Chapter 1 - First Encounter
By Clow Angel
-----------
She sighed to herself as she turned the corner, heading to her new school. 'I just know I'm gonna hate this..' A few minutes later, she arrived at the gate of the school. 'Great.. it's a huge school.. and I doubt I'll find my way either.. Oh well..' She enters past the gate and into the building. Searching for the Principal's office, she bumps into someone sending papers flying in all directions. Landing roughly on the ground, she looked up, narrowing her eyes, ready to beat some sense into the culprit who knocked her onto the ground. Instead, she finds herself staring into a pair of emerald eyes. Once their eyes met, her angry expression melted away. 'Such exotic eyes' was the first thought that passed through her head.
-----------
"Are you alright, Miss?" I was snapped out of my odd thoughts by his feminine voice. I blinked, realizing his hand was out, offering me help up. I glanced at the offered hand before deciding to accept his help. Finally catching a good view of the boy, I wondered if red hair was normal for a Japanese boy.
"Thanks." I took his hand as he pulled me onto my feet gently. "Sorry about bumping into you. I was looking for the office" he explained.
While we spoke he picked up the papers along with my help.
"First day?"
I nodded with my usual stoic mask placed on my face. "Yes, as a matter of fact."
"I'll show you where the office is. Follow me."
"Thanks… again." Again, no facial expression.
"No problem." He smiled at me then gestured for me to follow. After several twists and turns we stopped in front of an office with 'Principal' written on the door.
"Thanks, once again." And once again, I didn't smile. I don't know why, but I just don't smile often. I guess it'll stay that way for a while.
He nodded. "No problem. Perhaps I'll see you around." He turned and left after smiling again. I nodded and replied, more to myself than to him. "Perhaps."
I knocked on the office door and met the principal. He was a tall round man. I guess he's around six feet tall. He handed me my schedule after I told him my name and explained it was my first day. He told me I would have a student guide once I got introduced to my first class. He explained we have the same schedule so the guide will show me around school. I nodded and headed off to class after asking several students for directions.
I stepped into the classroom and found it half full already. The guy I bumped into was in there reading a book.
He looked up to face me as I entered the classroom. I don't know how he knew I was there, but he did. Once again, he gave me one of those charming smiles. I nodded at him as a reply. I spoke with the teacher, explaining my situation and she told me to sit anywhere. I chose a seat by the window and stared out of it, thinking about the past events with my brother. I realized a few seconds later I was sitting in front of him. A few minutes later the bell rang signaling the start of first period.
-----------
I was walking to my classroom when I bumped into her. My papers for the sensei were scattered into the air after the collision. She fell from it and I was standing there in confusion. I didn't see her round the corner and well, she obviously didn't see me. After the papers settled, I found myself staring into a pair of blood-red crimson eyes. They looked very similar to rubies. They were narrowed in anger. However, once our eyes met, the anger faded into one of blankness. Briefly wondering what was going through her head, I asked if she was alright. Snapping out of whatever trance she was in, she gave me a blank stare. I then, got a good look at her.
She had long, straight, jet black hair with blue highlights that seemed to flow endlessly and pooled around her on the floor. I offered her my hand, and she hesitantly took it with a simple word of thanks. She explained she was looking for the office.
I asked "First day?" while I kneeled on the floor to retrieve the papers. She kneeled down next to me to help.
She replied "Yes, as a matter of fact." as she nodded once.
"I'll show you where the office is. Follow me." Again, she gave me her thanks. I told her it was no problem. I smiled at her. Then, I beckoned her to follow me. Several minutes and a few hallways later we arrived at the office.
"Thanks.. again." she said and I nodded. "No problem. Perhaps I'll see you around." I smiled once more then left her in front of the office.
I entered my classroom several minutes later with the papers for my sensei. I then took my usual seat by the window and took out a book to read. About ten minutes later, the girl I bumped into came into the class. I looked up when I felt her aura and smiled at her. And once again she nods. I guess she doesn't smile much. Heh.. kind of like a certain fire demon I know. Leaving my musings behind, I went back to reading my book.
Soon after, I realized she was sitting in front of me looking out the window seeming to be in deep thought.
-----------
"Okay, class. Settle down. Today we have a new student. Her name is Rena..." the teacher stares down at a piece of paper. "..Chiwaru Rena. Introduce yourself."
-----------
I stood and turned around to face the class. "I'm Chiwaru Rena. I enjoy singing and I happen to love plants and animals. I'm also interested in martial arts." I sat back down.
"Okay class, we'll begin now."
I pretend to pay attention in class just so it won't look suspicious when I ace the tests and pass the class when I just transferred. 'My, this is boring.'
-----------
In the middle of class...
'KNOCK KNOCK' The teacher stops halfway through a sentence and heads towards the door. She speaks with someone for several minutes then proceeds to return to the front of the class.
"Minamino Shuichi-kun, you will be the student guide for our new transfer student, Chiwaru Rena for this week since you two have the same schedules."
"Hai sensei."
Rena looks up from her work. 'Him again? Does my school life revolve around him or something?' A pause in her thoughts. 'So his name is Shuichi, huh?'
"Okay, class. Take out your books and let's start on the next chapter." The class continues smoothly as the teacher explains photosynthesis for the third time for the slower students.
-----------
'RIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNG'
'Finally! This class is over. I love plants, but this is ridiculous..' I packed my bag and headed out the door towards the awaiting Shuichi.
-----------
I'm already outside of the classroom, leaning against the wall waiting for Rena-san, the transfer student. I wonder why she doesn't smile. Something must have happened, but then again it's none of my business.
-----------
Rena is finally out the door and heading towards Shuichi who was still leaning on the opposite wall.
"So, where's next class?"
"It's on the third floor. Come on, we don't want to be late, now do we."
Rena looked around herself and finds a good majority of the girls glaring at her. 'Did I do something to them? I don't remember using anything in this town yet.'
The two walked side by side, talking very little. As they passed the hallways, a few guys gave her approving looks, while the girls seemed to make a hobby out of glaring at her. She promptly ignored them, not knowing what they were glaring about. A minute later, she realized many of the girls were staring at Shuichi at her side with longing looks. 'Oooh.. so that's it.'
Rena noticed Shuichi didn't seem to mind the looks and figured he was used to it, but he did say a few hellos and greetings when greeted.
He managed not to sweatdrop at the glares the girl next to him were receiving.
Soon, they were at their next class. It went something like the class before did. Rena introduced herself, sat by a window, and proceeded to pretend she was paying attention.
The next two classes past by without event.
-----------
Finally, lunch period came. The redhead and the student he was responsible for, headed off to the cafeteria. Rena noted he was hesitant to go in. 'I wonder why he is though. It's just the cafeteria.'
Sighing in defeat, he pushed open the door and headed to a table by the large glass windows. Rena followed him, not knowing where else to go. They both took out their bentos and started eating their lunch.
"Rena-san, after school, I will show you around the other parts of school for about an hour so you won't get lost in the future."
"Okay."
"How about I meet you by the front gate after gym, which is our last class?"
"Sure."
Before it was even five minutes into the period, about two dozen girls have encircled the table trying to talk to Shuichi at once. "Ladies, how about we find another time to converse?" He strained to keep the smile on his face while holding back a sweatdrop.
Rena, who was sitting beside him trying hard to eat her lunch was getting annoyed, but hid it behind that always present cool mask of hers. Very seldom would it slip. All she wanted was a quiet lunch period but it seemed that won't be happening anytime soon. 'Next time, I'm sitting far away from him. Need peace and quiet.'
Kurama finally managed to persuade the girls to leave. Several guys came up to the table as well, trying to talk to the new girl. Rena proceeded to ignore them. However, one of them grabbed her arm. She looked up at him straight in the eye. She was about to punch him flying when Shuichi spoke up.
"I'd appreciate it if you let her go." His eyes hardened as he spoke, as he gave them his infamous cold glare/stare. The one holding her arm decided to be stupid and retorted. "What if I won't?"
"Then I won't be held responsible for what happens."
"Pretty-boy is threatening me?"
"I don't call it a threat. I call it a promise." His voice remaining smooth.
"Let me go, or I'll do something you'll regret." Rena told them in her monotone voice.
"Now the pretty girl thinks she can take me on?"
Kurama noted her battle aura was rising steadily and wondered what kind of person she was. Her aura right now, was a swirl of colors. From red to blue to green to silver.
The big guy took her chin into his hand. "How 'bout we have a good time together tonight.. at MY place?" he stated more than asked in a suggestive tone, grinning cockily.
"How about not?" In no time at all the big guy was on the floor holding his arm with Rena standing over him. That was definitely not how the arm should be as it was twisted the opposite way and it didn't look too good. A few bystanders faces were tinted a nice green color and seemed to be ready to puke out their lunch. The other members of his gang hurriedly ran away. She sat back down and proceeded to finish her lunch. Shuichi stared at her in surprise. 'How can she be so calm?'
Kurama also sat back down as a teacher approached asking what all the commotion was about. He explained to him what happened.
"Oh my. Thank you for the explanation, Shuichi-kun. If anything like that happens again, tell me and I will take care of it immediately."
"No problem, sensei." The teacher turns and leaves as a few students carried the crying guy whose arm is twisted the wrong way, to the nurse's office.
"It seems you have great respect from the teachers."
"Being a top student does help a bit." He smiles again. "By the way, Rena-san. How did you do that?"
"Martial arts."
"Souka." 'She has great strength and incredible youki. Her reiki, which proves she's human, can probably overpower Yusuke's. Her youki practically screams 'youkai!', but I'm not sure which she is. She doesn't seem to want to cause harm, so I'll leave it at that, but I still have to keep an eye on her just in case.'
Lunch period went on with no more unusual happenings. Soon it was time for gym class. The two headed into their respective locker rooms. (IT'S CO-ED GYM!)
-----------
Kurama noted she has great stamina, reflex, speed, and agility as he watched her run the track, play volleyball, dodgeball, and various other games.
-----------
'That Shuichi is a youkai. I can sense it. When he stood up for me during lunch, the energy radiating off of him was a dead giveaway. He seems to be well-liked by the school teachers and students alike. Especially the girls. He's fast, strong, and probably more.' She turned her thoughts back to the current game of dodgeball.
At the end of gym class the gym teacher asked her if she wanted to join the volleyball team. Rena decided to join. 'I mean, why not. I have nothing else to do since my so-called job starts late in the evening anyway.'
After having spoken with the teacher, she headed to the locker room, changed, grabbed her bag and books, and headed for the school gates. Shuichi was already there leaning against one gate with his hands in his pockets. He smiled as I approached. He stood up straight and headed towards me.
"Shall we start the tour?" I nodded.
I was shown the clubs, I joined several too such as the gardening club and cooking club. I was also shown the gardens, the auditorium, the libraries, the computer rooms, several classrooms for my upcoming days at the school, and the music room. Afterwards, we exchanged our goodbyes and we each headed off to our own homes.
-----------
'I wonder why Yusuke and Kuwabara-kun didn't show up to school today. Keiko didn't either. Probably another mission.' After a minute or so of walking, I felt a familiar energy signature. "Hello, Hiei."
"Hn. Did something happen at your ningen school? You seem to be in deep thought."
"Why yes as a matter of fact. There's a new student. It seems she's a youkai."
"A youkai? Any evil energy?"
Kurama shakes his head. "None."
"Hn. Then there's nothing to worry about."
'Come to think of it, she's kind of like Hiei. She doesn't talk much. In fact, she talks as little as possible. Stoic face of hers betrays no emotion. Black hair, red eyes… except she's around 5ft 6. Hiei's a lot shorter.' At the last thought, he chuckled.
"Hn. What's so amusing?"
"Nothing. Nothing at all." he smiles.
"Hn. Stupid fox."
-----------
Later that night, Kurama is laying in bed, staring up at the ceiling thinking about nothing in particular when several large bodies of energy show up, causing him to suddenly sit up. Hiei taps at his window a few seconds later asking for entrance. Kurama gets up and opens the window.
"You felt it too?"
"Hn."
Kurama gets dressed and jumps out the window after Hiei. Kurama sticking to the ground, while Hiei sticks to the trees. They arrive in the area where the energy was the strongest and finds a single female fighting off three youkai. She was dressed in all black. It was chinese clothing, similar to Kurama's only it was the feminine style as you can see her slim legs as she ran. There was a slit down both sides for movement of her legs. There were silver-blue designs on it though. She moved too fast for them to clearly make out the designs. Her hair was put up in a mid-high ponytail, held up by a single silver-blue ribbon. The said female turns to face the intruders and eyes widen a little in surprise. During that split second, the three injured youkai decide to attack when she's distracted. They caught her in surprise and a gash appears on her side and back. She falls to the ground hard with blood pooled around her.
(her clothes are similar to the gay demon who Yusuke fought when they went to rescue Yukina. You know the demon who has blue hair? a horn on his head? and as Yusuke says has fake boobs?)
Kurama takes out his rose whip and slices one up while Hiei takes out another with his superior speed and katana. A whip made of what seemed to be white light sliced through the third one, disintegrating it. Hiei and Kurama turned and found the female holding the whip. It soon disappeared as she passed out from blood loss.
"You know, if we didn't appear, she would have probably taken them out seeing as the three youkai were already injured badly and there were only minor scratches on her."
"Hn."
'That 'hn' meant 'you're right.''
"We better take her to my house to clean up those wounds and for her to heal."
"That won't be necessary. She's already healing. Look." Hiei points to her still form which was glowing in a blue silver light.
"I see you're right. I'll take her with me anyway. It'll be dangerous if we leave her out here in such a state." Kurama picks her up bridal style as he speeds through the forest to his human home. Hiei follows in the trees.
