Kaya looked out the window at the rising sun. She yawned and got to her feet from the window seat from where she had been perched. She took one last look out the window and walked to the bathroom. She looked at herself in the mirror, her sapphire eyes bright against her onyx hair. She began to do her morning routine when her brother knocked on her bathroom door. She opened it and looked at him questioningly, his green eyes meeting her's; he never bothered her in the morning. “What?” she asked with her toothbrush in her mouth. “I just wanted to tell you I love you.” He said looking at the floor. “Huh?” she asked confused. “ Just promise you'll never forget me ok?” He said looking into her eyes then beginning to walk away. “I promise?” She said closing the door and shrugging off her brother's odd behavior. She finished her morning routine and headed off to school. She was just about to go to her favorite class of the day, Reading, when a teacher came and called her to the door. “Yes sir?” she asked the teacher. “K-Kaya y-your brother, Samuel, he-he…” stammered the teacher who was as pale as a ghost. “He's what?” she asked beginning to panic. “He's in the hospital… he-he tried to commit suicide.” The teacher ran quickly to the bathroom where the sound of vomiting could be heard. Everything was a blur as Kaya ran to the hospital to see her brother. “You can go in. He doesn't have much time left. He cut his main vein and lost a lot of blood. He wants you to be there with him.” said the doctor. Kaya nodded and went in. “Samuel?” she said looking at the bed where Samuel laid. “K-Kaya, y-you m-m-made it.” He said smiling. “Samuel, why would you try to kill yourself?” Kaya said sitting next to him on the bed taking his hand. “I've got nothing in this life. In the heaven I'll have everything.” He said laughing. Kaya looked at her brother, he was truly insane. “No, Samuel, you won't. If you commit sucide you don't go to heaven. I don't think I'll see you in the after life.” She began to cry silently. He lifted his hand with a bit of difficulty and stroked her cheek tenderly wiping away her tears. “I won't I've lived my life as a loyal worshiper of the lord. I shall be rewarded.” He said looking at her. “Samuel…” she said looking at him. His hand suddenly dropped to the bed and he took in and let out his last breath as he died with his insane smile on his face and his eyes open. Kaya continued to cry.

Kaya awoke with a start to the sound of her alarm clock, she felt justified to throw it at the wall, with a thud it stopped ringing and Kaya put her head in her hands as she sat up and groaned. “Not again…” she said rubbing her eyes and slowly easing out of her queen sized bed and headed to the bathroom to begin her morning routine with a bit of difficulty. Kaya looked at the door with “Samuel” written in red paint on it. “Samuel, why did you leave me? You were all I had left…” Kaya said looking at the door to her late brother's room. She hadn't gone in there in three years. Had it really been that long? Three years? Five since mom and dad died in that car crash? I don't know… Maybe six? Oh well I have to get ready for school. Kaya thought as she walked past Samuel's room to the bathroom at the end of the hall. She brushed her hair, washed her face, brushed her teeth, got dressed in her black boy's school uniform, and went down the two flights of grand staircases to get to the main floor of the mansion. Most of the rooms weren't used but, they were all dusted and cleaned every week. Kaya walked into the kitchen and began to make herself an egg sandwich. She began to eat in the silence of her kitchen when there was a knock at the door. Kaya stood and walked to the front door and opened it to see three people standing at her door. “What?” she asked coldly. The first to speak was a girl with brown hair and brown eyes wearing the girl's uniform to Kaya's school. “Hi! I'm Keiko. We were told by the school that we were supposed to say with you while we were in town.” She said happily. “You are?” Kaya asked pulling out her cell phone and checking her messages, sure enough there was one from the school saying that seven transfer students were supposed to be staying with her as a way to pass all her classes as long as they were living in her house. “Ok, you are. The message said seven. Where are the rest?” Kaya asked looking at the girl with blue hair and pink eyes then to the girl with aqua hair and red eyes. “They're coming tomorrow. I'm Botan by the way.” said the girl with pink eyes and blue hair. “And you guys came early why?” Kaya asked looking at the girl with red eyes. “We wanted to see the house before the boys.” Said Botan “Whatever…” said Kaya stepping back so they could get in the house. “The quiet on is?” she said gesturing to the red-eyed girl. “I am Yukina. I am sorry if we have inconvenienced you.” She said bowing. Kaya blinked, “Ok… Let me show you to your rooms.” She said walking up the staircase. She led then to the second floor of the house and pointed to both ends of the hall. “Pick what room you want. The further to the right the lighter and brighter the colors get. The further to the left the darker the room.” She said watching them run to the right and slowly following them. Botan ended up picking the pale pink room, Keiko picked the bright pink room, and Yukina picked the aqua room across the hall from Keiko and Botan. “Hurry up! If I'm late again I'm going to be suspended again.” Kaya said annoyed. The three girls came out in their uniforms and Kaya began walking down the stairs. Botan paused and looked at the stairs that went to the top floor and asked, “What's up there?” Kaya paused and turned to look at her. “My room and some other rooms are there.” “Can we go up there and look at them?” Botan asked. “No. That's my one rule. Never go up those stairs or look into any of the rooms. Am I clear?” Kaya said more coldly than she had intended. All three girls nodded then looked at each other. Kaya continued down the stairs and walked out the front door followed by the girls who were talking among themselves. They were halfway to the school when Kaya stopped and turned around to look at them, they stopped talking immediately. “This is where I bid you adieu.” She said making an elegant bow. “What!!! Where are you going????” said Keiko. “I have a reputation you don't want to get involved with. If you show up with me you get your face beat in.” She said apathetically. “We don't know where to go though.” said Botan. “Walk around the corner, you'll see people there in our uniform. Ask one of them where the school is and they'll take you there.” Kaya said. “Ok.” They responded then walked around the corner. Kaya waited a few moments then followed. She walked past them not even glancing at them. They were talking to Anna Maria, a ditsy 5'5 blonde from France who got in the school on a scholarship she didn't deserve, but they'd get to the school. When Kaya walked by Keiko asked Anna Maria who she was. “Her. That's Kaya Tao. She's a total witch. She was born in Seoul, Korea.” Anna Maria said snobbishly. “Really? Then what is she doing here in Russia?” Botan asked. “Her parents died in a car crash. Her brother committed suicide. She lives alone in a house across town by herself, no maids or anything. She's a qualified freak.” responded Anna Maria. “Interesting.” said Keiko absentmindedly. “Oh! We have to get to school! We're going to be late!” Anna Maria exclaimed. They then rushed off down the road. Kaya turned and walked in to the school yard. “Hey! Tao! Ready to get your butt kicked?!” shouted one of the boys standing by a tree with three other idiots. Kaya continued walking. “Hey! I'm talking to you!” he shouted again and walking up to her and grabbing a handful of her hair and pulling her head back so he could look at her. “Did you hear me? I asked you a question.” He said narrowing his eyes. Kaya merely spat in his face, punched him in the stomach, he let go and she kept walking. “G-get her.” He said holding his stomach. The other three boys advanced on her. Kaya stopped and looked at the boys. She shifted her eyes and looked at the boys that were slowly circling her like vultures. One stopped, Kaya tensed, he moved to punch her, she dodged and knocked into one of the others. He grabbed her arms and held her there while the others punched her in various places. Kaya used the boy holding her as a lever and kicked the others in their faces, then she kicked her leg straight up and got the one holding her down. He let go and fell backwards. Kaya stood there and coughed something warm and wet into her hand. She looked at it and saw it was blood. She picked up her bag and looked at the entrance to the school to see Keiko, Botan, Yukina, and Anna Maria looking at her in awe. She ignored them and walked into the school like nothing happened.

(With the Gang)
Koenma sat in his chair doing his paperwork when Yusuke burst in to the room. Koenma looked up from his papers annoyed. “I can't find Keiko anywhere! Where did you send her the last time I talked to her she said she was coming to see you! Now where is she?!?!” Yusuke shouted as Kubwara came in shouting about Yukina followed by an annoyed Kurama and Hiei. “I have sent them on a mission. You will be joining them tomorrow morning in Russia.” Koenma said with gritted teeth. “MISSION?!?! They're not spirit detectives! They can't go on a mission!” shouted Yusuke. “They agreed and I can't have you lose in Russia. We have enough problems there. Someone has to keep you in line.” Koenma said biting his pacifier. “Wait, Russia? What's in Russia?” said Kurama. “An old friend reborn. Hiei, do you remember Faith Kurani? The little girl in the thief clan that found you.” Koenma asked watching as Hiei's eyes went wide. “I'll take that as a yes. She died at 18 by an assassin because she decided to try to look for… to look for you.” He said shocked looking at the paper in shock. Hiei looked at the ground. *She died looking for me? I never should have left…* he thought. “Hiei, who was she?” Kurama asked waving his hand in front of his face to get his attention. “She was the only person in the clan who acknowledged my existence as an individual being. She was a year younger than me but she had more skill and precision than I do now. She was the best fighter I've ever met. She could have made Togruo look like Kubwara at his worst. She was deadly and…” Hiei said getting lost in thought. “And what?” everyone asked. “And beautiful. That's what made her perfect.” Hiei continued in a daze. Everyone looked at Hiei in shock. “So… You were in love with her?” Kurama asked. “What? No, love is for the weak. She was entertaining that's all.” Hiei said looking away. “Right…” Koenma said with suspicion in his voice. “I need to make sure that it's her so, I'll show you the old picture and you tell me if it's her.” Koenma said. Hiei nodded. Koenma typed on the computer and the picture of a girl with long white hair and her eyes closed who looked about the age of 12 sitting next to a child Hiei and they were laughing. “That's her.” He said looking at the picture apathetically. “That's good to know.” Koenma said typing on the computer again and bringing up a picture of Kaya. “This is her now. Let's see… Her name is Kaya Tao, age 17. She lives in Moscow, Russia. She goes to Sputnik High School. It was founded by the owners of the Russian space program. She is studying to be a psychologist. Her parents died in a car crash in 2000. Her brother killed himself in 2003. Everyone else in her family died of illnesses. Phenomena, Cancer, Brain clots, Blood clots, Bleeding to death, and suicide. Here's a nice bit of information. She has chronic asthma. Yet, she does track, tennis, swim team, gymnastics, soccer, volleyball, basket ball, and she's on the debate team. Oh, here's a surprise, She is passing all of her classes with a 4.0. Hmmm….” Koenma said. “Wow…” said Kurama. “I know all of that and she still passes everything with A's.” said Koenma looking at the screen. “No, Koenma, look at her.” Kurama said staring at the screen. “Huh?” Koenma said turning to look at the television screen behind him, his mouth fell open, and said “She's gorgeous…” Hiei looked at the screen and thought *Looks like you grew up ok.* Hiei looked at Yusuke and Kubwara who were drooling, then at Kurama who was staring glassy eyed at the screen. “As you were saying Koenma.” Hiei said annoyed. “Huh? Oh yeah, um… You will be living in her mansion with her until she trusts you. Which might take a while… All the pain she had in the mekai is still with her she doesn't know it though…” Koenma said when Botan came rushing through the door. “She got beaten up at school today!” She shouted. Keiko and Yukina walked in and ran to their boy friends giving them hugs. “WHAT! WHY?!” Koenma shouted. “I don't know… but she told us that if we showed up with her at school we would get our faces beaten in. So, we listened to her and found another student and walked to school with her. When we got there she was in a fight with three football players! They were fighting dirty too. It was three on one. One player held her down and the others punched her. Then she kicked the two punching her in their faces, she broke their noses by the way, then she kicked her leg straight up and hit the one holding her in his eye! It was an amazing fight! Hey… didn't Kurone fight like that once Kurama?” “Yeah… He did… Wait. Did Faith have blue eyes and a birth mark behind her right arm, Hiei?” Kurama asked Hiei. “Yes.” Hiei said narrowing his eyes and wondering how he knew that. “Um… Uh… Wow… this is awkward… Heh heh heh…” Kurama said looking extremely uncomfortable. “Um… Hiei… Please don't kill me… Umm… Yoko and Faith… They… Um… They … They had an intimate relationship…” Hiei glared at him and resisted the urge to slice him into pieces. Before Hiei could kill Kurama, Koenma jumped in and said, “You all should go pack and get ready for your trip tomorrow. Botan, Keiko, and Yukina you should get back to her house before she gets back to the house.” “No. She won't be back until 6:00 because she has practice today. They rearranged the entire system for her. Today she has Swimming, Track, and Gymnastics. Tomorrow she has Tennis, Soccer, and Volleyball. Then the next day she has Basketball and the debate tem the next day. So we have plenty of free time.” Said Botan. “Still.” Said Koenma watching the boys file out. “Alright…” muttered Botan who opened a portal and her and the other two walked through. Then everything was quiet. *This is going to be an interesting mission…* Koenma thought to himself as he got back to his paperwork.

That was the end of chapter 1 of Shadows of a Soul. I don't know if I want to continue this so if one person takes time to review and tell me what they thought. I will.
