Scared
Chapter 2
I zig-zagged through the traffic heading to my mom's house. I laughed when Kurama held on tighter. I guess my driving spooked him. Not surprised. I looked up at the apartment building as I rolled into a parking space. I turned off the engine and took off my helmet. Kurama got off and took his helmet off too. I smiled as his shaken look and go off the motorcycle and puts the helmets away. I locked up the Yamaha and got into the elevator. Kurama followed me. I stared into the mirrors as we went up. Kurama looked at me in the mirrors. I was getting a little irrated at him watching me. I turned to face him to see him smiling. "What's with the smile?" I asked. He chuckled.
"I haven't seen you in three years. You show up at Keiko's engagement party where some thugs try to crash. It seems you are always where the action is." Kurama told me. I shrugged as the elevators opened.
"I'm lucky I guess..." I stepped out with Kurama following.
"Lucky, that's a very optimisitic way to look at it." He said as I stopped at my mom's apartment. I laughed and knocked on the door.
"Who is it?" My mother questioned. I smirked wanting to play around with her head. I turned to Kurama and put a finger to my lips. I cleared my voice to make it deeper.
"Mrs. Atsuko Urameshi, its the police. Open this door." I turned to see Kurama smiling holding in his laughter. I turned to the door to see my mom open it.
"Yusuke!" She glared at me and slapped my arm. "Don't do that! You gave me a heart attack!" She looked at Kurama. "Nice to see you again Kurama."
"Thank you Atsuko." Kurama bowed. I raised an eyebrow, Kurama saw and explained. "She insisted we all call her by her first name." Ah, I guess Mrs. Urameshi made my mom think she was old. Ha! She can feel old!
"Come in please, I was just having a drink." My mom opened the door wider. I walked in with Kurama. My mom closed the door and locked it. "So who do I owe the visit to Yusuke or Kurama?"
"I just tagged along Atsuko-san. Yusuke went to Keiko's engagement party." Kurama explained. I turned my head when my mother looked at me.
"So I see..." She walked up to me and poked at the hole in my shirt. "Instincts again?" I knew what she meant. It was our code in front of other people. It meant did I have a nightmare of my father that caused me to wear my guns.
"Yep," I smiled slightly. "Some thugs decided to crash the party, but Lin and I took care of it." My mother nodded and grabbed her glass of what smelled like Black berry brandy.
"There's a shirt in your old room." She said as she sat down. I nodded.
"I'll be right back..." I turned and walked to my old room. It was still as good as new. Reasoning being I usually come here once or twice a week. I chuckled to myself and took off my jacket. I unbottoned my dark green shirt and slowly took it off. I took off my armored vest and looked down at my chest. There was dry blood. The impact of the bullet was stopped before it could kill me, but the armored vest couldn't hold a bullet from not injurying me. I put a hand to my chest where the bullet hit. I was so close the hit it made me bleed. "Never do that again. Check." I murmured as I went to the closet. I decided to change my pant too since I didn't like wearing a suit. I pulled out a pair of blue jeans and a black knitted turtle neck sweater. The style of the sweater was folded down. I liked these sweaters, but don't tell anyone.
I walked out with the suit and vest in a bag. I looked at Kurama who was watching my mother drink. I smirked and decided to leave before she gets worse. "Hey mom, I'll call you later..." Both Kurama and her turned to me.
"Alright Yusuke..." She slurred. "Locked the door on the way out." Kurama stood and smiled. I didn't like the smile. I glared at him as we walked out and I locked the door.
"She told you stories didn't she?" I asked. Kurama's smile widened.
"Better, she showed me pictures..." I groaned. At least all the picture she has were after the court trial. I blocked out the bad memories as the elevator opened. "Its getting late, I can walk home from here Yusuke."
"Naw, get on." I said not bothering for my helmet I started the engine after putting away the bag. "I'll give you a ride home..." Kurama paled slightly. I laughed. "I won't go too fast okay?" He nodded and got on holding my waist again. I slowly backed out of the parking space and headed toward Kurama's house, at the speed limit.
---
I yawned as I got up the next morning. I dropped off Kurama and headed home last night. Didn't get much sleep since the memories kept plaguing my dreams. I washed my face as I stared into the mirror. I saw a flash of his face laughing at me. I growled and punched the bathroom mirror. I watched as shards of the crystalline mirror cut my fist as they fell around the bathroom. My face paled. Memories of the past are making me go insane. After wrapping my fist, I quickly got dressed into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Pulling on my green jacket I walked out of my home locking. I got on my motorcycle and headed toward the station. I arrived the same time as Lin.
"Yo!" She called as she got out of her mustang. I got off my motorcycle and took off my helmet. I put the helmet away and turned to Lin as I put my keys in my pocket. She frowned at me, but didn't say anything. Point for Lin. Two years together and she knows when to shut up. We both headed into the station. Lin waved at the others as I headed straight for the gym that we had on the second floor. "Yusuke...Yusuke..." Lin ran up behind me. I continued until she pulled me back and slammed my back against the wall. I glared at her. Why did she have to be so nosy? Why am I being just an asshole? Maybe cause I didn't get enough sleep. I stared into her cold dark brown eyes. Something flared to life into my own brown eyes.
"Back off..." I heard myself say. What's wrong with me today? I turned my head away from her. "Gomen...I had a late and rough night..."
"I bet..." She said her eyes returning to their cheerful gleam. "How about coming to the shooting range before the gym for a spar?" I raised an eyebrow. Tempting, fighting or shooting...I liked them both.
"Fine," I turned and followed Lin down to the basement to the shooting range. The basement had been soundproof so no one would hear us shooting. She put ear muffs on and threw me a pair. I put them on and pulled out my gun from my shoulder holster. I knew by just pulling it out I had one live round in the barrel. I put on the muffs then hung up a target. I sent it a hundred and twenty five yards away farther than anyone in this precinct can make. Lin and I both raised our guns at the same time. My mind started to wonder immediately after I started to shoot. I finished my magazine before Lin, but I didn't notice. I continued to shoot imaginary bullets as my father entered my mind. All the things he's done to my mother...to me. I felt Lin pull the gun away from with a jerk.
"Space out much Yusuke?" I blinked at her and sighed. She handed me back my gun. I holstered it. My thoughts have been straying too much lately. I need to call in for a vacation and hand my guns in. "You have a visitor." She smiled at me. "A cute one too!" I raised an eyebrow. Lin waved the security to send the 'visitor' into the shooting range. I blinked not believing what I was seeing. It was Kurama.
"What the hell are you doing here? And how did you find which precinct I was in?" I asked. The look on my face must have been hilarious for Lin and Kurama laughed. "What?!" I glared at them.
"Nothing Yusuke..." Lin waved. "Just stop dazing out on me. I might actually need you for something." She smiled and walked out.
"Bitch..." I murmured.
"Heard that!" She shouted before closing the door again. I shook my head and looked at Kurama.
"So, what's up? Any trouble you guys need help on?" I asked curiously. I seriously wanted to know why he was here. It was irking me...yes...irking. I didn't like to be irked.
"Can't two friends catch up on old times?" Kurama asked. I raised an eyebrow.
"Two? No little pissed off short guy following in the trees?" I made him laugh. Well, that does describe Hiei a lot. He does have a tendacy to follow Kurama around.
"Yes, I promise Hiei won't be following us. Nice description though..." Kurama chuckled.
"Come on, let me hand in my badge." I said as I led Kurama out and toward the Captain's office.
"Quiting?" Kurama inquired. I shook my head. "Then what are you doing?"
"I need a vacation," I said. "Didn't have one since I went to the hospital a couple of months ago." I pondered out loud. Kurama breathed in sharply. "Nothing serious happened and I'm still alive aren't I?" I smiled and waved a hand dismissingly. He seemed to take that okay...I guess.
"Still taking chances too I see." Kurama spoke softly. I slowed my step so I was walking beside him. I looked at him as he smiled at me. I decided to leave it. I sighed as we stopped before the captain's office.
"Stay out here, the captain can get a little loud." I warned as I walked into the office without knocking. The old man was short and had spiked blonde hair. He was around 38, and still could kick ass. This was Captain Aki Senki. Him and I were...not on that well of good terms.
"Dammit Yusuke! Knock next time!" He said as he glared at me then continued to go through his files. I smirked.
"You know me Captain." I said smiling. "Anyway...I need to go on vacation." I sounded serious. This caused Aki to stop and look up at me. He knew when I was serious something was wrong.
"Is everything alright?" He asked calmly. I ran a hand through my hair and looked out the window.
"I can't explain it, but I need a vacation." I said to him. He continued to stare at me before smiling a bit.
"Alright, you have made the precinct look good in the last couple months since being in the hospital. You also covered for a few of the normal cops...I'll give you two months paid vacation." My eyes widened the captain was being awful nice. There had to be a catch. "That is, if you come in when I call you for big assignments." See, told you. I sighed and nodded.
"Fine, as long as I get out..." I murmured.
"Good, it starts today...have fun on your vacation Yusuke!" The Captain said cheerily as I walked out. Kurama was talking to Lin as I came out.
"Hey Yusuke, I didn't hear the Captain yell. What did he wrangle you into?" Lin asked.
"I'm on call paid vacation," I said. Lin nodded and Kurama just stared at me. "If there's a big case, he'll call me in. Other than that I got paid vacation for two months."
"Well, at least you get paid." Kurama said with a smile. Lin grinned and walked over to me.
"We still on for that spar? How about tomorrow at your place?" I looked at her and raised an eyebrow.
"That much eager to get your ass kicked Lin?" Kurama chuckled at that. "You know where I live right?"
"Doesn't everyone?" Lin blinked. I scratched my head and looked at Kurama. "YOU MEAN YOUR FRIENDS DON'T!?"
"Only the goofy one from the party did, but I can't hide anymore can I Kurama?" I looked at him, my eyes closing as I smiled. He smiled back at me.
"No, you can't..." He said softly. I opened my eyes and looked at Kurama. He just smiled at me. Okay....weird things happening yet again.
"So I guess you're on for tomorrow Lin." I said as I my pack of cigaretted out. I pulled on out and placed it behind my ear. I glanced at Kurama as I put the pack away. "I guess we should go, want some coffee?" Kurama nodded and smiled. I swear...if I knew Kurama smiled this much I would sign him up for the Charter Happy Club with Botan. I started to lead Kurama out a tall man with black spikey hair rammed his shoulder into mine. I stumble back not being able to keep my balance. I felt hands grab my arms and holds them tightly. I turned to see Kurama staring at the tall man. I stood up and dusted myself off.
"Urameshi! What a pleasant surprise!" I flinched at that voice and didn't look at the man. I know he was grinning at me, I could feel it. "So how is the Killer Urameshi these days?" Again I flinched. The officers around us seemed to quiet down and watch if I was going to slug the guy out. I felt Kurama's eyes on my back as I continued to walk by...or at least tried to. The taller man grabbed my arm, grinning. "Why don't you explain to me again Urameshi...what happen that night?" I turned and looked at his hand not looking him in the eyes. I knew, if I saw his eyes. I would be pulled into the past. I wasn't feeling that lucky today.
"Back off him, Murakai." Lin said coming to my rescue. I sent her a grateful look. She nodded and crossed her arms looking at Murakai. "What's your deal? Finally back on the force and you already take a shot at Yusuke? You know he saved your ass that night." Lin hissed out. Murakai and I were known to...well...lets say we just extremely hate each other. Kurama walked up next to me. I pulled my arm from Murakai's grip and rotated it.
"I see you have a girl now Urameshi," He said. I turned to Kurama, who had a small smile on his lips. I laughed and Lin joined in. "What's so funny?" Murakai growled at me. I smirked, I felt lucky so I looked at him grinning. I gestured to Kurama with my thumb.
"If my friend here was a girl, yea I could understand...but he's a guy." I laughed as I said this. Kurama was also chuckling. I think we got Murakai mad because the next thing I know Lin's shouting my name. In response I pushed Kurama out from behind me and jumped back as Murakai tried to punch me. I was able to block his punch with my arm and caused him to punch the wall that my back slammed into. Murakai pressed his muscular body that out weighed by 100 pounds into the wall. My breath rushed out of me as I held his arm to the wall. His other arm was across my neck cutting off my arm supply. I kept a calm face though, seems my step-dad was good for something. Soon my face contorted with pain as blackness envaded my vision. I lifted my leg up to his thigh and tried to push him away. It didn't work. What the fuck is he?! Steel? I tried to cough but my oxygen lacking lung wouldn't allow it.
"Murakai! Get off of him!" Lin shouted as she pulled him away from me with a few officers. I let go of Murakai and leans back against the wall coughing. Kurama was at my side, glaring at Murakai as he rubbed my back. "Yusuke are you alright?" I looked up with a blank stare. That was too close to home...I was about to release my spirit energy. I rubbed my neck and looked at Lin and waved her off. She frowned and just left to help the officers with Murakai.
"Why does it seem all the tall ones despise you Yusuke?" Kurama asked with a raised eyebrow. I stood up and looked at him. I couldn't help but laugh at that. I kept laughing as I realized it was the truth. The hell should I know why, maybe I'm just that fucking lucky.
