai turned to me. "What's with carrying a gun into a party like this Yusuke?" I blinked in surprised. She spotted my guns. Must have been from when Kuwabara hit me. I shrugged.
"Didn't Keiko tell anyone? I'm with the cops now." I said nonchalantly. Genkai stared at me before smiling slightly.
"Good see you doing something with your life. So where did you disappear to after Sensui?" She asked. I smirked and winked at her.
"Well grandma, that's my secret." I spoke just before Lin found us. She clinged to my arm.
"Come on! It's starting!" She said as she tugged me toward the tables. Genkai followed us shaking her head. Lin seemed to be pulling me toward the back of the tables. I glanced at the main table where Keiko and her fiancee and their families were sitting. I stopped dead in my tracks, frozen in shock and fear. A vision of my father grinning at me, overlapped Keiko's fiancee. No...he's dead. He died in a car accident.
"--suke...Yusuke...Yusuke what's wrong." Lin called in a concerned voice. The vision faded as his laughter echoed in my head. I turned to Lin and stared at her. "Are you alright?"
Yeah, just a little deja vu. Let's get seated and eat some grub okay?" I forced a smile and led her to an empty table. As I sat down I noticed that Kurama was glancing my way before turning to whisper something to Hiei. Genkai was with Shizuru, Yukina, and Kuwabara. Shizuru was staring at me passively. I raised an eyebrow and she turned to the main table. I looked up as everyone silenced as Keiko stood.
"I just want to thank all my friends and family for coming and encouraging me with my engagement. I must also thank my fiancee, Jairi, for allowing me to do this. Please enjoy the food, drinks, and music! Thank you." She sat down and smiled lovingly at her fiancee. I watched as the food was handed out as well as the drinks. I didn't eat much, so Lin took it. She's got a fast metabolism. I just stayed with the drinks. I watched as the music began and everyone started to dance. Lin excused herself to mingle as Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara came over and sat down.
"Hey guys," I raised my glass to them and took a sip. Kuwabara and Kurama shook their heads.
"So Yusuke, where have you been? Every time we go to your place your mother says you are out." Kurama asked questionally.
"I've been around..." I glanced at Kuwabara. I'm surprised he didn't blab the whole situation to Koenma and them. Kurama didn't seem to like my answer though.
"For three years Yusuke?" He raised an eyebrow. I simply looked at him and shrugged. Hiei stared at me with his cold eyes. I put my glass down and looked at them all.
"So, do you guys even know this Jairi?" I asked with no emotion. Kuwabara's eyes widened.
"Why do you ask Urameshi?" He inquired.
"He stirs up some bad feelings that's all." I answered and sat back. So they are letting Keiko marry some bum they don't know. Why did I care? She broke up with me. Am I jealous? No, I can't be. But she is my best friend and I want what's best for her. I sighed and stood up. "Excuse me..." I walked away from the table wanting to be alright for the moment. Damn him....damn my father.
~~~
It was about three hours into the party and people only started to get drunk. I didn't though, I was born from a woman who lives on it. Its in my blood. Shizuru seems to be the same, must be her tolerance. Lin was drinking sparcely. Kurama and Hiei weren't even trying. I smiled as I saw Keiko look at Lin and I. I would catch looks of jealous when I leaned into Lin to tell her a joke, or make a comment on the party. She would laugh and Keiko would avert her gaze. It was a cycle I didn't like. I was about to the main table and give Keiko my gift when it happened. Like I said, I didn't want to leave home without my guns.
Men wearing dark colored clothing stormed the place and locked up us in it. Keiko was in the arms of her fiancee and the families were huddled together. Lin and I were in opposite sides of the room glancing at each other but never moving. I heard Genkai whisper to Hiei and Kurama not to draw their weapons in front of the humans. And Shizuru had her hands full calming Kuwabara down. I counted the men. There was thirteen in all. Thirteen is an unlucky number. I unbottoned my dark green silk dress shirt as I watched the men. I looked back at Lin. My eyes told her to make a distraction that would attract most of their attention. My request went unheeded as I felt a gun to my head.
"Up Mister!" The man said. I slowly stood up with my eyes on the far wall. I glanced at Keiko to see her crying and Jarai holding her back. He didn't pat me down. That as a good thing for me, bad for him.
"Can I take out my cigarettes?" I asked. He looked at his superior, who glared but nodded. I slowly reached into my pocket and pulled out my cigarettes and lighter. Putting the cigarette in my mouth I lit it. "How old are you kid?"
"I'm fifteen!" He whispered and pressed the gun to my shoulder. I blew out smoke. "I'm not afraid of death either Mister!"
"That's all well and good. But you ain't gonna leave here dead kid." I smirked as he came around in front of me. I heard Keiko cry out but I didn't remove my eyes from the kid.
"Like you could do anything!" Again the muzzle of the gun was into my shoulder. I sighed and decided for me to be the distraction for Lin. I glanced at her and she nodded, her hand going to her garter holster.
"I could but I ain't," I mumbled from behind the cigarette as I began to take off my jacket. All the attackers were looking at me. They all saw my two guns and I smirked. Not understanding what a 'high and classy' man at a party would have a gun. I quickly spit my cigarette into the kid's face causing him to drop the gun and hold his face. I drew my gun with my right hand as I knocked the kid out with my left. I pointed my gun at the men and fired the bullets into their shoulders, arms, hands, legs, knees....anything that wouldn't kill that. Lin was also firing. We made sure that they were too hurt to pick up their guns, but not dead. Lin and I turned toward the man near the main table to see him holding Keiko at gun point. Lin threw her gun aside as the man started to Keiko as a shield. My hand started to shake as I saw him hold Keiko.
"Put the gun down Mister or the girl gets it!" He shouted. My hand was shaking so badly that I couldn't make off a shot if I wanted to. I holstered my gun and unstrapped it from around my arms. I threw it the wall where it made a loud smack. I glared at the man. "Now let's make a deal...come to the table." I had my hands raised as I slowly made my way to the table. Once at the table the man sniggered. "So, you are the famous Street Gunner, the Killer Urameshi..." I flinched. I hated that nickname, I only got it because I killed a guy from seven hundred yards away with a rifle. "Alright...I'll make a deal you for her." Keiko's eyes widened as I stared at her.
"Urameshi don't!" Kuwabara shouted before being gagged by his sister. I turned to see Genkai's wide stare, Kurama's surprised look, Kuwabara's frighten look, Yukina's tearful eyes, and Shizuru unbelievable look. I turned to the bad guy and sighed.
"You want me you have me..." I said. I heard Keiko's scream as the gun was pointed at me and shot off. I felt my body be thrown backwards then heard another shot as I slammed into the ground. Blackness clouding my vision.
~~~
I woke up feeling pain in my chest. I reached my hand up to it and felt a rip in my shirt and a dent in my armored vest. I groaned. Suddenly shouts of my name were heard. I opened my eyes to see everyone standing around me. I was still on the ground. I slowly sat up and looked around. I saw Genkai's unushered tears evaporate, Kuwabara gapping at me, Yukina smiling with tear streaks down her cheeks, and Lin grinning like a fool. I felt someone collide into me from the side and turned to see Keiko crying into my shoulder. I blinked not realizing what happened.
"My god Yusuke, you are an idiot. The guy shot you, then I shot him!" Lin said. I blinked again.
"You only had one gun though!" I said as I hugged Keiko.
"Never underestimate a woman." She wink and slipped her .44 back into her dress between her breasts. I nodded and looked down at Keiko.
"Hey, hey I'm alive..." I said quietly. Hiei snorted.
"Yusuke you made a large risk." Kurama said as he helped me stand. "Too large..."
"She's was my friend since I was young, what else am I gonna do? Sit and watch?" I said as I took out the bracelet from my pocket, not letting her see it. I opened her palm and dropped it in it as she stood. I closed her palm and kissed her forehead. I stepped away from her and smiled. "An exciting engagement party? I'll skip who ever has another one." I tried to lighten the mood. I looked at Lin.
"Let's go Yusuke, we go paper work to do." She emphizased work and I understood. Standing my full height I cracked my back. "Lazy bum..." She commented. I rolled my eyes and headed out with Lin. I think they were too shocked at the gift I got Keiko because I heard a gasp behind me as I left.
Lin got into her car and started it. She leaned over and opened a window calling out to me. "Yusuke, the cops will be here shortly. Like I said. We need to vanish for the rest of the night.." I pulled my helmet out of the motorcycle and nodded to Lin. She backed up and waited for me.
"Yusuke!" We both looked up to see Kurama standing there. I looked at Lin.
"Go on without me, I'll see you tomorrow." She nodded and drove off. Kurama walked to my motorcycle and looked at me. "Yes...?"
"I want to know why you left us all those years ago. Clearly you are not stay with your mother anymore. Why are you avoiding us?" Kurama asked calmly. I looked at Kurama soberly before pulling out my second helmet. I held it out to Kurama and got on my motorcyle.
"Get on..." I had left my guns and shoulder holsters in the motorcycle. No more shooting for the rest of the night. I stared at Kurama as he took the helmet. I never told anyone, but I always felt comfortable around Kurama. "Come on, I have to visit my mom." I said as I put my helmet on and started my motorcyle. I felt Kurama get on behind me. He wrapped his arms around my waist. I revved my arms and looked up at the building to see Keiko with her fiancee smiling at me.
"Yusuke?" Jairi mouthed thank you to me and I nodded. "You alright?" Kurama asked as I watched Jairi pull Keiko into an embrace.
"Fine..." I revved the engine again and speeded past the cop car that came in. I waved at the cop, who I knew, as he flashed a smile and headed inside. Kurama tightened his grip as I headed to my mom's apartment.
