Chapter 1
Strange Dreams

"Kurama look out!" The remaining three demons close in on fox-boy quickly and Yuske knows his injured teammate isn't up to taking them all out at once. Kurama manages to cut two down with his rose whip before the third gets in a good slice on his leg. Hiei cuts the last one down and braces Kurama before he falls.

Yuske jogs over to see to the damage. "Damn fox-boy who did you piss off anyway?" Kurama gives him a smile even though he is covered is various cuts, scrapes, and bruises.

"I don't know exactly what they were after Yuske. I have a feeling it might have been my position as Yomi's second in command, why else would they attack me at Gandarra? I thank you for your assistance."

Yuske grins. "Yeah well 30 on one just didn't seem very fair. I'm just glad we are here. If we had waited the extra day like planned you would have been on your own, hell not even Yomi is here! Guess we can thank your impatience Hiei..."

Hiei snorts as he wraps Kurama's leg. "One does not often question the will of the Jagan... it is rarely wrong." He wraps slowly and meticulously, trying not to cause any more pain for his partner. Kurama is showing no signs of discomfort however. Yuske grins at the two. After all, the only person other than Yukina that Hiei shows a slightly gentle nature toward is Kurama. Hiei is the only one Kurama allows to treat his wounds, doing it himself if Hiei is not available.

Yuske wonders if he will ever understand that twisted relationship.

Hiei eases Kurama onto his bed, being as gentle as he possibly can. The fox will need a few days to recover and Hiei isn't about to leave the ningenkai until his partner can fend for himself.

"Really Hiei, I'm fine. I just need rest." Hiei snorts.

"I'm not leaving fox. I don't need to scrape you off the sidewalk and find a way to explain to your Mother why you were fighting for your life alone and injured."

Kurama sighs. "That is assuming I will be attacked."

"Your record as of late is rather shoddy. First the games and now another planned assault just about three months later?" Hiei's eyes narrow.

"I know, but you shouldn't be kept inside for so long, I know it irritates you. Why don't you visit Yukina? You can check in on her and Meiyo, maybe spend some time with them. You'll still be close enough to sense if I am in danger, after all, my apartment is only ten miles from the temple. You are fast, and I am not completely crippled. Come now Hiei, you don't really want to be cooped up all day and night do you? I know you haven't been to see Yukina yet and it will bug you until you do." Kurama grins at him, knowing that Hiei's resolve is wavering at the prospect of being able to see his family and keep his partner safe at the same time.

"Go on Hiei, I'll go right to sleep I promise."

Hiei sighs and glares at Kurama. "Go to sleep before I leave. I'll be gone three hours and not a minute more." Kurama laughs and pulls the blankets up over himself. The Fox is asleep withing minutes, his half ningen body completely exhausted from the day's events. Why does he always look so fragile when he's asleep?

Hiei feels a twinge of guilt at leaving his partner in such a vulnerable state. It is the Fox's idea though... and Yukina has gotten rather attached to me. Hiei jumps onto the windowsill and takes one last look at Kurama, he shoves down a rising wave of panic before slipping out. Why can't I rid myself of this trepidation? He races over the rooftops and eventually through the forest. I've been completely irrational since he retrieved my mind, by the sounds of it I was before that too. At least then there was a reason... but now...

He shakes his head as he races up the stairs. Hiei has found himself in the Ningenkai more and more. He tells Mukuro it is to see his family, but he can tell she doesn't believe him. While he does enjoy seeing his family, the real trouble is the constant nagging in the back of his mind. The worry that the fox is in trouble. He has never even worried about Yukina this much, and Kurama is fully capable of defending himself...

So why?

Hiei pushes his troubled thoughts aside as he spots his sister, he moves in silently and hovers in the tree above her, careful not to disturb her birds.

"Hello Brother, it has been a while, ne?"

Hiei smiles to himself and drops out of the tree, right next to her. She isn't surprised in the least. "You are getting better Sister."

She smiles and laughs at him. "Not really... I only know when you are around. I don't really hear you or see you, I just know that you are there." Hiei nods to himself, completely understanding.

They sit together, Yukina babbling and Hiei listening even if his mind isn't really on her.

***
Kurama makes his way down the hall slipping through the shadows silently, tracking his prey. The place is darkly lit and sterile, a laboratory perhaps. Painfully white concrete walls with the dull glow of insufficient florescent overhead lights are entirely harsh. He slips along without so much of a whisper of sound; his human body is not so stealthy. Silver hair flows behind him and his ear twitches excitedly as the smallest of sounds reach them.

Silver? Ears? I must have taken Yoko's form...

Funny that he doesn't remember transforming. Come to think of it, where is this place? Who is he hunting?

Hiei slips into view, and Yoko realizes he has been tracking his partner. Kurama mentally relaxes a bit. Hiei will know exactly what is going on. They have obviously just been separated during a mission of some sort, and Kurama could just press Hiei for their objective here... right?

He moves behind Hiei, tall shadow slightly overcasting the Kooromie. Hiei whirls around, hand on the hilt of his sword... ready to strike. But he relaxes when he sees Yoko, removing his hand and releasing his stance. Why do his eyes show a touch of relief? Has he been worried?

Hiei has lost the advantage.

Advantage?

Yoko watches in horror as his body acts on its own volition, raising a hand and striking his defenseless and stunned partner. Hiei's head snaps to the side and then into the wall. He rebounds with and snap and falls to the floor in a crumbled, broken, heap. A bright red sliver of blood leaks from his temple; it runs slowly down his face along the still boyish curve, pools slightly at the tip of his chin and drips with a patter onto the concrete. Hiei doesn't move.

Drip, drip, drip.

The job is complete.

***
Kurama sits bolt up in bed, sweat leaking from every pore his hands shaking just slightly. The stabbing pains that shoot through him force his back down.

I'm injured?

"Stupid Fox." Kurama looks at the opposite wall. Hiei is sitting there with a worried expression... well... what Kurama has come to interpret as his worried expression, others would find it a rather bored look. A wave of relief washes through him, the horrifying grip of the dream easing away. Suddenly there is a sense of de-ja-vu, only last time, it had been Hiei awakening in his bed as he sat next to the opposite wall. Just what is going on anyway?

"What? Where?" Kurama starts off in confusion.

"You must have lost more blood than I thought. You were attacked at Gandarra. I brought you back to your apartment to recuperate and you sent me off to Yukina's. You were having a dream when I came back. Never seen you sweat like that before... bad one?"

Kurama takes a deep breath and relaxes back into his pillow, his world set right again. "Yes Hiei I remember. Bad dreams do have a way of getting to a person. It has just taken me a moment to recover."

Hiei's eyes flash some unknown emotion. "It must have been gruesome... to put you out of sorts."

Kurama just smiles. "Not so brutal. At least not as brutal as some of my dreams."

"What is so different about this one Fox?"

"I attacked you." Kurama finds his blanket very interesting as he says this, refusing to look Hiei in the eye. He feels as though he has betrayed Hiei somehow, even though it was just a dream.

"Stupid ningen emotions are getting to you Fox. Partners don't attack each other without good reason. It was just a dream, it can't hurt you or me."

Kurama shakes his head slowly.

"Sometimes Hiei, dreams can be much more hurtful than reality."

Hiei looks surprised by Kurama's statement, his eyes asking Kurama to explain.

"You have control in reality, over what you do and say. You choose your own path and follow it through of your own volition. In a dream you are at the mercy of that dream. The dream does what it wants to; without any regard for what you want. Really Hiei, after all the times you've called out for Yukina in your sleep... reliving the Jagan implant I can only imagine... I should think that you would understand that better than anyone." Hiei simply nods. He does understand, maybe he always has. But just like anything else as of late...

He needs Kurama to show it to him.

A/N: OMG... is it true? It is! I finally got the first chapter of the sequel out to you all.

Ok so I know you all are thinking... WTF? This is going to be about dreams... and you would be right. Or more appropriately this is going to be about perception and choice. You'll see what I mean eventually.

I am very happy to be talking at you people again, just as I know you will enjoy my seemingly endless cliffhangers that my chapters always seem to end on. I swear I don't plan it... or maybe they just all seem like cliffhangers when you know what happens next?

Hm... I'll have to ponder on that one some more... I'll let you know eventually what I decide. I shall stop wasting your time now.
